Abstract:Shiguzhai Hui Ju Jian Bian Dan Fang, was the only medical book for prescription and formula collected and compiled by Wu Mianxue in the period of the Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1573-1620). It had seven volumes in total with six of them popular at that time. The volumes contained 1,460 folk formula and clinical prescriptions which were divided into 111 categories based on their corresponding symptoms of diseases. The set was issued in the beginning of the 17th century, with only three subsets of the volumes left in China today. The three remained versions were the subset of volumes 4-5 left in the Ming Dynasty in the Medical College of Tianjin, the subset of volumes 1-2 and 6-7, with preface, left in the seventeenth of the Shun Zhi Period in the Qing Dynasty (1660) in the Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine and the subset of volumes 4 and 6-7 from time unknown. Additionally, three unabridged versions were found in the Cabinet Library of the National Archives of Japan. They were the Ming version with preface of the seventeenth of the Shun Zhi Period in the Qing Dynasty and a hand-copied version left in the Edo period. It was found that the preface in the seventeenth of the Shun Zhi Period in the Qing Dynasty in both of these versions in China as well as the version in Japan, were counterfeit. The main texts in these versions were edited according to the Ming version. The hand-copied version in Japan was transcribed by Kasahara Eisan and edited by Tanba Motoken according to the Ming version in the late Edo Period.
Discovery of itacolumites in the central highlands of Madagascar

Abstract:The presence of itacolumites, or flexible quartzites, and the precise geological descriptions of the same have hitherto been reported only in India, Brazil, and the Appalachian region of the USA. In this paper, we report the discovery of itacolumites from three localities in the central highlands of Madagascar. The localities are underlain by the Mesoproterozoic Itremo Group. The occurrence and petrography of these itacolumites and the results of SEM observations are summarized in this paper. The itacolumites from Madagascar contain very coarse grained one beside the fine-to-medium-grained varieties that are common to India, Brazil, and the Appalachians. Furthermore, the itacolumites of Madagascar occur over a wide area of exposure, supporting the opinion that their formation was a result of chemical weathering.

Abstract:To the Editor.— I was interested in the article "Assisted Ventilation for Patients With Cystic Fibrosis" (239:1851, 1978). My colleagues and I 1 have published data previously that support the authors' conclusions. We reviewed the diagnosis, management, and prognosis in 17 cases of infants with cystic fibrosis and severe respiratory distress who were admitted to the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Boston, between 1968 and 1972. There was a 60% mortality overall. Six of the 17 infants were treated with assisted ventilation, of whom only one survived. These figures are almost identical to those of the nine infants (from several cystic fibrosis centers) reviewed by Davis and di Sant'Agnese. Our subsequent experience with assisted ventilation has shown no improvement in the survival of these infants.

Abstract:Wan's gynecology and obstetrics (Wan Shi Nv Ke), collected by the library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, was examined with the field method. It was found some issues existed both in the recording and description of Wan's gynecology and obstetrics (Wan Shi Nv Ke) collected by the library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in the electronic catalogue of ancient books and in the General catalogue of ancient books of traditional Chinese Medicine (Zhong Guo Zhong Yi Gu Ji Zong Mu), in terms of the same version with different registration, wrong publication time, some contents missed in publication, and the version actually not collected.

Abstract:Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang(Brief collectanea of prescriptions which are benefit to common people)《》 was the 4th medical formulary promulgated by the Song government. Zhou Ying, the medical officer of the Hanlin Academy, was called to compile this book.The content of it mainly came from Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang, compiled by Wang Huaiyin under the order of the Emperor, and the collection of various effective prescriptions. But this book was lost in the late Ming Dynasty. The primary edition of Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang was published in the third year of Huangyou(1051 AD). It was not only given to the counties by the Song government at that time, but also effectively handed down and applied in Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Besides, this book has been spread to such places as Korea and Japan. The extant content of Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang was mainly preserved in such medical books as The classified collection of medical prescriptions 《의방유쥐》》 collected by Kim Ye-mong in Korea; Da Guan Jing Shi Zheng Lei Beiji Bencao《》originally edited by medical expert Tang Shenwei、proofread and supplemented by Ai Sheng; Chong Xiu Zheng He Jing Shi Zheng Lei Bei Yong Ben Cao 《》originally edited by Tang Shenwei、proofread and supplemented by Cao Xiaozhong, revised and enlarged by Zhang Cunhui; Mananpou《》edited by Kajiwara Senzen; Zatsubyou kouyou《》 edited by Tanba Motokata. It contained various categories of symptoms and signs, like liver, heart, spleen, lung, kidney, sanjiao, stroke, defecation and children, as well as hundreds of therapeutic prescriptions to heal different kinds of internal and surgical diseases and plague.

