Abstract:Ni-based superalloys rely on high volume fractions of L12 ordered γ′ phase precipitates for strength against creep deformation at elevated temperatures. However, under certain conditions dislocations existing in the FCC γ matrix may enter the L12 γ′ phase in pairs. The shear motion of different combinations of dislocation pairs creates different planar defects in the γ′ phase, including anti-phase boundaries (APB) or stacking faults. The formation of an APB requires the shear distortion associated with an a/2〈110〉 dislocation and the formation of a stacking fault requires the shear distortion associated with a k〈112〉 dislocation. Given that the native dislocations in FCC structure are a/2〈110〉, the formation mechanism of k〈112〉 dislocations remains to be clarified. Different mechanisms have been suggested for the formation of stacking faults in the γ′ phase in the literature. In this study, the shearing motions of various partial dislocation pairs and the planar defects formed in the γ′ phase were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and the mechanisms were analyzed in terms of their crystallographic and energetic implications.

Abstract:Using real space pair distribution functions derived from high precision x-ray diffraction data, the local atomic structure of Zr–Ni and Zr–Ni–Al metallic glasses was investigated. Unlike Zr–Cu metallic glasses, the structure of Zr–Ni metallic glasses cannot be approached with an ideal solution model, due to strong attractive interactions between Zr and Ni atoms, which promote chemical short range order. Addition of Al can be beneficial for the glass forming ability of Zr–Ni metallic glasses. The atomic size of Al, being intermediate to those of Zr and Ni and the strongly attractive interactions between Zr–Al and Zr–Ni atoms can lead to highly negative volumes of mixing ΔVmix, and to denser atomic structures, reduced atomic mobility in the liquid and easier suppression of crystallization in the undercooled liquid state

Abstract:Abstract A systematic high-resolution electron microscopy study of a special type of two-dimensional defects, phason planes, has been carried out in the structurally complex metallic alloys of Al –Pd –Mn and Al –Ni –Rh. The structural characteristics of the phason planes in these two alloys consist of pentagon-banana pairs of polygons but with a different arrangement. Located on the vertex of the polygons are pseudo-Mackay atomic clusters. The detailed atomic structures of the phason planes in both ξ′- and ξ-phases of the two alloys have been determined by means of high-resolution electron microscopy and theoretical simulations. The possible ways of displacement of the phason planes in the complex alloys are discussed.
Defects in ZIF-8 crystallization and their impact on mechanical properties

Abstract:The growth process of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) defines their properties for functional applications. However, it is very plausible that defects may occur during the crystallization of even seemingly perfect MOFs, such as ZIF-8, and yet, direct probing of such structural defects has been challenging due to the lack of techniques to locally examine individual nanocrystals. Now, we directly study local defects - such as missing linkers or metal vacancies - in ZIF-8 nano- and microcrystals with near-field infrared nanospectroscopy combined with density function theory calculations. We have tracked the chemical changes during crystallization and found that structural defects like zinc-rich regions gradually disappear with the ripening of the crystals, while missing linker defects prevail. The resulting open metal sites reduce the Young's modulus, as measured with tip force microscopy and supported by theoretical modelling, but also open the door for defect engineering to tune the adsorption and catalytic performance of ZIF-8.

Compact A15 Frank-Kasper nano-phases at the origin of dislocation loops in face-centred cubic metals

Abstract:It is generally considered that the elementary building blocks of defects in face-centred cubic (fcc) metals, e.g., interstitial dumbbells, coalesce directly into ever larger 2D dislocation loops, implying a continuous coarsening process. Here, we reveal that, prior to the formation of dislocation loops, interstitial atoms in fcc metals cluster into compact 3D inclusions of A15 Frank-Kasper phase. After reaching the critical size, A15 nano-phase inclusions act as a source of prismatic or faulted dislocation loops, dependent on the energy landscape of the host material. Using cutting-edge atomistic simulations we demonstrate this scenario in Al, Cu, and Ni. Our results explain the enigmatic 3D cluster structures observed in experiments combining diffuse X-ray scattering and resistivity recovery. Formation of compact nano-phase inclusions in fcc structure, along with previous observations in bcc structure, suggests that the fundamental mechanisms of interstitial defect formation are more complex than historically assumed and require a general revision. Interstitial-mediated formation of compact 3D precipitates can be a generic phenomenon, which should be further explored in systems with different crystallographic lattices.

