Abstract:The adsorption characteristics of Acid Orange 7(AO7) and Acid Orange 10 (AO10) from aqueous solutions onto the ethylenediamine-modified magnetic chitosan nanoparticles (EMCN) have been investigated. The EMCN were essentially monodispersed and had a main particle size distribution of 15-40 nm and saturated magnetization of 25.6 emu/g. The adsorption experiments indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity occurred at pH 4.0 for AO7 and pH 3.0 for AO10, respectively. Due to the small diameter and the high surface reactivity, the adsorption equilibrium of AO7 and AO10 onto the EMCN reached very quickly. Equilibrium experiments fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the EMCN at 298K was determined to be 3.47 mmol/g for AO7 and 2.25 mmol/g for AO10, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy change (ΔH°), free energy change (ΔG°) and entropy change (ΔS°) were estimated and the results indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. Furthermore, the EMCN could be regenerated through the desorption of the dyes in NH(4)OH/NH(4)Cl solution (pH 10.0) and could be reused to adsorb the dyes again.
In-Situ Preparation of Magnetic Chitosan Nanoparticles in Microemulsion System and Their Adsorption Properties for Dyes

Abstract:The magnetic chitosan nanoparticles(MCN) were in-situ prepared by adding the NaOH solution precipitant into a W/O microemulsion system containing cyclehexane/n-hexanol,chitosan,Fe2+/Fe3+ salts and Triton X-100.The MCN were then modified with ethylenediamine(EMCN) and used for the adsorption of Acid Orange 12(AO12) and Acid Orange 10(AO10).The adsorbents were characterized by TEM,XRD and FT-IR.The results show that EMCN are monodispersed,and have a particle size of 15 nm～40 nm and a saturation magnetization of 25.6 emu/g.The maximum adsorption occurred at pH 4.0 for AO12 and pH 3.0 for AO10,respectively.The adsorption was very quick with the equilibrium time of 40 min～60 min.The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm,and the saturation adsorption capacity was 2.81 mmol/g for AO12 and 1.82 mmol/g for AO10,respectively.The E values(14.95 kJ/mol～18.54 kJ/mol) calculated form D-R isotherm indicated that the chemisorption was predominant on the adsorption.The EMCN could be regenerated using NH4OH/NH4Cl solution(pH 10.0) as elution.
Bio-inspired magnetic chitosan/Iron oxide macromolecules for multiple anionic dyes adsorption from aqueous media

Abstract:Organic anionic dyes are major water pollutants due to their low degradability caused by complex aromatic structures. Not only do they exert toxic, mutagenic, teratogenic, tumorigenic, and genotoxic effects, but they also decrease fertility and cause irritation to the skin and respiratory system in humans. This long-term toxicity has detrimental effects on aquatic organisms and their surroundings, resulting in an imbalanced ecosystem. In this study, a Cs@Fe3O4 magnetic biosorbent was synthesised to uptake three anionic dyes and characterised for FTIR, BET/BJH, XRD, TGA, VSM, and FESEM analyses. The biosorbent average surface area was confirmed to be 52.6524 m2/g, with average pore sizes of 7.3606 nm and 6.9823 nm for adsorption-desorption processes, respectively. Batch adsorption studies pH values, contact times, temperature, initial dye concentrations, and adsorbent dosages were examined. Several isotherm and kinetic models were studied to determine the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption data of these dyes at equilibrium was observed to match Langmuir's isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption process for these dyes was an exothermic reaction. Maximum adsorption capacities for congo red, methyl orange, and metanil yellow were 117.77 mg/g, 137.77 mg/g, and 155.57 mg/g, respectively. The reusability of recovered Cs@Fe3O4 after dye adsorption was evaluated up to five continuous adsorption-desorption cycles for its possible industrial applications.

