Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF) with fine pore structures, ultra-high porosity and large specific surface area can provide more water transport channels while achieving precise sieving of different sizes of ions, which is a promising material for high efficiency desalination. However, particle agglomeration, interface incompatibilities and interface defects severely restrict the performance of MOF-based membranes. It is still a challenge to construct MOF-based desalination membranes with both high water permeability and high ion sieving. Herein, the UiO-66-NH 2 based nanofiltration membrane was fabricated by in-situ growth of UiO-66-NH 2 on Nylon membrane and composed with polyamide (PA) layer by interfacial polymerization (IP). With 12 h solvothermal reaction, the UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles are found uniformly loaded on the Nylon substrate. Therefore, the water molecule transport channels provided by UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles reduce the transport resistance, which can improve the water permeability. More importantly, UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles are found to be involved in the IP process, which can reduce the interfacial defects and thus enhance the bonding force between the PA layer and base film. The synergistic effect of the UiO-66-NH 2 and PA layer improves the nanofiltration performance of the membrane with rejection rate of 92.97% for Na 2 SO 4 and the pure water permeance (PWP) of 11.55 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 . The N-UN12@PA membrane also has excellent antifouling performance (flux recovery ratio (FRR) = 95.86%, reversible fouling ratio (Rr) = 33.93%, irreversible fouling ratio (Rir) = 4.14%). Unlike the mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) and polycrystalline MOF membrane, this strategy provides a promising method to prepare high-performance nanofiltration membrane for desalination.

Abstract:Highly cation permselective metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are desirable for the extraction of valuable metal cations. However, fabrication of defect-free and stable permselective MOF membranes is technically challenging, owing to their arduous self-assembly and poor water resistance, respectively. A simple and readily scalable method has been developed for the controlled in situ smart growth of UiO-66-NH2 into leaf-like nanostructures with tunable density of the leaves and the surface layer thickness. The self-assembly approach reproducibly fabricates seamless, ultrathin (<500 nm) UiO-66-NH2 membranes at the surface of anodic aluminum oxide. The membranes contain nanosized interstices among the MOF leaves, which enable maximum admission of ions within the membrane, and angstrom-sized inherent pores in every single UiO-66-NH2 crystal, which efficiently regulate the cation permselectivity. Consequently, the highest ever reported cation separations (Na+/Mg2+>200 and Li+/Mg2+>60) and excellent membrane stability during five sequential electrodialysis cycles are achieved. These characteristics position the fabricated MOF membranes as potential candidates for efficient extraction of pure lithium and sodium ions from salt lakes and seawater, respectively.
Custom-tailoring metal-organic framework in thin-film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane with enhanced internal polarity and amplified surface crosslinking for elevated separation property

Abstract:A polyamide (PA) thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane embedded with post-synthetically functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) nanofillers of imidazole-2-carbaldehyde (ICA) decorated UiO-66-NH2 nanofillers (ICA_d_UiO-66-NH2) was developed using the interfacial polymerization method. The ICA_d_UiO-66-NH2 nanofiller couples a surface water-capturing ICA decoration, facilitating the rapid transport of water molecules owing to the enhanced internal polarity, while achieving an amplified crosslinking between the terminal amine groups of ICA and trimesoyl chloride, enabling the perfect incorporation of MOF nanofillers within the PA matrix. The resultant ICA_d_UiO-66-NH2@PA TFN membrane with elevated separation property performed comparably high water permeance of 9.4 l m−2 h−1 bar−1 (achieving a nearly 2-fold increase from the initial value of the thin-film composite membrane), and a favorable rejection ratio of 97.4% (Na2SO4). Owing to the unique hierarchical surface microstructure embedded with the intrinsically hydrophilic ICA_d_UiO-66-NH2 nanofillers, the newly-developed TFN membrane exhibited superior antifouling properties. Furthermore, the ICA_d_UiO-66-NH2@PA TFN membrane also retained excellent reusability and durability without significant compromise even after long-term salt, and acid/alkali treatments. Overall, this work provides an insight into the embedding of different functionalized nanofillers inside TFN membranes with elevated separation properties.

