Abstract:We present simulations of large‐scale landscape evolution on tectonic time scales obtained from a new numerical model which allows for arbitrary spatial discretization. The new method makes use of efficient algorithms from the field of computational geometry to compute the set of natural neighbours of any irregular distribution of points in a plane. The natural neighbours are used to solve geomorphic equations that include erosion/deposition by channelled flow and diffusion. The algorithm has great geometrical flexibility, which makes it possible to solve problems involving complex boundaries, radially symmetrical uplift functions and horizontal tectonic transport across strike‐slip faults. The algorithm is also ideally suited for problems which require large variations in spatial discretization and/or self‐adaptive meshing. We present a number of examples to illustrate the power of the new approach and its advantages over more ‘classical’ models based on regular (rectangular) discretization. We also demonstrate that the synthetic river networks and landscapes generated by the model obey the laws of network composition and have scaling properties similar to those of natural landscapes. Finally we explain how orographically controlled precipitation and flexural isostasy may be easily incorporated in the model without sacrificing efficiency.

Abstract:While the past of terrain cannot be known precisely because an effect can result from many different causes, exploring these possible pasts opens the way to numerous applications ranging from movies and games to paleogeography. We introduce unerosion, an attempt to recover plausible past topographies from an input terrain represented as a height field. Our solution relies on novel algorithms for the backward simulation of different processes: fluvial erosion, sedimentation, and thermal erosion. This is achieved by re‐formulating the equations of erosion and sedimentation so that they can be simulated back in time. These algorithms can be combined to account for a succession of climate changes backward in time, while the possible ambiguities provide editing options to the user. Results show that our solution can approximately reverse different types of erosion while enabling users to explore a variety of alternative pasts. Using a chronology of climatic periods to inform us about the main erosion phenomena, we also went back in time using real measured terrain data. We checked the consistency with geological findings, namely the height of river beds hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Influence of Oscillating Vegetation Cover, Precipitation, and Sediment Transport on Topography: Insights from a Landscape Evolution Model

Abstract:Erosion and sediment transport in river catchments depend significantly on tectonics, climate and associated vegetation-cover. In this study, we used a numerical modelling approach to quantify the effects of temporal variations in precipitation rates and vegetation-cover over different uplift rates (0.05 mm a-1, 0.1 mm a-1, 0.2 mm a-1) and periodicities (23 kyr, 41 kyr and 100 kyr) of climate and associated vegetation-cover oscillations on erosion, sediment transport and deposition at catchment scale. Landlab, a landscape evolution modelling toolkit was modified to incorporate surface vegetation-cover dependent hillslope and coupled detachment-transport limited fluvial processes, weathering and soil production. The model was applied to (two) sites in the Coastal Chilean Cordillera namely Pan de Acuzar (~26), and La Campana (~33). These sites show a steep gradient in climate and vegetation density from arid climate and sparse vegetation density in northern latitudes to wetter temperate climate and abundant vegetation in the south, with granitic bedrock. The model simulations were run for 15 Myr to create steady-state topographies for both model domains. The sensitivity of these landscapes to changing climate and surface vegetation-cover was analyzed for 3 Myr for five transient model scenarios: (1) oscillating precipitation and constant vegetation cover, (2) constant precipitation and oscillating vegetation cover, (3) coupled oscillations in precipitation and vegetation cover, (4) coupled oscillations in precipitation and vegetation cover with variable periodicities, (5) coupled oscillations in precipitation and vegetation cover with variable rock uplift rates. The results suggest that erosion and sediment transport in densely vegetated landscapes are dominated by changes in precipitation, rather than vegetation-cover change in the southern study area (La Campana), as a result of higher amplitude of precipitation change i.e., 460 mm. Arid (northern) and sparsely vegetated landscapes are dominated by changes in vegetation density rather than precipitation, explained by higher erosion rates in periods with no surface vegetation-cover. Coupled oscillations in climate and vegetation cover suggested dampened influence of transient forcing on climate or vegetation-cover. The influence of periodicity of climate oscillations is significantly pronounced for shorter period (23 kyr oscillations) in terms of erosion rates. Results from different uplift rates suggested a positive linear relationship of topographic elevation and slope, erosion and sediment transport. However, sediment thickness decreases with increasing uplift rates, attributed to higher sediment flux on hillslopes due to linear dependence of slope on rock uplift rates. These results broadly demonstrate the implications of long term climate change with associated vegetation density on geomorphic processes shaping the topography.
A Model Investigation of Vegetation-Atmosphere Interactions on a Millennial Timescale