We track the chemical changes during crystallization and show that structural defects like zinc cations that are bound to molecules of the reactant gradually disappear with ripening of the crystals, while dangling and missing linker defects prevail. The resulting defect-terminating groups or open-metal sites produce mechanical anisotropy and reduce the Young's modulus, as measured via tip force microscopy with nanoscale resolution and supported by theoretical modeling. Elastic stiffness tensors of Zr-$x$Nb alloy in presence of defects: A molecular dynamics study

Abstract:In a nuclear reactor, the Zr-$x$Nb alloy, which is used as a structural material in the core region, is irradiated by energetic particles that cause the atoms to be displaced from their lattice sites and giving rise to crystal defects. The local changes in the atomic arrangements lead to local deformations of the solid and thereby changes of its local mechanical properties. Understanding the mechanisms behind this evolution in the core region of a reactor, and its monitoring or controlling is a critical task in nuclear industry. In this work, using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the effects of radiation damage on the local mechanical properties of Zr-$x$Nb alloy. In the first step, the effect of Nb-concentration on the mechanical stability of homogeneous Zr-$x$Nb alloy is investigated. In the second step, we have studied the local changes of the elastic constants due to local changes of the microstructure. These local changes include presence and accumulation of vacancies in the form of dislocation loops or voids, accumulation of Nb atoms in the form of clusters of different morphologies. This study covers both cases of $T=0^\circ$K and finite temperatures up to $T=600^\circ$K.

Abstract:This work investigates the atomic scale substructure of interfaces in Zr2Si secondary phase precipitates formed by the stresses associated with the α-Zr (HCP) to γ-Zr (FCC) phase transformation and thermal effects in an experimental Si-modified Zircaloy-4 by means of transmission electron microscopy and CSL/DSCL (coincident site lattice/displacement shift complete lattice) models. Analysis of a high-angle twin interface reveals their characteristic principal primary Δg vectors, a typical feature of the singular interfaces, and the sessile twinning disconnections. The step height and length of the interfacial dislocation line, with the Burgers vector parallel to the habit plane, are analysed using the DSCL model. In the second case, a low-angle interface of mixed tilt-twist character is studied and facets of constant length along the densest-packed planes and ledges of inconstant height, a common feature of vicinal interfaces, are identified.

Abstract:Atomic disorders and defects in thermoelectric semiconductors can significantly affect their electronic and phonon transport. In this work, we report the studies of Ni atomic disorder in ZrNiSn by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Three different ZrNiSn polycrystalline and single-crystalline samples were synthesized under different processes from thermodynamically non-equilibrium conditions to more equilibrium ones, as demonstrated by characterizing their phase structure and transport properties. Atomic-resolution high-angle annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy was employed to study the Ni atomic disorder. The polycrystalline sample prepared by levitation melting exhibited a strong local composition fluctuation, while the sample after further long-term annealing and the single crystal exhibited a more uniform distribution of Ni at the 4c and 4d sites. These results reveal the evolution of Ni atomic disorder in different samples that were prepared under different thermodynamic conditions, which will be helpful to understand the Ni atomic disorder and its relationship with thermoelectric transport in the representative half-Heusler system ZrNiSn.
The geometry, electronic and magnetic properties of ZrnNi (n = 2-14) clusters: A first-principles jointed particle-swarm-optimization investigation

