Abstract:This article aims to act as a general literature review regarding the landscape, analyzing it through a synthesis of the main concepts and processes that have generated, and subsequently developed, the word “Landscape”. It is a versatile theme, because it has always been studied by various disciplines, through different theories, which sometimes even conflict with each other. Through the present text, we understand the importance and the unique value of the landscape, a value that has nowadays been transfigured by the strong industrialization and strong brand of man in the territory. Thus, the first part of the research is, to some extent, a reflection on current issues that are related to the landscape. It is also a tool for integration, including in the definition of “Landscape”, even those heavily humanized, exploited, degraded, abandoned, and residual; the so-called “Drosscape”, “Friche”, and “Terrain Vague”. The solution is not to negatively interpret these types of scenarios, but rather to enhance them as they are, filled with potential and creativity. This concept is achieved by means of an operation of recycling or reuse of waste, which is capable of germinating new life cycles within the “dead nature” of our increasingly cemented territories.

Abstract:Studies on ecosystem service from landscape scale aspect have received increasing attention from researchers all over the world. Compared with ecosystem scale, it should be more suitable to explore the influence of human activities on land use and land cover change (LUCC), and to interpret the mechanisms and processes of sustainable landscape dynamics on landscape scale. Based on comprehensive and systematic analysis of researches on landscape service, this paper firstly discussed basic concepts and classification of landscape service. Then, methods of evaluation, mapping and modeling of landscape service were analyzed and concluded. Finally, future trends for the research on landscape service were proposed. It was put forward that, exploring further connotation and classification system of landscape service, improving methods and quantitative indicators for evaluation, mapping and modelling of landscape service, carrying out long-term integrated researches on landscape pattern-process-service-scale relationships and enhancing the applications of theories and methods on landscape economics and landscape ecology are very important fields of the research on landscape service in future.
Landscape Pattern and Sustainability of A 1300-Year-old Agricultural Landscape in Subtropical Mountain Areas, Southwestern China

Abstract:The Hani terrace landscape located in the mountainous areas of Southwestern China has a history of 1300 years and is a classic example of human-environment harmony. This study investigates the spatial distribution and pattern characteristics of land cover in the landscape using geographical information system and remote-sensing techniques. With the synthetic consideration of both physical and cultural factors, the ecological stability of the landscape was discussed. The results showed that terrace' and forest' are dominant in the landscape accounting for 43.80% and 44.90% of the total area, respectively. A clear vertical land-cover distribution of higher forest-middle village-lower terrace-lowest river' can be found on steep slopes. The local climate and its variation with elevation are essential for the stable local water cycle, and the spatial layout of the landscape elements allows for effective material and energy flow within the landscape. Moreover, the obligatory forest and water resource conservation due to the unique history and culture of Hani adds a social layer of protection. The sustainable development of the Hani landscape is expected to provide valuable insights for the present land and environmental management.

Abstract:Alpine cultural landscapes are the result of a long process of social-ecological coevolution, and today face dramatic changes and risks, such as depopulation and abandonment of traditional land use. Some communities seem to adapt better and are benefiting from the changes, compared to others, which are losing their population and identity. Historic collective property institutions and traditional ecological knowledge play a key role. The direction of local development appears to be driven by the interaction of three main forces: culture, multiple-level governance and the local economy. We propose a systems thinking approach to unravel the complexities, highlighting causal connections and interdependency. Focusing on two study areas around Alpine forest-pasture ecotones, where the driving forces mentioned have a major impact, we recognised some general structures that can foster a social learning process by merging different sources of knowledge, promoting advanced understanding of their complexity and better strategies responding to emerging challenges.

Abstract:In agricultural landscapes, the composition and spatial configuration of cultivated and semi-natural elements strongly impact species dynamics, their interactions and habitat connectivity. To allow for landscape structural analysis and scenario generation, we here develop statistical tools for real landscapes composed of geometric elements including 2D patches but also 1D linear elements such as hedges. We design generative stochastic models that combine a multiplex network representation and Gibbs energy terms to characterize the distributional behavior of landscape descriptors for land-use categories. We implement Metropolis-Hastings for this new class of models to sample agricultural scenarios featuring parameter-controlled spatial and temporal patterns (e.g., geometry, connectivity, crop-rotation). Pseudolikelihood-based inference allows studying the relevance of model components in real landscapes through statistical and functional validation, the latter achieved by comparing commonly used landscape metrics between observed and simulated landscapes. Models fitted to subregions of the Lower Durance Valley (France) indicate strong deviation from random allocation, and they realistically capture small-scale landscape patterns. In summary, our approach of statistical modeling improves the understanding of structural and functional aspects of agro-ecosystems, and it enables simulation-based theoretical analysis of how landscape patterns shape biological and ecological processes.

