Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Abstract:TiO2 loaded on the honeycomb ceramic was tentatively introduced into dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in a radial-flow configuration, for plasma-induced photocatalytic degradation of a model organic pollutant thiamethoxam in water. The solution was made to flow as a film over the surface of the honeycomb ceramic, whose hydrophilic force kept the water surface undisturbed by the electrical discharge. This characteristic enabled a reduction of the discharge gap. The results indicated that rate constant of thiamethoxam degradation, energy utilization efficiency of thiamethoxam removal and TOC removal were significantly enhanced due to the synergy effect between the plasma discharge and the TiO2 photocatalysis. The system could adapt to a wide range of liquid conductivity. The TiO2 film was calcined at 500 degrees C and the crystal structure of the TiO2 showed no change after use. Higher concentration of H2O2 and[GRAPHICS]were obtained.

Abstract:An inorganic molecular imprinted polymer (IMIP) coated photocatalyst for photodegradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was synthesized by coating a layer of molecular imprinted silica/alumina on the surface of TiO2nanoparticles with DEP as the template. The characterization with HR-TEM, XRD, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopic analysis indicated that the new catalyst was a composite of the TiO2 particle core and a shell layer of Al3+-doped silica with thickness of about 5 nm. The 27Al MAS NMR measurements revealed that the IMIP layer consisted of framework tetrahedrally coordinated aluminium and non-framework octa-coordinated aluminium species, both of which function as the hot spots for the adsorption of target molecules on the catalyst during photocatalysis. It was found that the IMIP layer provided the photocatalyst with molecular recognition ability, leading to selective adsorption and rapid mineralization of the target pollutant from its low level solution (2 mg L−1) in the presence of other high level non-target pollutants, such as phenol (50 mg L−1). Unlike the neat TiO2 photocatalyst (Degussa P25), the use of the IMIP-coated TiO2 photocatalyst almost eliminated the generation of toxic aromatic byproducts. Moreover, the new photocatalyst was totally constructed by inorganic compounds, being resistant to photochemical attack and showing favorable lifetime during the photocatalysis.

Abstract:A novel ferrate(VI)/titanium dioxide/ultraviolet [Fe(VI)/TiO2/UV] system was successfully established for the photocatalytic oxidation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP). This system demonstrated a higher removal efficiency of DMP (95.2%) than the conventional TiO2/UV and Fe(VI) alone systems (51.8% and 23.5%, respectively) and produced obvious synergistic effects. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a three level, three independent variables design, was conducted through Design Expert 8.0.6 program, and a second-order polynomial model (R2 = 0.998) was developed to quantitatively describe the photocatalysis of TiO2 combined with Fe(VI) oxidation under ultraviolet irradiation. The fresh TiO2 and photochemical reacted Fe(VI)/TiO2 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and element dispersive spectrum (EDS), which indicated that Fe(VI) was imprinted into the TiO2, and the surface adsorbed Fe-O-(organic) materials inhibited DMP degradation. This photocatalytic oxidant showed high activity and stability after nine cycles without loss of its effectiveness (counting from the second cycle). The intermediates/products of DMP were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The proposed pathway for DMP degradation involved one electron transfer of hydroxyl radical and breaking of the ester bond and benzene ring. The mineralization efficiencies of DMP in actual industrial wastewater and simulated water were 87.1% and 95.2%, respectively, suggesting practical field applications. A ecotoxicity test (17.3% inhibition on bioluminescence) in treating actual industrial wastewater containing DMP implied that the proposed Fe(VI)/TiO2/UV had a potential for industrial water treatment.

