Abstract:For traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), its most common application form is TCM formulae that assemble herbs and other materials together to treat diseases. According to the shared herbs or similar indications, most TCM formulae (Fangji or FJ in Chinese) can be grouped into several categories, namely analogous TCM formulae. Similarities/dissimilarities between these analogous TCM formulae provide a unique opportunity to understand mechanisms of action of TCM and discover biologically active compounds or components, as well as rationalize clinical use of TCM formulae. In this work, high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) coupled with microplate-based rapid screening assays was used to carry out systematic chemical analysis of the Wu-Ling-San (WLS) formula group. A total of thirty-seven compounds were identified in WLS and their MS fragmentation pathways were clarified. Seven potential anti-inflammatory components were discovered in WLS and other three analogous formulae by nitric oxide assay-based screening. The differences in chemical profiles and related mechanisms of action of the WLS group were discussed, which were reported for the first time and would be helpful for further pharmacological studies. Our results showed that this method is very effective and powerful for the research into TCM analogous formulae.
Origin and Evolution of China Pharmacopoeia and Its Implication for Traditional Medicines

Abstract:Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a history that can be dated back to several thousand years ago. The extant earliest medical book is Huangdi Neijing (Canon of Internal Medicine, 770 BC~221 BC), and the earliest pharmacy monograph is Shengnong Bencao Jing (Shengnong Materia Medica, AD25~AD220). The most influential pharmacy monograph is the Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica, AD1368~AD1644). There were also many other far-reaching influencial monographs, which become the main and the most important derived resources of modern China pharmacopoeia for TCM. In this paper, we try to introduce some representative medicine and pharmacy works of ancient China, and elaborate the origin, development and improvement process of modern China pharmacopoeia, which may have referential significance for traditional and natural drugs. China Pharmacopoeia and TCM still have to face many problems in authenticity discrimination, action mechanism, and adverse reaction, etc. The improvement of China Pharmacopoeia still has room for progress with the solutions of modern analytical methods to the problems. The start-up and development of Herbalomics project will be helpful to further improve the China Pharmacopoeia, especially Chinese patented medicine and compound prescription.

Abstract:Mycoplasma pneumoniae, formerly called the primary atypical pneumonia agent, is an important respiratory pathogen in man.' Before this agent had been identified as a mycoplasma, the immunofluorescence (IFL) technique was for several years the only practically useful method for the demonstration of antibodies to this microorganism.* At that time the antigen used in the IFL test consisted of frozen sections of bronchi from chick embryos infected with the agent. Later, when the organism could be cultivated on agar, it became possible to use colonies of M. pneumoniae transferred to glass slides as antigen in the IFL test.3 However, other less laborious techniques such as complement fixation (CF), indirect hemagglutination, and metabolic or tetrazolium reduction inhibition are now commonly used for the demonstration of serum antibodies to M. pneumniae.' For the investigation of M. pneumoniae antibodies in bronchial secretions, we chose the IFL technique since this method measures antibodies of all the three main immunoglobulin classes and permits the determination of the immunoglobulin class of the antibodies without previous fractionation of the specimens.

Abstract:This article will review selected herbal products used in traditional Chinese medicine, including medicinal mushrooms ( bā xī mó gū; Agaricus blazei, yún zhī; Coriolus versicolor, líng zhī; Ganoderma lucidum, xiāng xùn; shiitake, Lentinus edodes, niú zhāng zhī; Taiwanofungus camphoratus), Cordyceps ( dōng chóng xià cǎo), pomegranate ( shí liú; Granati Fructus), green tea ( lǜ chá; Theae Folium Non Fermentatum), garlic ( dà suàn; Allii Sativi Bulbus), turmeric ( jiāng huáng; Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), and Artemisiae Annuae Herba ( qīng hāo; sweet wormwood). Many of the discussed herbal products have gained popularity in their uses as dietary supplements for health benefits. The review will focus on the active constituents of the herbs and their bioactivities, with emphasis on the most recent progress in research for the period of 2003 to 2011.
A novel strategy for the multi-components division and discovering pharmacodynamic material basis of Chinese herbal compounds: A case study of Xian-Ling-Gu-Bao capsule