Abstract:Zirconium-nickel binary alloys and metal glass have superior performance like ultrahigh fracture strength, good toughness. In this paper, the structures of small-sized ZrnNi (n = 2-14) clusters have been searched using the particle swarm algorithm in combination with density-functional theory (DFT). The geometrical configuration tends to form a three-dimensional structure as the number of atoms in the cluster increases. By calculating the average binding energy per atom, second-order difference of energy, and dissociation energy of ZrnNi (n = 2-14) clusters, it is demonstrated that ZrnNi (n = 7, 12) clusters are more stable than their neighbors, and can be used as a candidate structure for magic number clusters. The electron localization function (ELF) calculations reveal those metallic bonds of Zr-Ni and Zr-Zr atoms. The Adaptive natural density partitioning results show that there are 20 three-center and 7 seven-center two-electron orbitals which make the quenching of magnetic moments of Zr12Ni atoms.

Structure and glass-forming ability of simulated Ni-Zr alloys

Abstract:Binary Cu-Zr system is a representative bulk glassformer demonstrating high glass forming ability due to pronounced icosahedral local ordering. From the first glance, Ni-Zr system is the most natural object to expect the same behavior because nickel and copper are neighbours in the periodic table and have similar physicochemical properties. However, doing molecular dynamics simulations of $\rm Ni_{\alpha}Zr_{1-\alpha}$ alloys described by embedded atom model potential, we observe different behaviour. We conclude that the Ni-Zr system has the same glass-forming ability as an additive binary Lennard-Jones mixture without any chemical interaction. The structural analysis reveals that icosahedral ordering in Ni-Zr alloys is much less pronounced than that in the Cu-Zr ones. We suggest that lack of icosahedral ordering due to peculiarities of interatomic interactions is the reason of relatively poor glass-forming ability of Ni-Zr system.

Abstract:This study provides new insights into the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of single-crystal NiCrCoFeMn high entropy alloys (HEAs) containing circular and block defects, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It explores the effects of varying defect sizes, substrate temperatures, and strain rates on the material's response under uniaxial tension. The results reveal that mechanical properties such as yield stress and Young's modulus decrease as defect size increases. Specifically, the stress concentration factor (SCF) increases as the radius of circular defects expands from 15 to 30 Å, and initially rises with block defects up to 35.36×35.36 Ų, but decreases as their size increases. The deformation mechanism starts with local strain nucleating around the circular defect and at the corners of the block defect, underscoring the significant role of defect shapes in initiating deformation across all samples. During uniaxial tension, phase transformations occur, resulting in the formation of stacking faults (SF), twinning (T), and partial dislocations (PD). Additionally, higher strain rates markedly boost the development of HCP, BCC, and amorphous structures. Dislocations initially form around defect shapes and extend towards free surfaces as strain escalates. Predominant dislocations during deformation include Shockley partial and Stair-rod dislocations. The total dislocation length increases with smaller defect sizes and higher strain rates, while it decreases at elevated temperatures due to enhanced atomic mobility, which facilitates dislocation movement and annihilation.

Abstract:Here, we investigate a new type of kink structure that is found at gamma/gamma' interfaces in nickel-based single crystal superalloys. We studied these structures at the atomic and elemental level using aberration corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). The core of the dislocation absorbs high-Z elements (i.e., Co and Re) that adopt hexagonal arrangements, and it extrudes elements (i.e., Ni and Al) that adopt face centered cubic (fcc) structures. High-Z elements (i.e., Ta and W) and Cr, which is a low-Z element, are stabilized in body centered cubic (bcc) arrangements; Cr tends to behave like Re. High-Z elements, which migrate and adopt a hexagonal structure, induce kink formation at gamma/gamma' interfaces. This process must be analyzed to fully understand the kinetics and dynamics of creep in nickel-based single crystal superalloys. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Using high angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, we report the formation of a five-fold symmetry structure at the (1 ̄100)η//(110)Al edge interface of otherwise defect-free η 2 precipitates in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. This quasicrystal entity has a demonstrated ability to hinder growth at the interface where it resides. Assisted by calculations based on density functional theory , the five-fold symmetry structure is shown to form easily at Zn-rich conditions due to favorable interfacial energies at all stages of evolution. These findings offer an enhanced perspective of precipitate stabilization in an alloy of widespread industrial interest, presenting a potential alternative path to alloy design.