Abstract:A novel carbon black modified nano-TiO2 film photocatalyst (CB-TiO2) was prepared by a sol–gel method and used for degrading and mineralizing dibutyl phthalate. The film was characterized by XRD, SEM, and DRS techniques. Carbon black modification could make TiO2 film more pores, looser structure, smaller crystal sizes and longer excitation wavelength. The photocatalytic activity of the CB-TiO2 films was 1.4 times higher than that of TiO2 films in degrading dibutyl phthalate. The results showed that ozone concentrations had an important effect on degradation and mineralization of dibutyl phthalate. The combined photocatalysis with UV irradiation and ozonation (TiO2/UV/O3) process considerably improved mineralization and degradation of dibutyl phthalate compared to combined photocatalysis with UV irradiation (TiO2/UV) process, combined ozonation with UV irradiation (UV/O3) process and ozonation alone (O3) process. Dibutyl phthalate can be quickly mineralized in TiO2/UV/O3 and UV/O3, its mineralization followed pseudo-zero-order kinetics dependent upon ozone concentration and indicated its concentration did not affect the kinetics during TiO2/UV, UV/O3 and TiO2/UV/O3 processes. The kinetic study showed the mineralization rate constants of dibutyl phthalate with TiO2/UV/O3 are 1.2–1.8 times higher than that of UV/O3 with the same ozone concentration and 3.5 times higher than that of TiO2/UV.

Abstract:The crystal engineering of metal oxide supports aims to enhance the performance of precious metal catalysts in semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) as one of the representative SVOCs in indoor environments, has become a research hotspot in recent years. For the catalytic oxidation of DEHP, Pt/TiO2 catalysts were prepared on supports of TiO2 with different crystalline phases (mixed phase (P25), anatase, and rutile). P25 exhibits a higher PtOx content due to its unique mixed crystalline phase, giving the best catalytic performance of the synthesized catalyst through light, thermal and photothermal catalytic experiments. The degradation of DEHP is optimized by a combination of photocatalysis and thermal catalysis. The intermediates and degradation pathways were analyzed through GC-MS and other characterization methods, and the possible degradation pathways were schematically studied. This work provides the possibility to rationalize the design of photothermal catalysts for SVOC removal.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an effective photocatalyst for organic removal. However, its efficacy is hampered by the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. This paper presented an eco-friendly, synthetic lanthanum (La)/TiO2 supported on lithium silicon powder (L) to significantly improve photocatalysis. The results showed that 74.4% dimethyl phthalate (DMP) removal was achieved in the ultraviolet (UV)-La-TiO2/L (LTL1) system, which was considerably higher than UV-TiO2/L (TL) (60.1%) and UV-L (18.3%). The enhanced LTL1 photocatalysis was based on the synergic effect between TiO2 and La with L matrix. The photocatalysis efficiency was further improved by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), while the DMP removal rate reached 100% in the UV-LTL1-H2O2 system. The DMP activation mechanisms and degradation pathways in the UV-LTL1-H2O2 system were carefully examined, revealing that increased hydroxyl free radical (OH•) and superoxide ion radicals (O2−•) were pivotal to the higher degradation rate. Overall, the findings suggested that LTL1 showed considerable application promise for the low-cost and eco-friendly organic removal from water.

Activated Sludge-Mediated Biodegradation of Dimethyl Phthalate under Fermentative Conditions.

Abstract:The biodegradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) was investigated under fermentative conditions in this study. The nature of the intermediate compounds and the extent of mineralization were probed using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methods. The fermentative bacteria were able to biodegrade the DMP under anaerobic conditions, with the biodegradation rate of 0.36 mg DMP/(L·h). The results demonstrated that the DMP degradation under fermentative conditions followed the modifed Gompertz model with the correlation coefficient of 0.99. Monomethyl phthalate (MMP) and phthalic acid (PA) were detected as the intermediates of DMP biodegradation. During the experiment, MMP was rapidly produced and removed; however, PA accumulated as the biodegradation was slower throughout the course of the experiment. The CODCr concentration decreased from 245.06 to 72.01 mg/L after the experimental operation of 20 d. The volume of methane produced was 3.65 ml over a period of 20 d and the amount of methane recovered corresponded to 40.2% of the stoichiometric value. The CODCr variation and methane production showed that the DMP could not be completely mineralized under the fermentative conditions, which implied that the fermentative bacteria were not able to biodegrade DMP entirely.
Electrochemical oxidation of diethyl phthalate at two dimensional graphite sheet electrodes: optimization and analysis of degradation in water with HRMS