Abstract:The therapeutic effects of Chinese herbal compounds are often achieved through the synergistic interactions of multiple ingredients. However, current research predominantly focuses on individual ingredients, neglecting the holistic nature of Chinese herbal compounds. This study proposes a novel strategy to elucidate the pharmacodynamic material basis of Chinese herbal compounds based on their multi-components (components named 'ZuFen' in China, it refers to multiple ingredients with similar chemical structures) composition, using the Xian-Ling-Gu-Bao (XLGB) capsule as a case study. Cheminformatics-based components partitioning was conducted after sourcing ingredients from various databases, resulting in a total of 856 ingredients which were categorized into nine major components. Furthermore, the pharmacodynamic ingredients of XLGB capsule were determined by analyzing the ingredients that were absorbed into the bloodstream. Through a combination of these ingredients and screening for absorption, the Dipsacus asper saponin components, Psoralea corylifolia coumarin components, and Epimedium flavonoid polyglycosides components were isolated. The anti-osteoporosis efficacy of these components were evaluated in zebrafish, demonstrating their capability to reverse mineralization reduction caused by prednisolone. These findings further support the idea that these components serve as the material basis for the pharmacological efficacy of XLGB capsule. This study provides a novel systematic strategy for discovering the pharmacodynamic material basis of the efficacy of Chinese herbal compounds based on a 'multi-components' perspective.

Abstract:Chinese herbal medicine features strong national characteristics, and carries heavy cultural connotations. The use of Chinese herbal medicine originated in ancient China, which was called Japanese Kampo medicine after it was introduced into Japan. With the close cultural exchanges between China and Japan and the continuous improvement of medical technology, Chinese herbal medicine has become more and more appreciated and recognized by the Japanese for its unique charm. At the same time, the research on herbology in China and Japan has also been unprecedentedly developed. Based on the purpose of mutual learning and reference, this paper discusses the Japanese-Chinese translation studies of the popular science text of traditional Chinese pharmacology in Japan.

Abstract:Ben Cao Quan is an ancient classic book on materia medica compiled by Goku Yoshida, a Japanese scholar in the Edo period (1603-1867). A total of 568 materia medica in 53 categories in Ben Cao Quan came from Ben Cao Gang Mu compiled by Li Shizhen in the Ming Dynasty. These materia medica were introduced with some of his own interpretations of Goku Yoshida. The main characteristics of Ben Cao Quan reflected as follows. It attached importance to the comparison of translation from Chinese into Japanese and selected those materia medica commonly used in Japan, in particular, from 'spicific explanation' (Ji Jie) and 'smell' (Qi Wei) in Ben Cao Gang Mu.It focused on application and integrated local practice, and interpreted the personal insights of Goku Yoshida.Goku Yoshida's personal understanding and perception of these material medica were shown in terms of their origin and quality, analysis of their properties and collection, interpretation of their identification and selection, their local names, their Japanese names, and review of the changes when these materia medica were introduced into Japan.The purpose of Ban Cao Quan was to attempt to help Japanese identify materia medica and distinguish quality and interpret materia medica with Japanese characteristics. The book is valuable literature for the research of the impact of Ben Cao Gang Mu on the development of materia medica in Japan.
Symbolic features for classification of medical X-ray body organ images

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a model for symbolic representation and classification of medical X-ray body organ images. Medical X-ray body organ images are segmented using graph cut segmentation method. Based on the boundary of a segmented body organ image, the geometric centroid points are localized. A complete directed graph is then constructed over the centroid points. Subsequently, distance and orientation features are extracted from the constructed graph. The obtained features are used to form an interval valued feature vector representation. Finally, a symbolic classifier is explored to classify medical X-ray body organ images. Our proposed model is simple and efficient.

