Abstract:A periodical reversion of velocity direction distinguishes an oscillating flow from a common unidirectional steady flow. This study focuses on heat transfer in oscillating flow within a circular channel. An experimental apparatus operating at a frequency of 0.3-1.1 Hz and at a near atmospheric pressure has been built for measuring the heat transfer rate. Typical experimental data on the oscillating pressure, velocity, temperature difference (between the central fluid and the channel wall), on the heat flux at the channel wall are presented. A zero-order Nusselt number is used to characterize the time-averaged heat transfer of the oscillating flow. A marked increase in the zero-order Nusselt number with increase in the Peclet number is observed, which indicates that the raised frequency can effectively enhance heat transfer in oscillating flow.

Abstract:Heat transfer is an important phenomenon that exists in many industrial applications, especially for gas turbines, aeronautical engines. In this work, two different turbulence models (k - omega and SAS model) are used to investigate the effects of inlet turbulence on wall heat transfer and the characteristics of flow field in a well-known turbine guide vane (LS89). In order to handle the transition, Menter's gamma - Re-theta t transition model is used. The simulations show that the inlet turbulence has an apparent effect on the wall heat transfer of the vane. Not only the maximum wall heat transfer coefficient is increased, the distribution of wall heat flux at the suction side is also modified. The isentropic Mach number along the vane surface is insensitive to the variance of inlet turbulence intensity. Besides, a shock appears in the throat and a laminar-to-turbulence transition position moves forward after the main flow turbulence is enhanced. Moreover, the results indicate that SAS model is capable of capturing more flow structures such as reflecting pressure waves and shedding vortexes while the k - omega model misses them due to the dissipation.

Abstract:Exploring the flow and heat transfer characteristics of oscillations will help to evaluate the dynamic behavior and safety of thermal management systems (TMS) in automobiles, ships, and aircraft. Faraday waves is a phenomenon that standing waves oscillate with half of the driving frequency under specific oscillation conditions. The current work combines both, studying the influence of oscillation parameters of Faraday waves on heat transfer since the oscillatory liquid surface and the shaking of the liquid-filled container frequently occurs in practical engineering applications. A numerical simulation on heat transfer characteristics under different vibration parameters was carried out in this study. The results demonstrate that oscillation has a promotion effect on the heat transfer coefficient. The influence of the driving frequency on heat transfer will be affected by the driving amplitude. When the driving amplitude is greater than 0.83 mm or the driving frequency is greater than 22 Hz, the waveform will change from periodic and regular to disorder and turbulence, and the heat transfer between the two-phase flow will be significantly enhanced. In the range of oscillation parameters covered in this study, increasing the driving amplitude is more effective than increasing the driving frequency for enhancing heat transfer. And when the driving amplitude is big enough, such as A = 1.03 mm, the heat transfer intensity increases to about 1.5–2 times as against A = 0.43 mm. Therefore, when considering the design of TMS, the dynamic empirical correlations proposed by this study can offer some useful guidance.

Abstract:Utilizing ultrasonic excitation as an active method for studying the rate of heat transfer has gained considerable attention recently. The present study investigated the effects of ultrasonic excitation on the heat transfer rate in a fin-and-flat tube heat exchanger experimentally. The performance of the heat exchanger was investigated with and without the presence of ultrasonic excitation. A comprehensive parameter study was attempted, so several parameters, including ambient temperature, flow rate, air passing velocity, Reynolds number, and Nusselt number, were studied in a relatively wide range. An adequate uncertainty test, as well as a validation assessment, is provided to certify the credibility of the obtained results and the hired facility. The results revealed that reducing the flow rate, ambient temperature, and air passing velocity on the heat exchanger increased the ultrasonic excitation’s effects. The highest heat transfer enhancement in the present experiment was 70.11%, measured at the lowest air passing velocity and ambient temperature with a Reynolds number 2166. The data presented in this paper will be useful for the optimal design of ultrasonic vibrating fin-and-tube heat exchangers.

Abstract:Energy is vital to the survival and development of human beings. In the era of 'carbon neutrality', all walks of life around the world are upgrading their technological capabilities to reduce carbon emissions. As a new type of active strengthening technology to improve the comprehensive performance of heat exchangers, ultrasonic technology has attracted the attention of more and more scholars. From the actual installation situation, a set of ultrasonic enhanced heat transfer test device with tube sheet round tube was built. After experimental research and data analysis, the influence of ultrasonic sound intensity, frequency, and position on heat transfer, flow resistance, and comprehensive performance of heat exchange tube under different working conditions and without ultrasonic wave is studied. The results show that the ultrasonic enhanced heat transfer and drag reduction capacity increases with the decrease of ultrasonic frequency, and under the action of ultrasonic waves of different frequencies, the critical sound intensity of its enhanced heat transfer and drag reduction performance is different. The drag reduction performance of the ultrasonic heat exchange tube is increased by 18.41%, the heat transfer performance is increased by 36.53%, and the overall performance is increased by 20.57%.