Abstract:Surface active magnetic materials having sutable anchoring moieties are of great interest in the fields of environmental pollution management. Here, 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) functionalized Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@DABA) nanoparticles were synthesized for adsorbing anionic pollutants from wastewater. First, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were fabricated using aqueous coprecipitation of Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions, and then, the bare-surface of Fe3O4 was functionalized concomitantly with DABA. The production of Fe3O4 particles and their surface functionalization with DABA, and thermal stability of Fe3O4@DABA were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gravimetrically. Core-Fe3O4 particles had spinel structure, and their concurrent surface-functionalization did not alter the initial phase-purity of Fe3O4 revealed by X-ray diffraction study. Fe3O4@DABA particles showed nano-sized, spherical-shaped, improved surface morphology, surface area, surface porosity, and pH-dependent surface activities. Fe3O4@DABA nanoparticles exhibited higher hydrodynamic average diameter and better aqueous dispersity than that of bare-Fe3O4. The saturation magnetization of Fe3O4@DABA was found to be 47 emu/g at ambient conditions. Our designed magnetic Fe3O4@DABA nanoadsorbent showed very high affinity towards the uptake of azo dye molecules: maximum adsorption of 259 mg/g for Congo red (CR) and 282 mg/g for Eosin yellow (EY) was reached at pH 3 and 25 °C by using an adsorbent dose of 0.02 g. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic study suggested both CR and EY adsorption followed the Freundlich adsorption model and pseudo-first-order kinetics. The adsorbed azo dye was eluted effectively from the surface of investigated nanoadsorbent by aqueous alkali (0.1 M NaOH) treatment. In addition, Fe3O4@DABA showed excellent magnetic recyclability without considerable loss of adsorption capacity. After recycling five-times, the adsorption efficiency of Fe3O4@DABA was slightly declined (90.16% for CR, and 95.52% for EY) than that of the initial adsorption.

Abstract:The quest for sustainable development and green chemistry had led to the design and synthesis of advanced adsorbent materials for efficient removal of pollutants in industrial effluents. Magnetic halloysite nanotubes with chitosan nanocomposite sponges were prepared by combining solution-mixing and freeze-drying. Magnetic@chitosan/halloysite (Fe3O4–HNT/CS) and spongelike chitosan/halloysite (HNT/CS) were used as adsorbents for the removal of Congo red dye in aqueous solution in a batch process. The as-prepared composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, vibrating-sample magnetometry, thermal gravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Data from kinetic study were analyzed with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, whereas the mechanism was analyzed using Bangham’s, Elovich’s, intraparticle, and double-exponential diffusion models. The equilibrium data were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The adsorption kinetics of dye removal followed the pseudo-first-order model with average rate constants of 0.260 and 0.196 min–1 for Fe3O4–HNT/CS and HNT/CS, respectively. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm best fitted the equilibrium data with R2 > 0.9 with maximum adsorption capacities of 41.54 and 54.49 mg g–1 obtained for HNT/CS and Fe3O4–HNT/CS, respectively. Negative values of ΔG° obtained from thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous. The values of ΔH° and ΔS° obtained for Congo red dye removal were 69.46 and 39.54 kJ mol–1 and 240.5 and 145.1 J mol–1 K–1 for HNT/CS and Fe3O4–HNT/CS, respectively. The results indicated that CS–HNT is an excellent adsorbent; however, its magnetic modification further improved its recyclability and enhanced the performance for the removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solution.

Abstract:The development of eco-friendly, large-capacity and easy-to-separate adsorbent materials has always been the focus and difficulty of adsorption technology in wastewater treatment applications based on the characteristics of dye wastewater. Therefore, in this study, a green magnetic glycine(Gly)-functionalized diatomite(Dia)/yttrium alginate (Y-SA) hybrid bead composite ( 3 O 4 ) was synthesized by the droplet polymerization, and characterized by various modern analytical techniques. The adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of the composite were evaluated and elucidated by the removal of anionic dyes direct Blue 106 (DB 106), Congo red (CR) and direct red 13 (DR 13) from water. The results show that the composite is a macroparticle gelpolymer with an average particle size of about 1.5 mm, flower-like fold surface structure, abundant porosity and sensitive magnetic response, and displays ultrastrong adsorption ability for three dyes. The adsorption equilibrium of each dye can be reached quickly within 30 min, and the removal efficiency is more than 95% at pH 2.0 and decreases slightly with pH up to 9.0. The adsorption processes could be explained by the Pseudo-second-order rate equation well. All isotherm data fitted the Langmuir model well, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 1635, 2359 and 1165 mg/g for DB 106, CR and DR 13 at 298 K, respectively. The ultrastrong adsorption performance was due to the multisite interaction of physicochemical action and various hydrogen bonds between hybrid beads and dye anions. As a cost-effective magnetic macroparticle adsorbent prepared by natural ingredients, 3 O 4 composite exhibits much more stronger adsorption efficiency, better collectability and no secondary pollution than powder Dia, and would have a good application prospect for the purification of anionic dye wastewater with a wide pH range.

