Abstract:Nanoscale carbon particles have emerged as versatile precursors for a new class of highly fluorescent nanomaterials that resemble semiconductor quantum dots. The surface-passivated fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, dubbed ‘carbon dots’, were already demonstrated for their potential optical bioimaging applications in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we conducted a systematic cytotoxicity evaluation on the carbon dots prepared by various combinations of precursor carbon nanoparticles and molecules for the particle surface functionalization. The results suggested that the cytotoxicity of carbon dots was dependent on the selection of surface passivation molecules. Those dots showing more significant cytotoxicity at higher concentrations were also evaluated for their effects on the fluorescence imaging of live cells. The implications of the results on the eventual use of carbon dots as cell imaging agents are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The surface properties of nanomaterials are an important consideration in most scientific and technological applications. Several methodologies can maneuver these properties while surface modification is the most common technique. Carbon Dots (CDs) are viable competitive materials for their pacific environment, chemical inertness, tunable photoluminescence, low cost, eco-friendliness, biocompatibility, schematic surface functionalization, and sophisticated utilization in nanomaterial’s surface modification. The nanoparticle surface attribute is modified for a specific purpose to use in several applications by dint of the tunable properties of CDs. Multifunctional CDs have a great potential to replace traditionally toxic and costly quantum dots through surface modification. This review presents how multifunctional CDs conjugated with other nanoparticles take an active part in medicine and biomedical fields with chemical and physical collaborations. Moreover, the basics of conjugate formation by different chemical and physical interactions of functional molecules are appraised from multiple perspectives. This article also describes different modification mechanisms followed by properties of the modified nano-conjugates. The surface modification affects fluorescence quantum yields, complexation potential, fluorescent coloring, and quenching capabilities. Resultant-modified nanoconjugates are powerful surfaces for drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, analysis, and therapeutic methods. Abstract:As emerging carbon materials, carbon dots (CDs) have received extensive attention in recent years. Since CDs have excellent optical properties, most reports on carbon dots focus on research of their optical applications. However, their diverse surface functional groups also afford broad application prospects in chemical engineering. This review article focuses on the research progress in the chemical applications of CDs in the following three aspects: CDs used as structural regulators of the morphology and size of materials; CDs used as chemical additives, such as consolidant, antirust, antifreeze, lubricant, and scale inhibitors; CDs used as reinforcing reagents to improve water dispersibility and enhance mechanical properties of materials. Finally, we focus on existing problems in this field and look forward in the direction of future development.

Abstract:Although there is significant progress in the research of carbon dots (CDs), some challenges such as difficulty in large-scale synthesis, complicated purification, low quantum yield, ambiguity in structure-property correlation, electronic structures, and photophysics are still major obstacles that hinder the commercial use of CDs. Recent advances in synthesis, modification, characterization, and applications of CDs are summarized in this review. We illustrate some examples to correlate process parameters, structures, compositions, properties, and performances of CDs-based materials. The advances in the synthesis approach, purification methods, and modification/doping methods for the synthesis of CDs are also presented. Moreover, some examples of the kilogram-scale fabrication of CDs are given. The properties and performance of CDs can be tuned by some synthesis parameters, such as the incubation time and precursor ratio, the laser pulse width, and the average molar mass of the polymeric precursor. Surface passivation also has a significant influence on the particle sizes of CDs. Moreover, some factors affect the properties and performance of CDs, such as the polarity-sensitive fluorescence effect and concentration-dependent multicolor luminescence, together with the size and surface states of CDs. The synchrotron near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) test has been proved to be a useful tool to explore the correlation among structural features, photophysics, and emission performance of CDs. Recent advances of CDs in bioimaging, sensing, therapy, energy, fertilizer, separation, security authentication, food packing, flame retardant, and co-catalyst for environmental remediation applications were reviewed in this article. Furthermore, the roles of CDs, doped CDs, and their composites in these applications were also demonstrated.