Abstract:Water contamination is regarded as one of the world's worst tragedies owing to the continual depletion of water resources suitable for drinking and agriculture. Researchers have recently been interested in developing novel and more effective adsorbents for wastewater purification. We report herein a magnetic adsorbent nanomaterial for the removal of the anionic dye bromocresol green (BCG) from wastewater. The adsorbent is based on superparamagnetic iron oxide (cubic Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with a high-molecular-weight azo dye synthesized via diazo coupling of vitamin B1 with a trisubstituted benzene derivative. The proposed adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, vibrating sample magnetometry, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction crystallography. At room temperature and pH 2.0, the synthesized adsorbent showed an average particle size of 65.9 ± 8.0 nm, a high magnetization saturation (65.58 emu g −1 ), a high equilibrium adsorption capacity (36.91 mg g −1 ). Adsorption of BCG was found to take place via a physisorption mechanism and followed a pseudo-second-order rate kinetics. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process is enthalpy driven by hydrogen bonding and/or van der Waals interactions. After treating water samples with the suggested adsorbent, it can be easily removed from water using a strong external magnetic field.

Abstract:Water pollution by toxic substances, such as dye molecules, remains a major environmental problem that needs to be solved. In the present work, the magnetic composite hydrogel based on the poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylethan-1-aminium bromide-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymer with incorporated Fe3O4 particles ((poly(DMAEAB-co-NIPAm)@Fe3O4)) was prepared by an in situ synthesis technique for the efficient removal of dye molecules from water. The successfully synthesized magnetic hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, and TEM. The removal efficiency of the anionic dye bromophenol blue (BPB) and the cationic dye rhodamine B (RDM) by the prepared hydrogel adsorbents was evaluated. Various adsorption parameters, including the concentration of adsorbents and adsorption time, were also investigated. The results showed that the synthesized magnetic hydrogel had excellent BPB removal performance compared to the removal of RDM. The optimum adsorbent concentration for 0.5 mM BPB solution was approximately 0.5 g/L, and the removal efficiency was more than 99%. The kinetics data of BPB removal fitted well into the pseudo-2nd-order model, indicating that BPB dye adsorption involves chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. In addition, recycling studies were conducted to examine the reusability of the magnetic hydrogel for BPB removal for up to five cycles and the hydrogel could be reused without losing its high removal efficiency. The magnetic hydrogel poly(DMAEAB-co-NIPAm)@Fe3O4 with high removal efficiency, good selectivity, and reusability shows great potential for the removal of anionic dyes in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The magnetic Fe3O4/C core-shell nanoparticles have been synthesized by a simple strategy and used as adsorbents for removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution. The resulting products are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). Adsorption performances of the nanomaterial adsorbents are tested with removal of methylene blue (MB) and cresol red (CR) from aqueous solution. The effects of solution pH value, adsorption time and capacity of the nanocomposites have been fully investigated. The results reveal that the nanospheres can be easily manipulated by an external magnetic field with high separation efficiency. In addition, the process is clean and safe for purifying water pollution. The prepared Fe3O4/C complex nanomaterials could thus be used as promising adsorbents for the remove organic dyes, especially, cationic dye, from polluted water. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Enhanced adsorption of dye on magnetic Fe3O4 via HCl-assisted sonication pretreatment

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4 particles, which are uniquely superior in separation and recyclability, are widely applied in environmental remediation. However, the limited diffusion of Fe3O4 particles in aqueous solutions leads to a low adsorption rate and available capacity. Thus, a novel and simple method to enhance the adsorption ability of Fe3O4 particles via HCl-assisted sonication was proposed. The Fe3O4 particles, pretreated via HCl-assisted sonication, were found to have a positive effect for the removal of C. I. Reactive Blue 194 from a weak acid solution. We characterized the sorption and desorption on pretreated Fe3O4 particles to understand its availability for dyeing waste water treatment. Sorption of dye to pretreated Fe3O4 particles was fast (adsorption could reach equilibrium in less than 40min) in a wide pH range, and agreed well to the kinetics of pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir adsorption model. Meanwhile, after an effective regeneration with 0.1M H2O2 solution and sonication for an hour, the pretreated Fe3O4 remains good adsorption activity which could remain the dye removal rate about 90% after five recycles. Thus, using pretreated Fe3O4, which has high adsorption efficiency and strong magnetic property, was an efficient and environment friendly method for dyeing waste water treatment.