Abstract:This study experimentally investigated the effect of low-frequency ultrasonic waves on the heat transfer augmentation of turbulent water flow in a narrow rectangular duct with a width of 5 mm. 25-, 33-, and 40-kHz ultrasonic transducers were set to release waves in a downward direction to disturb the flow, with Reynolds numbers (Re) of 10,000-25,000 at increments of 2500. The results indicated that the ultrasonic waves increased the friction loss by only 0.2-2% over the entire testing Re range, while an 8.1-48.6% enhancement of the heat transfer capability was obtained for the Re range of 10,000-15,000. The maximum Nusselt number occurred at a Re of 12,500 and frequency of 33 kHz. However, beyond Re values of 12,500, the thermal performance tended to decrease with an increase in Re. Consequently, the average Nusselt number ratios at ultrasonic frequencies of 25, 33, and 40 kHz over the tested Re range were 1.123, 1.039, and 1.033, respectively, while the thermal performance values were 1.108, 0.989, and 1.036, respectively. These results confirmed that ultrasound has significant potential for application in heat transfer augmentation of turbulent pipe flow. This paper also provides formulas to predict the friction factor and Nusselt number and discusses the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement by ultrasonic waves at 25, 33, and 40 kHz.

Abstract:Recently, ultrasound was discovered to have great potential in enhancing heat transfer from thermal systems., However, there is little information of the flow resistance, induced by its waves. Therefore, this research investigates the pressure loss of turbulent water flow in a circular pipe disturbed by 25 kHz ultrasound at the Reynolds number of 10,000, 12,500, 15,000, 17,500, 20,000, 22,500, and 25,000. The size of test section was modeled in accordance with the power plant's condenser and the flow had been verified by the comparison of friction factor with theory. The maximum and minimum differences were 9.79 and 0.33%, respectively, confirming the reliability of the test setup. In this study, ultrasound was released along the mainstream flow from 3 and 15 transducers, installed upstream of the pipe. The results confirmed that the ultrasound was slightly affected on the friction loss of turbulent pipe flow. The average increase of pressure loss was 0.077% and 0.833% by the waves when they were emitted from 3 and 15 transducers, respectively. With very low inducement of flow resistance, ultrasound can be accounted as one of the most promising techniques for heat transfer enhancement, applicable to many thermal systems such as condensers, in the future.

Abstract:The heat transfer capability was investigated for water flow across a cylinder under the influence of 25 kHz ultrasound in a rectangular duct with a Reynolds number (Re) in the range of 110–2,140. A heating cylinder with constant heat flux was set at the center of the duct. The transducer was mounted on the top wall, and its location was set at -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 diameters from the cylinder in the streamwise direction. Thermocouples and thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs) were used to characterize the heat transfer mechanism on the heating surface. In particular, a visualization technique using TLCs was developed to obtain temperature results on a cylindrical surface. The temperature of the heating surface was reduced by the acoustic cavitation process with ultrasonic involvement. The local Nusselt number was increased by 2.37-fold by the waves at a cylindrical angle of 90° and Re value of 110 when the transducer was also located in the middle of the duct. Furthermore, the results indicated that ultrasonic effects could be transported along with the flow when the transducer was located upstream. In addition, when the waves were released downstream, they affected the heat transfer of the cylindrical surface at low Re values. The friction loss in the system was investigated by comparing the pressure drops with and without ultrasound. Depending on the position of the ultrasonic transducer, the pressure drop ratio was in the range 0.88–1.27. Furthermore, the areas most affected by ultrasound were identified using the TLC measurement method, and regions of augmented heat transfer were detected locally on the shaded and unshaded sides of the cylinder. A predictive formula was proposed for the local Nusselt number ratio with and without ultrasound as a function of the Re value, spanwise direction, and cylindrical angle.

Abstract:In this study, ultrasonic waves produced by a piezoelectric device were evaluated for their effects on heat transfer and Nusselt number. The study also considered different power levels for thermal heaters with three types of base plates: round pin and extruded plate pin heat sink. The experiment included convective heat transfer tests conducted in both free and forced convection modes. The free convection tests were performed without a fan, while the forced convection tests were carried out with fans of 40 and 60 rounds per minute (RPM). It was observed that ultrasonic vibrations increased heat transfer and improved the efficiency of the system, particularly under laminar flow conditions. In comparison with the no-vibration and no-fan mode (fan = 0 rpm), higher levels of ultrasonic vibration increased efficiency by 2.5 times in the 80-W (W) heater and 60-rpm fan mode.

