Abstract:The contemporary microfabrication technique enables us to fabricate microheater tiny enough to control temperature so quickly and precisely in micro length scale. The devices exhibiting the Marangoni effect in square channels were designed and fabricated from one silicon substrate and two quartz substrates. And the three substrates were aligned, bonded and packaged for testing. In this actuator there is a pair of micro-heaters to produce a thermal gradient along the slit. The driving wattage is about 0.1W and the resistors can make a temperature difference about 100 degrees during 0.1s with a pulsewidth of 20us for 0.1A current pulses. Then the movement is driven towards the lower temperature direction by the interfacial tension of the air-liquid interface. This micro fluid actuator can play an important role in many liquid micro-systems such as in micromotor and micro valve.

Abstract:When implemented on the nanoscale, material flows driven by gradients in temperature, sometimes known as thermocapillary flows, can be exploited for various purposes, including nanopatterning, device fabrication, and purification of arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Systematic experimental and theoretical studies on thermocapillary flow in thin polymer films driven by heating in individual metallic SWNT over a range of conditions and molecular weights reveal the underlying physics of this process. The findings suggest that the zero-shear viscosity is a critical parameter that dominates the dependence on substrate temperature and heating power. The experimentally validated analytical models in this study allow assessment of sensitivity to other parameters, such as the temperature coefficient of surface tension, the thermal interface conductance, and the characteristic length scale of the heated zone.
Simulation Of Single Bubble Evaporation In A Microchannel In Zero Gravity With Thermocapillary Effect

Abstract:This paper presents fundamental research on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer surrounding a single elongated bubble during flow boiling in a circular microchannel. A continuum surface force (CSF) model based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method is combined with the thermocapillary force to explore the effects of thermocapillarity for flow boiling in microchannels. To validate the self-defined codes, a two-phase thermocapillary-driven flow and a Taylor bubble growing in a capillary tube are studied. Results of both test cases show good convergence and agreement with data from the earlier literature. The bubble motion and the local heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the heated wall with respect to time are discussed. It is found that for large Marangoni number (case 3), variation of surface tension has affected the bubble shape and temperature profile. The thermocapillary effect induces convection in a thin liquid film region, which augments the HTCs at specified positions. The numerical investigation also shows that the average HTC increased by 6.7% in case 3 when compared with case 1. Thus, it is very important to study further the effects of themocapillarity and the Marangoni effect on bubble growth in microchannels.

Abstract:Surface tension gradients induce Marangoni flow, which may be exploited for fluid transport. At the micrometer scale, these surface-driven flows can be more significant than those driven by pressure. By introducing fluid-fluid interfaces on the walls of microfluidic channels, we use surface tension gradients to drive bulk fluid flows. The gradients are specifically induced through thermal energy, exploiting the temperature dependence of a fluid-fluid interface to generate thermocapillary flow. In this report, we provide the design concept for a biocompatible, thermocapillary microchannel capable of being powered by solar irradiation. Using temperature gradients on the order of degrees Celsius per centimeter, we achieve fluid velocities on the order of millimeters per second. Following experimental observations, fluid dynamic models, and numerical simulation, we find that the fluid velocity is linearly proportional to the provided temperature gradient, enabling full control of the fluid flow within the microchannels.

Abstract:The evaporation from a micropillar evaporator is a problem governed by various interfacial phenomena such as the capillarity-induced liquid flow, thin-film evaporation intensifying near the contact lines, and thermocapillarity-induced Marangoni flow. However, past research has not been able to assess the effect of Marangoni flow due to the missing coupling between cell- and device-level modeling. In this work, we develop a comprehensive model for the evaporation from a micropillar evaporator by coupling the liquid flow with the energy transfer in both liquid and solid domains at both cell- and device-levels. The model is successfully validated with previous experiments. When the Marangoni number is sufficiently high, the model identifies a sharp reduction in the evaporator temperature attributed to the thermocapillary convection creating circulations beneath the liquid-vapor interface, which results in the formation of periodic reverse surface flows on the interface. This temperature drop cannot be identified when thermocapillarity is switched off in the model and the model's prediction substantially deviates from experimental measurement. Therefore, the current study reveals a hitherto unexplored role of Marangoni flow in the evaporation of water from micropillar evaporators.