Abstract:The authors report a new anesthetic technique that is especially suitable for the surgery of complicated disorders of ocular motility. Analgesia is achieved by an intravenous dose of Remifentanil, an opioid that is normally used together with propophol as a form of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) for general anesthesia. The advantage of Remifentanil is a rapid increase (1-2 min.) and decrease (3-4 min.) of the effect. Eye muscle surgery can then be performed on a patient who is free of pain and slightly sedated. After the planned eye muscle surgery, while the patient is still under anesthesia, the muscle sutures are tied provisionally. Afterwards, the squint angle can be measured with a cover test and the patient is questioned about the presence of diplopia. If the position of the eye is not satisfactory, the knots can be loosened and the muscle can be fixated in another position.

Abstract:Shanghan Lun Ben Zhi(, Essential intention of Treatise on Febrile Diseases Caused by Cold) have many versions: the edition of Yanshan bookstore was published in the 16th year of Daoguang (1836); the edition of Juwentang was published during the Tongzhi period; the lithographic printing of Licheng Sanyou Yizhai was published in the 1st year of Xuantong (1909); the Qiu Jisheng's edition was published in the 8th year of the Republic of China (1919); the lithographic printing of Shaoxing Moruntang book court was published in the 18th year of the Republic of China (1929); the photocopy of lithographic printing of Licheng Sanyou Yizhai in the 1st year of Xuantong (1909) was published by Taiwan Freedom Press in 1973; the photocopy of Juwentang's edition during the Tongzhi period was published through Xuxiu Siku Quanshu(, Continuation of Complete Library of Four Branches of Literature) by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House in 2002; the photocopy of Tongzhi's edition was published through Zhongyi Guji Zhenben Jicheng (, Integration of Ancient Books of Traditional Chinese Medicine: continued) by Hunan Science and Technology Publishing House in 2014; the point collation edition of Xuxiu Siku Quanshu Shanghan Lei Yizhu Jicheng(, Continuation of the Integration of Typhoid Medical Works in Complete Library of Four Branches of Books) was published by Jiangsu Science and Technology Press in 2010. The photocopy Tongzhi edition of Xuxiu Siku Quanshu was mistakenly entitled "edition of Qing Daoguang Lithography of Yanshan Bookstore Print" . The description of Shanghan Lun Ben Zhi in Zhongguo Zhongyi Guji Zongmu had the edition of Qing Daoguang's 9th year Jichou (1829) and the edition of Guangdong Dasheng pharmaceutical bureau of the Republic of China.
Precision Laser Annealing of Focal Plane Arrays

Abstract:We present results from laser annealing experiments in Si using a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG microlaser. Exposure with laser at fluence values above the damage threshold of commercially available photodiodes results in electrical damage (as measured by an increase in photodiode dark current). We show that increasing the laser fluence to values in excess of the damage threshold can result in annealing of a damage site and a reduction in detector dark current by as much as 100x in some cases. A still further increase in fluence results in irreparable damage. Thus we demonstrate the presence of a laser annealing window over which performance of damaged detectors can be at least partially reconstituted. Moreover dark current reduction is observed over the entire operating range of the diode indicating that device performance has been improved for all values of reverse bias voltage. Additionally, we will present results of laser annealing in Si waveguides. By exposing a small (<10 um) length of a Si waveguide to an annealing laser pulse, the longitudinal phase of light acquired in propagating through the waveguide can be modified with high precision, <15 milliradian per laser pulse. Phase tuning by 180 degrees is exhibited with multiple exposures to one arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer at fluence values below the morphological damage threshold of an etched Si waveguide. No reduction in optical transmission at 1550 nm was found after 220 annealing laser shots. Modeling results for laser annealing in Si are also presented.
Collating and Interpreting the Medical Bamboo Slips Excavated from the Han Tombs in Tianhui Town

