Abstract:Bioinspired smart materials with synergistic allochroic luminescence and complex deformation are expected to play an important role in many areas of science and technology. However, it is still challenging to fabricate such soft actuators with high programmability, which can be manipulated in-situ with high spatial resolution. Herein, we have incorporated terminally functionalized aggregation-induced emission active tetraphenylethene derivative and photochromic spiropyran moieties into the networks of liquid crystal elastomers through covalent bonding to obtain the synergistic photochromic luminescence and programmable soft actuators. Bio-mimic functions and auxetic metamaterial-like devices were demonstrated feasible based on the combination of assembly and origami-programming strategy. These bioinspired devices with synergistic photochromic luminescence and complex photodeformation abilities could provide an elegant strategy for designing multi-functional liquid crystal actuators that could find potential applications in biomimetic soft robotics, camouflage devices, metamaterials, and beyond.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are actuatable under an electric field, whose large strain and fast response speed compare favorably with natural muscles. However, the actuation of DE-based devices is generally limited to a single mode and cannot be reconfigured after fabrication, which pales in comparison to biological counterparts given the ability to alter actuation modes according to external conditions. To address this, liquid crystal dielectric elastomers (LC-DEs) that can alter the dielectric actuation modes based on the thermally triggered shape-changing are prepared. Specifically, the two shapes through the LC phase transition possess different bending stiffness, which leads to distinct actuation modes after an electric field is applied. Moreover, the two shapes can be individually programmed/reprogrammed, that is, the one before the transition is regulated through force-directed solvent evaporation and the one after the transition is via bond exchange-enabled stress relaxation. As such, the multimodal dielectric actuation behaviors upon temperature change can be readily diversified. Meanwhile, the space charge mechanism endows LC-DEs with the significantly reduced driving e-field (8 V mu m-1) and bidirectional actuation manners. It is believed this unique adaptivity in the actuation modes under a low electric field shall offer versatile designs for practical soft robots. Multiple electric actuation modes can be achieved in a single liquid crystal dielectric elastomer based on its reversible shape changing between the permanent and temporary shape. The independent programmability of these two shapes offers high freedom to fabricate multimodal dielectric actuators with designable actions, which can be triggered at a low electric field due to the space charge mechanism.image

Abstract:An electrochemical actuator based on MXene/WO3 bilayer film with integrated color change and deformation is proposed. The synchronous ion intercalation/de‐intercalation behavior enables the film with reversible deformation and electrochromic phenomenon, while Fabry−Pérot microcavity architecture generates vivid colors. Inspired by stimuli‐responsive creatures in nature, developing devices with synergistic color change and deformation will be of great value for realizing the adaptive variants. Yet, integrating adaptive color variation and deformation into a single device remains elusive. Herein, an intriguing electrochromic actuator based on MXene/WO3 bilayer film is developed with Fabry−Pérot (F–P) microcavity, which successfully integrates both functions of reversible deformation and vivid color variations into the same device. Upon applying a small electric field, the ion intercalation/de‐intercalation can synchronously alter the stress distribution and optical absorption of MXene/WO3, resulting in the dual response of electrochromic phenomenon and ultra‐fast deformation with a maximum angle of 95° within 10 s. Moreover, the F–P microcavity architecture with the physical light interaction additionally endows the bilayer film with a bright color gamut and high color tunability (yellow–green, purple, pink, blue, etc.). Furthermore, an asymmetric soft actuator based on MXene/WO3 bilayer film is assembled, which displays robust grasping ability and excellent cycling stability up to 1000 cycles. These findings may open new opportunities for somatosensory soft robots and next‐generation intelligent robots.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fibers possess large deformation and reversibility, making them an ideal candidate for soft actuators. It's still challenging to develop a scalable strategy and endow fiber actuator with photoelectric functions to achieve tailorable photo-electro-thermal responsiveness and rapid large actuation deformation. Herein, we fabricate a multiresponsive actuator that consists of LCE long fibers obtained by continuous dry spinning and further coated with polydopamine (PDA)-modified MXene ink. The designed PDA@MXene-integrated LCE fiber is used for shape-deformable and multi-trigger actuators that can be photo- and electro-thermally actuated. The proposed LCE fiber actuator combines excellent photothermal and long-term electrically conductive PDA@MXene and shape-morphing LCE fiber, enabling their robust mechanical flexibility, multiple fast responses (~0.4 s), and stable and large actuation deformation (~60%). As a proof-of-concept, we present near-infrared light-driven artificial muscle that can lift 1000 times the weight and an intelligent circuit switch with stable controllability and fast responsiveness (~0.1 s). Importantly, an adaptive smart window system that integrates light-driven energy harvesting/conversion functions is ingeniously constructed by the integration of a propellable curtain woven by the designed fiber and solar cells. This work can provide insights into the development of advanced intelligent materials toward soft robotics, sustainable energy savings and beyond.