Abstract:A terrestrial biosphere model with dynamic vegetation capability, Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS2), coupled to the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM2) is used to investigate the multiple climate-forest equilibrium states of the climate system. A 1000-year control simulation and another 1000-year land cover change simulation that consisted of global deforestation for 100 years followed by re-growth of forests for the subsequent 900 years were performed. After several centuries of interactive climate-vegetation dynamics, the land cover change simulation converged to essentially the same climate state as the control simulation. However, the climate system takes about a millennium to reach the control forest state. In the absence of deep ocean feedbacks in our model, the millennial time scale for converging to the original climate state is dictated by long time scales of the vegetation dynamics in the northern high latitudes. Our idealized modeling study suggests that the equilibrium state reached after complete global deforestation followed by re-growth of forests is unlikely to be distinguishable from the control climate. The real world, however, could have multiple climate-forest states since our modeling study is unlikely to have represented all the essential ecological processes (e.g. altered fire regimes, seed sources and seedling establishment dynamics) for the re-establishment of major biomes.
Dynamical landscape and multistability of a climate model

Abstract:We apply two independent data analysis methodologies to locate stable climate states in an intermediate complexity climate model and analyse their interplay. First, drawing from the theory of quasi-potentials, and viewing the state space as an energy landscape with valleys and mountain ridges, we infer the relative likelihood of the identified multistable climate states and investigate the most likely transition trajectories as well as the expected transition times between them. Second, harnessing techniques from data science, and specifically manifold learning, we characterize the data landscape of the simulation output to find climate states and basin boundaries within a fully agnostic and unsupervised framework. Both approaches show remarkable agreement, and reveal, apart from the well known warm and snowball earth states, a third intermediate stable state in one of the two versions of PLASIM, the climate model used in this study. The combination of our approaches allows to identify how the negative feedback of ocean heat transport and entropy production via the hydrological cycle drastically change the topography of the dynamical landscape of Earth’s climate.

Abstract:Promoting sustainable soil management is a possible option for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the future. Several efforts in this area exist, and the application of spatially explicit models to anticipate the effect of possible actions on soils at a regional scale is widespread. Currently, models can simulate the impacts of changes on land cover, land management, and the climate on the soil carbon stocks. However, existing modeling tools do not incorporate the lateral transport and deposition of soil material, carbon, and nutrients caused by soil erosion. The absence of these fluxes may lead to an oversimplified representation of the processes, which hinders, for example, a further understanding of how erosion has been affecting the soil carbon pools and nutrients through time. The sediment transport during deposition and the sediment loss to rivers create dependence among the simulation units, forming a cumulative effect through the territory. If, on the one hand, such a characteristic implies that calculations must be made for large geographic areas corresponding to hydrological units, on the other hand, it also can make models computationally expensive, given that erosion and redeposition processes must be modeled at high resolution and over long timescales. In this sense, the present work has a three-fold objective. First, we provide the development details to represent in matrix form a spatially explicit process-based model coupling sediment, carbon, and erosion, transport, and deposition (ETD) processes of soil material in hillslopes and valley bottoms (i.e., the CE-DYNAM model). Second, we illustrate how the model can be calibrated and validated for Europe, where high-resolution datasets of the factors affecting erosion are available. Third, we presented the results for a depositional site, which is highly affected by incoming lateral fluxes from upstream lands. Our results showed that the benefits brought by the matrix approach to CE-DYNAM enabled the before-precluded possibility of applying it on a continental scale. The calibration and validation procedures indicated (i) a close match between the erosion rates calculated and previous works in the literature at local and national scales, (ii) the physical consistency of the parameters obtained from the data, and (iii) the capacity of the model in predicting sediment discharge to rivers in locations observed and unobserved during its calibration (model efficiency (ME) =0.603, R2=0.666; and ME =0.152, R2=0.438, respectively). The prediction of the carbon dynamics on a depositional site illustrated the model's ability to simulate the nonlinear impact of ETD fluxes on the carbon cycle. We expect that our work advances ETD models' description and facilitates their reproduction and incorporation in land surface models such as ORCHIDEE. We also hope that the patterns obtained in this work can guide future ETD models at a European scale.

