Robust Three-Microphone Speech Source Localization Using Randomized Singular Value Decomposition

Abstract:Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is a fundamental technique in array signal processing due to its wide applications in beamforming, speech enhancement and many other assistive speech processing technologies. In this paper, we devise a novel DOA technique based on randomized singular value decomposition (RSVD) to improve the performance of non-uniform non-linear microphone arrays (NUNLA). The accurate and efficient singular value decomposition of large data matrices is computationally challenging, and randomization provides an effective tool for performing matrix approximation, therefore, the developed DOA estimation utilizes a modified dictionary-based RSVD method for localizing single speech sources under low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Unlike previous methods developed for uniform linear microphone arrays, the proposed approach with L-shaped three microphone setup has no 'left-right' ambiguity. We present the performance of our proposed method in comparison to other techniques. The demonstrated experiments shows at-least 20% performance improvement using simulated data and 25% performance improvement using real data when compared with similar DoA estimation techniques for NUNLA. The proposed method exploits frame-based online time delay of arrival (TDOA) measurements which facilitates the proposed algorithm to run on real-time devices. We also show an efficient real-time implementation of the proposed method on a Pixel 3 Android smartphone using its built-in three microphones for hearing aid applications.

Abstract:The low-frequency sound source localization is fundamentally restricted by the array aperture. The non-synchronous measurement (NSM) is a powerful method to achieve excellent performance in low-frequency acoustic localization by sequentially scanning the sound field. Nevertheless, the existing methods can only perform sound source localization at a frequency of above 800 Hz. An efficient acoustic localization method is proposed in this article for low-frequency sound source localization by moving the array at coprime positions (CPs) to perform the NSM and solving the corresponding inverse problem by an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm. First, the prototype array is moved at the CPs to perform the NSM, enlarging the aperture of the array for the first time. Second, the virtual array is constructed by the difference of the actual positions of the array element at each CP, expanding the synthetic aperture again. Third, the virtual signal propagation model is derived from the corresponding virtual signal to further increase spatial resolution by vectorizing the synthetic cross-spectral matrix of the NSM. Finally, the ADMM with the $L_{1}$ -norm regularization algorithm is derived and applied to solve the virtual signal propagation model, which is also compared with the interior-point algorithm in solving the virtual signal propagation model. To verify the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method, simulations and experiments with different sound sources at low frequencies and noise disturbances are performed in this article.
The design and implementation of a smartphone-based acoustic array system for DOA estimation

Abstract:Microphone array for high-quality audio recording has been realized by dedicated devices. But lack of portability and high cost prevent such system being widely adopted. Today's commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphones are relatively more convenient for audio recording. However, in order to estimate the target's direction of arrival (DOA), several asynchronous receivers (smartphones) must be precisely time synchronized. Nevertheless, the additional computational cost and errors caused by realizing time synchronization with traditional methods may lower the accuracy of DOA estimation and even make the DOA estimation failure. In this paper, we design and implement the Smartphone-based and DOA-estimation acoustic array system called SDOAs, in which the effective and straightforward RBS-based and Post-Facto Synchronization (RBS-PFS) mechanism with sample-counting technique is proposed to figure out the problem of time asynchronization. The real SDOAs is implemented on a test-bed using several android smartphones. The experiment demonstrates that our acoustic array system SDOAs can achieve high accuracy DOA estimation with Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm and the RMSE is lower than 2.7° when the range of degree is between 0° and 45°.
3D Multiple Sound Source Localization by Proposed T-Shaped Circular Distributed Microphone Arrays in Combination with GEVD and Adaptive GCC-PHAT/ML Algorithms