Abstract:A noncontact bubble manipulation by an optically induced local surface tension gradient is described in this paper. In microfluidic devices, the effects of interfacial phenomena become dominant with decreasing of the length scale. An appropriate control of the local gradient of the interfacial properties can provide a powerful method for bubble handling in the microfluidic system. Here, the photothermal technique is used to induce the gradient in surface tension around a microbubble. The thermocapillary force around the bubble is induced and controlled by local laser focusing. The bubble in a microchannel filled with silicone oil with varied viscosity was examined to verify experimentally the optical manipulation method of bubbles based on the photothermal Marangoni effect. As a result, three applications of bubble manipulation by using photothermal Marangoni effect are obtained: detachment from channel wall, trapping in liquid phase, and transportation in the channel. Additionally, minimum optical power for the manipulation was evaluated. The effects of bubble size, liquid viscosity, and irradiated optical power on the manipulation characteristics can be summarized by a dimensionless number that is a ratio of the thermocapillary force to viscous drag force for the bubble.

Abstract:A liquid in Cassie-Baxter state above a structured superhydrophobic surface is ideally suited for surface driven transport due to its large free surface fraction in close contact to a solid. We investigate thermal Marangoni flow over a superhydrophobic array of fins oriented parallel or perpendicular to an applied temperature gradient. In the Stokes limit we derive an analytical expression for the bulk flow velocity above the surface and compare it with numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation. Even for moderate temperature gradients comparatively large flow velocities are induced, suggesting to utilize this principle for microfluidic pumping.

Abstract:Capillary flow of liquids plays a key role in many applications including lab-on-a-chip devices, heat pipes and printed electronics manufacturing. Open rectangular microchannels often appear in these applications, with the lack of a top resulting in a complex free-surface morphology and evaporation. In this work we develop a theoretical model based on lubrication theory and kinetically limited evaporation to examine capillary flow of evaporating liquid solutions in open rectangular microchannels connected to circular reservoirs. The model accounts for the complex free-surface morphology, solvent evaporation, Marangoni flows due to gradients in solute concentration and temperature and finite-size reservoir effects. Significant differences are predicted in flow behaviour between pure liquids and liquid solutions due to solvent evaporation and solute transport. Marangoni flows are found to promote more uniform solute deposition patterns after solvent evaporation. Model predictions of meniscus position evolution are in good agreement with prior capillary-flow experiments of aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions in the presence of evaporation. The model reveals that the principal mechanism through which evaporation influences the meniscus position in the experiments is the increase in viscosity with solute concentration.

Abstract:The present work discusses the characteristics of the thermal effects at microscale. The thermal effects are divided into two types, steady and unsteady. The unsteady thermal effect focuses on the thermal response of object during heating. It relies on the object thermal inertia. Thermal response phenomena have seldom application of practical uses in devises at conventional scale. However, the miniaturization in device size due to the development of the state-of-the-art technology makes it possible to utilize thermal responses due to its significantly reduced thermal inertia. The swift thermal response can be utilized in the designs of micro dual-layered metal membrane pumps, phase change pumps, polymerase chain reaction (PRC). For steady type the thermal effect in microchennels varies with the boundary conditions and flow parameters. The relative importance of different forces changes with the scale going down. The viscous dissipation and the work due to expansion may not be neglected for the convection inside a microchannel; the conduction in the wall has to be considered in the calculation of the Nusselt number for microchannel. The. relative importance of different heat transfer mode also varies with size. The natural convection presides over the heat transport inside a microchamber and the heat through an air gap by thermal radiation may exceed that by conduction at nanoscale. All the above mentioned variations make the heat transfer at microscale different from that at conventional scale.
Fundamental Studies on Micro-Droplet Movement by Marangoni and Capillary Effects

Abstract:This work is a fundamental study on the movement of various sized micro-liter droplets on a surface subjected to temperature gradients. The histories of droplet movement are recorded by high-speed CCD camera and are simulated by numerical methods based on first principle equations. The agreement between computations and experimental observations are obtained. The study indicates that temperature gradients, the change of dynamic receding/advancing contact angles across the droplets, and the flowfields inside the droplet are the key parameters determining the moving behavior of the micro-droplet driven by Marangoni and capillary effects.