Abstract:The main controlling variables for palaeo‐landscape evolution are investigated to assess their relative importance using the Gippsland Basin geological history. Palaeo‐landscape reconstruction is a complicated process controlled and affected by multiple variables, including tectonic, palaeo‐environment, sea‐level change, rainfall, sediment erosion, transportation, deposition etc. The Basin and Landscape Dynamics software (Badlands) software was used with an efficient Experimental Design to guide the selected scenarios, process the results, and generate the multi‐variate equations that define and identify the important controlling variables. The experimental design was used to test and identify the main uncertainties and their possible ranges, based on actual field data, while at the same time ensuring that the full multi‐dimensional space for those variables was covered to enable computation of multivariate equations from the minimum number of scenario runs. A full suite of 3D forward palaeo‐landscape models of the Gippsland Basin was built to reconstruct the basin history from its formation to the present (Early Cretaceous to Holocene, 137‐0Ma). The models are compared to the corresponding full 3D realistic structural and stratigraphic model of the basin that has been built in Petrel (Schlumberger software). This constrains the sedimentary, stratigraphic, burial and thermal histories to the relative subsidence rates and basin‐fill for each geological sequence by using the model isopachs input to the Badlands modelling. The experimental design required only 22 scenarios to fit 12 identified variables and test for possible interactions with each other. The most significant variables are those that control sediment supply including non‐marine Erodibility, Rainfall, (Rainfall x Area) exponent m, Slope and critical slope while maximum % Marine Deposition and marine dispersal are also required to fill the marine accommodation space. Sea Level and subsidence only become significant when rapid enough to outpace sediment supply. The controlling factors change over time with basin development from rift to post‐rift phases and interactions are highly significant.

Abstract:Modeling high-resolution terrains is a perennial challenge in the creation of virtual worlds. In this paper, we focus on the amplification of a low-resolution input terrain into a high-resolution, hydrologically consistent terrain featuring complex patterns by a multi-scale approach. Our framework combines the best of both worlds, relying on physics-inspired erosion models producing consistent erosion landmarks and introducing control at different scales, thus bridging the gap between physics-based erosion simulations and multi-scale procedural modeling. The method uses a fast and accurate approximation of different simulations, including thermal, stream power erosion and deposition performed at different scales to obtain a range of effects. Our approach provides landscape designers with tools for amplifying mountain ranges and valleys with consistent details.

Resilience of Terraced Landscapes to Human and Natural Impacts: A GIS-Based Reconstruction of Land Use Evolution in a Mediterranean Mountain Valley

Abstract:Terraced historical landscapes have multiple functions in mountain land, limiting erosion, enabling agricultural production and constituting cultural heritage. Currently, they are largely abandoned in Mediterranean regions and facing the ongoing impacts of climate change. Our aim is to reconstruct the evolution of land use on the terraces in order to test the hypothesis of the resilience of these landscapes and their age in recent history (17th–21st century). To achieve this, we used various current and archive spatial datasets and GIS knowledge to detect and map terraces and the changes in land use. We tested this hypothesis in a territory impacted by a recent extreme event, facing the challenge of its reconstruction. Our main outcome showed that the optimal use of the terraces corresponded to the demographic optimum of the mid-19th century, and they were gradually abandoned after the Second World War, with significant differences between Mediterranean and mountain lands. Despite this evolution, the terraces persisted and withstood an extreme event, validating our resilience hypothesis and opening avenues for the revitalization of this territory based on this heritage. These findings are drawing perspectives for the future of terraced landscapes in Mediterranean mountains in the context of climate change.