Abstract:Multiple simultaneous sound source localization (SSL) is one of the most important applications in the speech signal processing. The one-step algorithms with the advantage of low computational complexity (and low accuracy), and the two-step methods with high accuracy (and high computational complexity) are proposed for multiple SSL. In this article, a combination of one-step-based method based on the generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD), and a two-step-based method based on the adaptive generalized cross-correlation (GCC) by using the phase transform/maximum likelihood (PHAT/ML) filters along with a novel T-shaped circular distributed microphone array (TCDMA) is proposed for 3D multiple simultaneous SSL. In addition, the low computational complexity advantage of the GCC algorithm is considered in combination with the high accuracy of the GEVD method by using the distributed microphone array to eliminate spatial aliasing and thus obtain more appropriate information. The proposed T-shaped circular distributed microphone array-based adaptive GEVD and GCC-PHAT/ML algorithms (TCDMA-AGGPM) is compared with hierarchical grid refinement (HiGRID), temporal extension of multiple response model of sparse Bayesian learning with spherical harmonic (SH) extension (SH-TMSBL), sound field morphological component analysis (SF-MCA), and time-frequency mixture weight Bayesian nonparametric acoustical holography beamforming (TF-MW-BNP-AHB) methods based on the mean absolute estimation error (MAEE) criteria in noisy and reverberant environments on simulated and real data. The superiority of the proposed method is presented by showing the high accuracy and low computational complexity for 3D multiple simultaneous SSL.

Symphony: Localizing Multiple Acoustic Sources with a Single Microphone Array

Abstract:Sound recognition is an important and popular function of smart devices. The location of sound is basic information associated with the acoustic source. Apart from sound recognition, whether the acoustic sources can be localized largely affects the capability and quality of the smart device's interactive functions. In this work, we study the problem of concurrently localizing multiple acoustic sources with a smart device (e.g., a smart speaker like Amazon Alexa). The existing approaches either can only localize a single source, or require deploying a distributed network of microphone arrays to function. Our proposal called Symphony is the first approach to tackle the above problem with a single microphone array. The insight behind Symphony is that the geometric layout of microphones on the array determines the unique relationship among signals from the same source along the same arriving path, while the source's location determines the DoAs (direction-of-arrival) of signals along different arriving paths. Symphony therefore includes a geometry-based filtering module to distinguish signals from different sources along different paths and a coherence-based module to identify signals from the same source. We implement Symphony with different types of commercial off-the-shelf microphone arrays and evaluate its performance under different settings. The results show that Symphony has a median localization error of 0.694m, which is 68% less than that of the state-of-the-art approach.
Sound Source Direction Localization Scheme on Smart Phones with Dual Microphones

Abstract:This article introduces a smartphone-based sound source localization scheme that leverages the dual microphones of smartphones. It collects signals emitted by sound sources using the upper and lower microphones of phones, estimates the time delay difference between the signals arriving at the two microphones through double generalized cross-correlation, analyzes the angle of arrival of the sound, and determines the sound source direction based on the geometric relationship between the sound source and the microphones. To address the issue of signal symmetry from sound sources on both the left and right sides reaching the microphones, this article incorporates certain functionalities from virtual audio techniques. It applies virtual rotation to the previously calculated sound source angles, creating an illusion of sound source rotation to distinguish between left and right sound sources. The primary contribution of this article is the proposition of the feasibility of sound source localization through smartphones and the utilization of a sound virtual rotation method to mitigate the symmetry issue in smartphone microphone signal collection. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the algorithm proposed in this article.

Deep Learning Based Stage-wise Two-dimensional Speaker Localization with Large Ad-hoc Microphone Arrays

Abstract:While deep-learning-based speaker localization has shown advantages in challenging acoustic environments, it often yields only direction-of-arrival (DOA) cues rather than precise two-dimensional (2D) coordinates. To address this, we propose a novel deep-learning-based 2D speaker localization method leveraging ad-hoc microphone arrays, where an ad-hoc microphone array is composed of randomly distributed microphone nodes, each of which is equipped with a traditional array. Specifically, we first employ convolutional neural networks at each node to estimate speaker directions. Then, we integrate these DOA estimates using triangulation and clustering techniques to get 2D speaker locations. To further boost the estimation accuracy, we introduce a node selection algorithm that strategically filters the most reliable nodes. Extensive experiments on both simulated and real-world data demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms conventional methods. The proposed node selection further refines performance. Abstract:Indoor Sound Source Localization (ISSL) is under growing focus with the rapid development of smart IOT intelligence. The predominant approaches typically involve constructing large microphone (Mic) array systems or extracting multiple angles of arrival (AOAs). However, the performance of these solutions is often constrained by the physical size of the array. Besides, there has been limited focus on 3D localization with a single small-sized Mic array. In this paper, we propose HearLoc, an ISSL system that can locate 3D sources with a ten- $cm$ Mic array. We demonstrate that the localization ability and dimensional capability can be significantly enhanced by incorporating the time differences of arrival (TDOAs) between the LOS and ECHO signals from nearby reflective surfaces. Our approach involves a localization method that selectively sums the correlation powers at useful TDOAs induced by each location. We also design a data processing pipeline with interpolation, normalization and pruning techniques to improve system accuracy and efficiency. To further enhance scalability, we design an iterative algorithm for the ISSL problem with multiple sources and an array location calibration scheme. Experiments demonstrate that the HearLoc can effectively locate sound sources, exhibiting $2\times$ / $3.7\times$ improvements in accuracy for 2D and 3D localization, respectively, and a $4\times$ increase in efficiency compared to the existing AOA-based ISSL solutions.
Source Localization and Signal Extraction Using Spherical Microphone Arrays