Abstract:The development of environmentally friendly and low-cost adsorbents with high adsorption capacity remains a challenge. Herein, chitin nanofiber-polydopamine composite materials (CNDA) have been obtained by surface modification of chitin nanofiber using dopamine. According to the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), polydopamine have been successfully coated on the surface of chitin nanofiber (ChNF). The ability to remove methylene blue (MB) has been analyzed via standard adsorption experiments, indicating that the maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) can reach 196.6 mg/g at MB initial concentration of 50 mg/L. Most importantly, the adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics were used to investigate the MB adsorption mechanism on composites. This indicated that the polydopamine on the surface of chitin nanofiber (ChNF) plays an important role in the MB dye adsorption. Moreover, the removal ability of CNDA to metal ions has also been investigated, indicating high capacities for Fe 3+ , Mn 2+ , Cu 2+, and Ni 2+ . Based on their biodegradability and good adsorption capacity, the CNDA composite material can be considered a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, a kind of magnetically recyclable adsorbent for dyes was synthesized by grafting diethylenetriamine pentaacetate acid (DTPA) to the composite of Fe 3 O 4 microspheres and crosslinked chitosan (CS). The microstructures, molecular structure, crystal structure, and magnetic hysteresis loops of the chitosan matrix adsorbent before and after grafting was characterized. The results suggested that DTPA was covalent bonded with the composite of Fe 3 O 4 microspheres and chitosan. The modified composite has larger specific surface area and can realize rapid solid-liquid separation. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize the parameters affecting the adsorption of methyl orange (MO). The adsorption process could be better described by pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm equation, and its saturated adsorption capacity of the modified adsorbents was 1541.5 mg·g −1 at 25 °C, which was 1.40 times of that the unmodified adsorbent (1104.1 mg·g −1 ). The obtained values of the thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous process. The regeneration experiment proved the stability and reproducibility of the adsorbent even after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. The primary adsorption mechanism was electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The adsorbent could be potentially applied for removing dyes from wastewater in wide pH of range, especially acid wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, a kind of novel full biodegradable magnetic adsorbent based on glutamic acid modified chitosan and silica coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles was prepared successfully by a one-step method. The structure of the glutamic acid modified chitosan magnetic composite microspheres (CS-Glu-MCMs) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and equilibrium swelling experiment. Then, CS-Glu-MCM was employed as adsorbent for removal of three different kinds of cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and cationic light yellow 7GL (7GL), from aqueous solutions. Compared with chitosan magnetic composite microspheres (CS-MCMs) without modification, CS-Glu-MCM shows much higher dye uptakes. The fundamental adsorption experiments reveal that CS-Glu-MCM is more efficient in dye removal at pH higher than 5.0. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of CS-Glu-MCM are all well described by Langmuir model and the pseudo-second order model, respectively, which indicates that the dyes adsorption behavior of CS-Glu-MCM is a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. Furthermore, the magnetic adsorbents could be easily regenerated at lower pH and reused with almost no loss of adsorption capacity. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Magnetic powder MnO-Fe2O3 composite--a novel material for the removal of azo-dye from water.

Abstract:Fine powder adsorbents or catalysts often show better adsorptive or catalytic properties, but they encounter the difficulties of separation and recovery in application. In this study, four inexpensive magnetic powder MnO–Fe2O3 composites used as adsorbent–catalyst materials were prepared and characterized. These materials could be recovered efficiently by a magnetic separation method. Their adsorptive properties for the removal of an azo-dye, acid red B (ARB), from water and the regeneration of adsorbents containing ARB by catalytic combustion was studied. These powder adsorbents showed excellent adsorption towards ARB under acidic conditions. A very fast adsorption rate was observed and could be well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The adsorption capacity increased with increasing Fe content and surface area of the adsorbent, and the highest adsorption capacity of 105.3mg/g was obtained at pH 3.5. The adsorption was not affected by the presence of Cl−, but was significantly affected by SO42−. The adsorbent containing ARB can be regenerated by catalytic combustion of adsorbed ARB at 400°C in air. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that this material is reusable.

