Abstract:Molecular imprinting technology has been developed rapidly in recent years and applied in various fields,including separation engineering,chemical sensors and analogy enzyme catalysis,due to its high selectivity,specific recognition and so on. However,a little attention has been paid to molecularly imprinted hydrogels. Temperature-sensitive molecularly imprinted hydrogels,obtained by combining molecular imprinting technique with temperature-sensitive hydrogels,provide both the specific identification properties and stimuli-responsiveness to the environment temperature changes, which means that the specific recognition of such hydrogels to the template molecules changes with temperature variation. This paper is aimed to not only review the specific identification principle and preparation approaches of temperature-sensitive molecularly imprinted hydrogels,but also to highlight the application of temperature-sensitive molecularly imprinted hydrogels in metal-ion , organic molecules and protein imprinting. In this review,the possible development of temperature-sensitive molecularly imprinted hydrogels is prospected,which will show enormous potential applications in many fields,such as material separation and drug controlled release system.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDBinary functional monomers, allyl--cyclodextrin (allyl--CD) and methacrylic acid (MAA) or allyl--CD and acrylonitrile (AN), were exploited in a fabrication of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for selective recognition and large enrichment of pirimicarb from aqueous media. RESULTSSpecial attention was paid to the computational simulation of the imprinting molecular and functional monomers. The morphological characteristics of MIPs made of allyl--CD and MAA (M-MAA) were characterised by scanning electron microscopy. The effect of binding capacity of MAA-linked allyl--CD MIPs (M-MAA) demonstrated higher efficiency than that of AN-linked allyl--CD MIPs (M-AN) when tested in binding specificity. Finally, M-MAA was chosen to run through molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) to analyse the spiked fresh leafy vegetables of pirimicarb. CONCLUSIONThe present proposed technique is a promising tool for the preparation of the receptors which could recognise pirimicarb pesticide in aqueous media. (c) 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:The structurally stable molecularly imprinted hollow microspheres (MIHM) were prepared by the Pickering emulsion method using ZIF-8 as the stable particle and amoxicillin (AMOX) as the template molecule. MIHM were used to separate amoxicillin from solution. The physicochemical properties and adsorption properties of MIHM were studied by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and static adsorption experiments. The results show that ZIF-8 nanoparticles can stabilize the Pickering emulsion, and the particles are distributed on the surface of hollow MIHM capsules with a capsule size of about 20-80 mu m. The results of adsorption experiments showed that MIHM had a large adsorption capacity for AMOX, and reached an adsorption capacity of 0.1577 mmol g(-1) in AMOX solution (308 K, pH = 7.0, and 100 mg L-1). MIHM showed high selectivity for AMOX in selective adsorption experiments. After 5 cycles of recycling, the adsorption capacity of materials only decreased by 9.03%. So, it proves that the MIHM have good regenerability.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are very suitable for extraction, drug delivery systems, and sensors due to their good selective adsorption ability, but the difficulty of eluting templates during synthesis and the limitation of application scenarios put higher demands on MIPs. Stimuli‐responsive MIPs (SR‐MIPs) can actively respond to changes in external conditions to realize various functions, which provides new ideas for the further development of MIPs. This paper reviews the multiple response modes of MIPs, including the common temperature, pH, photo, magnetic, redox‐responsive and rare gas, biomolecule, ion, and solvent‐responsive MIPs, and explains the mechanism, composition, and applications of such SR‐MIPs. These SR‐MIPs and the resulting dual/multiple‐responsive MIPs have good selectivity, and controllability, and are very promising for isolation and extraction, targeted drug delivery, and electro‐sensor.