Abstract:We test the validity of Hamilton-equation methods for determining the time evolution of trial state vectors in quantum mechanics. Given a trial state vector, we are able to construct a differential operator under which a scalar Hamilton function must be invariant. State vectors composed of single-particle states, coherent-state products, and mixed single-particle states and coherent-state products are considered explicitly. In the latter category, we consider state vectors of the form proposed by Davydov in his treatment of the quantum soliton problem. We find that Davydov's wave vector, as determined by the Hamilton-equation method, is not a solution of the Schr\"odinger equation for the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian except under very restrictive circumstances. The theoretical justification for a number of conclusions about soliton transport in Fr\"ohlich-type systems is thus called into question.

Abstract:<p>Motived by recent ground-based and microgravity experiments investigating the interfacial dynamics of a volatile liquid (FC-72, <span class="math"><math>Pr=12.34</math></span>) contained in a heated cylindrical cell, we numerically study the thermocapillary-driven flow in such an evaporating liquid layer. Particular attention is given to the prediction of the transition of the axisymmetric flow to fully three-dimensional patterns when the applied temperature increases. The numerical simulations rely on an improved one-sided model of evaporation by including heat and mass transfer through the gas phase via the heat transfer Biot number and the evaporative Biot number. We present the axisymmetric flow characteristics, show the variation of the transition points with these Biot numbers, and more importantly elucidate the twofold role of the latent heat of evaporation in the stability; evaporation not only destabilizes the flow but also stabilizes it, depending upon the place where the evaporation-induced thermal gradients come into play. We also show that buoyancy in the liquid layer has a stabilizing effect, though its effect is insignificant. At high Marangoni numbers, the numerical simulations revealed smaller-scale thermal patterns formed on the surface of a thinner evaporating layer, in qualitative agreement with experimental observations. The present work helps to gain a better understanding of the role of a phase change in the thermocapillary instability of an evaporating liquid layer.</p>

Abstract:Gas-liquid and liquid-liquid two-phase flow are widely used in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering and other fields such as separation, reaction, and mass transfer in microfluidic systems. Studying the formation methods of droplets and bubbles in microfluidics is of great significance to the application of microchemical technology. In this review, according to the methods of droplets and bubbles formation, the research progress and development trend of droplets and bubbles formation in microfluidics in recent years are reviewed. Formation methods are divided into passive methods and active methods according to whether external energy is required. Passive methods include T-junction, flow-focusing, co-flowing and step emulsification. Active methods include surface acoustic waves, DC/AC electric fields, magnetic fields, and thermal fields. Finally, this review points out the future direction of research on liquid droplets and bubbles. This review sheds new light on monodisperses, highly controllable droplets and bubbles formation and its applications.

Abstract:This paper discusses the studies on the internal flow field of droplets traveling in a rectangular microchannel by means of microparticle image velocimetry, specifically concentrating on the effects of capillary number, viscosity ratio and interfacial tension. The flow topology is predominantly dependent on the capillary number. It shows that the evident transitions from three pairs of recirculation zones at lower capillary numbers to one pair of recirculation zones near the sidewalls with low velocity in the central area at intermediate capillary numbers, then to a pair of recirculation zones closest to the axial centerline with high velocity in the central area at higher capillary numbers. There are two critical capillary numbers increasing with viscosity ratio in the evolution of flow features. Droplet size only influences two velocity components values other than the flow topology within intervals separated by the critical values. The equilibrium mechanism of viscous friction force and Marangoni stress dominate the internal topological transition in a surfactant added system. The obtained internal fluid phenomena inside droplets are beneficial to provide a guideline for screening of biochemical reaction conditions in the device.