Abstract:Owing to the rich porosity and uniform pore size, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer substantial advantages over other materials for the precise and fast membrane separation. However, achieving ultrathin water-stable MOF membranes remains a great challenge. Here, we first report the successful exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) monolayer aluminum tetra-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin framework (termed Al-MOF) nanosheets. Ultrathin water-stable Al-MOF membranes are assembled by using the exfoliated nanosheets as building blocks. While achieving a water flux of up to 2.2 mol m-2 hour-1 bar-1, the obtained 2D Al-MOF laminar membranes exhibit rejection rates of nearly 100% on investigated inorganic ions. The simulation results confirm that intrinsic nanopores of the Al-MOF nanosheets domain the ion/water separation, and the vertically aligned aperture channels are the main transport pathways for water molecules.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are being intensively explored as filler materials for polymeric membranes primarily due to their high polymer affinity, large pore volumes, and alterable pore functionalities, but the development of MOF-based ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for water treatment lags behind. Herein, poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA)-functionalized MOF UiO-66-PSBMA was developed, and incorporated into polysulfone (PSf) casting solution to fabricate novel hybrid UF membranes via phase-inversion method. The resultant UiO-66-PSBMA/PSf membrane exhibited significantly improved water flux (up to 602 L m h), which was 2.5 times that of the pristine PSf membrane (240 L m h) and 2 times that of UiO-66-NH/PSf membrane (294 L m h), whereas the rejection of UiO-66-PSBMA/PSf membrane was still maintained at a high level. Moreover, UiO-66-PSBMA/PSf membrane exhibited improved antifouling performance. The improvement of membrane performances could be attributed to the well-tailored properties of UiO-66-PSBMA. On one hand, the excellent dispersion and compatibility of UiO-66-PSBMA ensured the formation of a uniform structure with few defects. On the other hand, the superhydrophilicity of UiO-66-PSBMA could accelerate the exchange rate between solvent and nonsolvent, resulting in a more hydrophilic surface and a more porous structure. Besides, UiO-66-PSBMA nanoparticles in the thin layer provided additional flow paths for water permeation through their hydrophilic porous structure as well as the tiny interspace between PSf matrix. This study indicates the great application potential of UiO-66-PSBMA in fabricating hybrid UF membranes and provides a useful guideline to integrate other modified hydrophilic MOFs to design UF membranes for water treatment.
Incorporation of lysine-modified UiO-66 for the construction of thin-film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane with enhanced water flux and salt selectivity

Abstract:The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been proved to be promising in the attainment of high-performance membranes. In this work, lysine-decorated UiO-66 () is prepared via post-synthetic modification. Then, the controlled positioning of on a polyethersulfone (PES) substrate membrane is achieved by a pressure-assisted method, followed by interfacial polymerization to fabricate the thin-film nanocomposite membrane (TFN-LDU). An even distribution of hydrophilic MOFs atop the substrate induces the formation of regular tent-like and mesh-topology polyamide structures, which enhance the effective membrane surface area and provide additional water transport channels. The optimal membrane with a loading density of 17.13 μg cm−2, TFN-LDU8, achieves a 55% enhancement in water permeability (18.27 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) without compromising the solute selectivity. Importantly, the TFN-LDU8 membrane exhibits high rejections of divalent cation salts (97.81% for MgCl2 and 92.81% for CaCl2) and improved mono-/divalent cation selectivity due to the pore hindrance and electrostatic exclusion of the Furthermore, the TFN-LDU8 membrane evinces a stable nanofiltration performance during the long-term nanofiltration experiment and displays a good antifouling ability in the fouling tests. This research provides a promising strategy for the design of nanofiltration membranes with special functions by using modified MOFs.