Abstract:Modeling soil evolution is an important step towards understanding the complexity of the soil system and its interaction with the other systems. The major challenge confronted by pedologists until now is the ability to develop models capable of describing the complete complexity of the soil system. This paper presents the state of art overview of such a soil evolution model, SoilGen, its applications and limitations. In addition, the paper gives an overview of how the SoilGen model may be linked to landscape evolution models to model soilscape development. SoilGen is a mechanistic pedogenetic model in which soil forming processes such as clay migration, decalcification, carbon cycling, bioturbation, physical and chemical weathering coupled with water flow are simulated at multi-millennium time scale. The model has been calibrated and undergone extensive field testing, giving reasonable results at both pedon and landscape scales. However discrepancies between observed and simulated soil properties such as base saturation (BS), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and pH have been reported. These have been attributed partly to simplification of soil forming processes particularly in the weathering and chemical systems. There is therefore a need to extend the description of chemical and weathering systems in the SoilGen model. These extensions will not only improve model performance but will also enlarge its application range in simulating the genesis of typical features of more than half of the WRB-Reference Soil Groups. We also note here that although landscape evolution models have been successfully applied to model soil production and distribution, simplified and/or incomplete description of soil forming processes remain major limitations. We therefore add to the voices in scientific literature calling for integration of pedon and landscape scale models. In addition there is critical need for high quality chronosequence, climosequence, and toposequence profile datasets to enhance calibration and validation of soil evolution models.
Earth's surface responses during geodynamic evolution: Numerical insight from the southern East China Sea Continental Shelf Basin, West Pacific

Abstract:<p>The interaction between the Earth's surface and deep geodynamic processes has a great influence on sedimentary patterns and characteristics of sedimentary systems, especially in the continental margin, such as the southern part of the East China Sea Continental Shelf Basin (ECSCSB). However, the exact processes and dynamics are poorly understood. The numerical tool (<em>Badlands</em>) was adopted to simulate the geological evolution of the southern ECSCSB during the Mesozoic transitional regime of the West Pacific continental margin, between 200 and 100 Ma. The numerical model involving four-dimensional (4D) sequence stratigraphy was validated by comparing with the tectono-morphology, sedimentary environments and sediment distribution. According to our findings, the transition was mainly controlled by three structural stages. The first transitional stage of the southern ECSCSB was mainly controlled by lithospheric-scale tectonic evolution. In the second stage, the dynamic topography contributed to slow regional uplift, while the last stage showed mantle-induced dynamic subsidence. The model results on 4D geomorphic characteristics, sediment distribution of basin evolution and deep dynamic topography, provided a quantitative image for geological evolution of the West Pacific continental margin in the Mesozoic.</p>

Abstract:Reliable reconstruction of global paleogeography through deep geologic time provides a key surface boundary condition for investigating many first-order Earth system and geodynamic processes such as climate change, geomagnetic field stability, regional geological and tectonic history, and biological evolution. Over the past decade, the development of the GPlates software led to a resurgence of community efforts in creating state-of-the-art plate tectonic models that integrate paleomagnetic, geological, and paleontological datasets, resulting in a plethora of reconstruction models. In this paper, we briefly review the strengths and weaknesses of existing global models, which depict alternative and sometimes contradictory tectonic scenarios. We then provide an overview of the general procedure in our construction of a revised Phanerozoic global paleogeographic model, including (1) evaluation of the paleomagnetic data that quantitatively dictate continental paleolatitudes and orientations, (2) selection of reference frames in which continents were positioned, and (3) calibration of continental longitudes in deep time. We update the apparent polar wander paths (APWPs) of the major continents using a recently developed weighted running mean approach, which rectifies two major issues with the conventional running mean approach regarding missing paleopoles in age windows and the enforced assumption of the Fisherian distribution. We re-evaluate the Phanerozoic continental reconstructions in a paleomagnetic framework using the updated APWPs, and calibrate continental paleolongitudes following the extended orthoversion hypothesis by placing the centroids of supercontinents Rodinia and Pangea 90 ° apart, with that of Rodinia at ~90°E. We emphasize that the resulting global model is not intended to provide solutions to all global tectonic issues throughout the entire Phanerozoic Eon. Rather, we present our results as one viable model of Phanerozoic tectonic history which, like many existing interpretations, is built upon our understanding of the paleomagnetic, geological, and paleontological observations. Our goals are for this study to highlight the fundamental differences between reconstruction models and to serve as a starting point for future studies to fill key data gaps and test alternative hypotheses and tectonic scenarios.