Abstract:Novel, temperature-responsive molecularly imprinted polymers (TMIPs) based on potassium hexatitanate whiskers for selectively adsorbing sulfadiazine (SDZ) from aqueous media were prepared with methacrylic acid (MAA) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) as cofunctional monomers and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) as a temperature-responsive monomer. The template–monomer interactions were studied by molecular simulation. In particular, the effects of different kinds of crosslinkers on the selective recognition ability of the TMIPs in water media were investigated. The temperature–responsive adsorption performance and phase behavior of the molecularly imprinted polymers were studied by batch-mode binding experiments, swelling experiments, and contact angle testing. The results demonstrate that the combination of MAA, 4-VP, and NIPAM was a favorable temperature-responsive imprinted system for SDZ in water, and the cocrosslinking agent of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) was more suitable compared with either pure EGDMA or MBA. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were analyzed by the fitting of different adsorption models. Also, the effect of the temperature on the recovery was investigated by the determination of the spiked SDZ in real-water samples with solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of magnetic covalent organic framework molecularly imprinted polymers at room temperature: A novel imprinted strategy for thermo-sensitive substance

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with specific selective recognition have shown excellent performance in the rapid and efficient separation and enrichment of targets in complex systems. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for thermosensitive substances with biological functions. To this end, an imine-linked MIPs with covalent organic frameworks and magnetic nanoparticles was developed by using a room temperature synthesis strategy for the purification of Cyaninin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) from black chokeberry. The prepared material recognized C3G through π-π interaction, assisted by hydrogen bond, and will not be disturbed by water environment. The adsorption capacity and equilibrium binding constant were 86.92 mg g-1 and 1.46 L mg-1, respectively. Based on this special structure, it can also act as a "protective umbrella" and improve the stability of C3G. Furthermore, it exhibited high selectivity compared with dummy template imprinting technique. After purification, the purity of C3G was obviously improved (from 11.96% to 84.72%). This work provided a new strategy for the selective separation of anthocyanin and a method to develop MIPs for thermosensitive substances.

Abstract:As a widely occurring natural product, alkaloids have garnered increasing attention in drug research and development. The efficient, convenient, and environmentally friendly separation and detection of alkaloid compounds from diverse natural products has garnered increasing attention in recent research. Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) is recognized as an effective method for the selective extraction and separation of alkaloids from complex samples due to its capacity for specific recognition. To date, no comprehensive review has been published on the separation and purification of alkaloids using MIT, particularly regarding the sustainability aspects of this technology. In this paper, we review the general preparation methods of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for alkaloids, including bulk polymerization, precipitation polymerization, magnetic polymerization, and emulsion polymerization. Additionally, we summarize various applications of MIPs for alkaloids, such as different forms of MIP‐based solid phase extraction (MISPE) and MIP‐based sensors for alkaloids detection. Finally, we address some unresolved issues and anticipate future developments in the field.

Abstract:The organic residues of tricyclic analogs (TAA) in the environment such as cyproheptadine (CYP), amitriptyline (AMI), desloratadine (DES), 8-chloroazatadine (8-CHL), ketotifen fumarate (KF), and so on, brought many negative effects on human health. Hence, a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) combining magnetic Fe3O4 as the core with molecularly imprinted polymer using CYP as the template molecule, was successfully synthesized for highly selective capture and removal of TAA in water rapidly. CYP was selected as a template molecule, which was attributed to its representative structure among the five tricyclic analogues, and relatively inexpensive cost. The key preparation conditions were systematically optimized. The structure, morphology and adsorption behavior of MMIPs were studied in detail. The experimental results indicate that the prepared MMIPs possess high adsorption capacity, good selectivity, and fast reaction kinetics for tricyclic analogs. The maximum adsorption capacity of MMIPs for CYP, AMI, DES, 8-CHL, and KF is 48.89, 47.14, 47.33, 46.89, and 42.14 mg/g, respectively, which is significantly higher than that of magnetic non-molecular imprinting polymerizations because of the imprinting effect, with an imprinted layer thickness of approximately 10 nm. The imprinting factors of the synthesized materials are 4.74, 5.63, 5.69, 6.91, and 5.68, respectively. Meanwhile, the recovery rate of standard addition in environmental water samples is greater than 94.77%. Therefore, the synthesized MMIPs can be used as a promising material to capture and remove TAA in water selectively and quickly.