Abstract:Source localization and extraction using spherical microphone arrays is presented in this paper. Both freefield and solid spherical arrays are examined. To minimize the basis mismatch problem in signal extraction, source localization is executed first using two beamforming methods, delay and sum (DAS) and minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR). The beamformers are formulated in both the spatial domain and the modal domain. After source localization, Tikhonov regularization (TIKR) and compressive sensing (CS) are used to extract the source amplitude signals. Simulations and experiments are conducted for spherical arrays of radius 5 cm with 32 microphones mounted on the vertices and faces of an icosahedron. The results demonstrate better localization performance of the spatial beamformer that the modal beamformer. In addition, the source speech signals are extracted by using the proposed arrays with superior quality.

Abstract:While sound source localization (SSL) using a spherical microphone array system can be applied to obtain visual beam patterns of source distribution maps in a range of omnidirectional acoustic applications, the present challenges of the spherical measurement system on the valid frequency ranges and the spatial distortion as well as the grid-related limitations of data-driven SSL approaches raise the need to develop an appropriate method. Imbued by these challenges, this study proposes a deep learning (DL) approach to achieve the high-resolution performance of localizing multiple sound sources tailored for omnidirectional acoustic applications. First, we present a spherical target map representation that can panoramically pinpoint the position and strength information of multiple sound sources without any grid-related constraints. Then, a dual-branched spherical convolutional autoencoder is proposed to obtain high-resolution localization results from the conventional spherical beamforming maps while incorporating frequency-variant and distortion-invariant strategies to address the inherent challenges. We quantitatively and qualitatively assess our proposed method's localization capability for multiple sound sources and validate that the proposed method can achieve far more precise and computationally efficient results than the existing approaches. By extension, we newly present the experimental setup that can create omnidirectional acoustic scenarios for the multiple SSL. By evaluating our proposed method in this experimental setup, we demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method with the experimental data. Our study delivers the proposed approach's potential of being utilized in various SSL applications.

Abstract:Compact acoustic sensor arrays are nowadays popular devices for audio sensing due to minimum size and lightness characteristics that make it attractive for numerous applications such as human-computer interaction, acoustic scene analysis, teleconferencing systems, hearing aid, robotics, and bioacoustics. A compact array has a small inter-microphone distance that allows to reduce the spatial aliasing effect in the acoustic source localization problem, degrading however the spatial resolution. Thus, as a consequence, the capability of this class of sensors in the localization of multiple acoustic sources is rather limited. In this paper, we present an iterative diagonal unloading (IDU) beamforming suitable for the direction of arrivals (DOAs) estimation of concurrent multiple sources using compact microphone arrays. The method is based on the identification of the dominant signal, which corresponds to the largest peak in the pseudo-spectrum (i.e., the acoustic response map) computed by the DU beamformer, and on an iterative cancellation of the dominant signal from the covariance matrix to compute a new spatial pseudo-spectrum. All the pseudo-spectrum responses computed with the iterative procedure are summed to obtain a high resolution map of the acoustic scene. We analyze the DOAs estimation performance using compact uniform linear arrays (ULAs) and spherical microphone arrays (SMAs) with simulations and real acoustic data. The results show that the proposed IDU beamforming increases the spatial resolution allowing an effective localization of concurrent multiple sources.

Dual-Microphone Source Location Method in 2-D Space.