Abstract:The organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) process provides unprecedented opportunities for simultaneous concentration of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and recovery of organic solvents. However, the fabrication of membranes with precise sieving effects that can realize high solvent permeance and minimize reverse salt flux remains an enormous challenge. Through engineering the functionality of artificial subnanochannels, here, we report a metal–organic framework (MOF)-based membrane with ion-selective subnanochannels to achieve excellent OSFO performance, which overcomes the trade-off between solvent permeance and reverse salt flux. The sulfonated NH2-UiO-66 (SA-NH-UiO-66) composite membranes effectively inhibit the conduction of LiCl in aqueous and organic solutions driven by a potential difference, with conductivities of up to 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the porous polymer substrate, which is mainly attributed to the high-density sulfonic acid groups that offer negative charges and narrow down the channel size of the MOF membrane. Moreover, the SA-NH-UiO-66 membranes have well-defined pore sizes and high porosity, showing a methanol permeance of 40.2 LMH, a low reverse salt flux of 2.1 gMH, and a 99% rejection of APIs under the osmotic pressure in the OSFO process, which surpass those of state-of-the-art polymer membranes. This work sheds light on developing artificial ion-selective subnanochannel-based membranes for sustainable separation in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:Developing polymer membranes with high permeability, fouling resistance, and rejection capability is a challenging task that requires the use of novel materials to enhance these properties. In this study, composite ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by incorporating two types of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), UIO66 and UIO66@PDA, into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) using the nonsolvent thermally induced phase separation (NTIPS) method. The results demonstrated that the NTIPS method combined the characteristics of nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) to fabricate asymmetric membranes with a dense ultra-thin top layer and a bicontinuous network structure. Moreover, the introduction of 1.0 wt% UIO66@PDA into PVDF membranes yielded notable improvements in mechanical strength, thermal stability, and porosity. Concurrently, this led to a water flux rise from 182.5 to 464.7 L·m-2·h-1, and enhanced BSA and HA rejection to 96% and 83%, respectively. Additionally, there was a significant improvement in the membrane's antifouling capacity, achieving a water flux recovery ratio of 93%. This was facilitated by the increased hydrophilicity of UIO66@PDA, which attracted more water molecules and reduced membrane fouling. This work offers a solution to overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off in membrane separation by hydrophilic modification of hydrophobic membranes, while also addressing fouling issues.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous interest in preparing a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane. Especially, the membrane performance could be optimized by using MOFs as modifying agents, which takes advantage of their adjustable and regular pore structure, good compatibility with polymers, and superb functional designability. In this study, a tailored TFN polyamide membrane for nanofiltration was successfully fabricated via interfacial polymerization by incorporating MOF-808 into the selective layer on top of a poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) substrate. An MOF-808 nanoparticle with a size of approximately 60 nm and a high specific surface area of 1666 m2·g–1 was synthesized using a two-step green method and embedded into the polyamide layer. The surface morphology of the resultant TFN membrane evolved from the nodular structure to a particle aggregation configuration with increased roughness and enhanced hydrophilicity when adding more MOF-808. In particular, the membrane prepared with 0.02 wt % MOF-808 exhibited exceptional water permeance with 17.63 LMH·bar–1 with a well-maintained Na2SO4 rejection of 97.67%, which is superior to commercial membranes and most TFN membranes reported in the literature. The molecular dynamics simulation results showed that the introduction of the MOF-808 filler can significantly enhance the mass transfer of water in the TFN membrane. In addition, the newly designed TFN membrane possessed excellent ion separation performance and superior long-time stability. The findings in this study demonstrate a strategy to regulate the membrane structure, which will provide an impetus for the MOF-based TFN membrane in water treatment and desalination applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials show great potential in wastewater separation applications. In this study, zirconium-based MOFs (UiO-66) were prepared and constructed universal, high-performance, and flexible nanofiltration (NF) membrane for various dyes and antibiotics separation. The substrate was constructed by two-steps, a) doping graphene oxide (GO) sheets into the membrane casting solution containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and forming 