Abstract:We describe molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microprobes for manipulating neurological function by the thermoregulatory process. Some target and disease areas show raised temperature than normal temperature which are involved in neuronal diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Hunting ton's diseases. As well thermodynamic parameters can be obtained in the environments in vitro, which that the assay involves a temperature variable, at or beyond body temperature. We applied for studying molecular aspects of hypothalamus regulated physiology and behaviors. Steady-state binding was detected by fluorescence and Boltzmann energies-based fluorescence emission showed interactions of clozapine with altered energy levels. Dynamic spectra revealed dramatic effects on the fluorescence of the drug in dopamine imprint of MIPs exposed rat hypothalamic membranes at different temperatures. The MIPs that cooperatively occupied and provided the response to the neural proteins were not likely to be involved in the binding of clozapine within the cavity. The results indicated that the dynamics on the surface of proteins exposed to the drug-MIP with assembly, mediated specific function through temperature-dependent molecular interaction in the hypothalamus. Thus, this approach is applicable to processes of key importance of controlling the energy homeostasis and, plausibly, to selective signaling can affect in plasticity of the neural response. Abstract:To realize the selective separation of L-tyrosine (L-Tyr) and avoid the drawbacks of traditional thermal polymerization, electron beam irradiation polymerization was developed for the fabrication of L-Tyr molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Firstly, L-Tyr MIPs were prepared with methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and without an initiator. Then, the influence of absorbed dosage and temperature on the adsorption capacity of L-Tyr, as well as the thermodynamic behavior, were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of 10.96 mg/g for MIPs was obtained with an irradiation dosage of 340 kGy under 15 °C, and the ΔH0 and ΔS0 of the adsorption process are −99.79 kJ/mol and −0.31 kJ/mol·K, respectively. In addition, the effect of adsorption time on adsorption performance was evaluated under different initial concentrations, and the kinetic behavior was fitted with four different models. Finally, the recognition property of the obtained MIPs was investigated with L-Tyr and two analogues. The obtained MIPs have an imprinting factor of 5.1 and relatively high selective coefficients of 3.9 and 3.5 against L-tryptophan and L-phenylalanine, respectively. This work not only provided an L-Tyr MIP with high adsorption capacity and selectivity but also provided an effective and clean method for the synthesis of MIPs.

Abstract:In this work, a novel magnetic nanomaterial functionalized with a molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared for the extraction of protoberberine alkaloids. Molecularly imprinted polymers were made on the surface of Fe3 O4 nanoparticles by using berberine as template, acetonitrile/water as porogen, acrylamide as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker. The optimized molar ratio of template/functional monomer was 1:7. The polymeric magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The stability and adsorption capacity of the molecularly imprinted polymers were investigated. The molecularly imprinted polymers were used as a selective sorbent for the magnetic molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction and determination of jatrorrhizine, palmatine, and berberine. Extraction parameters were studied including loading pH, sample volume, stirring speed, and extraction time. Finally, a magnetic molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed. Under the optimized conditions, the method showed good linear range of 0.1-150 ng/mL for berberine and 0.1-100 ng/mL for jatrorrhizine and palmatine. The limit of detection was 0.01 ng/mL for berberine and 0.02 ng/mL for jatrorrhizine and palmatine. The proposed method has been applied to determine protoberberine alkaloids in Cortex phellodendri and rat plasma samples. The recoveries ranged from 87.33-102.43%, with relative standard deviation less than 4.54% in Cortex phellodendri and from 102.22-111.15% with relative standard deviation less than 4.59% in plasma.

Abstract:Nowadays, the development of sustainable molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with high selectivity is still challenging due to the limitations of bio-based functional monomers. In this study, the highly selective and porous MIPs (LC-TMIPs) were designed and prepared on short amylose (SAM) as bio-based functional monomers, λ-cyhalothrin (LC) as a template molecule, and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile as a rigid crosslinking agent. Static, dynamic, and selective adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption performance. The results indicated that, compared to MIPs prepared using epichlorohydrin as flexible crosslinking agents, LC-TMIPs exhibited higher imprinting factor (3.93), selectivity (5.78), and adsorption capacity (35.79 mg g −1 ), as well as faster adsorption/desorption kinetics. The LC-TMIPs were used as sorbents for the selective determination of LC in both apple and cucumber samples by high-performance liquid chromatography. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the recoveries of the method reached 92.1–106.1 %, with a linear range of 1.5–30 ng g −1 and a detection limit of 0.5 ng g −1 . The proposed preparation method of LC-TMIPs is expected to open a new way to prepare highly selective and sustainable MIPs for hydrophobic compounds.