Abstract:Abstract In July 2012 through August 2013, four earthen shaft pit tombs with timber chambers were excavated in a cemetery located in Tianhui Town, Jinniu District, Chengdu City. The tombs, which had been looted, were of similar size and aligned in the same south–north orientation. Tomb M3 contained 951 bamboo slips distributed across two compartments of its lower chambers: North II and South II . Most of the texts they contain are of medical interest, though twenty fragments appear to be from legal documents. Based on the content of the discovered slips, it has been suggested that the tomb’s occupant was a physician or medical official. Six of the M3–121 manuscripts found in North II concern medical theory, the causes and symptoms of disease, the nature of the channels of the body ( mai 脈 ), diagnosis, acupuncture, and possibly moxibustion therapy. The dates the texts were transcribed fall within the period when Empress Lü 呂后 (187–181 BCE ) was effectively in power and the reign of Emperor Wendi (r. 180–157 BCE ) of the Western Han dynasty. The M3–137 manuscripts found in South II include two texts entitled the Book of Treating Horses and the Book of the Classic Channels . The dates the texts were copied were earlier than those assigned to the M3–121 manuscripts.

Abstract:Shang Han Lun Xuan Zhu(«»,Annotation of Treatise on Febrile Diseases) is a representative work of Zang Yingzhan, a famous physician in Zhucheng of Shandong who was as famous as Huang Yuanyu during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.The book was not published, but has been preserved only in manuscripts, of which 5 copies are now preserved.By comparing the five manuscripts seen, it is found that the Zhuang Enze version is unique in the existing version of this book, exquisite and generous, beautifully copied, with important documentary value. Zhuang Enze adopts the theories of various schools, supplements prescriptions, analyze medical theory with his unique insights.The reason may be related to his family's practice of medicine for generations, its philosophy of loving reading, copying books, and collecting books, and also related to its protection of local and state documents and the dissemination of lost culture.

Abstract:It has always been considered that Zhenjiu Dacheng (Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) printed by ZHAO Wenbing is the earliest version. In comparative study, it is found that there are two versions in the Ming dynasty, one is the original, stored in the Library of China Academy of Sciences and another one is the revision, stored in the Library of Tianjin University of TCM, Zhejiang Provincial Library and the Library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The last item, Chengjiang (CV 24) in the Acupoint Indication of Conception Vessel in volume 7 is included in the revised edition, but not covered in the original one, which is the difference between the two versions. Both of the versions were in the Ming dynasty, rather than the block-printed one in the Qing dynasty.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Although earlier research has suggested that baseline prealbumin level is an independent predictor of outcome among dialysis patients, the prognostic importance of serial prealbumin levels is less clear. The present study had 3 objectives: first, to determine if prealbumin (a marker of visceral protein stores with a relatively short half-life) predicts subsequent albumin levels taken at least 1 month later; second, to examine the association between serial prealbumin levels and clinical outcome; and third, to examine the association between changes in prealbumin level and outcome. DESIGN The prognostic value of serial prealbumin levels was examined by linear regression analysis and Cox hazard models in an observational cohort study using a repeated measures design and time-dependent covariates. SETTING Patients were followed by a tertiary care center, receiving hemodialysis (HD; at either an in-center dialysis unit or one of several satellite units operated by the hospital) or home peritoneal dialysis (PD). PATIENTS A retrospective cohort was identified consisting of 268 incident and prevalent chronic HD and PD patients receiving dialysis from June 1998 to September 1999. MAIN OUTCOME The study examined the association between serial prealbumin measurements and future laboratory and clinical outcomes (albumin, hospitalization, and death). RESULTS Serial prealbumin values were independent predictors of future albumin levels among HD patients (P =.04), but not PD patients. Independent predictors of hospitalization included diabetes for PD patients (P =.0012) and advanced age for HD patients (P =.0008). Advanced age and diabetes were independent predictors of death for both HD (P =.0001 and P =.0368) and PD patients (P =.0014 and P =.0164). Serial prealbumin values, measured as time-dependent covariates, did not predict hospitalization or death. Further analyses examined the prognostic value of changes in prealbumin and albumin values as time-dependent covariates. The final multivariate analysis identified low baseline albumin level as an independent predictor of hospitalization among HD patients (P =.0282), whereas low baseline prealbumin was an independent predictor of death for HD patients (P =.0001). Interestingly, negative changes in serial prealbumin measurements were also independent predictors of death among HD patients (P =.0025). CONCLUSION Serial prealbumin measurements predict subsequent albumin values among HD patients. As well, low baseline prealbumin level is an independent predictor of adverse outcome among HD patients. Although repeated prealbumin measurements in and of themselves were of no added prognostic value, falling prealbumin values identified by repeated measurements were additional independent predictors of death. These results support the clinical utility of regular prealbumin monitoring among HD patients.