2D-3D connecting pores by phase immersion conversion method (defined as GO@PAN), b) immersing the GO@PAN substrate into dopamine solution to self-polymerize into chain macromolecules, which obtaining good compatible and flexible substrate (defined as PGP). Moreover, the UiO-66 was synthesized via solvothermal method and subsequently coated onto the PGP substrate by vacuum-assisted filtration. Benefiting from the water stability, porous structure, and negative charge of UiO-66, the outstanding filtration performance of the UiO-66/PGP thin-film composite (TFC) membrane was achieved. The pure water permeability of the UiO-66/PGP TFC membrane was 31.33 ± 0.75 L m−2h−1 bar−1, and the rejection rates for dye (Congo red, Methyl orange, Rhodamine B, and Methylene blue) and antibiotic (Tetracycline hydrochloride, Oxytetracycline, and Ciprofloxacin) were above 94%. Therefore, we further explored the retention mechanism of the UiO-66/PGP TFC membrane for dye and antibiotic separation (size exclusion and electrostatic interaction). More importantly, antifouling properties and long-time stability of the UiO-66/PGP TFC membrane were also evaluated. These results indicated that the prepared UiO-66/PGP TFC membrane is promising for wastewater treatment, separation, and purification in many industrial and pharmaceutical fields.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high porosity and designable functionality make it possible to access the merits of high permeability and selectivity. However, scalable fabrication methods to produce mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with good flexibility and ultrahigh MOF loading are urgently needed yet largely unmet. Herein, we report a thermally induced phase separation-hot pressing (TIPS-HoP) strategy to roll-to-roll produce 10 distinct MOF-membranes (loadings up to 86 wt%). Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene interweaving the MOF particles contributes to their mechanical strength. Rejections (99%) of organic dyes with a water flux of 125.7 L m –2 h –1 bar –1 under cross-flow filtration mode. The micron-sized channels between the MOF particles translate into fast water permeation, while the porous MOFs reject solutes through rapid adsorption. This strategy paves ways for developing high-performance membrane adsorbers for crucial separation processes. As a proof-of-concept, the abilities of the membrane adsorbers for separating racemates and proteins have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Four different thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were prepared by adding different concentrations of porous Zr-MOFs (UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2) to piperazine (PIP) aqueous solution (aqueous phase) or 1,3,5-Benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC)-n-hexane solution (organic phase) by interfacial polymerization. The main purpose is to study the specific effects of different addition methods and addition amounts of nanoparticles on the structure and performance of the TFN membranes by interfacial polymerization. All four TFN membranes exhibited higher water permeability while maintaining high salt rejection compared to thin film composite (TFC) membrane. On the one hand, the TFN membranes behaves differently which are prepared by adding the same kind of nanoparticles to the aqueous phase or organic phase, respectively. The TFN membrane prepared by adding 0.2 w/v% UiO-66 to the organic phase had high water flux of 87.86 L·m-2·h-1, comparing 46.31 L·m-2·h-1 of membrane prepared by adding 0.3 w/v% UiO-66 in the aqueous phase. This is due to the fact that UiO-66 greatly slows the interfacial polymerization rate when UiO-66 is added to the organic phase, resulting in a thinner and more aperture polyamide thin film layer, reducing the water transmission resistance during filtration. Therefore, it is more economical by adding nanoparticles to organic phase than aqueous phase under the same filtering effect. On the other hand, different nanoparticles can also cause differences in performance and structure of the TFN membranes even in the same preparation manner. TFN membrane with UiO-66-NH2 in the aqueous phase has higher water permeance than the one with UiO-66 in the aqueous phase, owning to good hydrophilicity of amino group, which improves the water dispersibility of UiO-66-NH2, so that the TFN membrane is more uniform. In addition, UiO-66-NH2 slows down the process of interface polymerization, making the membrane more porous. The monomers in aqueous phase and the organic phase can be adsorbed in the pores of Zr-MOFs, which makes the interfacial polymerization occur both in the pores and on the surface of the pores. Thus, the compatibility between the polyamide and MOFs was enhanced and less defects was formed in the thin film layer, resulting in high salt rejection even the concentration of Zr-MOFs increased. This is the first time to explain that polyamide membrane has not obvious salt rejection attenuation with increasing porous material content using pore adsorption reaction monomer principle. Also, the Zr-MOFs based TFN membrane exhibited good heat resistance and anti-fouling property. This work shows that porous Zr-MOFs nanomaterials have significant advantages in the development of nanofiltration membranes with high water flux and rejection.