Abstract:A luminescent trimethylamine (TMA) sensor, PTMA-Ir, has been designed and synthesized through immobilizing the phosphorescent iridium(III) complex on a TMA-imprinted polymer. Detailed study shows that the quenching of phosphorescence of PTMA-Ir can serve as a reporter for the binding of TMA on the imprinting sites, thus providing a sensitive, selective, and fast detection of TMA in both aqueous solutions and gaseous states. Loading PTMA-Ir on filter paper fabricated the deposition T-Ir, which would have its phosphorescence quenching within 5 s upon exposure to TMA vapor with detection limits of 9.0 ± 0.1 ppm under argon and 15.0 ± 0.1 ppm in air atmosphere. This work provided an effective method to establish imprinting polymer-immobilized luminescent amine sensor.

Water-compatible halloysite-imprinted polymer by Pickering emulsion polymerization for the selective recognition of herbicides

Abstract:A water-compatible molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization using halloysite nanotubes as stabilized solid particles. During polymerization, we used 4-vinylpyridine as monomer, divinylbenzene as cross-linking agent, toluene as porogen, 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid as template to form the oil phase, and Triton X-100 aqueous solution to form the water phase. The halloysite nanotubes molecularly imprinted polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Kinetic and equilibrium bindings were also employed to evaluate the adsorption properties of the imprinted polymer. The imprinted polymer showed better selectivity, more rapid kinetic binding (60 min) for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in pure water compared with rebinding in toluene. The imprinted polymer was used as a sorbent to enrich and separate 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid from water, and was detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection.

Abstract:The tunable and nano-sized materials have recently been received much attention due to the unique physical and chemical properties which are different from bulk materials. Moleculary imprinted polymer (MIP) nanoparticles with special functions provide opportunities for transformative approaches for a wide of variety applications such as imaging, adsorbent, therapeutic reagents, drug delivery vehicles, sensors, toxin neutralization and enzyme inhibition. In this review, the principle, fabrication approaches, parameters to affect affinity and selectivity of MIP were summarized. The application of MIPs for removal of pollutants as well as the separation of macrobiomolecules was also introduced. Through the tuning processes, MIPs can satisfy the needs of simple, fast, cost-effective and robust. In addition, MIPs are easily to be integrated with the diagnosis and separation system, which have instinct advantages in separation, drug delivery, therapeutic and diagnosis fields. Contents shown in this review clearly show that MIPs are highly potential materials for facile design for not only separating the molecules from small molecules to biomolecules by precipitation polymerization but can also be used for imaging, cell tissue engineering and antidotes.
Facile and green synthesis of hydrophilic imprinted resin in deep eutectic solvents-water for specific molecular recognition of tumor biomarkers in complex biological matrices

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are highly promising materials due to their excellent specific selectivity, chemical stability, and straightforward preparation process. However, their weak molecular recognition towards the target compounds and limited water compatibility have restricted their applications in aqueous matrices. Furthermore, the majority of MIPs are synthesized using toxic organic reagents under non-mild conditions, involving complicated procedures that result in environmental pollution. To address these issues associated with existing MIPs, a novel hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin (HIR) was efficiently prepared in an environmentally friendly process that avoids the use of large quantities of hazardous organic solvents. During the synthesis, phloroglucinol was employed as a hydrophilic functional monomer to introduce abundant hydrophilic groups, hexamethylenetetramine was used as an eco-friendly cross-linking agent instead of formaldehyde, and deep eutectic solvent-water served as the green solvent. The resulting HIR exhibited outstanding molecular recognition capabilities for tumor biomarkers in water phases due to its synthesis in a polar system. Moreover, the entire process was conducted using a mild, simple, and environmentally friendly approach. The physical, chemical, adsorption capacity, and application of HIR were comprehensively investigated through adsorption and extraction experiments, as well as various characterization methods. The results revealed that HIR possesses multiple excellent characteristics, including remarkable water compatibility, selectivity (IF = 19.2−111.6), and high adsorption capacity (35.2−50.3 mg g−1) for tumor biomarkers. Notably, HIR exhibited superior specific recognition of tumor biomarkers when compared to commercial adsorbents. Furthermore, HIR has been successfully employed for selectively extracting and enriching tumor biomarkers from urine samples, demonstrating its practicality in biological and clinical applications. This study introduces a new strategy for developing green protocols to prepare water-compatible MIPs for the selective separation of tumor biomarkers from complex biological samples.