Abstract:Mycoplasma pneumoniae, formerly called the primary atypical pneumonia agent, is an important respiratory pathogen in man.' Before this agent had been identified as a mycoplasma, the immunofluorescence (IFL) technique was for several years the only practically useful method for the demonstration of antibodies to this microorganism.* At that time the antigen used in the IFL test consisted of frozen sections of bronchi from chick embryos infected with the agent. Later, when the organism could be cultivated on agar, it became possible to use colonies of M. pneumoniae transferred to glass slides as antigen in the IFL test.3 However, other less laborious techniques such as complement fixation (CF), indirect hemagglutination, and metabolic or tetrazolium reduction inhibition are now commonly used for the demonstration of serum antibodies to M. pneumniae.' For the investigation of M. pneumoniae antibodies in bronchial secretions, we chose the IFL technique since this method measures antibodies of all the three main immunoglobulin classes and permits the determination of the immunoglobulin class of the antibodies without previous fractionation of the specimens.
[A Japanese classic book on materia medica Ben Cao Quan]

Abstract:Ben Cao Quan is an ancient classic book on materia medica compiled by Goku Yoshida, a Japanese scholar in the Edo period (1603-1867). A total of 568 materia medica in 53 categories in Ben Cao Quan came from Ben Cao Gang Mu compiled by Li Shizhen in the Ming Dynasty. These materia medica were introduced with some of his own interpretations of Goku Yoshida. The main characteristics of Ben Cao Quan reflected as follows. It attached importance to the comparison of translation from Chinese into Japanese and selected those materia medica commonly used in Japan, in particular, from 'spicific explanation' (Ji Jie) and 'smell' (Qi Wei) in Ben Cao Gang Mu.It focused on application and integrated local practice, and interpreted the personal insights of Goku Yoshida.Goku Yoshida's personal understanding and perception of these material medica were shown in terms of their origin and quality, analysis of their properties and collection, interpretation of their identification and selection, their local names, their Japanese names, and review of the changes when these materia medica were introduced into Japan.The purpose of Ban Cao Quan was to attempt to help Japanese identify materia medica and distinguish quality and interpret materia medica with Japanese characteristics. The book is valuable literature for the research of the impact of Ben Cao Gang Mu on the development of materia medica in Japan.

Abstract:The compilation of medical bamboo slips, which are excavated from a Han dynasty tomb in Laoguanshan(Mount. Laoguan), has two manuscripts: 'Zhu Bing Ⅰ(cases study Ⅰ)'and 'Zhu Bing Ⅱ(cases study Ⅱ)'. 'Zhu Bing Ⅰ'mainly discussed the pathogenic factor "wind" and "wind diseases" . It also analyzed the features of pathogenic factor "wind" . It classified the "wind diseases" into 17 kinds from 4 point views, and documented the symptoms of 17 kinds of "wind disease" . It was first time that its most ideas were documented in traditional Chinese medicine literatures.

Abstract:Dou tai shi zhen jing (the acupuncture canon of Dou tai shi) was an ancient book of acupuncture and moxibustion of Yuan dynasty which had two kinds of transcript of Qing dynasty and the Republic of China. The transcript of Qing dynasty entitled "Mi chao yang shi jia chuan zhen jing tu" (The secret note of acupuncture canon picture of Yang's family heritage). The transcript of the Republic of China was copied together with Yu long ge, so entitled Yu long ge. By making texture research, the two kinds of transcripts were actually different circulating editions of Dou tai shi zhen jing, but the exact title was still uncertain. The author of this book was not Dou Han-qing himself. It should be arranged by Dou's successor and annotated by his descendants. The transcript of Qing dynasty consisted of text, annotation, variorum and headnote. Because Dou tai shi zhen jing was a single conclusion based on clinical practice of acupoint after Zhen quan zhen jing (the acupuncture canon of Zhen quan), so it had high documentary and practical values.