Abstract:The half-metallic property of Zr 2 NiZ (Z=Al, Ga, In) Heusler alloys with the Hg 2 CuTi-type structure has been studied. In Zr 2 NiZ (Z=Al, Ga, In) Heusler alloys, it is found that spin up states are metallic and spin down states have the semiconducting band gaps. It shows that these Heusler alloys are half-metallic. From the band structure of spin down state, it is observed that these alloys have the indirect band gap. The non-spin polarised and spin polarized calculations predicted that the ferromagnetic ground state energy is less than the non- magnetic ground state energy which shows that these alloys are ferromagnetic in nature. The total magnetic moments of the Zr 2 NiZ alloys are calculated to be around 3.0 μB for these Zr 2 NiZ (Z=Al, Ga, In) Heusler alloys. These alloys obey Slater Pauling rule μ t = Zt −18. The optical properties like dielectric function, refractive index, energy loss function, reflectivity and absorption coefficient and extinction coefficients are computed for the first time. Structure and stability of small self-interstitials clusters in zirconium

Abstract:Density Functional Theory and Embedded Atom Method potential calculations of small self-interstitials clusters in the hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure of zirconium have been performed. It is shown that by adding two self-interstitials in the lattice, the most stable configuration is triangular and contained into the basal plane. This particular configuration has been found in density functional theory and embedded atom method potential simulations. The same work is done by inserting three self-interstitials and the triangular configuration is again found as the most stable one. The study continues by adding self-interstitials to the planar structure and by reaching seven in density functional theory and thirty in embedded atom method potential calculations. The planar defect keeps a triangular configuration until seven self-interstitials, and beyond this amount, the triangle collapses by its summits into a hexagonal configuration. By considering it, an energetic model is proposed to describe the planar defect from two to seven self-interstitials. The stability of the identified configurations and the energetic model proposed constitute an important element to take into account when predicting the microstructural evolution of zirconium-based materials under irradiation.

Abstract:Extensive analysis has been performed to understand the key structural motifs accounting for the difference in glass forming ability in the Zr-Cu and Zr-Ni binary alloy systems. Here, the reliable atomic structure models of Zr2CuxNi1−x (x = 0, 0.5, 1) are constructed using the combination of X-ray diffraction experiments, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and a constrained reverse Monte Carlo method. We observe a systematic variation of the interatomic distance of different atomic pairs with respect to the alloy composition. The ideal icosahedral content in all samples is limited, despite the high content of five-fold symmetry motifs. We also demonstrate that the population of Z-clusters in Zr2Cu glass is much higher than that in the Zr2Ni and Zr2Cu0.5Ni0.5 samples. And Z12 ⟨0, 0, 12, 0⟩ Voronoi polyhedra clusters prefer to form around Cu atoms, while Ni-centered clusters are more like Z11 ⟨0, 2, 8, 1⟩ clusters, which is less energetically stable compared to Z12 clusters. These two different structural properties may account for the higher glass forming ability of Zr2Cu alloy than that of Zr2Ni alloy.