Abstract:Ultrasound is recognized as an effective technology to enhance heat transfer, which is widely used in industrial fields such as microelectronics and heat storage. However, the heat transfer characteristics in rectangular microchannels assisted with ultrasound has little revealed in present research. In this work, the external ultrasonic was added in a rectangular microchannel to reveal the influence of ultrasound on the heat transfer characteristics of micro-channels. Hence, the comparative experiments were completed to explore the heat transfer performance with and without ultrasonic. Moreover, a large number of experiments were carried out within rectangular microchannels by varying the velocity of the working fluid and the heat flux at the bottom of the microchannels. The results indicate that the heat transfer performance of rectangular microchannels can be enhanced by ultrasound. But the enhanced heat transfer effect could be limited with the increase of the flow velocity and heat flux in microchannel correspondingly. For rectangular microchannels with adding ultrasound, the lower the flow rate and heat flow density are, the better the enhancement effect will be. During the measurement, when the fluid flow velocity is 0.2 m/s and the heat flux is 408.2 kW/m2, the heat transfer performance of the ultrasound-enhanced microchannel can be improved by a maximum of 12.9 %. Additionally, the tests indicate that the pressure drop mainly comes from the viscous loss along rectangular channel, yet the ultrasound has no negative impact on pressure drop in microchannel. This work could be beneficial to the further application of ultrasonic enhancement technology.

Abstract:This paper numerically investigated the effects of incorporating three distinct vortex-based fluidic oscillators on heat transfer and pressure drop within a two-dimensional channel with constant heat flux at different Reynolds numbers ranging from 10,000 to 50,000. These oscillators consist of primary and secondary chambers connected by a throat and a return channel. The dimensions of the base vortex-based fluidic oscillators were halved to design the second oscillator while keeping the inlet and outlet throats unchanged to reduce pressure drop across the oscillator. Finally, a protrusion was incorporated into the wall profile of the second oscillator, intensifying the vortex in the secondary chamber and augmenting the transverse oscillation amplitude to boost heat transfer. The finite volume method with the k–ω shear-stress transport (SST) turbulence model was used to solve the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations and energy transport. Transient numerical results demonstrated intensified jet oscillations in the channel, enhancing heat transfer, particularly at the inlet zones of the channel owing to vigorous collisions with upper and lower channel walls. The time-averaged numerical results indicated that the first, second, and third oscillators respectively raised the average Nusselt number of the channel by 40%, 21%, and 24% at X/D = 5. Similarly, at X/D = 10, the oscillators led to increases of 22%, 9%, and 11 %, compared to the simple channel without oscillators. The small-size second and third oscillators also increased the performance evaluation criterion (PEC) compared to the base vortex-based fluidic oscillator. The maximum PEC values were 0.95 for the base oscillator, 1 for the second oscillator, and 0.98 for the third oscillator at Re = 10,000. These oscillators can be used as inserts for enhancing heat transfer in channels.

Abstract:Ultrasound, as the considerable field energy source, has a significant effect on heat transfer enhancement. Although there has been deeply researched on the utilization of ultrasound in heat exchangers, the ambient environment conditions are usually ignored. In this paper, controlling vibratory surface by user defined function, the heat transfer enhancement induced by ultrasound is numerically studied in immersed coil heat exchangers, and effects of acoustic intensity, ambient pressure and ambient fluid flow velocity on the heat transfer enhancement are investigated. The results show the heat transfer enhancement factor η h reaches to 24.26% after ultrasonic treatment for 0.005 s. When the vibratory amplitude increases from 20 μm to 35 μm, η h raises from 15.67% to 26.71%. With an increase of the ambient pressure from 0.1 MPa to 1.0 MPa, η h changes from 24.26% to 48.43%. While the inlet flow velocity decreases from 1.0 m/s to 0.1 m/s, η h varies from 1.76% to 39.01%. This research based on immersed coil heat exchangers has evaluated the influence of acoustic intensity and ambient fluid properties on acoustic streaming and acoustic cavitation, which provides with a guidance in the utilization of ultrasound in heat exchangers.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of an applied ultrasonic field (5 and 13.5 W) with low frequency (31.5 kHz) on both heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop in a circular minichannel heat sink (MCHS). The circular MCHS heat sink with overall dimensions of 50 mm × 50 mm × 5 mm was 3D-printed via the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technique. The MCHS was made of 316 L stainless steel powder with 12 circular flow channels, each having a hydraulic diameter of 2 mm. The experiment was performed using tap water as the working fluid under a laminar flow regime (106 ≤ Re ≤ 805) with corresponding flow rates of 0.126 to 0.96 lpm. The experimental results showed a 13.5% enhancement in the average heat transfer coefficient under ultrasound for Re = 106. Based on the experimental data, the enhancement of heat transfer is a linear function of the applied ultrasonic power. Furthermore, it was observed that the effects of the ultrasonic field on heat transfer enhancement decreased under the same conditions as the Reynolds number increased. It was found that the ultrasound had only a small effect on the pressure drop. The findings of this study provide evidence that ultrasound is an effective technique for enhancing heat transfer in laminar flow in MCHS.