Abstract:Abstract Using an easy mechanical agitation process at room temperature, a metal–organic framework (MOF) based on metallic Zn( ii ), organic linker benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (Zn-BTC), Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, and nanocellulose are combined to create a novel composite material called Fe 3 O 4 /NC/MOF. Various tools were used to characterize the created composite. Congo red, Basic Blue 54 (BB 54), Basic Violet 14 (BV 14), and Acid red 88 (AR 88) dyes were effectively eliminated from water using Fe 3 O 4 /NC/MOF. A number of variables were investigated, including pH, temperature, contact time, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dosage. To understand the specific adsorption process, a number of kinetic models were used, including the intra-particle diffusion model, Elovich’s kinetic model, pseudo-first-order, and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The most accurate description of dye sorption kinetics comes from the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Also, the Langmuir model is more accurate to describe isotherms than Freundlich and Temkin models. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters were obtained and examined, including enthalpy (Δ H ), Gibbs free energy (Δ G ), and entropy (Δ S ). After four cycles, the Fe 3 O 4 /NC/MOF demonstrated good recyclability. According to experimental research, this adsorbent is promising to enhance the quality of environmental water that has been tainted with organic dyes.

Abstract:Water pollution is rising worldwide, necessitating innovative and effective treatment solutions. This study introduces a multicomponent/multifunctional novel nanocomposite synthesized from polyethyleneimine (PEI), graphene oxide (GO), bentonite clay, and MgFeAl-layered triple hydroxide (LTH), termed as AGO/Bentonite/LTH. In this study, the synthesized AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite was utilized to remove azo dyes (methyl orange and crystal violet) from contaminated water samples. The novel AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite was benchmarked against its pristine materials and their binary combinations. The results indicated the superior adsorption performance of the AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite relative to all other adsorbents synthesized and examined herein. All the synthesized adsorbents were characterized using different techniques in order to reveal their textural properties, functional groups, morphology, thermal stability, and crystallinity before applying them to decontaminate wastewater samples contaminated with methyl orange (MO) and crystal violet (CV). The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model predicted that the maximum adsorption capacities of CV and MO onto the AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite are 1705.1 and 1171.8 mg/g, respectively. On the other hand, zeta potential, pH, and FTIR studies suggested the existence of multiple mechanisms governing the adsorption of CV and MO onto the AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite. Thermodynamic results indicated the endothermicity and exothermicity of CV and MO adsorption, respectively. Another interesting finding reported herein is the high reusability of this nanocomposite as demonstrated by the minimal reduction in the removal of these two pollutants with the repetitive use of the nanocomposite. Additionally, the nanocomposite can also be easily and cheaply regenerated via a few rinses with a diluted NaOH aqueous solution. These interesting observations suggest that the synthesized AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite is a potent material for efficient dye removal from contaminated water bodies.

Abstract:Surface active magnetic materials having sutable anchoring moieties are of great interest in the fields of environmental pollution management. Here, 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) functionalized Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@DABA) nanoparticles were synthesized for adsorbing anionic pollutants from wastewater. First, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were fabricated using aqueous coprecipitation of Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions, and then, the bare-surface of Fe3O4 was functionalized concomitantly with DABA. The production of Fe3O4 particles and their surface functionalization with DABA, and thermal stability of Fe3O4@DABA were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gravimetrically. Core-Fe3O4 particles had spinel structure, and their concurrent surface-functionalization did not alter the initial phase-purity of Fe3O4 revealed by X-ray diffraction study. Fe3O4@DABA particles showed nano-sized, spherical-shaped, improved surface morphology, surface area, surface porosity, and pH-dependent surface activities. Fe3O4@DABA nanoparticles exhibited higher hydrodynamic average diameter and better aqueous dispersity than that of bare-Fe3O4. The saturation magnetization of Fe3O4@DABA was found to be 47 emu/g at ambient conditions. Our designed magnetic Fe3O4@DABA nanoadsorbent showed very high affinity towards the uptake of azo dye molecules: maximum adsorption of 259 mg/g for Congo red (CR) and 282 mg/g for Eosin yellow (EY) was reached at pH 3 and 25 °C by using an adsorbent dose of 0.02 g. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic study suggested both CR and EY adsorption followed the Freundlich adsorption model and pseudo-first-order kinetics. The adsorbed azo dye was eluted effectively from the surface of investigated nanoadsorbent by aqueous alkali (0.1 M NaOH) treatment. In addition, Fe3O4@DABA showed excellent magnetic recyclability without considerable loss of adsorption capacity. After recycling five-times, the adsorption efficiency of Fe3O4@DABA was slightly declined (90.16% for CR, and 95.52% for EY) than that of the initial adsorption.