Abstract:Soil erosion by rainfall and runoff is an important process behind the redistribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) over land, thereby impacting the exchange of carbon (C) between land, atmosphere, and rivers. However, the net role of soil erosion in the global C cycle is still unclear as it involves small-scale SOC removal, transport, and redeposition processes that can only be addressed over selected small regions with complex models and measurements. This leads to uncertainties in future projections of SOC stocks and complicates the evaluation of strategies to mitigate climate change through increased SOC sequestration. In this study we present the parsimonious process-based Carbon Erosion DYNAMics model (CE-DYNAM) that links sediment dynamics resulting from water erosion with the C cycle along a cascade of hillslopes, floodplains, and rivers. The model simulates horizontal soil and C transfers triggered by erosion across landscapes and the resulting changes in land–atmosphere CO2 fluxes at a resolution of about 8 km at the catchment scale. CE-DYNAM is the result of the coupling of a previously developed coarse-resolution sediment budget model and the ecosystem C cycle and erosion removal model derived from the Organising Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems (ORCHIDEE) land surface model. CE-DYNAM is driven by spatially explicit historical land use change, climate forcing, and global atmospheric CO2 concentrations, affecting ecosystem productivity, erosion rates, and residence times of sediment and C in deposition sites. The main features of CE-DYNAM are (1) the spatially explicit simulation of sediment and C fluxes linking hillslopes and floodplains, (2) the relatively low number of parameters that allow for running the model at large spatial scales and over long timescales, and (3) its compatibility with global land surface models, thereby providing opportunities to study the effect of soil erosion under global changes. We present the model structure, concepts, limitations, and evaluation at the scale of the Rhine catchment for the period 1850–2005 CE (Common Era). Model results are validated against independent estimates of gross and net soil and C erosion rates and the spatial variability of SOC stocks from high-resolution modeling studies and observational datasets. We show that despite local differences, the resulting soil and C erosion rates, as well as SOC stocks from CE-DYNAM, are comparable to high-resolution estimates and observations at subbasin level. We find that soil erosion mobilized around 66±28 Tg (1012 g) of C under changing climate and land use over the non-Alpine region of the Rhine catchment over the entire period, assuming that the erosion loop of the C cycle was nearly steady state by 1850. This caused a net C sink equal to 2.1 %–2.7 % of the net primary productivity of the non-Alpine region over 1850–2005 CE. This sink is a result of the dynamic replacement of C on eroding sites that increases in this period due to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations enhancing the litter C input to the soil from primary production.