Abstract:This study is about Haiyaobencao(海藥本草) by Li Xun (907-965), a unique book on medicinal herbs in the history of Chinese herbal medicine and explore how the knowledge of Haiyao(海藥) brought in from abroad or from the southern region around the 10th century was accumulated and disseminated in later periods. When the contents of Haiyaobencao examined closely, its characteristics as a ‘regional’ medicinal herb book stand out. First, in terms of the description method, unlike the characteristics seen in the previous so-called traditional medicinal herb books, the origin of the herb is mentioned first, and an emphasis was placed on clarifying the herb’s origin. Moreover, various references were cited while introducing related information. Most of the references cited were geography(地志) and natural history(博物志) of the south. All of these points show the characteristics of Haiyaobencao as a regional medicinal herb book. Haiyaobencao is significant because the knowledge of herbal medicine from scattered regions is gathered together in it. The significance of Haiyaobencao is very clear in terms of accumulation and expansion of Chinese herbal knowledge. First, about 10 kinds of herbs listed in Haiyaobencao are those that are not observed in previous medicinal herb books. In addition, 6 kinds of herbs were already mentioned in Bencaoshiyi(本草拾遺) in the 8th century, but later the author of Zhengleibencao(證類本草) specified Haiyaobencao as the original source. Additionally, when a total of 19 types of herbs including these are included in Bencaogangmu(本草綱目), Haiyaobencao is specified as the original source. Clearly, Haiyaobencao played an important role in introducing the new herbs of the region and disseminating it after being included in the authoritative medical herb book on a national scale. Haiyaobencao also supplemented related knowledge by citing various references in the area of production and efficacy of Haiyao which was already widely known. This supplementary knowledge also includes various historical facts and anecdotes related to herbs. Almost all of the supplemented knowledge is converged into Zhengleibencao and Bencaogangmu. This is the part where we can confirm the significance of Haiyaobencao in the accumulation and dissemination of knowledge on exotic medical herbs abroad or in the south. In conclusion, Haiyaobencao, which collected overseas and southern herbal knowledge during the pre-Five Dynasties period, has characteristics which are different from existing traditional medicinal herb books, as it addresses 'regional' knowledge. It holds various local literature records that have been handed down sporadically and systematized as herbal knowledge. Moreover, the results were later included in Zhengleibencao, a nationwide medicinal herb book during the Song Period. In addition, it is included in Bencaogangmu, which can be called a compilation of herbal medicine in China. Through this, the influence of the regional medicinal herb book of the southern author during the Five Dynasties period on the formation of the ‘imperial’ herbology thereafter can be explored.
Study on the Classification and Publication of Dahe Materia Medica—Focusing on the Comparison with Compendium of Materia Medica

Abstract:The development of modern Japanese materia medica began with the passing of the Book Compendium of Materia Medica to Japan. With the spread and popularity of compendium of Materia Medica and the influence of Confucian thoughts such as “learning from things to know”, Beiyuan Yixuan, a Confucianist, herbalist and naturalist, has become Japan’s first original materia medica natural history work - Daiwa materia medica. Among them, there are 772 kinds collected from compendium of Materia Medica, except for the parts not owned by Japan, 203 kinds collected from other bibliographies, 358 kinds produced in Japan and 29 kinds imported from the Netherlands. A total of 1362 varieties were collected. This paper intends to analyze the origin relationship between compendium of Materia Medica and Da he materia medica. The investigation of Da he materia medica has important reference value for exploring the influence of compendium of Materia Medica on its eastward transmission to Japan and re examining the significance of the translation, introduction and dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine culture with traditional Chinese Medicine Classics as the carrier abroad.

Abstract:The classical famous prescription Dajianzhong Decoction is recorded in Synopsis of the Golden Chamber written by Zhang Zhongjing in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It has a long history and definite clinical effects, while this prescription has not been manufactured into Chinese patent medicine preparation. We collected many ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) by using the method of bibliometrics and got 211 valid data terms which involved 67 ancient books. The history, main treated syndromes, formulation principle, origins and processiong of medicinal materials, and decoction method of Dajianzhong Decoction were analyzed. Despite the different views of various generations of medical experts toward the composition of this prescription, the compatibility ratio of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma to Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens is constant. Furthermore, we explored the origins of synonyms of Dajianzhong Decoction. On the basis of this study, we hope to gain an insight into the research and development of the compound preparations of Dajianzhong Decoction and provide reference for the heritage and innovation of other classical prescriptions.
Foreign Merchants' Trade in Herbal Medicines and Fake Medicaments in Medieval China

Abstract:During the Tang and Song Dynasties, trade with foreigners prospered along the Silk Road. Medicinal herbs were one of the major commodities traded. Foreigners' discernment in this respect was legendary. Stories about them generally showed their professional ethics and personal charm in a good light while overlooking their defects. Driven by the quest for high profits, some foreign merchants made overblown claims for their products, substituted inferior goods, and mixed fake products with real ones, cheating their buyers in terms of the medicaments' function, appearance, color and texture. In the Tang and Song dynasties, some Chinese pharmacologists and literati proposed various means of telling fake medicines from the real thing. Such methods were not only effective in everyday life but also facilitated the evolution of the pharmacology of Chinese herbal medicine.