Abstract:Our capability to reconstruct past landscapes and the processes that shape them underpins our understanding of paleo-Earth. We take advantage of a global-scale landscape evolution model assimilating paleoelevation and paleoclimate reconstructions over the past 100 million years. This model provides continuous quantifications of metrics critical to the understanding of the Earth system, from global physiography to sediment flux and stratigraphic architectures. We reappraise the role played by surface processes in controlling sediment delivery to the oceans and find stable sedimentation rates throughout the Cenozoic with distinct phases of sediment transfer from terrestrial to marine basins. Our simulation provides a tool for identifying inconsistencies in previous interpretations of the geological record as preserved in sedimentary strata, and in available paleoelevation and paleoclimatic reconstructions.

Abstract:From an ecological landscape perspective, cultural landscapes can be considered as “anthropized” landscapes, in which patterns and processes are altered by human intervention. The importance of the study of spatial patterns in landscapes is justified by the pattern/process paradigm. The emergent properties of patterns reflect two components: landscape composition, which describes the number of patch types as well as their abundance, and landscape configuration, which refers to the spatial arrangement of the patch types. In this chapter, methods and strategies to analyze spatial pattern and landscape dynamics are discussed, and emphasis is put on the detection and quantification of anthropogenic effects on landscapes. Land mosaics showing anthropogenic effects are characterized by fragmented natural land cover, high frequencies of edge habitat, simple patch geometry, and dominant proportions of anthropogenic patch types. Landscape transformations associated with “anthropization” lead to a disintegration of natural patch types and to a reinforcement of anthropogenic ones. Four techniques to measure anthropogenic effects on pattern are discussed (1) the quantification of the fragmentation of natural habitats and its interpretation in terms of diversity, heterogeneity and entropy, (2) the quantification of edge effects in order to measure the ecological impact of human activity, (3) the determination of patch fractal dimensions to detect pattern simplification, and (4) the determination of the landscape transformation processes responsible for pattern dynamics. At the end of the chapter, a short list of analysis methods and strategies is proposed for detecting and measuring landscape “anthropization.”

Abstract:Starting from the most recent international debate on the theme of cultural landscape, this study explores the theme of landscape as a ‘common good’ and as a field of investigation and experimentation of an innovative model of long-term sustainable tourism development. In this context, the document illustrates a multi-stakeholder spatial decision-making process based on an evaluation approach that is useful to support decision-makers in defining improvement strategies for resilient landscapes. The methodology was experimented on and tested as part of the ‘Sila Labscape’ project conducted in Sila National Park (Southern Italy), a UNESCO site of excellence. The purpose of the study is to support the park’s community in acquiring a greater awareness of the values and resources present within the park and to stimulate co-design for the enhancement and management of environmental and cultural sites. Starting from the representation of the landscape perceived by users, it is possible to trace the values and meanings of the most attractive places. The most relevant results concern the identification of perceived landscape values, the recognition of shared values, and their consequent use to map ‘places of value’. The elaboration, structuring, and evaluation processes allow the tracing of new touristic routes and the expression of shared intersubjective perception that are useful for supporting decision-makers in the development of potential integrated development strategies and actions.

Abstract:Landscapes are increasingly recognized for providing valuable cultural ecosystem services with numerous non-material benefits by serving as places of rest, relaxation, and inspiration that ultimately improve overall mental health and physical well-being. Maintaining and enhancing these valuable benefits through targeted management and conservation measures requires understanding the spatial and temporal determinants of perceived landscape values. Content contributed through mobile technologies and the web are emerging globally, providing a promising data source for localizing and assessing these landscape benefits. These georeferenced data offer rich in situ qualitative information through photos and comments that capture valued and special locations across large geographic areas. We present a novel method for mapping and modeling landscape values and perceptions that leverages viewshed analysis of georeferenced social media data. Using a high resolution LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) derived digital surface model, we are able to evaluate landscape characteristics associated with the visual-sensory qualities of outdoor recreationalists. Our results show the importance of historical monuments and attractions in addition to specific environmental features which are appreciated by the public. Evaluation of photo-image content highlights the opportunity of including temporally and spatially variable visual-sensory qualities in cultural ecosystem services (CES) evaluation like the sights, sounds and smells of wildlife and weather phenomena.
Numerical modelling of landscape evolution: geomorphological perspectives