Designing heterogeneous MOF-on-MOF membrane with hierarchical pores for effective water treatment

Abstract:Rationally regulating the separation pores is an effective way to achieve efficient separation membrane. However, the developed metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes for water treatment are all formed by one kind of MOF, which can only provide rigid pores, makes it difficult to achieve high flux and excellent rejection ratio simultaneity. Here, we proposed a facile strategy for the synthesis of heterogeneous MOF-on-MOF membrane with hierarchical pores, by site-specific grown ZIF-8 layer on UiO-66-NH2 layer. Thus unique architecture of the obtained double-layered MOF membrane (UiO-66-NH2@ZIF-8) endows multidimensional separation pores: (i) the large pores of UiO-66-NH2 can facilitate water transportation, (ii) the molecular-sieving pores of ZIF-8 can intercept dyes, (iii) UiO-66-NH2 acting as active sites can promote the growth of ZIF-8. As a result, the optimized UiO-66-NH2@ZIF-8 membrane exhibits high flux (36.7 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) and excellent dye rejections (>97.0%). Through analysis and comparison, the regulated multi-type pores play an important role in membrane performance. Coupled with the facile membrane preparing method, this work can used as a potential approach of designing other advanced MOF membrane for water treatment.

Abstract:Introducing porous nanomaterials into polyamide thin layer has been identified to be a desirable approach to improve separation performance of nanofiltration membrane. In this work, a novel sandwich-like thin-film nanocomposite membrane (TFNi) featuring an interlayer was prepared. The interlayer, composed of porous UiO-66-NH 2 metal organic framework and adhesive tannic acid (TA), was formed between amphiphilic poly(vinylidene fluoride)-grafting-poly(acrylic acid) substrate and polyamide top layer by self-assembly and interfacial polymerization. TFNis were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, AFM, XRD, water contact angle, zeta potential, molecular weight cut off, flux and ion retention. Results showed that the introduction of interlayer could enhance efficiently membrane flux and ion removal. TFNi-3 membrane constructed by an optimized stepwise deposition, had a high permeate flux (65.4 L m −2 h −1 ), and good removal efficiencies towards single molybdenum(VI) (Mo(VI)) (98.1 %), single salt (30.8 % for NaCl, 96.5 % for Na 2 SO 4 ) and mixed solutions (37.0 % for NaCl-Mo(VI), 93.6 % for Na 2 SO 4 -Mo(VI), 76.1 % for NaCl-Na 2 SO 4 -Mo(VI)). The adsorption experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also carried out. Amino and zirconium oxygen clusters in UiO-66-NH 2 and polyphenol in TA were main adsorption sites. In addition, TFNi-3 had the favorable stability. Perhaps it has a potential application for desalination and Mo(VI) removal from wastewaters.

Preparation of Metal–Organic Framework/Polyvinylidene Fluoride Mixed Matrix Membranes for Water Treatment

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based mixed matrix membranes have become a research hotspot in separation field owing to the compatibility between MOF particles and the polymeric matrix. Herein, three types of MOF materials (MW-MIL-101(Cr), MW-UiO-66, and MW-ZIF-8) were successfully synthesized with the microwave-assisted solvo/hydrothermal method. Also, the reaction times of MW-UiO-66 and MW-MIL-101(Cr) are effectively shortened to 5 and 30 min, respectively. Subsequently, high-performance MOF/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mixed matrix membranes were fabricated via the phase inversion method for water desalination. Compared with the pristine PVDF membrane, the introduction of hydrophilic MW-MIL-101(Cr) and MW-UiO-66 crystals significantly increases water permeability and salt rejection of the mixed matrix membrane because the ordered pore structure is beneficial for selective permeability to salt ions. For the mixed matrix membrane with a PVDF concentration of 20 wt % and MW-UiO-66 doping amount of 30 wt %, water permeability can reach up to 72.57 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1, along with NaCl rejection (96%) being between commercial NF90-4040 (91%) and SWC6-4040 (99%) membranes. A thin film nanocomposite membrane with pre-immobilized UiO-66-NH2 toward enhanced nanofiltration performance

Abstract:A facile controlled interfacial polymerization strategy was proposed for the synthesis of novel thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes for enhanced nanofiltration performance. UiO-66 nanoparticles were aminated and pre-immobilized onto a polymer substrate via polydopamine (PDA) coating to achieve a continuous and defect-free polyamide dense layer. The mediation of the PDA coating could not only enhance the structural stability of TFN nanofiltration membranes, but also improve the dispersion and anchorage of UiO-66-NH2, thus closely fixing the position of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles on the polymer substrate. Moreover, since the amino group (-NH2) further reacted with PDA via Michael addition or Schiff base reaction, the in situ mutual reaction reduced the nanoparticle losses significantly during the draining off of the monomer solution in the fabrication process, which effectively cut down the actual dosage. The results showed that the PDA interlayer could induce the tight attachment of the PA layer to the support, enhancing the structural stability of TFN membranes. Furthermore, the dosage of UiO-66-NH2 in the as-prepared TFN membranes could also be decreased to as low as 0.01 w/v%, which was nearly a 10-20-fold reduction in the required amount of UiO-66-NH2 for the synthesis. The fabricated TFN/UiO-66-NH2 membranes exhibited very high water permeance and competitive salt rejections in cross-flow nanofiltration, which shows the huge potential for the application of novel TFN membranes with controlled nanoparticle incorporation in industrial separation.