Abstract:Abstract This article uses GIS mapping to plot the historical locations known for producing Chinese material medica recorded in a text with three historical layers. On the basis of these plots, it argues that: early Chinese pharmacology emerged not from the central plains but along the Yellow River Corridor, from the Bohai Sea through to Chang’an and then beyond, into the Sichuan Plain, and that the drug exchange network may have emerged through stepwise local trading between these sites, as along the Silk Road; these sites are not necessarily biotopes specific to where the drugs grow, but sites of “drug production,” which enter these natural products into circulation; the activity at these sites consists of sociotechnical operations that translate these materials across diverse technical domains, facilitated by drug names as a key marker; and, finally, that comparing these geolocated drug names to terms within excavated recipe literature may indicate a likelihood of the regional origin of certain texts. The Tianhui recipes from Laoguanshan appear to be representative of local drug cultures from northeast China.
The rise of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its materia medica : a comparison of frequency and safety of materials and species used in Europe and China

Abstract:Ethnobotanical Relevance Due to the global rise in the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese materia medica (medicinal materials, or CMM) are giving cause for concern over their evidence base, safety/ possible toxicity, questionable quality and use of endangered species of both animals and plants. However, little if anything is actually known about the range of species used to produce CMM used in Europe and even in China. This study represents the first attempt to identify and compare the most important CMM used in both regions, to begin the process of assessing the risks to public health and possible future benefits. Materials and Methods Data were collected from a convenience sample of TCM practitioners in the EU and mainland China, using a paper/online survey. Among other questions, respondents were asked 1) which conditions they most commonly treated using CMM and the likelihood of them using herbal manufactured products and decoctions in addition to raw herbs; 2) the perceived frequency with which they observed adverse events to CMM; 3) the frequency and reasons for use of 1 herbal formula and 6 specific individual herbs; 4) an open question about other CMM they used, including materials of non-plant origin. Data were entered into PASW statistics package and analysed using frequency tables, cross-tabulations and chi-squared tests to compare EU and Chinese results.

A comparative study on shared-use medicines in Tibetan and Chinese medicine

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Tibetan medicine (TM) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are two independent traditional medical systems. Due to geographical factors, the development of Tibetan medicinal theory is relatively independent, but there are still many shared-use medicines in TM and TCM. However, a thorough and comparative study on those medicines is still absent. This study listed shared-use medicines by TM and TCM and analyzed the similarities and dissimilarities of these two medical systems. This paper also aimed to understand mutual influences like the shared history of TM and TCM and to roughly outline the exchanging process between them.</p><h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3><p class="Para">Shared-use medicines in TM and TCM were listed alphabetically. Information on the scientific name, material name, medicinal parts, and medical efficacy were extracted from publications. Shared-use medicines were grouped according to medicinal properties and medicinal parts used by TM and TCM. The historical origin and current status of clinical prescriptions of shared-use medicines were analyzed.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">A total of 136 shared-use medicines in TM and TCM were listed. Shared-use medicines that were used for a similar purpose in TM and TCM accounted for 14% of the total, while those used for different purposes accounted for 49% of the total, with some of the latter being commonly used in TCM. Shared-use medicinal herbs that originated from both Tibetan and Han regions accounted for 49% of the total, and those that were imported from South Asia and Southeast Asia were frequently observed in TM.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusion</h3><p class="Para">Owing to its unique geographical location and cultural diversity, the Tibetan region played a role as a development cradle for various traditional medicinal theories and knowledge. Medicinal knowledge was exchanged between TM and TCM during their parallel independent growth. Shared-use medicines in TM and TCM were mostly determined by flora similarity and medicinal trade, and they marked significant differences in their medicinal properties. However, medicines that were used for similar purposes in TM and TCM presented obvious commercial medicinal characteristic as well as the same chemical profile. The Tibetan region not only provided medicinal usage knowledge of TCM, but also served as a supply of medicinal resources attributing to "high altitude" locations.</p>

Abstract:It is of a tremendous challenge for analysis and quality elaboration for traditional Chinese medicine due to its extremely complexity. TCM is an extremely complex system, which contains hundreds or even thousands of chemical components in a single herb, not to mention the compound formulas composed of a handful of even tens of herbs. This generates gigantic hurdle to clarify its chemical composition, which is the fundamental basis for the research of quality control, mechanism, pharmacological and toxicological actions, PK/PD, clinical trial, new drug discovery, etc. Thanks to the new analytical technique advancement, comprehensive analysis of traditional Chinese medicines and other herbal medicines becomes pragmatic and viable. In the past several decades, our research team has devoted to the herbal analysis by using combination of newly developed techniques on the basis of UPLC, 2DLC, HRLCMS, UPC2, etc. to facilitate the comprehensive analysis of chemical components in herbal complex systems. Several typical herbs were exemplified by using this approach. For examples, a series of closely related herbs of Panax species named Panax ginseng and its processed products dubbed Red Ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, Panax notoginseng and their different plant parts were analyzed by LCQ