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a unique class of 0D nanomaterials, featured by a graphitic core and shell layers saturated with hydrogen atoms and functional groups. CQDs are prepared through top-down and bottom-up strategies from natural and synthetic precursors. CQDs can be modified through chemical (e.g., surface functionalization/passivation, doping, etc.) and physical (e.g., core–shell architecture, composite material blending, etc.) strategies to control their properties. This review highlights the effect of such modifications on the photophysical properties of CQDs, such as photoluminescence (PL), absorbance, and relaxivity. The dependence of PL upon the size, orientation at the edges, surface and edge functionalization, doping, excitation wavelength, concentration, pH, aggregate formation, etc., are summarized along with the supporting theoretical evidence available in the literature. Also, this review outlines the recent advancements, and future prospective of optical (e.g., sensing, bioimaging, and fluorescent ink) and catalytic applications (e.g., photocatalysis and electrocatalysis) of CQDs enhanced through physical and chemical modifications of their structure and composition.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of carbon nanomaterial that have unique physical and chemical properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and easy surface functionalization, making them widely used in biological imaging, environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, targeted drug delivery, disease diagnosis, therapy, etc. In this review, our content is mainly divided into four parts. In the first part, we focused on the preparation methods of CDs, including arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical oxidation, chemical oxidation, combustion, hydrothermal/solvent thermal, microwave, template, method etc. Next, we summarized methods of CD modification, including heteroatom doping and surface functionalization. Then, we discussed the optical properties of CDs (ultraviolet absorption, photoluminescence, up-conversion fluorescence, etc.). Lastly, we reviewed the common applications of CDs in biomedicine from the aspects of in vivo and in vitro imaging, sensors, drug delivery, cancer theranostics, etc. Furthermore, we also discussed the existing problems and the future development direction of CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted considerable interest due to their remarkable performance, low cost and ease of preparation, and wide range of potential applications. Surface engineering, including modifying the surface functional group and subsequent chemical modification, is preferable to achieve the requirement of the specific application. Oxygen and Nitrogen-based surface functional groups are two common functionalizations on CDs that are subsequently generated during the synthetic process. In this study, we elucidate the optical properties of oxygen and nitrogen-functionalized CDs using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Both considered functional groups, the carbon-oxygen double bond (-C=O) and amino groups (-NH 2 ), are quite favourable to tailor the optical properties of CDs, especially in enhancing its absorption spectrum. Moreover, the carbonyl (-C=O) and amino (-NH 2 ) functional groups effectively serve a new absorption peak in the first near-infrared window (650-900 nm). Our results suggest the potential application of the amino and carbonyl functionalized CDs as a photothermal agent in photothermal cancer therapy.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), which are emerging as a novel class of carbon-based functional nanomaterials, can be fabricated from various carbon-based materials such as graphite, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes and many other organic materials. Recently, researchers have paid attention to emerging CDs and investigated their application prospects in a variety of fields, including optical, energy and biomedical technologies. In this review, we provide an up-to-date account of the design, preparation, fundamentals and applications of functional CDs. We begin with an overview on the synthetic methods of novel CDs, including "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches, post-synthetic modification and functionalisation, through which the diverse properties of CDs such as optical, dispersibility and