Abstract:In this research work, a hybrid organic–inorganic magnetic nanocomposite of magnetic chitosan-ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether/magnesium oxide (CS-EGDE/MgO/Fe 3 O 4 ) was prepared as a bioadsorbent material for dye wastewater treatment (reactive blue 19, RB 19). A response surface methodology (RSM) was adopted for the design of 29 experiments to investigate the effect of four factors [A: CS-EGDE/MgO/Fe 3 O 4 dose (0.02–0.1 g), B: pH (4–10), C: temperature (30–60 °C), and time D: (20–80 min)] related to the adsorption of RB 19. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model favourably describe the adsorption of RB 19 by CS-EGDE/MgO/Fe 3 O 4 . The CS-EGDE/MgO/Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite showed a maximum absorption capacity of 133.8 mg/g with the RB 19 dye at 45 °C. The adsorption mechanism for CS-EGDE/MgO/Fe 3 O 4 -RB 19 dye system involves electrostatic attraction, H- bonding, n-π interaction, and Yoshida H-bonding. This study supports that the nanocomposite system is an efficient bioadsorbent, which can be deployed for effective decontamination of water that contains acidic dye species.

Abstract:In this work, a magnetic chitosan/zinc oxide nanocomposite (CS/ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 ) was fabricated for efficient adsorptive removal of harmful aromatic micropollutants, including Cephalexin (CFX) antibiotic and Eosin B (EB) dye from wastewater samples. To maximize the adsorption efficiency of the CS/ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 , the adsorption process was first modeled and statistically optimized by using the response surface methodology based on central composite design (RSM-CCD). The results demonstrated that the maximum removal efficiency of the adsorbent for CFX and EB was 98.87% and 99.08%, respectively. Also, the adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics were also studied in detail under the optimum conditions. The results indicated that the adsorption equilibrium data was fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model, which indicated monolayer adsorption via chemisorption process. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (Q max ) was 81.38 mg g −1 and 144.4 mg g −1 for CFX and EB, respectively. The adsorption kinetic was followed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous, as well as that adsorption entropy was also increased during the process. Also, the main adsorption mechanism was considered to be based on H-bonding, n-π, and electrostatic interactions. The regeneration experiments indicated that the spent adsorbent was easily regenerated by NaOH solution (0.1 mol L −1 ) and reused for subsequent cycles without a significant decrease in its performance, so that removal efficiency remained about 90% at the fourth cycle. Overall, the results indicated that CS/ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 could be used as a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of aromatic micropollutants from wastewater.

Facile preparation and application of magnetic chitosan/fly ash composite as a hybrid biosorbent for the effective removal of direct dyes

Abstract:A novel magnetic chitosan (CTS)/fly ash (FA) hybrid composite (Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA) was fabricated and characterized by various analytical techniques, and directly used for anionic dye removal from water as a low-cost biosorbent. The effects of some key parameters on adsorption, adsorption mechanism and reusability of Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA were investigated. The results show that Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA with sensitive magnetic responsiveness and pore structure displays strong adsorption performance for Direct Blue 86 (DB 86) and Direct Black 19 (DB 19) dyes, and the matching adsorption capacities can reach 225 and 199 mg/g, which are approximately 8.1 and 6.3 times higher than that of FA. The dye removal efficiency is almost 100 % at pH 2.0 and 25°C, and still reach 91.6 and 95.1 % with increasing pH to 8.0, respectively. The Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models perfectly elucidate the spontaneous adsorption processes controlled by intraparticle diffusion and adsorption behaviour, respectively. Adsorption mechanism primarily involved electrostatic attraction, various H-bonding at multiple sites and n-π bonding. The dye-adsorbed composite can be rapidly and completely recovered from water by an external magnetic field and recycled at least three times. Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA would be a promising biosorbent with high cost-effectiveness, simplicity of preparation and implementation, easy recovery and reusability.