Experimental investigation of flow boiling heat transfer enhancement under ultrasound fields in a minichannel heat sink

Abstract:Ultrasound is considered to be an effective active heat transfer enhancement method, which is widely used in various fields. But there is no clear understanding of flow boiling heat transfer characteristics in micro/mini-channels under ultrasonic field since the studies related are limited up to now. In this paper, a novel minichannel heat exchanger with two ultrasonic transducers inside the inlet and outlet plenum respectively is designed to experimentally investigate the impacts of ultrasound on flow boiling heat transfer enhancement in a minichannel heat sink. Flow visualization analyses reveal that ultrasound can promote rapid bubble motion, bubble detachment from heating wall surface and thereby new bubble generation, and decrease the length of confined bubble. Furthermore, the flow boiling experiments are initiated employing working fluid R141b at different ultrasonic parameters (e.g., frequency, power, angle of radiation) and heat flux under three types of ultrasound excitations: no ultrasound (NU), single inlet ultrasound (IU), inlet and outlet ultrasound (IOU). The results indicate that ultrasound has obvious augmentation effects on flow boiling heat transfer even though the intensification effects will be limited with the heat flux increases. The higher ultrasonic power, the lower ultrasonic frequency and the higher ultrasonic radiation angle, the better intensification efficiency. The maximum enhancement ratio of have in the saturated boiling section reaches 1.88 at 50 W, 23 kHz and 45° under the experimental conditions. This study will be beneficial for future applications of ultrasound on flow boiling heat transfer in micro/mini-channels.
Study of ultrasonic influence on heat transfer and resistance performance of round tube with twisted belt

Abstract:Abstract In this study, ultrasonic technology is combined with twisted belts to explore the comprehensive performance, and this study also investigated the effect of different Reynolds numbers, ultrasonic frequencies, and number of transducers on the performance of circular and twisted band tubes. It was found that ultrasonic waves applied on the tube plate enhanced the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger tubes, reduced the flow resistance, and improved the overall performance, and the lower the ultrasonic frequency, the better the heat transfer and resistance reduction ability, and at the experimental condition frequency of 21 kHz, the maximum increase of Nu is 19.06%. With the increase of Reynolds number, the better the ultrasonic enhancement heat transfer performance, but the worse the resistance reduction performance. For different heat exchanger tube structures, the synergistic enhanced heat transfer effect of ultrasonic waves with the twisted belt is better than round tubes, and the synergistic drag reduction effect with the round tube is better than the twisted tape round tube. When the installed ultrasonic transducers are two, the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger tube is the best, and the maximum increase in the value of Nu was 28.06%.

Abstract:Turbulators are used in oil and gas industries, steel, power plants and air conditioning to improve energy performance. For example, to decrease gas consumption in the heater of the city gas station. So far, few studies have been done on a using of active method and compared with passive method. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of moving turbulators as an innovative subject on thermal characteristics in turbulent flow inside the tube is investigated experimentally and numerically. The numerical solution is performed using Ansys Fluent software in the range of Re = 6000–21000. Then, to deepen the obtained results, experiments were performed. For experiments, a heat exchanger is made in which water flows inside the shell and air inside the tube. Disc turbulator sectors with AR = 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5, 0.75 from rotational speeds 10–3000 rpm are inserted into the tube. The results show that the thermal efficiency increases by decreasing the angle ratio and increasing the rotation speed of the turbulator. The Nu, f , and η increase compared to smooth pipe, 3.59, 38, and 1.58, respectively. In addition, the maximum thermal efficiency of 1.51 is obtained for the turbulator with AR = 0.125 and PR = 2 at n = 600 rpm and Re = 6000. Under the same conditions, the Nusselt number for the moving turbulator increases by 118% compared to the stationary turbulator. The turbulators with a lower angle ratio are an optimum and cost-efficient selection. Also, rotating turbulators create higher thermal performance than stationary turbulators.