Abstract:The ability to achieve simultaneous intrinsic deformation with fast response in commercially available materials that can safely contact skin continues to be an unresolved challenge for artificial actuating materials. Rather than using a microporous structure, here we show an ambient-driven actuator that takes advantage of inherent nanoscale molecular channels within a commercial perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer (PFSA) film, fabricated by simple solution processing to realize a rapid response, self-adaptive, and exceptionally stable actuation. Selective patterning of PFSA films on an inert soft substrate (polyethylene terephthalate film) facilitates the formation of a range of different geometries, including a 2D (two-dimensional) roll or 3D (three-dimensional) helical structure in response to vapor stimuli. Chemical modification of the surface allowed the development of a kirigami-inspired single-layer actuator for personal humidity and heat management through macroscale geometric design features, to afford a bilayer stimuli-responsive actuator with multicolor switching capability.
Transparency-Switchable Actuator Based on Aligned Carbon Nanotube and Paraffin-Polydimethylsiloxane Composite

Abstract:High-performance actuators have been studied for many years, as they can be used in the fields of artificial muscles, optical switches and biomimetic applications. However, previous actuators mostly had single colors. Actuators with switchable optical properties are still rare. Here, we propose a transparency-switchable actuator based on single -layer superaligned carbon nanotube sheet and paraffin-polydimethylsiloxane composite. When a voltage is applied, the transmittance of the actuator changes from 0.7% to 67% (at the wavelength of 550 nm). At the same time, it bends obviously with a displacement up to 8.4 mm. The actuator is also durable, demonstrating both reversible actuation phenomenon and repeatable switchable transparency for 100 cycles. In addition, since this new type of actuator demonstrates optical property changing together with actuation process, which is smarter compared to previous conventional actuators, a smart window is fabricated, indicating its application in personal privacy protection and intelligent household devices. Abstract:Liquid crystalline network (LCN)‐based actuators grafted with Donor–Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts (DASAs) are fabricated. The LCN‐DASAs films present synergistic effects and interactions of photochemical and photothermal effects under visible light. Furthermore, multiple applications of films including information encryptions, off‐equilibrium motions grippers, and reconfigurable deformations are achieved. Liquid crystalline network (LCN)–based soft actuators have opened up great opportunities to fabricate emerging and intriguing smart materials, serving as potential building blocks for intelligent soft robotics. Endowing LCN actuators with complex responsive behaviors to enhance their intelligence is both challenging and highly demanded. Herein, Donor–Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts (DASAs) molecules with rod‐like mesogen and the polymerizable group are judiciously designed and synthesized, which is strong‐colored at linear form and de‐coloration at cyclic form after visible light. In the colored state, the DASA presents a striking photothermal effect that is capable of driving the motions of LCN film. Upon visible light irradiation, the DASA becomes colorless, making the diminishing photothermal effect. The light‐gated switching of the photothermal effect renders the LCN films to be reconfigurable and perform off‐equilibrium motions. The varying glass transition temperature of LCN matrix endowing tunable isomerization rates of DASAs and the equilibrium balance of photo‐ and thermal‐isomerization at different temperatures in LCN‐P‐DASA film mainly guiding the off‐equilibrium or stable motions, providing high adjustability of the novel visible light‐driven LCN actuators. The multiply modulated LCN‐P‐DASA film holds great potential in constructing complex visible light‐driven soft actuators based on the synergetic effect and interactions of photochemical and photothermal effects.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are excellent polymer materials for a wide range of applications, including soft actuators and shape memory materials. At present, some dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) have been introduced into LCEs to achieve reprogrammability. However, the contradiction between reprogrammability and stable actuation performance is still a challenge. One of the solutions is to introduce photoactivated DCBs into thermotropic LCEs to maintain their thermal adaptability. Therefore, it is meaningful to find a DCB with thermal stability and mild photoresponse for application in thermotropic LCEs. Herein, we adopt dynamic chemistry of allyl selenide, which not only achieves the separation of network reconfiguration conditions (light) from LC phase transition conditions (heat) but also achieves multiple network reconfiguration of LCEs under visible light conditions (405–450 nm). This dynamic covalent chemistry with mild stimulation conditions and sustainable dynamic exchange capability offers great possibilities for the application and design of covalently adaptable LCEs.