Abstract:Array based source location attracts a growing interest nowadays, which is frequently used in videoconference, hearing aids and hands free telephone systems to detect a speaker's position. Time delay estimation (TDE) based dual-step source location is assumed to be classical method in this field. Recently, a new technique is developed based on interaural level difference (ILD) method, which determines the source position by the energy ratio from microphone pairs. However, all these localization techniques need at least three sensors to obtain a 2D source locus. In this work, we combine the former two techniques, i.e., ILD and TDE based techniques, to present a novel localization approach by an array of only two microphones, and further provide its closed form solution. Our final simulation confirms that such method, which is thought to be more suitable for the equipments with small size, can achieve a good result under normal conditions
Asynchronous Microphone Array Calibration using Hybrid TDOA Information

Abstract:Asynchronous microphone array calibration is a prerequisite for many audition robot applications. A popular solution to the above calibration problem is the batch form of Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM), using the time difference of arrival measurements between two microphones (TDOA-M), and the robot (which serves as a moving sound source during calibration) odometry information. In this paper, we introduce a new form of measurement for microphone array calibration, i.e. the time difference of arrival between adjacent sound events (TDOA-S) with respect to the microphone channels. We propose to use TDOA-S and TDOA-M, called hybrid TDOA, together with odometry measurements for bath SLAM-based calibration of asynchronous microphone arrays. Extensive simulation and real-world experiments show that our method is more independent of microphone number, less sensitive to initial values (when using off-the-shelf algorithms such as Gauss-Newton iterations), and has better calibration accuracy and robustness under various TDOA noises. Simulation results also demonstrate that our method has a lower Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for microphone parameters. Abstract:This article proposes a variational Bayesian (VB) inference based on the nonsynchronous array measurement (NAM) (VB-NAM) method in order to obtain the fast and robust localization of low-frequency acoustic sources. To enlarge the aperture size compared with the prototype array, the NAM is performed to measure the acoustic pressures with low-frequency based on the forward power propagation model. The implementation of the NAM can be reformulated into a cross-spectral matrix (CSM) completion problem. Then, to solve the inverse problem of the NAM power propagation model, the VB inference based on the Student-t priors and Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence optimization is proposed. The advantages of the proposed VB-NAM benefit from the optimization of matrix inversion and adaptive estimation of regularization parameters. The contribution of the adaptive parameter evaluation is to reduce the impact of multiple interferences (such as additive noise and the matrix completion error) in NAM. Finally, both simulations at 800 Hz and experimental results at 1000 Hz are presented to show the validation of the proposed VB-NAM method, even under the anisotropic Gaussian noise conditions. Algorithm performance and iteration process are analyzed to demonstrate the efficiency and robustness.
Localization and Separation of Acoustic Sources by Using a 2.5-Dimensional Circular Microphone Array

Abstract:Circular microphone arrays (CMAs) are sufficient in many immersive audio applications because azimuthal angles of sources are considered more important than the elevation angles in those occasions. However, the fact that CMAs do not resolve the elevation angle well can be a limitation for some applications which involves three-dimensional sound images. This paper proposes a 2.5-dimensional (2.5-D) CMA comprised of a CMA and a vertical logarithmic-spacing linear array (LLA) on the top. In the localization stage, two delay-and-sum beamformers are applied to the CMA and the LLA, respectively. The direction of arrival (DOA) is estimated from the product of two array output signals. In the separation stage, Tikhonov regularization and convex optimization are employed to extract the source amplitudes on the basis of the estimated DOA. The extracted signals from two arrays are further processed by the normalized least-mean-square algorithm with the internal iteration to yield the source signal with improved quality. To validate the 2.5-D CMA experimentally, a three-dimensionally printed circular array comprised of a 24-element CMA and an eight-element LLA is constructed. Objective perceptual evaluation of speech quality test and a subjective listening test are also undertaken.
Study of speaker localization with binaural microphone array incorporating auditory filters and lateral angle estimation

Abstract:Speaker localization for binaural microphone arrays has been widely studied for applications such as speech communication, video conferencing, and robot audition. Many methods developed for this task, including the direct path dominance (DPD) test, share common stages in their processing, which include transformation using the short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and a direction of arrival (DOA) search that is based on the head related transfer function (HRTF) set. In this paper, alternatives to these processing stages, motivated by human hearing, are proposed. These include incorporating an auditory filter bank to replace the STFT, and a new DOA search based on transformed HRTF as steering vectors. A simulation study and an experimental study are conducted to validate the proposed alternatives, and both are applied to two binaural DOA estimation methods; the results show that the proposed method compares favorably with current methods.