Abstract:The jeopardy of the synthetic dyes effluents on human health and the environment has swiftly aggravated, threatening human survival. Hence, sustained studies have figured out the most acceptable way to eliminate this poisonous contaminant. Thereby, our investigation aimed to fabricate montmorillonite/magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 @amine-functionalized chitosan (MMT-mAmCs) composite as a promising green adsorbent to remove the cationic methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from the wastewater in neutral conditions. Interestingly, MMT-mAmCs composite carries high negative charges at a wide pH range from 4 to 11 as clarified from zeta potential measurements, asserting its suitability to adsorb the cationic contaminants. In addition, the experimental study confirmed that the optimum pH to adsorb both MB and CV was pH 7, inferring the ability of MMT-mAmCs to adsorb both cationic dyes in simple process conditions. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic behavior of the MMT-mAmCs composite is additional merit to our adsorbent that provides facile, fast, and flawless separation. Notably, the as-fabricated composite revealed an auspicious adsorbability towards the adsorptive removal of MB and CV, since the maximum adsorption capacity of MB and CV were 137 and 118 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the isotherm and kinetic investigatins depicted that the adsorption of both cationic dyes fitted Langmuir and Pseudo 2nd order models, respectively. Besides, the advanced adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics with maximal removal efficacy exceeding 87% after reuse for ten consecutive cycles. More importantly, MMT-mAmCs efficiently adsorbed MB and CV from real agricultural water, Nile river water and wastewater samples at the neutral pH medium, reflecting its potentiality to be a superb reusable candidate for adsorptive removal cationic pollutants from their aquatic media.

Abstract:Release of industrial effluents comprising dyes in water bodies is one of the foremost causes of water pollution. Therefore, the proper and proficient treatment of these dyes contaminated left-over material before their release is crucial. Herein, an eco-friendly biological macromolecule Gum-Acacia (GA) integrated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles composite hydrogel was manufactured via co-precipitation technique for effective adsorption of Congo red (CR) dye existing in water bodies. The as-prepared magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, XRD, EDX, VSM, SEM, and BET techniques. These studies discovered the fruitful fabrication of biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel possessing porous structure with large surface area (21.78 m 2 /g) and enough saturated magnetization value (24.5 emu/g) for the efficient elimination of CR. The magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel showed higher adsorption (96.3%) of CR as compared to pristine Fe 3 O 4 (45%) in 50 min at pH 6 with 0.02 g of adsorbent and 100 ppm CR. The data obtained from the adsorption of CR over GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel have a linear relationship, following the pseudo second-order kinetic model (R 2 =0.990) and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model (R 2 =0.983). The evaluated factors of thermodynamic recommended that the experiments were favourable, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature. In addition, the biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel also exhibited excellent desorption as well as recyclability owing to its amazing robust magnetic nature. What is more, the GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel reserved the same % adsorption proficiency (>96.3%) up to several repeated rounds, proving its potential applicability for water purgative at domestic plus industrial level.
Fabrication of carboxylic functionalized poly(methacrylic acid 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl ester)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles and their application for removing ionic dyes from polluted water

Abstract:The removal of dyes from wastewater that are released during industrial processes has become a significant concern in the environmental science in recent years. To tackle this issue, researchers are exploring the use of nanomaterials for designing new adsorbents. Another promising approach is to grow polymer brushes with high density functional groups via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), which can significantly enhance their ability to absorb dyes. The presence of carboxylic acid groups on the adsorbent material significantly contributes to its efficacy in dye removal by enhancing adsorption capacity, enabling selective adsorption, pH-dependent behavior, chelation, or complexation, and providing stability for repeated usage. In this work, a nanomaterial of carboxylic functionalized poly (methacrylic acid 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl ester)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH) was synthesized by the growth of PTBAEMA via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization, then reacted with succinic anhydride reaction. The chemical structure of MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH was confirmed using multiple methods, including FT-IR and DLS, and the core-brush morphology was observed clearly using TEM. MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH were subsequently employed to adsorb hazardous dyes efficiently. The anionic polymer brushes enabled the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and tetraethylrhodamine (TER) at optimum pH value of 3. The results also indicated that MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH possessed significant adsorption capacity (263.4 and 212.9 mg g-1 for MB and TER, respectively) and fast adsorption rate (within 15 min), which can be explained by the abundance of adsorptive polymer brushes and the small size of the nanoparticles. Overall, the findings indicate that MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH is a highly effective adsorbent material for eliminating dye pollutants from wastewater.
Humic acid functionalized magnetic nanomaterials for remediation of dye wastewater under ultrasonication: Application in real water samples, recycling and reuse of nanosorbents