Abstract:Concentration of phthalates in the environment has been steadily increasing due to their high utilization rate and the inability of conventional wastewater and water treatment to remove them. Electrochemical oxidation at Boron doped diamond (BDD) was effective for phthalate degradation but costly and unaffordable in many situations. Hence, we carried out the electrochemical oxidation of Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) at two dimensional graphite electrodes as a low cost alternative to oxidation at BDD electrodes. Optimization studies found that high concentrations of DEP (56–112 mg L −1 ) can be effectively removed from water with acidic pH (pH 3), 60 mA cm −2 current density, 81 cm 2 anode surface area and 10 mmol sodium sulfate with 60 min treatment time. At 56 mg L −1 DEP concentration, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal were 92.5 and 70%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies were conducted to find out whether any adsorption or electrosorption had taken place at the electrode surface. High performance liquid chromatography-photo diode array (HPLC–PDA) analysis found that 97.3% of 84 mg L −1 DEP got oxidized or degraded. High resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) studies utilizing Ultra performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-ToF–MS) were conducted for finding the degradation byproducts and possible degradation pathway was proposed with the degradation mechanism. The major byproducts were dimethyl phthalate, phthalic acid, phthalic anhydride and phenol.

Abstract:Plasticisers, such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP), are contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) that are toxic to living things and the environment. Unlike hydrophilic pollutants, DBP shows the characteristics of hydrophilic and hydrophobic nature which makes its degradation or removal difficult using conventional treatment technologies. The current study explored the potential of photocatalysis followed by electrocatalytic oxidation (PC + EC) using vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) and carbon-coated titanium (C/Ti) anode for the removal of 75 mg L −1 DBP from water. The structural stability and changes in the functional groups after treatment of the catalyst were determined using powder XRD and FTIR studies that found the catalyst structure to be stable. Optimization studies showed that UV-A (315–400 nm) irradiation source, 112 mA cm −2 current density, 50 mg L −1 catalyst dosage, 360 min PC, 210 min EC at pH 3 and 20 mM sodium sulphate managed to degrade 99.5% of DBP with 97% COD and 87.7% TOC removal. Compared to electrocatalytic oxidation (EC), PC + EC showed 40% higher TOC removal. Reusability studies found the reduction of 45% for COD removal after four treatment cycles with V 2 O 5 , while the anode material showed no considerable decrease in its degradation efficiency. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) studies established that complete degradation was preceded by the oxidation of DBP to phthalic anhydride and phthalic acid responsible for the increase in TOC during the initial treatment period. Overall, this study lays out insights for the application of photo-electrocatlytic oxidation for the removal of ubiquitous poorly soluble water pollutants such as phthalates.

Solar reclamation of wastewater effluent polluted with bisphenols, phthalates and parabens by photocatalytic treatment with TiO2/Na2S2O8 at pilot plant scale

Abstract:Investigations of anthropogenic contaminants in fresh- and wastewater have shown a wide variety of undesirable organic compounds such as Endocrine Disruptors (EDs). As a result, wastewater treatments using innovative technologies to remove those organic compounds are required. In this paper, the photodegradation of six EDs in wastewater at pilot plant scale is reported. The EDs were bisphenol A, bisphenol B, diamyl phthalate, butyl benzylphthalate, methylparaben and ethylparaben. Commercial TiO2 nanopowders (P25, Alfa Aesar and Kronos vlp 7000) were used as photocatalysts. The operating variables (type and loading catalyst, effect of electron acceptor and pH) were previously optimized under laboratory conditions. The results show that the use of TiO2 alongside an electron acceptor like Na2S2O8 strongly enhances the degradation rate of the studied compounds compared with photolytic tests, especially P25. The oxidation rates of the EDs at pilot plant scale were calculated following the disappearance of the target compound as a function of fluence (H). The ED degradation followed a pseudo-first order kinetics in all cases. In our experimental conditions, the half-fluence (H50) varied from 79 to 173 J cm-2 (photolytic test), 10-117 J cm-2 (TiO2 vlp 7000) and 3-58 J cm-2 (TiO2 P25), for bisphenol B and butyl benzylphthalate, respectively. It is concluded that solar photocatalysis using the tandem TiO2/Na2S2O8 can be considered as an environmental-friendly tool for water detoxification and a sustainable technology for environmental remediation, especially in the Mediterranean Basin, where many places receive more than 3000 h of sunshine per year. Although the cost depends on the nature of the pollutant, the treatment cost was estimate to be about 150 € m-3 for photocatalytic treatment with TiO2 P25.