Abstract:Approximately 6.2% of the world's population (466 million people) suffer from disabling hearing impairment [1]. Hearing impairment impacts negatively on one's education, financial success [2][3], cognitive development in childhood [4], including increased risk of dementia in older adulthood [5]. Lack of or reduced social interaction due to hearing impairment affects creating or maintaining healthy relationships at home, school and work [5]. Hence, hearing impairment genuinely affects the overall quality of life and wellbeing. The cocktail party effect, which is a healthy hearing individual's ability to understand one voice in a cacophony of other voices or sounds, is an important ability lacking in people with hearing impairment. This inability results in difficulties with simple daily activities such as partaking in group discussions or conversing in noisy restaurants [6]. This smart hearing aid aims to provide much-needed assistance with understanding speech in noisy environments. For example, if a person wants to partake in a group discussion, he/she needs to place the microphone array based unit on a flat surface in front of him/her, such as a table. When conversations take place, the microphone array will capture and process sound from all directions, intelligently prioritise and provide the lead speaker's voice by suppressing unwanted noises, including speeches of other people. This device selects and alternates voices between speakers automatically using voice algorithms. Additionally, the user has the option of further fine-tuning the acoustic parameters as needed through a smartphone interface. This paper describes the development and functions of this new Smart Hearing Aid.
Lightweight and Optimized Sound Source Localization and Tracking Methods for Open and Closed Microphone Array Configurations

Abstract:Human-robot interaction in natural settings requires filtering out the different sources of sounds from the environment. Such ability usually involves the use of microphone arrays to localize, track and separate sound sources online. Multi-microphone signal processing techniques can improve robustness to noise but the processing cost increases with the number of microphones used, limiting response time and widespread use on different types of mobile robots. Since sound source localization methods are the most expensive in terms of computing resources as they involve scanning a large 3D space, minimizing the amount of computations required would facilitate their implementation and use on robots. The robot's shape also brings constraints on the microphone array geometry and configurations. In addition, sound source localization methods usually return noisy features that need to be smoothed and filtered by tracking the sound sources. This paper presents a novel sound source localization method, called SRP-PHAT-HSDA, that scans space with coarse and fine resolution grids to reduce the number of memory lookups. A microphone directivity model is used to reduce the number of directions to scan and ignore non significant pairs of microphones. A configuration method is also introduced to automatically set parameters that are normally empirically tuned according to the shape of the microphone array. For sound source tracking, this paper presents a modified 3D Kalman (M3K) method capable of simultaneously tracking in 3D the directions of sound sources. Using a 16-microphone array and low cost hardware, results show that SRP-PHAT-HSDA and M3K perform at least as well as other sound source localization and tracking methods while using up to 4 and 30 times less computing resources respectively.

Abstract:When the background noise is large or the sound source is far away from the microphone array, the localization accuracy of target sound sources will decrease dramatically. In order to solve this problem, a localization method of multi-aperture acoustic array based on time difference of arrival(TDOA) is proposed. The multi-aperture acoustic array is constructed by two small sub microphone arrays, which is supposed to surpass the performance of the equivalent large array composed of all microphones. The positions of the target sound source in two local coordinates are separately estimated by the two sub microphone arrays based on the generalized trust-region sub-problem in the modified polar representation (GTRS-MPR) method. Through the space coordinate transformation, the estimated two positions of the target sound source in the two local coordinates can be transferred into one global coordinate. To optimize the final estimated position of the target sound source by the multi-aperture acoustic array, two spatial lines are formed between the reference microphones of the two sub-arrays and the estimated two sources' positions in the global coordinate, and a search algorithm of shortest distance point based on the least-square method is proposed to fuse the localization results of the two sub-arrays. A simulation and an experimental platform are set up to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has higher localization accuracy compared with the existing methods. Especially, the accuracy of range estimation is greatly improved, which will be more suitable for the far-field sound source localization.