Abstract:Selective ion transport in nanoporous membranes has become a research hot spot in the fields of both nanofluidics and membrane separation because of its wide potential applications, such as ion separation, energy harvesting and conversion, and ion sensing. Developing nanofluidic devices or membranes with nanoconfined to subnanoconfined space is the core part of nanofluidic studies because the materials used to construct nanofluidic devices determine the exploration potential of the ion-transport performance. In addition, tuning the macroscopic structure of devices, such as asymmetric or heterogeneous structures, in terms of both aperture size and charge density can impart multiple nanofluidic functions. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of crystalline porous materials with desirable structures for constructing controllable microscopic nanofluidic devices as an alternative to other materials, such as Si/SiNx, polymers, and two dimensional (2D) layered materials. (i) MOFs have high porosity with aperture sizes ranging from the angstrom to nanometer scale and can provide abundant pathways for ion transport. (ii) Water-stable MOFs can maintain channel stability without severe swelling issues. (iii) The huge diversity of MOFs in terms of aperture size, channel dimension, and chemical environment allows for the systematic investigation of one individual effect on selective ion transport by excluding other influencing factors to a great extent. (iv) Most MOFs have well-ordered molecular structures with the arrangement of each atom being known. This favors the high reliability of theoretical modeling to simulate nanofluidic transport and then unveil mechanisms for selective ion transport. In this Account, we discuss recent progress in the selective ion transport of MOF-based subnanochannel (MOFSNC) membranes by the rational design and fabrication of high-quality SNC membranes, mainly based on our group’s work. First, we refer to ion–ion selectivity as anion–anion or cation–cation selectivity and cation–anion or anion–cation selectivity while excluding the water molecule-ion selectivity in desalination and water purification. Second, we highlight the advantages of MOF structures as SNC platforms for the investigation of subnanometer confined ion transport. Third, we discuss the rational design of MOFSNCs for ultimate ion selectivity by molecular engineering and membrane structural engineering of MOFSNCs with the biomimetic strategy. Finally, we conclude this Account with a perspective on the future opportunities and major challenges in MOFSNC membranes, such as their practical applications in ion separation and nanofluidics.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an increasingly popular class of porous materials due to their tailorable structure comprised of ordered porous cavities, high specific surface areas, and versatile functional organic ligands. Implementation of these porous materials into membrane separation technologies can create an energy-efficient alternative for ion-selective separation. However, their low stability in aqueous environments and other challenges has limited their industrial breakthrough. In the past five years, many developments have improved MOF-based membranes for the selective separation of target ions. Novel insight into MOF-based membranes' structure-property relationships improves dispersibility, stability, size-sieving, electrostatic repulsion, and ionic conductivity for ideal membrane performance. The latest design principles for MOF-based membrane use advanced confinement conversion, in situ self-assembly, layer-by-layer assembly, and interfacial polymerization methods for enhanced separation performance. Analysis of separation mechanisms in MOF-based membranes now extends applications to desalination, lithium extraction, removal of heavy metal ions, and separation of ions from organic solvents. Overall, further development of MOF-based membranes presents numerous opportunities and challenges in target ion separation.

Abstract:Abstract Rational design of high-performance stable metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes is challenging, especially for the sustainable treatment of hypersaline waters to address critical global environmental issues. Herein, a molecular-level intra-crystalline defect strategy combined with a selective layer thinning protocol is proposed to fabricate robust ultrathin missing-linker UiO-66 (ML-UiO-66) membrane to enable fast water permeation. Besides almost complete salt rejection, high and stable water flux is achieved even under long-term pervaporation operation in hash environments, which effectively addresses challenging stability issues. Then, detailed structural characterizations are employed to identify the type, chemical functionality, and density of intra-crystalline missing-linker defects. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations shed light on the positive atomistic role of these defects, which are responsible for substantially enhancing structural hydrophilicity and enlarging pore window, consequently allowing ultra-fast water transport via a lower-energy-barrier pathway across three-dimensional sub-nanochannels during pervaporation. Unlike common unfavorable defect effects, the present positive intra-crystalline defect engineering concept at the molecular level is expected to pave a promising way toward not only rational design of next-generation MOF membranes with enhanced permeation performance, but additional water treatment applications.

Abstract:The design and preparation of polymeric membranes with excellent permeability while maintaining the high rejection remains a great challenge. In this study, water-soluble metal-organic framework nanoparticles are fabricated and used as additive for modification of polyethersulfone membrane to form a uniform porous membrane by liquid-liquid phase conversion technology. The water-soluble metal-organic framework nanoparticles can be removed by water dissolution, which is beneficial to form a thin and porous separation layer on the modified membrane. And we can control the amount and size of pores in the modified membrane by changing the concentration and size of the metal-organic framework nanoparticles. Therefore, permeability of the modified membrane is significantly improved. When the mass fraction of metal-organic framework nanoparticle is 3%, the water flux of the modified membrane is up to 121.5 L m−2 h−1, and has a high rejection close to 100% for bovine serum albumin. The rejection rates of modified membranes for methyl blue and congo red are 82.3 and 98.6%, respectively. Our work provides a simple method to fabricate an advanced modified membrane with outstanding separation performance.