Abstract:A series of porous polyoxotungstate/titania nanocomposites (PW(12)/TiO(2)) with particle size lower than 10nm and BET surface area of ca. 200 m(2)g(-1) was prepared by sol-gel chemistry combined with solvothermal treatment. The composites were successfully applied to the degradation of aqueous phthalate esters (PAEs) including di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) under the simulated sunlight irradiation (lambda=320-680 nm) for the first time, and the conversion of DBP, DEP, and DMP reached to 98%, 84%, and 80%, respectively, after the simulated sunlight irradiation the suspension including PAE (5 mg L(-1), 100 mL) and PW(12)/TiO(2)-19.8 (100 mg) for 90 min. In addition, nearly total mineralization of DBP and DEP was realized by further increasing light irradiation time to 12h. Based on the intermediates identified in the reaction system, the photocatalytic degradation pathway of PAEs was put forward.
Highly efficient removal mechanism of dimethyl phthalate over an economical 3D {001}TiO2/Ti photoelectrode with enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity and long service life

Abstract:Constructing highly efficient and economical photoelectrodes for dimethyl phthalate (DMP) degradation had been regarded as an encouraging strategy on environmental remediation. The 3D {001}TiO2/Ti photoelectrode was prepared via in situ growth of TiO2 microspheres with near 100% {001} facets on Ti mesh, conducive to promoted active site supply and pohotogenerated charge separation. Compared with anatase TiO2/Ti, the DMP degradation efficiency over 3D {001}TiO2/Ti (near 100%) improved by 8.8 times, and its TOC removal achieved 89.4%. The 3D {001}TiO2/Ti demonstrated outstanding stability with removal rate of 97.7% even after eight cycles. The effects of various influence factors such as applied bias and coexisting ions on DMP degradation were studied for practical applications. A referable mineralization mechanism, including three possible degradation pathways of DMP, was put forward as well based on 4 kinds of new-discovered compounds.

Abstract:This study compares the degradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) by the electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) process with three different carbon-based cathodes, namely, carbon-polytetrafluorethylene (carbon-PTFE), carbon felt, and reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC). Results show that the three cathodes had different electrocatalytic activity for converting sparged O2 to H2O2, which increased in order of carbon felt, RVC, and carbon-PTFE. The in-situ generated H2O2 then reacts with sparged O3 to yield OH, which can in turn oxidize ozone-refractory DEP toward complete mineralization. In general, satisfactory total organic carbon removal yields (76.4-91.8%) could be obtained after 60min of the E-peroxone treatment with the three carbon-based cathodes, and the highest yield was obtained with the carbon-PTFE cathode due to its highest activity for H2O2 generation. In addition, the carbon-PTFE and carbon felt cathodes exhibited excellent stability over six cycles of the E-peroxone treatment of DEP solutions. Based on the intermediates (e.g., monoethyl phthalate, phthalic acid, phenolics, and carboxylic acids) identified by HPLC-UV, plausible reaction pathways were proposed for DEP mineralization by the E-peroxone process. The results of this study indicate that carbon-based cathodes generally have good electrocatalytic activity and stability for application in extended E-peroxone operations to effectively remove phthalates from water.

Abstract:To investigate the photodegradation process of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) in the ultraviolet light (UV)-H2O2 system, mass spectrometer was used to identify degradation products and further more, to speculate the possible mechanisms of degradation process. Experimental results showed that the degradation efficiency of 10 mg x L(-1) DMP reached 92.3% in 90 minutes in the UV-H2O2 system, and the more H2O2 was added, the faster DMP decomposed. The pH of DMP solution decreased from the initial 6.5 to 4.98, because of the generating of organic phenolic acids and small acid molecules generated by the degradation of DMP. By the GC/MS as well as LC/MS analysis, degradation products of the DMP in the UV-H2O2 system were thought to comprise six categories, from which we could infer that hydrolysis occurs simultaneously on the two side chains of the DMP, generating phthalic acid that can quickly change to the more stable terephthalic acid. In addition, DMP could also occur benzene ring replacement as well as the ring condensed of the side chains. Finally, by the role of *OH, DMP and its aromatic intermediates occurred ring-opening reaction, and benzene ring was destroyed and generated organic acids of small molecular, which was further mineralized to CO2 and water.