Abstract:Catchment erosion and sedimentation are influenced by variations in the rates of rock uplift (tectonics) and periodic fluctuations in climate and vegetation cover. This study focuses on quantifying the effects of changing climate and vegetation on erosion and sedimentation over distinct climate–vegetation settings by applying the Landlab–SPACE landscape evolution model. As catchment evolution is subjected to tectonic and climate forcings at millennial to million-year timescales, the simulations are performed for different tectonic scenarios and periodicities in climate–vegetation change. We present a series of generalized experiments that explore the sensitivity of catchment hillslope and fluvial erosion as well as sedimentation for different rock uplift rates (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 mm a−1) and Milankovitch climate periodicities (23, 41, and 100 kyr). Model inputs were parameterized for two different climate and vegetation conditions at two sites in the Chilean Coastal Cordillera at ∼26∘ S (arid and sparsely vegetated) and ∼33∘ S (Mediterranean). For each setting, steady-state topographies were produced for each uplift rate before introducing periodic variations in precipitation and vegetation cover. Following this, the sensitivity of these landscapes was analyzed for 3 Myr in a transient state. Results suggest that regardless of the uplift rate, transients in precipitation and vegetation cover resulted in transients in erosion rates in the direction of change in precipitation and vegetation. The transients in sedimentation were observed to be in the opposite direction of change in the precipitation and vegetation cover, with phase lags of ∼1.5–2.5 kyr. These phase lags can be attributed to the changes in plant functional type (PFT) distribution induced by the changes in climate and the regolith production rate. These effects are most pronounced over longer-period changes (100 kyr) and higher rock uplift rates (0.2 mm yr−1). This holds true for both the vegetation and climate settings considered. Furthermore, transient changes in catchment erosion due to varying vegetation and precipitation were between ∼35 % and 110 % of the background (rock uplift) rate and would be measurable with commonly used techniques (e.g., sediment flux histories, cosmogenic nuclides). Taken together, we find that vegetation-dependent erosion and sedimentation are influenced by Milankovitch timescale changes in climate but that these transient changes are superimposed upon tectonically driven rates of rock uplift.

Abstract:Vegetation is crucial for modulating rates of denudation and landscape evolution, as it stabilizes and protects hillslopes and intercepts rainfall. Climate conditions and the atmospheric CO2 concentration, hereafter [CO2], influence the establishment and performance of plants; thus, these factors have a direct influence on vegetation cover. In addition, vegetation dynamics (competition for space, light, nutrients, and water) and stochastic events (mortality and fires) determine the state of vegetation, response times to environmental perturbations and successional development. In spite of this, state-of-the-art reconstructions of past transient vegetation changes have not been accounted for in landscape evolution models. Here, a widely used dynamic vegetation model (LPJ-GUESS) was used to simulate vegetation composition/cover and surface runoff in Chile for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the mid-Holocene (MH) and the present day (PD). In addition, transient vegetation simulations were carried out from the LGM to PD for four sites in the Coastal Cordillera of Chile at a spatial and temporal resolution adequate for coupling with landscape evolution models. A new landform mode was introduced to LPJ-GUESS to enable a better simulation of vegetation dynamics and state at a sub-pixel resolution and to allow for future coupling with landscape evolution models operating at different spatial scales. Using a regionally adapted parameterization, LPJ-GUESS was capable of reproducing PD potential natural vegetation along the strong climatic gradients of Chile, and simulated vegetation cover was also in line with satellite-based observations. Simulated vegetation during the LGM differed markedly from PD conditions. Coastal cold temperate rainforests were displaced northward by about 5 degrees and the tree line and vegetation zones were at lower elevations than PD. Transient vegetation simulations indicate a marked shift in vegetation composition starting with the past glacial warming that coincides with a rise in [CO2]. Vegetation cover between the sites ranged from 13 % (LGM: 8 %) to 81 % (LGM: 73 %) for the northern Pan de Azficar and southern Nahuelbuta sites, respectively, but did not vary by more than 10 % over the 21 000 year simulation. A sensitivity study suggests that [CO2] is an important driver of vegetation changes and, thereby, potentially landscape evolution. Comparisons with other paleoclimate model drivers highlight the importance of model input on simulated vegetation. In the near future, we will directly couple LPJ-GUESS to a landscape evolution model (see companion paper) to build a fully coupled dynamic-vegetation/landscape evolution model that is forced with paleoclimate data from atmospheric general circulation models.