biocompatibility properties are introduced. We then showcase the applications of advanced CDs in different fields, including optical applications (data security, sensors, light-emitting diodes, and chiral), energy applications (photocatalysts, solar photovoltaics, supercapacitors, and lithium-ion batteries) and promising biomedical applications (bioimaging and nanomedicine). We discuss the fundamental design ideas of such emerging and unique CDs, introduce their synthetic strategies and emphasise their significant applications. This review is expected to provide significant impetus towards the rapid expansion of this new materials field which is rooted in materials chemistry. The fields covered include physics, chemistry, biology, nanotechnology, energy, polymers, device engineering and other interdisciplinary areas.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), comprising crystalline graphitized carbon cores and polymer surface groups, are currently attracting a lot of interest in biological fields owing to their fluorescent properties, high photostability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In addition, the easy preparation and functionalization of CDs stimulate the development of CDs‐based composite materials with specific functions. Presently, the biological applications of CDs are growing at a remarkable speed, justifying the need for up‐to‐date review articles that capture recent progress in this blossoming field. In this review, breakthroughs in the synthesis, modification, optical properties, toxicology and biocatalytic platforms of CDs are described. Further, recent research related to bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, antibacterial, anticancer (photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy and synergistic therapy) and antiviral therapies involving CDs are discussed in detail. Finally, a perspective on the prospects and challenges of CDs in the fields of biomedicine and biotechnology is provided. The development and application of new functional nanomaterials have always been the focus of various research fields. Among them, carbon dots (CDs) are the newest member of the carbon‐based nanomaterials, which has aroused great interest in bioapplications due to its extraordinary optical and biological properties. Abstract:Supramolecular host molecules are used as tools in the design of multifunctional nanoparticles for sensors, catalysts, biometric elements, etc. Combining with carbon dots (CDs) has excellent host-guest recognition properties and fluorescence characteristics, which can precisely capture and identify target analytes. Consequently, supramolecular host molecules-based CDs can significantly improve the detection performance of ions and molecules with different structures or intrinsic chemical properties. This currently responds to a wide range of analytes including metal cations, anions, organic compounds and other biomolecules, yielding fascinating achievements in the field of chemistry. Therefore, the present review summarizes outstanding supramolecular host molecules-based CDs reported in the past ten years. The focus is on elucidating the mechanisms, methodologies, advantages and disadvantages of modifying or preparing CDs with supramolecular host molecules. Current challenges encountered and outlooks are also be discussed.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have rapidly emerged as a new family of carbon-based nanomaterials since their initial discovery two decades ago. Numerous appealing properties, such as precursor and synthesis process flexibility, tunable photoluminescence, and good biocompatibility, have enabled their widespread applications in sensing, catalysis, energy, and biomedical fields. As the field expands, notable efforts have recently focused on mechanistically elucidating the structural formation and optical behavior of CDs. However, the absence of "clean" CDs presents a major obstacle to achieving a solid understanding of these aspects. Often, the claimed CDs are, in fact, a mixture of small molecules, oligomers, nano-sized aggregates, or even microparticles. Such coexistence of impurities markedly impacts the physicochemical properties of resulting CD-based mixtures, hampering the resolution of key mechanistic questions. Here, we aim to address this fundamental shortcoming of the field, going beyond the customary focus of the existing reviews that predominantly cover synthesis, optical performance, and application prospects. We begin with an overview of CD synthesis and then thoroughly examine the purification methods, including filtration, dialysis, electrophoresis, and chromatography. The insights provided here will guide the researchers towards obtaining high-quality CDs, employing proper combinations of available tools, and ultimately paving the way for more demanding applications.