Abstract:Water pollution by industrial sector is a great problem which hampers the sustainable development goals. Dye containing water effluent poses vast challenge to clean water before its discharge in to the surrounding ecosystem. Herein, we prepared humic acid functionalized Fe3O4 nanosorbents through an eco-friendly route and applied for decolorization of carcinogenic dye from water. The nanosorbents was characterized by AFM, BET surface area analyzer, FTIR, SEM-EDX, TEM, TGA/DTG, VSM and XRD. Adsorption experiments were conducted by taking the appropriate amount of dye in different sources of water under ultrasonication. Adsorption process was controlled by chemisorption in nature making pseudo-second-order model most suitable. Multilayer adsorption was taking place on the active sites of nanosorbents showing applicability of Freundlich isotherm model with highest adsorbed amount of 199.986 mg g-1 at 323 K. Rise in temperature favors the remediation of colored effluent thus positive value of ΔH° (74.234 kJ mol-1) and negative value of ΔG° shows endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption system. Cationic surfactant CTAB favors the adsorption (<80%) while anionic SDS gives very low removal (>48%) because of the micelle formation at the surface of nanosorbents. Decolorization from real water samples shows that the adsorption of malachite green was 97, 90, 91, 87, and 86% for Ganga river water, tap water, well water, hand pump water and submersible water, respectively. The used Fe3O4/HA nanosorbents was easily recycled from water samples through 0.1 M HCl and nanosorbents was used up to five cycles with greater percentage of removal at 85%.

Abstract:The present work aimed to highlight an efficient, readily accessible, and cost-effective adsorbent derived from Dalbergia sissoo (DS) leaf powder for removing the environmentally hazardous dye "alizarin red S" (ARS) from hydrous medium. A variant of the adsorbent is activated via sulfuric acid and composited with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (DSMNC). Both adsorbents are thoroughly characterized using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, point of zero charge, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, which show that they have a porous structure rich in active sites. Different adsorption conditions are optimized with the maximum removal efficiency of 76.63% for DS and 97.89% for DSMNC. The study was highlighted via the application of various adsorption isotherms, including Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich, to adsorption data. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were utilized to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of adsorption. The Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics exhibited the best fit, suggesting a combination of physical interactions, as confirmed by the D–R and Temkin models. The dominant adsorbate–adsorbent interactive interactions responsible for ARS removal were hydrogen bonding, dispersion forces, and noncovalent aromatic ring adsorbent pi-interactions. Thermodynamic parameters extracted from adsorption data indicated that the removal of the mutagenic dye "ARS" was exothermic and spontaneous on both DS and DSMNC, with DSMNC exhibiting higher removal efficiency.

Abstract:The use of magnetic nanomaterials (MNPs) as adsorbents to eliminate pollution causing dyes from water has attracted substantial attention in recent years because they can be easily isolated and reused. In this work, core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 MNPs in which magnetic Fe 3 O 4 NPs as a core enclosed with a thick SiO 2 shell were successfully synthesized by chemical co–precipitation followed by hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes in a mixture of ammonia, ethanol and water. The formation of core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 MNPs has been characterized by TEM, TEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR and VSM. TEM characterization revealed that several Fe 3 O 4 NPs (around 10 nm) aggregated to form a Fe 3 O 4 magnetic core and surrounded by an uniform SiO 2 shell of 40-50 nm thickness to obtain Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 magnetic core–shell NPs. As synthesized core–shell NPs were employed as adsorbent for elimination of two cationic toxic dyes, crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions. Further, different adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage and contact times of the dyes were found to enhance the adsorption of cationic dyes. At neutral pH 7 the cationic dyes could be speedily removed from aqueous solution with high efficiency. It has been observed that 0.35 g of adsorbent dosage is sufficient for 95% of dye removal efficiency. The contact time is optimised for 20 min for both the dyes. The Langmuir model adsorption isotherm is best suitable which indicates that the cationic dyes adsorption behaviour of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 is a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. The adsorptive binding of CV/MG with Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was directed through electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the magnetic adsorbents could be easily reused and regenerated with almost no adsorption capability is significantly reduced up to 5 cycles. So, the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 is an efficient and reusable adsorbent for rapid and removal of cationic dyes from the aqueous solution.