Abstract:Experimental and numerical investigations are performed to provide an assessment of the transport behavior of an ultrasonic oscillatory air–water two-phase flow in a microchannel. The flow exhibits highly unsteady behavior as the water and air interact with each other during the vibration cycles, making it significantly different from the well-studied steady flow in microchannels. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is realized by combing the turbulence Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes <span class="equationTd inline-formula"><math> k − ω</math></span> model with the phase-field method in the Eulerian framework to resolve the dynamics of the two-phase flow. The numerical results are qualitatively validated by the experiment. Through parametric studies achieved by CFD simulation, we specifically examined the effects of vibration conditions (i.e., frequency and amplitude), microchannel taper angle, and wall surface contact angle (i.e., wettability) on the flow rate through the microchannel. The configuration for the highest flow rate is identified, which will help optimize the efficiency of a novel ultrasonic drying device. The described CFD modeling approach may also advance the potential applications where oscillatory or general unsteady microchannel two-phase flows may be present.

Heat transfer enhancement of water flow over a heating flat plate using 20 kHz ultrasonic waves irradiated from submerged horn-type transducer

Abstract:The enhancement of heat transfer of water flow over a flat plate under 20 kHz ultrasound irradiated from a submerged horn-type transducer was investigated experimentally in a water tunnel. To examine the ultrasonic effects, the transducer emitted waves perpendicular to the mainstream direction, and the freestream velocity varied between 0.12 and 0.17 m/s. The transducer position was fixed at 0.45 m from the plate leading edge in a streamwise direction. This position was altered in a heightwise direction as dimensionless heightwise distances ( Z ) that were divided by the diameter of the horn-tip transducer (12 mm) at 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 from the plate surface. A hot film sensor and thermochromic liquid crystals coated on the test surface were used to demonstrate the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics, respectively. The maximum temperature reduction of 3.5 °C was observed in the case of Z = 1.5. By employing a horn-type transducer, the acoustic jet and cavitation phenomena played a key role in destabilizing the thermal and velocity boundary layers, which resulted in a decrease in surface temperature. The incident wave shape was triangular, with an enlarging lateral zone along the flow stream. When the waves were released at Z = 1.5, the local Nusselt number was increased up to 2.55 compared to without waves. Under ultrasonic effects, the near-wall flow velocity was detected to be decreasing upstream prior to the incident zone while increasing in the incident region. When waves existed, the highest turbulent intensity was up to 29 times more intense than it was in the absence of waves. Furthermore, a predictive formula for the Nusselt number with ultrasound was established depending on the local Reynolds number and the distance between the ultrasonic source and test surface.

Abstract:In the present study, a passive technique for heat transfer enhancement was used to affect the turbulence and eddies via an oscillating plate in a flow. The movement of the plate in the fluid domain was solved by a two-way fluid-solid interaction analysis. The increase in heat transfer by this method caused an increase in the friction coefficient, and paying attention to the heat transfer and pressure loss simultaneously is important. The role of the cylinder shape, cylinder location, and the length of the flexible plate in the heat transfer and pressure loss were investigated. It can be concluded that a bluff body before the oscillating plate can improve the performance evaluation criterion (PEC) by 13.75%. In addition, reducing the length of the plate by half can reduce the PEC number by 8%. The shape of the cylinder also has a significant effect on the heat transfer ratio and pressure loss. The best case was one with a circular cylinder behind the oscillating plate with a larger length with a PEC of 0.8.

Abstract:In this paper, a combination of numerical simulation and experimental investigation is carried out. A study on the effect of low-frequency acoustic waves on the flow field and convective heat transfer in the unit structure of a staggered heat exchanger is presented. Air is considered as background free flow, with a Reynolds number of 200. The range of the pipe pitch ratio is 2.2–5, the frequency range of the sound wave is 50–200 Hz, and the range of the sound pressure level is 115–135 dB. The results highlighted that the reattachment phenomenon on the downstream cylindrical surface gradually disappeared with the addition of external acoustic perturbation. Additionally, the lift coefficient increases with an increase in the sound pressure level, and the larger the pitch ratio, the greater the vortex shedding frequency. At the same time, the drag coefficient also increases. As both the sound frequency and pressure level increase, the array surface localization and average Nusselt number increase. In particular, when S/D = 5, multiple acoustic incidences and reflections occurred on the wall at the array gap. According to the acoustic superposition principle, it is noted that the acoustic energy reinforced the fluid flow at the gap. This leads to an improvement of 75 % in the array surface-averaged convective heat transfer compared to the acoustic perturbation case with no sound. The findings of the experiments demonstrated the ability of acoustic waves to enhance convective heat transfer on the surface of cylindrical arrangements.