Abstract:A comparative analysis of photocatalytic efficiency has been carried out with both TiO2 P25 and a home-made catalyst at a solar radiation pilot plant constituted by Compound Parabolic Collector (CPC) systems. The effect of the chemical nature of three different substrates (phenol, dichloroacetic acid and pyrimethanil) and the impact of inorganic ions in natural waters, on their final photo-efficiencies was also analyzed. Subsequently, this solar photocatalytic process was applied to the photodegradation of a mixture of emerging contaminants considering the separation and recovery of catalysts by sedimentation. Although TiO2 P25 showed better results during phenol and dichloroacetic acid photodegradation, both photocatalysts presented similar photo-efficiencies in pyrimethanil mineralization and, specially, in the treatment of emerging pollutants. The presence of high concentrations of inorganic ions in natural waters constitutes a limiting factor for solar photocatalytic activity, but this process successfully photodegraded the mixture of micropollutants (carbamazepine, ibuprofen, sulfamethoxazole, ofloxacin, flumequine) in natural water matrix using both TiO2 catalysts, at very short irradiation times (t30w<35min). Therefore, solar assisted heterogeneous photocatalysis represents a very efficient, promising and competitive AOP to remove emerging contaminants like the pharmaceutical micropollutants studied here and frequently detected in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants.

Abstract:Benzophenone-3 (BP3) is one of the most used UV filters. Its disruptive effect on the endocrine system of different living beings has been demonstrated by several research groups. Present work addresses on a photocatalytic degradation of BP3 using particles of titanium dioxide in aqueous solutions considering the effect of operating parameters such as pH, catalyst and pollutant initial concentrations, and the presence of hydrogen peroxide, acetonitrile and isopropanol in the solution. In this way, a face centered, central composite design was carried out for the identification of significant factors or interactions that allow the determination of the conditions under which the pollutant suffers the highest rates of degradation. A solution initial pH of 9.0, a TiO2 concentration of 1.184 g L(-1) and an H2O2 concentration of 128.069 mg L(-1) were established as the optimal conditions for the substrate removal. In aqueous solutions and low concentrations of the pollutant (<2 mg L(-1)) photocatalytic degradation followed a pseudo-first order kinetics. After 300 min of treatment, ∼67% of the dissolved organic carbon was removed, which together with a reduction in toxicity and an increase in biodegradability confirmed that photocatalysis with TiO2 is a potential method to remove BP3 from water. Additionally, tests using acetonitrile as solvent and isopropanol as hydroxyl radical (OH(.)) scavenger suggested that, OH(.) was the main agent responsible of substrate degradation. Finally, ten process by-products were identified and a degradation route was proposed.

Abstract:AIM To investigate the attitudes towards and use of rubber dam by Irish general dental practitioners. METHODOLOGY A pre-piloted questionnaire was distributed amongst a group of 600 dentists randomly selected from the Irish Register of Dentists. Replies from dentists working in specialist practice or the hospital dental service were excluded. Dentists were surveyed in relation to their use of rubber dam during a variety of operative and root canal treatments, as well as their attitudes to the use of rubber dam in dental practice. RESULTS A total of 300 replies were considered from a total of 324 that were received. Seventy-seven per cent of respondents (n=231) worked in general dental practice and 23% (n=69) worked in the Irish Health Board/Community Dental Service. Rubber dam was 'never' used by 77% of respondents (n=228) when placing amalgam restorations in posterior teeth, 52% (n=147) when placing composite restorations in posterior teeth, and 59% (n=177) when placing composite restorations in anterior teeth. Rubber dam was 'never' used by 39% of respondents (n=114) when performing root canal treatment on anterior teeth; 32% (n = 84) when performing root canal treatment on premolar teeth; and 26% (n=51) when performing root canal treatment on molar teeth. Fifty-seven per cent (n=171) considered rubber dam 'cumbersome and difficult to apply', and 41% (n=123) considered throat pack 'as good a prevention against inhalation of endodontic instruments as rubber dam'. CONCLUSIONS Whilst rubber dam is used more frequently for root canal treatment than operative treatment, its use is limited. This presents quality issues, as well as medico-legal and safety concerns for both the profession and patients.