Abstract:The deformation mechanisms in the refractory high entropy alloy AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr have been investigated, with their potential impact on ductility. Specifically, the modes of plasticity active in the B2 matrix and in an alloyed version of the phase Al4Zr5 found at grain and subgrain boundaries were explored by use of nano-indentation. For the B2 phase, a combination of weak-beam dark-field and superlattice imaging revealed dissociation of 〈 111 〉 superdislocations into two superpartial dislocations, bounding an anti-phase boundary (APB), following the reaction: a 〈 111 〉 = a / 2 〈 111 〉 +APB+ a / 2 〈 111 〉 . The dislocations in the B2 phase exhibited long, relatively straight screw segments and short edge segments, such that the mobility of the edge dislocations appears to be higher than that of the screw segments. Evidence of a B2 to bcc slip transmission process has been observed through use of stereo-pair imaging and anaglyph construction. This process involves the transmission of slip from the B2 matrix, followed by the decorrelated motion of the two a / 2 〈 111 〉 dislocations in the bcc precipitate, demonstrated by the increased separation of the dislocations within the bcc phase. Regarding the deformation of the Al4Zr5 intermetallic phase, it was found that indentation of this phase resulted in no evidence of dislocation generation and motion, and cracking at the edges of the given indent. It has been concluded that the lack of plasticity of this phase is the cause of the room temperature brittle nature of this alloy.

Abstract:Neutron irradiation progressively changes the properties of zirconium alloys: they harden and their average c/a lattice parameter ratio decreases with fluence. The bombardment by neutrons produces point defects, which evolve into dislocation loops that contribute to a non-uniform growth phenomenon called irradiation-induced growth (IIG). To gain insights into these dislocation loops in Zr we studied them using atomistic simulation. We constructed and relaxed dislocation loops of various types. We find that the energies of <a>-loops on different habit planes are similar, but our results indicate that they are most likely to form on the 1st prismatic plane and then reduce their energy by rotating onto the 2nd prismatic plane. By simulating loops of different aspect ratios, we find that, based on energetics alone, the shape of <a>-loops does not depend on character, and that these loops become increasingly elliptical as their size increases. Additionally, we find that interstitial <c/2+p>-loops and vacancy <c>-loops are both energetically feasible and so the possibility of these should be considered in future work. Our findings offer important insights into loop formation and evolution, which are difficult to probe experimentally.

Crucial Role of Ni Point Defects and Sb Doping for Tailoring the Thermoelectric Properties of ZrNiSn Half-Heusler Alloy: An Ab Initio Study

Abstract:In the wide group of thermoelectric compounds, the half-Heusler ZrNiSn alloy is one of the most promising materials thanks to its thermal stability and narrow band gap, which open it to the possibility of mid-temperature applications. A large variety of defects and doping can be introduced in the ZrNiSn crystalline structure, thus allowing researchers to tune the electronic band structure and enhance the thermoelectric performance. Within this picture, theoretical studies of the electronic properties of perfect and defective ZrNiSn structures can help with the comprehension of the relation between the topology of defects and the thermoelectric features. In this work, a half-Heusler ZrNiSn alloy is studied using different defective models by means of an accurate Density Functional Theory supercell approach. In particular, we decided to model the most common defects related to Ni, which are certainly present in the experimental samples, i.e., interstitial and antisite Ni and a substitutional defect consisting of the replacement of Sn with Sb atoms using concentrations of 3% and 6%. First of all, a comprehensive characterization of the one-electron properties is performed in order to gain deeper insight into the relationship between structural, topological and electronic properties. Then, the effects of the modeled defects on the band structure are analyzed, with particular attention paid to the region between the valence and the conduction bands, where the defective models introduce in-gap states with respect to the perfect ZrNiSn crystal. Finally, the electronic transport properties of perfect and defective structures are computed using semi-classical approximation in the framework of the Boltzmann transport theory as implemented in the Crystal code. The dependence obtained of the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor on the temperature and the carrier concentration shows reasonable agreement with respect to the experimental counterpart, allowing possible rationalization of the effect of the modeled defects on the thermoelectric performance of the synthesized samples. As a general conclusion, defect-free ZrNiSn crystal appears to be the best candidate for thermoelectric applications when compared to interstitial and antisite Ni defective models, and substitutional defects of Sn with Sb atoms (using concentrations of 3% and 6%) do not appreciably improve electronic transport properties.