SOME FLOW AND THERMAL PHENOMENA AT MICROSCALE

Abstract:The physical mechanisms for the size effects on the flow and heat transfer have been divided into two classifications: (a) variations of the predominant factors influence the relative importance of various phenomena in the flow and heat transfer as the characteristic length decrease, even if the continuum assumption is still valid; (b) the continuum assumption breaks down as the characteristic length of the flow becomes comparable to the mean free path of the molecules. The departure of most flow and thermal phenomena in the MEMS from conventional ones is due to the variation of predominant factors in the flow and heat transfer problems, rather than that Navier-Stokes equation and Fourier heat conduction equation etc are no longer valid. Due to the larger surface to volume ratio for microchannels and microdevices, factors related to surface effects have more impact to microscale flow and heat transfer. For example, surface friction induced flow compressibility makes the fluid velocity profiles flatter and leads to higher friction factors and Nusselt numbers; surface roughness is likely responsible for the increased friction factor; the early transition from laminar to turbulent flow and Nusselt number; and other effects, such as the axial heat conduction in the channel wall, the channel surface geometry, surface electrostatic charges, and measurement errors, could lead to different flow and heat transfer behaviors from that at conventional scales. The condensation/evaporation across the liquid-vapor interface and the liquid-vapor nucleation are processes at nanometer scale. In these cases the macroscopic approach is hard to reveal the details at nanometer scales, while the molecular dynamic simulation is a powerful tool to describe such microscopic processes, and has been applied to investigate the density and temperature profiles across the liquid-vapor interface. The condensation coefficient on the liquid-vapor interface under thermodynamic equilibrium condition has been well predicted based on. the characteristic time method, which can distinguish the condensed particles from the reflected particles. Molecular dynamics simulations show that liquid-vapor nucleation undergoes three stages, namely, cavity growth, cavity coalescence and bubble formation.

Abstract:The mechanics of capillary force in biological systems have critical roles in the formation of the intra- and inter-cellular structures, which may mediate the organization, morphogenesis, and homeostasis of biomolecular condensates. Current techniques may not allow direct and precise measurements of the capillary forces at the intra- and inter-cellular scales. By preserving liquid droplets at the liquid–liquid interface, we have discovered and studied ideal models, i.e., interfacial liquids and marbles, for understanding general capillary mechanics that existed in liquid-in-liquid systems, e.g., biomolecular condensates. The unexpectedly long coalescence time of the interfacial liquids revealed that the Stokes equation does not hold as the radius of the liquid bridge approaches zero, evidencing the existence of a third inertially limited viscous regime. Moreover, liquid transport from a liquid droplet to a liquid reservoir can be prohibited by coating the droplet surface with hydrophobic or amphiphilic particles, forming interfacial liquid marbles. Unique characteristics, including high stability, transparency, gas permeability, and self-assembly, are observed for the interfacial liquid marbles. Phase transition and separation induced by the formation of nanostructured materials can be directly observed within the interfacial liquid marbles without the need for surfactants and agitation, making them useful tools to research the interfacial mechanics.

Abstract:A droplet of a classical liquid surrounded by a cold gas placed on a hot substrate is accompanied by unremitting internal circulations, while the droplet remains immobile. Two identical cells with opposite sense of circulation form in the interior due to the thermocapillary effect induced by the gas and substrate temperature difference. Under the same conditions, a droplet composed of an odd viscous liquid exerts a compressive stress on the cell rotating in one sense and tensile on the cell rotating in the opposite sense resulting in a tilted droplet configuration. A sufficiently strong thermal gradient leads the contact angles to overcome hysteresis effects and induces droplet migration.

Abstract:Liquid–vapor phase change phenomena such as boiling and condensation are processes widely implemented in industrial systems such as power plants, refrigeration and air conditioning systems, desalination plants, water processing installations and thermal management devices due to their enhanced heat transfer capability when compared to single-phase processes. The last decade has seen significant advances in the development and application of micro and nanostructured surfaces to enhance phase change heat transfer. Phase change heat transfer enhancement mechanisms on micro and nanostructures are significantly different from those on conventional surfaces. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of the effects of micro and nanostructure morphology and surface chemistry on phase change phenomena. Our review elucidates how various rational designs of micro and nanostructures can be utilized to increase heat flux and heat transfer coefficient in the case of both boiling and condensation at different environmental conditions by manipulating surface wetting and nucleation rate. We also discuss phase change heat transfer performance of liquids having higher surface tension such as water and lower surface tension liquids such as dielectric fluids, hydrocarbons and refrigerants. We discuss the effects of micro/nanostructures on boiling and condensation in both external quiescent and internal flow conditions. The review also outlines limitations of micro/nanostructures and discusses the rational development of structures to mitigate these limitations. We end the review by summarizing recent machine learning approaches for predicting heat transfer performance of micro and nanostructured surfaces in boiling and condensation applications.