Abstract:The release of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and methylene blue (MB) dye into the aquatic system uncontrollably caused major environmental and health problems; hence, their prevention required serious attention. Adsorption process is now being researched in order to increase adsorption efficiency and reprocess to alleviate environmental issues. The use of magnetic nanoparticle as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment has a lot of prospective. A magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle surface modified by Vasaka ( Justicia adhatoda ) leaf extract (JA-MIONs) is used to give a fast removal approach for MB dye and TCH antibiotics. Dynamic light scattering, UV–Vis and band gap measurement, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were operated to analyse the formation and size of these magnetic nanoparticles. The impacts of different factors such as contact time (30–150 min), adsorbate concentration (10–50 mg/L), pH (4–10), and adsorbent dose (2–10 mg) were explored. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms show that it follows the pseudo-first-order kinetic and the Freundlich isotherm, with maximum adsorption capacities of 76.92 mg/g for MB and 200 mg/g for TCH at 298 K. The reusability of the JA-MIONs eventually exhibited a decline in the adsorption percentage of MB and TCH after five and four times respectively. After the desorption-adsorption cycles, this adsorbent continued to exhibit significant adsorption capacity. This investigation furnished the significant reference data for the synthesis of JA-MIONs as a novel and auspicious adsorbent for the industrial clean-up of toxic dyes and heavily used antibiotics from water.

Abstract:Water treatment is as much important as it is to satisfying 11 worldwide sustainable development goals out of 17. The removal of Azo is much important as they are toxic and their existence in water, air and food can easily affect humans by triggering allergies, forming tumours etc. Azo contained Dyes Production was banned in many countries. This research aims to synthesize composite Nanorods and Nanospheres and characterize and test to remove Azo dyes from the wastewater. This research used a previously reported method to rapidly synthesize chitin magnetite nanocomposites (ChM) by co-precipitation while irradiating with ultrasound (US). Detailed structural characterization of ChM revealed a crystalline phase analogous to magnetite and spherical morphologies; extending the reaction time to 8 min yielded a "nanorod" type morphology. Both the morphologies displayed a nanoscale limit with particles averaging between 5 and 30 nm in size, resulting the superparamagnetic performance and saturation magnetization values between 45 and 58 emu/g. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms showed that the surface modification of ChMs resulted in a rise of specific surface area and pore size. Anionic azo dyes (methyl orange (MO) and reactive black 5 (RB5)) adsorption on the surface of nanocomposites was also demonstrated to be pH-dependent, with the reaction favoured for surface-modified samples at pH 4 and unmodified samples at pH 8. Adsorption capacity studies showed that molecule size effect and electrostatic attraction were two distinct adsorption processes for unmodified and modified ChMs. Chitin Magnetite nanoparticles appear to be a substitute for traditional anionic dye adsorbents. Additionally, the two key materials sources, chitin, and magnetite are inexpensive and easily accessible.

Abstract:The presence of organic dyes in wastewater raises significant environmental and human health concerns, owing to their high toxicity. In light of this, a novel adsorbent material with porous cryogel architecture was developed and employed for the effective removal of organic dyes from an aqueous solution. Initially, a titanium dioxide nanowire doped with zirconium HZTO was synthesized by the hydrothermal process. Subsequently, the beads (SA/HZTO) of sodium alginate and HZTO were successfully prepared through a cross-linking process, employing Ca 2+ ions as the crosslinking agent. Structural analysis of SA/HZTO beads was performed using FTIR, SEM, and EDX techniques. We systematically examined the impact of different conditions, including the initial dye concentration, pH, contact time, and adsorbent dosage, on the adsorption process. Batch experiments, both in signal and binary systems, were conducted to rigorously assess the dye adsorption capabilities. Kinetic modeling revealed that the adsorption process adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Remarkably, the prepared beads exhibited impressive adsorption capacities of 26 and 29 mg/g toward methylene blue (MB) and safranin (SF), respectively. SA/HZTO beads have demonstrated excellent adsorption properties, offering a promising avenue for the development of low-cost, efficient, and reusable adsorbent to remove dyes from wastewater.