Abstract:The combination of complex perception, defense, and camouflage mechanisms is a pivotal instinctive ability that equips organisms with survival advantages. The simulations of such fascinating multi-stimuli responsiveness, including thigmotropism, bioluminescence, color-changing ability, and so on, are of great significance for scientists to develop novel biomimetic smart materials. However, most biomimetic color-changing or luminescence materials can only realize a single stimulus-response, hence the design and fabrication of multi-stimuli responsive materials with synergistic color-changing are still on the way. Here, a bioinspired multi-stimuli responsive actuator with color- and morphing-change abilities is developed by taking advantage of the assembled cellulose nanocrystals-based cholesteric liquid crystal structure and its water/temperature response behaviors. The actuator exhibits superfast, reversible bi-directional humidity and near-infrared (NIR) light actuating ability (humidity: 9 s; NIR light: 16 s), accompanying with synergistic iridescent appearance which provides a visual cue for the movement of actuators. This work paves the way for biomimetic multi-stimuli responsive materials and will have a wide range of applications such as optical anti-counterfeiting devices, information storage materials, and smart soft robots.

Abstract:The development of covalent adaptable liquid crystal networks (LCNs) enabled by introducing dynamic covalent bonds has endowed liquid crystal actuators with self-healing properties and reversible shape programmability, broadening their applications in diverse soft robotic devices. However, the finite molecular design strategy limits the recyclability and the architectural diversity of these materials. Here, a strategy is first reported for fabricating photoresponsive polydisulfide-based covalent adaptable LCNs by ring-opening polymerization of cyclic dithiolane groups. Based on the disulfide metathesis, the resulting materials are self-healable, reshapable, and reprogrammable. Importantly, the equilibrium between the polymer backbones and the dithiolane-functionalized monomers enables catalytic depolymerization to recycle monomers, which could significantly weaken the disadvantage of subtractive manufacturing of photomechanical devices. Ultralarge Contraction Directed by Light-Driven Unlocking of Prestored Strain Energy in Linear Liquid Crystal Polymer Fibers

Abstract:Anisotropic 1D contraction motion of polymeric actuating materials has drawn growing interests in fields ranging from soft robotics to biomimetic muscles. Although light-driven liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) represent promising candidates to realize contraction (<20%) triggered remotely and spatially, there remain multitudes of challenges to develop an LCP system possessing ultralarge contraction rate. Here, a novel strategy combining shape memory effect and photochemical phase transition is presented to realize light-driven contraction as large as 81% in a newly designed linear liquid crystal copolymer, where the eutectic mesogens of azobenzene and phenyl benzoate self-organize into the smectic B phase. Importantly, this highly ordered structure as the switching segment firmly locks the stress-induced strain energy, which is rapidly released by reversibletrans-cisphotoisomerization that destroys the lamellar liquid crystal phase, therefore leading to such ultralarge contraction. Fibers serve as light-driven building blocks to achieve precise origami, to mimic the recovery of a "broken" spider web and to screen objects in different sizes, laying new ground for advanced applications of light-driven LCPs from biomimetic robots to human assists.

Abstract:Assembling various nanowires together, enabling the assemblies with tailored optical, electrical, and multifunctional properties, represents a promising technology for next generation multifunctional electronics. Here we demonstrate a novel multicolor electrochromic device by coassembling W18O49 and V2O5 nanowires using solution-based Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The transparent W18O49 nanowire film became orange with the increasing addition of V2O5 nanowires and the film underwent a dynamic color change (orange, green, and gray) on application of different electrochemical biases of 2, 0, and -0.5 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Both the transmittance and color of the device can be easily controlled by manipulating the layers of coassembled nanowires and the ratios between the two nanowires. On the basis of this approach, different patterns can be easily fabricated with the addition of corresponding masks, and the solid electrochromic device is assembled, suggesting its significant potentials in smart windows and multicolor electrochromic displays.

Abstract:Multi-stimuli-responsive devices have attracted much attention in the field of smart windows due to their rich color-adjustable effect and high energy efficiency. However, most multi-stimuli-responsive color-adjustable devices have insufficient stability and complex preparation processes, which impede their industrialization. In this work, thermo- and electro-dual-responsive devices were fabricated by preparing thermochromic ion gel electrolytes and combining them with electrochromic films. Locating thermochromic and electrochromic materials in different functional layers reduces their mutual influence and prevents a decline in their single performances. The thermochromic ion gel electrolytes with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phenomenon were obtained from a simple UV-curing method with polyurethane acrylate oligomers and ionic liquids. Compared with traditional LCST hydrogels, the ion gels undergo phase transitions without a volume change, exhibit better thermal and ambient stability, and possess a wide electrochemical window. They can be widely used as electrolytes for various electrochromic materials, resulting in color-changing performance and cycling stability comparable to those of organic solution and ionic liquid electrolytes. The ion gels' LCST effect and the electrochromic layers' color-changing characteristics endow the devices with a dual-responsive feature and improved optical modulation ability. This gives the devices great application potential in smart windows and indoor decorations.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) blended with photothermal nanofillers can reversibly and rapidly deform their shapes under external optical stimuli. However, nanointerfacial slipping inevitably occurs between the LCE molecules and the nanofillers due to their weak physical interactions, eventually resulting in cyclic instability. This work presents a versatile strategy to fabricate nanointerfacial-slipping-restricted photoactuation elastomers by chemically bonding the nanofillers into a thermally actuatable liquid crystal network. We experimentally and theoretically investigated three types of metal-based nanofillers, including zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles, one-dimensional (1D) nanowires, and two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. The toughly crosslinked nanointerface allows for remarkably promoted interfacial thermal conductivity and stress transfer. Therefore, the resultant actuators enable the realization of long-term-cyclic-stability 4D-printed flexible intelligent systems such as the optical gripper, crawling robot, light-powered self-sustained windmill, butterflies with fluttering wings, and intelligent solar energy collection system.