The dominant role of surface functionalization in carbon dots' photo-activated antibacterial activity

Abstract:Background: Carbon dots (CDots) have recently been demonstrated their effective visible light-activated antimicrobial activities toward bacteria. This study was to evaluate and understand the roles of the surface functionalities in governing the antimicrobial activity of CDots. Methods: Using the laboratory model bacteria Bacillus subtilis, the photo-activated antimicrobial activities of three groups of CDots with specifically selected different surface functionalization moieties were evaluated and compared. The first group consisting of CDots with surface functionalization by 2,2-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) (EDA) vs. 3-ethoxypropylamine (EPA), was evaluated to determine the effect of different terminal groups/charges on their photo-activated antibacterial activities. The second group consisting of CDots functionalized with oligomeric polyethylenimine (PEI) and those prepared by the carbonization of PEI - citric acid mixture, was to evaluate the effects of dot surface charges vs. fluorescent quantum yields on their antimicrobial activities. The third group consisting of CDots functionalized with PEI of 1,200 vs. 600 in average molecular weight was evaluated for the effect of molecular weight of surface passivation molecular on their antimicrobial activities. Results: The results indicated the EDA-CDots in the first group was more effective and was attributed to the positive charges from the protonation of the amino groups (-NH2) being more favorable to interactions with bacterial cells. The evaluation of the second group CDots suggested the same surface charge effect dominating the antibacterial performance over the fluorescent quantum yields. The evaluation of the third group CDots functionalized with PEI of 1,200 vs. 600 in average molecular weight, indicated the latter was significantly more effective. Conclusions: The results from this study highlighted the dominant role of surface functionalities in governing CDots' light activated antimicrobial activity and should have significant implications to the further design and development of CDots as a new class of visible light-activated antibacterial agents.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDots) in a general structure of small carbon nanoparticles with various surface passivation schemes have emerged to represent a new class of carbon nanomaterials in now a rapidly advancing and expanding research field. Among various synthesis methods, the use of pre-processed and selected small carbon nanoparticles for deliberate chemical functionalization of the particle surface with organic molecules have produced high-performance and structurally better defined CDots. Specifically, small organic molecules 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) and 3-ethoxypropylamine were used for the effective surface passivation of the carbon nanoparticles via chemical functionalization to yield CDots that are brightly fluorescent and also structurally ultra-compact, amenable to various desired cell imaging applications. Thus, a systematic evaluation of these CDots on their cytotoxicity profiles is necessary, and performed in this study by using a diverse selection of cell lines. Also for fluorescence imaging, CDots were modified with their encapsulating selected organic dyes for much enhanced red/near-IR fluorescence emissions. These modified CDots with the dyes as guest were also evaluated for their cytotoxicity profiles. The results suggest that the CDots without and with the guest dyes are generally nontoxic to the selected cell lines, further supporting the notion that CDots can be used as high-performance yet nontoxic bioimaging agents.

Abstract:Luminescent carbon dots (CDs) have received increasing attention from many fields during the past decade. Unfortunately, the luminescent mechanisms of CDs remain unclear due to insufficient experimental and theoretical knowledge, which significantly hinders the development of CDs with desired optical properties. Currently, surface states of CDs, which are based on synergistic hybridization between the carbon backbones and the connected functional groups, have been considered as the dominant luminescence origins. This tutorial paper, thus, aims to offer an overview of the key features on the surface of CDs, such as particle size, surface functional groups, defects and heteroatom doping, and their influences on the photoluminescence of CDs. In addition, optical characteristics of surface state-derived luminescence emissions of CDs are also summarized. Finally, the potential approaches of characterizing surface states of CDs are introduced, followed by an outlook of synthesizing high-quality CDs through modulation of the surface states.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) as new nanomaterials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their unique characteristics. Notably, structure and interface modification (carbon core, edge, defects, and functional groups) of CDs have been considered as valid methods to regulate their properties, which contain electron transfer effect, electrochemical activity, fluorescence luminescent, and so on. Additionally, CDs with ultrasmall size, excellent dispersibility, high specific surface area, and abundant functional groups can guarantee positive and extraordinary effects in electrical energy storage and conversion. Therefore, CDs are used to couple with other materials by constructing a special interface structure to enhance their properties. Here, diverse structural and interfacial modifications of CDs with various heteroatoms and synergy effects are systematically analyzed. And not only several main syntheses of CDs-based composites (CDs/X) are summarized but also the merit and demerit of CDs/X in electrical energy storage are discussed. Finally, the applications of CDs/X in energy storage devices (supercapacitors, batteries) and electrocatalysts for practical applications are discussed. This review mainly provides a comprehensive summary and future prospect for synthesis, modification, and electrochemical applications of CDs.