Abstract:AbstractDyes are noxious organic compounds released from different sources producing severe water pollution, thus imparting color to water consequently affecting ecosystem, terrestrial, as well as aquatic life and reducing transmission of sunlight through water. Several techniques have been used for wastewater treatment but adsorption has been proposed as a most effective and significant method for toxic dye removal from industrial wastewater. Low-cost and easily available biomass can be used for the wastewater treatment. The purpose of this study is to synthesize and use of cost-effective, eco-friendly, easily accessible, and magnetically modified nano-biosorbents of pine needles (MCPN) and banana peels (MCBP) for methylene blue dye adsorption from aqueous and industrial effluent. The characterization of prepared nano-composite in terms of structure, morphology, composition and thermal stability were well supported by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The adsorption experimentations were investigated in batch sorption mode to examine the influence of pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, concentration of dye, and temperature. The kinetics of the adsorption study followed the pseudo–second-order model while the adsorption isotherm data fitted well to the Temkin model for MCBP and the Freundlich model for MCPN. The thermodynamic parameters were measured and proposed that the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic, having increased randomness at the solid–liquid interface during the dye sorption. The adsorption capacity of MCPN equipped under optimized conditions for methylene blue was 1193 and 296.4 mg/g for MCBP. Moreover, the successful application in industrial effluent of MCPN showed more adsorption as compared to MCBP. In conclusion, research elucidated that magnetically modified biosorbents could be used to remove methylene blue dye from wastewater to improve water quality and overcome disposal problem and waste management in an eco-friendly way.

Abstract:The shortage of clean and safe water resources, due to the growing pollution and the high cost of water treatment techniques, has become a real threat. Herein, CuZnFe 2 O 4 @N,S-doped biochar (CZF@N,S-BC), a novel magnetic, cleaner, and completely green-based composite, was fabricated using the aqueous extract of Beta vulgaris (sugar beet) leaves for the efficient removal of reactive black dye 5 (RB5) from industrial wastewater discharge. With the aid of numerous techniques, including Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Spectroscopy (SEM), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), and zeta potential analyses, CZF@N,S-BC was well-characterized. The results revealed the successful fabrication of CZF@N,S-BC with good magnetic saturation of 12 emu/g and a highly positively charged surface of 32 mV at pH 2. The removal efficiency of RB5 was reached 96.5% at equilibrium time 60 min, and adsorbent dose of 80 mg. The equilibrium data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model, while the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model (PSO), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 276.57 mg/g. The thermodynamics results confirmed the physical interaction between the composite and RB5. Additionally, the composite also demonstrated exceptional reusability, maintaining a removal efficiency of 57.27% even after six consecutive cycles. To evaluate the performance of CZF@N,S-BC composite in a real water matrix, the composite was subjected to remove RB5 from a real wastewater sample obtained from an industrial discharge of a textile dyeing industry. Also, a plausible mechanism of RB5 removal by the composite was intensively discussed using XPS before and after adsorption.

Abstract:Intensive research efforts have been devoted to remove trace amounts of toxic pollutants such as Ni(II) and Co(II) from water with the intention to provide clean fresh water to households. Iron-based adsorbents have attracted attention in the field of water purification because of their low cost, non-toxicity, and high availability in nature. However, due to their small volume, the recovery of the superparamagnetic iron-based adsorbents after the removal process in acceptably short times remains an unresolved research question. In this paper, we describe the fabrication of environmentally-friendly and superparamagnetic iron-oxide supraparticles optimized for the adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions and dyes from water with high recovery (within 20 s). The super-adsorbent iron-oxide supraparticles exhibited excellent removal efficiencies for Pb(II), Cr(III), Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Li(I), and methylene blue (MB) with maximum adsorption capacities of 500, 446, 417, 366, 315, 294, 286, and 670 mg/g, respectively. Interestingly, the iron-oxide supraparticles with multicore structure revealed a higher saturation magnetization (72 Am 2 /kg) when compared to the as-synthesized iron-oxide nanoparticles (61 Am 2 /kg) that were used as starting material, facilitating fast recovery. The outstanding adsorption performance combined with the superparamagnetic properties and the high recovery demonstrates that low-cost iron-oxide supraparticles adsorbents can potentially be employed in water treatment and bioseparation.