Two different transient variations in climate and vegetation cover include a step change in climate or vegetation, as well as 100 kyr oscillations over 5 Myr. Results indicate that the coupled influence of surface vegetation cover and mean annual precipitation shifts basin landforms towards a new steady state, with the magnitude of change highly sensitive to the initial vegetation and climate conditions of the basin. Dry, non-vegetated basins show higher magnitudes of adjustment than basins that are situated in wetter conditions with higher vegetation cover. For coupled conditions when surface vegetation cover and mean annual precipitation change simultaneously, the landscape response tends to be weaker. When vegetation cover and mean annual precipitation change independently from each other, higher magnitude shifts in topographic metrics are simulated. Changes in vegetation cover show a higher impact on topography for low initial surface cover values whereas for areas with high initial surface cover, the effect of changes in precipitation dominate the formation of landscapes. This study demonstrates a sensitivity of catchment characteristics to different transient forcings in vegetation cover and mean annual precipitation, with a crucial role for initial vegetation and climate conditions. Ongoing research is developing fully-coupled landscape evolution and dynamic vegetation model (see companion paper) forced with predicted paleoclimate histories from an atmospheric general circulation model.

A suite of simulations were conducted to represent present-day climatic conditions and satellite derived vegetation cover at four different research areas in the Chilean Coastal Cordillera. These simulations included steady-state simulations as well as transient simulations with forcings in either climate or vegetation cover over millennial to million-year timescales. Two different transient variations in climate and vegetation cover including a step change in climate or vegetation were used, as well as 100 kyr oscillations over 5 Myr. Abstract:Abstract Currently, the use of numerical models for reproducing the evolution of river systems and landscapes is part of the day-by-day research activities of fluvial engineers and geomorphologists. However, despite landscape evolution modelling is based on a rather long tradition, and scientists and practitioners are studying how to schematize the processes involved in the evolution of a landscape since decades, there is still the need for improving the knowledge of the physical mechanisms and their numerical coding. Updating past review papers, the present work focuses on the first aspect, discussing six main components of a landscape evolution model, namely continuity of mass, hillslope processes, water flow, erosion and sediment transport, soil properties, vegetation dynamics. The more common schematizations are discussed in a plain language, pointing out the current knowledge and possible open questions to be addressed in the future, towards an improvement of the reliability of such kind of models in describing the evolution of fluvial landscapes and river networks.

Erosion rate estimation across a large-scale domain from surface analyses, thermochronology and cosmogenic nuclide concentrations: A case study from Germany.

Abstract:Topography and relief reflect the long-term competition between tectonics and surface processes linked to climate. The integration of tectonics, climate and surface processes in numerical modelling have the potential to quantify landscape evolution over large periods of time. Analytical methods such as 1) low-temperature thermochronology sensible to long timescale (i.e. ~Myrs) and 2) cosmogenic nuclide concentrations sensible to shorter time scales (i.e., ~Kyrs) allow the calibration of such models. Analyses of a catchment’s topography combined with the previous analytical data can, therefore, be used to reconstruct the continuous uplift or erosion history of this specific landscape. However, reconstruction at larger spatial scale where numerous catchments are involved remains challenging. Difficulties arise from different base-levels, tectonics and climate settings that control the different catchments forming the vast landscape. In this study, we reconstruct the erosion rate of Germany. The numerical model solves river erosion, hillslope diffusion and 1D heat transfer to predict river profiles, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations and low-temperature thermochronological ages. The model algorithm utilizes the efficient inverse modelling scheme “Simulation-Based Inference”. Simulations of the inverse modelling use neural networks to learn the observed data in order to predict high-dimensional unknown parameters such as uplift and erodibility. River profiles extracted from a DEM are combined with pre-existing and new low-temperature thermochronological data as well as cosmogenic nuclide concentrations across entire Germany. We perform individual inverse modelling of the different types of datasets for the main catchments in Germany in order to estimate erosive parameters. Initial results suggest highly variable uplift and erodibility between the different catchments. Hence, further analyses have to be performed in order to combine the different results over a large-scale domain.