Abstract:A resurgence of interest in landscape evolution has occurred as computational technology has made possible spatially and temporally extended numerical modelling. We review elements of a structured approach to model development and testing. It is argued that natural breaks in landscape process and morphology define appropriate spatial domains for the study of landscape evolution. The concept of virtual velocity is used to define appropriate timescales for the study of landscape change. Process specification in numerical modelling requires that the detail incorporated into equations be commensurable with the particular scale being considered. This may entail a mechanistic approach at small (spatial) scales, whereas a generalized approach to process definition may be preferred in large-scale studies. The distinction is illustrated by parameterizations for hillslope and fluvial transport processes based on scale considerations. Issues relevant to model implementation, including validation, verification, calibration and confirmation, are discussed. Finally, key developments and characteristics associated with three approaches to the study of landscape modelling:(i) conceptual; (ii) quasi-mechanistic; and (iii) generalized physics, are reviewed.

Abstract:Spatial-visual landscape design vocabulary is important for landscape architects to understand, design, and communicate about landscape spaces. Despite the importance, there is no comprehensive overview available. This article aims to fill this gap by reviewing and categorising the spatial-visual design vocabulary for the field of landscape architecture and to provide a systematic framework for understanding landscape spaces inter-subjectively. Based on the analysis of the vocabulary used in the extensive body of literature available in landscape architecture and related disciplines, four dominant categories are selected in describing spatial and visual organisation. The categories identified and discussed are sequence, orientation, continuity, and complexity. In addition, a landscape design syntax is developed to understand and to describe the visual manifestation of landscape spaces, how space is organised, and what ordering principles play a role from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives.

Decision tree algorithm for detection of spatial processes in landscape transformation

Abstract:The conversion of landscapes by human activities results in widespread changes in landscape spatial structure. Regardless of the type of land conversion, there appears to be a limited number of common spatial configurations that result from such land transformation processes. Some of these configurations are considered optimal or more desirable than others. Based on pattern geometry, we define ten processes responsible for pattern change: aggregation, attrition, creation, deformation, dissection, enlargement, fragmentation, perforation, shift, and shrinkage. A novelty in this contribution is the inclusion of transformation processes causing expansion of the land cover of interest. Consequently, we propose a decision tree algorithm that enables detection of these processes, based on three parameters that have to be determined before and after the transformation of the landscape: area, perimeter length, and number of patches of the focal landscape class. As an example, the decision tree algorithm is applied to determine the transformation processes of three divergent land cover change scenarios: deciduous woodland degradation in Cadiz Township (Wisconsin, USA) 1831-1950, canopy gap formation in a terra firme rain forest at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station (Amazonian Ecuador) 1997-1998, and forest regrowth in Petersham Township (Massachusetts, USA) 1830-1985. The examples signal the importance of the temporal resolution of the data, since long-term pattern conversions can be subdivided in stadia in which particular pattern components are altered by specific transformation processes.

Abstract:The formation of modifications or conception in the landscape could possibly, be a procedure relative to its natural and non-disturbance process; and it could be hastened by the occurrence of disturbance regimes. The objective of this research is to survey the changes in a landscape structure, over a period of 30 years, to attain information, as to the current conditions of land use, utilizing landscape metrics in the watershed area of the Latian Dam, so as to analyze the results and the voids present, towards obtaining a specified sustainable regional planning for the abovementioned watershed. Land use was identified and reviewed by means of four Landsat satellite images for 1987, 1998, 2007, and 2017; and in this watershed, it was classified into four classes, (a) build-up areas, (b) vegetated areas, (c) bare lands and (d) water bodies. Subsequently, by taking advantage of 7 metrics at the landscape level and 8 metrics at the class level, the landscape structure in this watershed was quantified by utilizing the Fragstats 4.2 Software. The survey results illustrated an increment in the number of patches (NP), decrementing the mean area of the patches (AREA-MN), and increasing the Interspersion & Juxtaposition Index (IJI) signifies amplified fragmentation at the landscape level in this watershed. Similarly, the NP has also incremented at the class level, and thus, the fragmentation of patches and fragmentation in the entire three classes of land use, namely, build-up areas, bare lands, and vegetated areas has occurred. The amount of patchiness for the build-up class, with due attention to the increment in the mean area of patches (AREA-MIN), which demonstrates the fact that, this class is inclined and has a tendency towards a coarse-grained structure and a metric decrement in the AREA-MIN in the vegetated areas, illustrates that this class is prone to the fine-grained structure.