Functionalized MXene becomes an important part of the hydrogel’s skeleton by participating in the free radical polymerization reaction. Therefore, FMMIH exhibits improved mechanical properties and great photothermal conversion performance. Furthermore, based on the temperature/pH dual response, FMMIH can realize the controllable capture and release of ginsenoside Rb1 with cis diol structures through dual recognitions of functional groups and geometric space. Under the conditions of pH 8.5 and 25 °C, the adsorption capacity of FMMIH is 26.3 mg·g−1 and the imprinting factor is 16.4, showing a good imprinting effect. It is worth noting that the volume shrinkage caused by photothermal conversion of the hydrogel is conducive to the elution of template molecules and greatly saves the time of desorption (the desorption efficiency is as high as 89.4% under light conditions for 30 min, which is 3.7 times in dark conditions). These excellent properties make it possible to have broad prospects in many fields such as separation of cis-diol compounds, drug delivery systems, and biosensors.

Abstract:Tyrosine-imprinted polymeric beads with diameters in the range 120-140 mum were prepared in an aqueous system by seed swelling and suspension polymerization using trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) as the crosslinking agent and acrylamide (AM), 2-vinylpyridine (VP) and/or 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid (AMPS), respectively, as functional monomers (FMs). The molecular recognition properties, dynamic adsorption behaviours and regeneration capabilities of the molecularly imprinted beads (MIBs) were investigated via a solid-phase extraction method. The functional monomers were found to be indispensable for preparing MIBs with highly specific molecular recognition properties. Irrespective of the choice of FM, when the FM/TRIM molar ratio was 4:15 the MIBs prepared exhibited the most desirable properties for the purposes of this study. When only one FM was used, it was found that AMPS provided the best solution as far as all the adsorption, recognition and regeneration capabilities of the MIBs were concerned. However, MIBs with the best molecular recognition and adsorption properties, and with only a slight sacrifice in their regeneration properties, were prepared using AMPS and VP as bifunctional monomers. For such MIBs, the initial separation factor, alpha, and static distribution coefficient, K-D, were 2.01 and 2.15 ml/g, respectively.
Porous molecularly imprinted beads for highly specific separation of 10-hydroxycamptothecine: An imprinted strategy based on modified cellulose hydrogel

Abstract:10-hydroxycamptothecine (HCPT), known as a natural alkaloid with significant anti-cancer properties in Camptotheca acuminata , has valuable application prospects in health and medicine and has attracted worldwide attention especially in the field of cancer research. In this study, a porous cellulose hydrogel-based molecularly imprinted bead (PCH@MIBs) with high affinity and selectivity was prepared and served as novel fillers of solid phase extraction (SPE) for selectively separating HCPT. The combination of polydopamine (PDA) modified cellulose hydrogel and highly selective molecular imprinting technology enabled the efficient and targeted adsorption for template molecules. The mixture of nano-calcium carbonate and cellulose solution underwent a reaction with an acidic coagulation bath, which endowed the cellulose hydrogel beads with porous structures. Porous cellulose hydrogel beads were coated with a PDA layer, followed by the preparation of PCH@MIBs using HCPT as template molecules and acrylamide (AM) as functional monomers, resulting in hydrogel-based materials with specific adsorption cavities matched to HCPT. The PCH@MIBs exhibited excellent adsorption capacity (57.87 mg·g −1 ) and adsorption selectivity ( IF = 3.75), as well as good reusability (5 of cycles). The PCH@MIBs were successfully used to separate HCPT from C. acuminata fruits, with an impressive adsorption capacity (0.0974 mg·g −1 ) and recovery of HCPT (91.27 %). Mechanism analysis demonstrated that the recognition of PCH@MIBs was primarily achieved through non-covalent interactions between AM and HCPT, specifically hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces. This work proposes a novel strategy for constructing porous cellulose-based molecularly imprinted hydrogel beads to specific capture targeted compound, which have broad potential for practical application.