Abstract:This review offers an overview and an outlook on the large‐scale bottom‐up preparation methods of carbon dots and their functionalization as well as large‐scale applications, including enhancing mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and energy storage. Carbon dots (CDs), fluorescent carbon nanoparticles with particle sizes < 10 nm, are constantly being developed for potential large‐scale applications. Recently, methods allow CD synthesis to be carried out on large‐scale preparation in a controlled fashion are potentially important for multiple disciplines, including bottom‐up strategy, top‐down method. In this review, the recent progresses in the research of the methods for large‐scale production of CDs and their functionalization are summarized. Especially, the methods of CD synthesis, such as large‐scale preparation, hydrothermal/solvothermal, microwave‐assisted, magnetic hyperthermia microfluidic and other methods, along with functionalization of CDs, are summarized in detail. By promising applications of CDs, there are three aspects have been already reported, such as enhancing mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and energy storage. Also, future development of CDs is prospected.

Abstract:The most recent developments in the synthesis, applications, and characterization methods for CDs derived from natural sources are the main topics of this study. It will also guide researchers towards the development of a more workable, efficient, and ecologically friendly synthesis method for tunable carbon dots. Since the beginning of nanoscience and nanotechnology, carbon dots (CDs) have been the foundational idea and have dominated the growth of the nano‐field. CDs are an intriguing platform for utilization in biology, technology, catalysis, and other fields thanks to their numerous distinctive structural, physicochemical, and photochemical characteristics. Since several carbon dots have already been created, they have been assessed based on their synthesis process, and luminescence characteristics. Due to their biocompatibility, less toxic effects, and most significantly their fluorescent features in contrast to other carbon nanostructures, CDs have several benefits. This review focuses on the most recent advancements in the characterization, applications, and synthesis techniques used for CDs made from natural sources. It will also direct scientists in the creation of a synthesis technique for adjustable carbon dots that is more practical, effective, and environmentally benign. With low toxicity and low cost, CDs are meeting the new era's requirements for more selectivity and sensitivity in the detection and sensing of various things, such as biomaterial sensing, enzymes, chemical contamination, and temperature sensing. Its variety of properties, such as optical properties, chemiluminescence, and morphological analysis, make it a good option to use in bioimaging, drug delivery, biosensors, and cancer diagnosis.

Abstract:This mini-review discussed the best-known chemical and synthetic methodologies used in the last years to modify carbon allotropes, with an interest in nanotechnology. In this perspective, chemistry with optoelectronics applications and recent trends within bio-applications focusing mainly on graphene and its derivatives were considered. So, the mini-review intended to focus on methodologies to add functional groups with varied reactivities, polymer chemistry, and nanoscale control. These methodologies provide insight for further developments. In this manner, traditional methods using strong acid media to convert simple carbon bonds into carboxylic acid and aldehydes organic functional groups were shown and discussed. Hence, chemical modifications in a variety of solvents could be developed. Notably, many organic chemical reactions, such as bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2), click chemistry, and photochemical reactions, showed essential insights in designing the carbon-based material modifications and the bottom-up method. Moreover, incorporating atomic entities within graphene material defects led to interesting spectroscopic and quantum properties. The atomic change added blemishes to this homogeneous structure, which was tuned to modify optical properties. In addition, the review was also oriented towards the discussion on incorporating polymeric films, such as boron- and silicon-based monomers, to form polymeric-modified carbon-based slides. In this way, organoboranes and organosilanes permitted chemical functionalization because their chemical modification was more accessible on nanosurfaces. Moreover, emphasis was placed on exploiting non-covalent bonding with ions and polarized molecules with the highly electronic densities of graphene and its derivatives. In this manner, the manuscript intends to summarize the main types of reactions and synthetic pathways reported until today. Therefore, particular focus was given to chemical composition, 2D and 3D chemical structures, and their properties related to non-covalent interactions. Thus, based on the properties and reactivity of carbon allotropes, the review was intended to open the analysis and discussion, considering the design of new carbon-based materials, hybrid nanocomposites, and metamaterials.