Rapid Near‐Infrared Light Responsive Shape Memory Polymer Hybrids and Novel Chiral Actuators Based on Photothermal W18O49 Nanowires

Abstract:Photoresponsive actuators are built by introducing oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-modified W18O49 nanowires into cross-linked polyethylene glycol diacrylate (cPEGDA) polymer matrices. Due to the good compatibility, OEG-W18O49 NWs disperse well and increase the crystallinity of cPEGDA matrices even in high loading concentrations (4.0 wt%). The cPEGDA/W18O49 nanocomposites show efficient photothermal transition and rapid shape memory behaviors. They can raise the local temperature to 160 degrees C in only 8.5 s and recover the initial shape within 10 s. Making use of the broad and strong absorption property of W18O49, the cPEGDA/W18O49 NW actuators respond to both ultraviolet and near-infrared light and make contraction and bending motions. Furthermore, by utilizing oriented chain segments of the crystalline polymer and vector sum of shape recovery forces, the cPEGDA/W18O49 NW hybrid actuators exhibit stable helical deformation (right-handed and left-handed).

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a class of stimuli‐responsive materials that have been intensively studied for applications including artificial muscles, shape morphing structures, and soft robotics, due to their capability of large, programmable, and fully reversible actuation strains. To fully take advantage of LCEs, rapid, untethered, and programmable actuation methods are highly desirable. Here, we report a liquid crystal elastomer‐liquid metal (LCE‐LM) composite, which enables ultrafast and programmable actuations by eddy current induction heating. The composite consists of LM sandwiched between two LCE layers printed via direct ink writing (DIW). When subjected to a high‐frequency alternating magnetic field, the composite is actuated in milliseconds. By moving the magnetic field, the eddy current is spatially controlled for selective actuation. Additionally, sequential actuation is achievable by programming the LM thickness distribution in a sample. With these capabilities, the LCE‐LM composite is further exploited for multimodal deformation of a pop‐up structure, on‐ground omnidirectional robotic motion, and in‐water targeted object manipulation and crawling. Electroactive Bi‐Functional Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators

Abstract:Abstract Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) with promising applications in the field of actuators and soft robotics are reported. However, most of them are activated by external heating or light illumination. The examples of electroactive LCEs are still limited; moreover, they are monofunctional with one type of deformation (bending or contraction). Here, the study reports on trilayer electroactive LCE (eLCE) by intimate combination of LCE and ionic electroactive polymer device (i‐EAD). This eLCE is bi‐functional and can perform either bending or contractile deformations by the control of the low‐voltage stimulation. By applying a voltage of ±2 V at 0.1 Hz, the redox behavior and associated ionic motion provide a bending strain difference of 0.80%. Besides, by applying a voltage of ±6 V at 10 Hz, the ionic current‐induced Joule heating triggers the muscle‐like linear contraction with 20% strain for eLCE without load. With load, eLCE can lift a weight of 270 times of eLCE‐actuator weight, while keeping 20% strain and affording 5.38 kJ·m −3 work capacity. This approach of combining two smart polymer technologies (LCE and i‐EAD) in a single device is promising for the development of smart materials with multiple degrees of freedom in soft robotics, electronic devices, and sensors.

Abstract:Electrothermal liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fibers have attracted much attention with the development of soft robots and smart fabrics. However, for currently reported electrothermal LCEs, their driven circuits are fixed and not rewritable, limiting their potential of adapting to various applications. In this study, we propose an electrothermal actuation method based on microfluids for LCE fibers. In this method, two types of liquid metals (LMs), namely, Hg and Ga, are injected into an LCE hollow fiber to form a driven circuit. The distribution of LMs is programmed using a microfluidic pump by controlling the injection. Owing to the different electrothermal effects of the two LMs, the fiber section comprising Hg with a higher resistivity can be designed to contract more than Ga with a lower resistivity. Therefore, a specific driven circuit inside the fiber results in a corresponding deformation mode upon electricity. Owing to the fluidity of LMs, the driven circuit can be easily re-expressed by injecting fresh LMs, enabling a single LCE fiber to realize diverse deformation modes. The proposed method can enhance the functionality of LCE and pave the way for the development of other electrothermal-actuated materials and actuators.