Abstract:Creating new adsorbents is crucial for removing contaminants from water due to increased industrialization, which has worsened water pollution in recent years. In this study, a magnetic biocomposite, Zirconium (Zr)-doped chitosan (CS)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs)-peanut husk (PH)-based activated carbon (AC) (Zr-CS/Fe3O4-NPs@PH-AC), was synthesized for efficient removal of alizarin red (AR) and congo red (CR) dyes, alongside antibacterial applications. Characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis revealed micropores and mesopores development due to chemical activation of PH biomaterial and Fe3O4-NPs addition. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified functional groups and structural properties. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) analyzed magnetic properties. Optimal conditions for AR/CR removal were determined, including Zr-CS/Fe3O4-NPs@PH-AC dose, dye dose, contact time, and temperature, achieving maximum removal percentages. Experimentally determined maximum adsorption capacities for AR and CR were 374.3 and 154.1 mg·g-1, respectively. Cytotoxicity studies affirmed the eco-friendly and non-toxic nature of the adsorbent by exhibiting the reduction in the cell viability from 100 % to 88.68 % from the 0 to 200 μg·L-1 respectively. Additionally, the biocomposite exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) due to magnetic NPs. The material in this study shows extreme compatibility for numerous applications.

Abstract:Wastewater containing highly toxic, non-biodegradable and carcinogenic organic dyes and metal ions has been regarded as a severe threat to ecological environment and human health. Thus, it is of great significance to develop an effective approach to purify this kind of wastewater. Herein, novel magnetic adsorbent FS@CS-PAA was facilely prepared by coating anionic polyacrylamide-modified chitosan (CS-PAA) on the surface of silica-combined Fe3O4 (FS). The morphology, structure, physic-chemical and magnetic properties of as-prepared FS@CS-PAA were fully characterized by various characterization techniques. Its adsorption behaviors towards cationic dyes and metal ions were systematically investigated in single systems, binary systems, and model wastewater. FS@CS-PAA was proved to have superior adsorption capacities of 2330.17 and 1044.06 mg g−1 respectively for crystal violet and methylene blue at 318.15 K, much higher than other reported adsorbents. Besides, FS@CS-PAA exhibited a pH-independent adsorption capability for metal ions, as demonstrated in single systems and in metal ion-dye binary systems, thus it could be used to treat a variety of metal ion wastewaters with different pH values. Moreover, FS@CS-PAA could be effectively and easily regenerated by HCl solution after the treatments of both synthetic wastewater and model wastewater. As revealed in FTIR and XPS analyses, the adsorption mechanism was mainly attributed to the electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, cation exchange and chelating effect. With its excellent adsorption capacity for cationic dyes, pH-independent adsorption capability for metal ions, easy separation ability, satisfactory stability and good reusability, FS@CS-PAA can become an ideal candidate for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The water solubility in acid solution, relative low adsorption capacities and unsatisfactory separation performance limit application of traditional chitosan-based adsorbents in wastewater treatment. To break the limitation, a hydrophilic magnetic Fe3O4 embedded chitosan-crosslinked-polyacrylamide composites (abbreviated as m-CS-c-PAM) were prepared by a two-step method. The m-CS-c-PAM composites were systematically characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, VSM, TGA and BET. Sunset yellow (SY) was selected as model food dye to investigate adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of food dye adsorption onto m-CS-c-PAM. Compared with magnetic Fe3O4/chitosan, m-CS-c-PAM can adapt to a wider range of pH (2-10) and resist the presence of inorganic salts. m-CS-c-PAM was proved to have high adsorption capacity (359.71 mg g-1) for SY dye at 298 K, much higher than magnetic Fe3O4/chitosan and many reported adsorbents. Moreover, m-CS-c-PAM could be rapidly and efficiently separated from treated solution within 15 s by an external magnet and regenerated by NaOH solution. With its excellent adsorption capacity, pH-independent adsorption capability for food dye, easy and convenient separation ability, satisfactory reusability, m-CS-c-PAM can be a promising material for food wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Abstract Overuse of organic dyes has caused serious threats to the ecosystem and human health. However, the development of high-efficient, environmentally friendly, selective, and degradable cationic dye adsorbents remains a huge challenge. In this work, a novel Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles doped silk fibroin-polyacrylamide magnetic hybrid hydrogel (Fe 3 O 4 @SF-PAAM) was successfully fabricated by combining free radical polymerization to prepare hydrogels and in situ co-precipitation to prepare nanoparticles. The obtained Fe 3 O 4 @SF-PAAM hydrogel shows strong magnetic performance with saturated magnetic of 10.2 emu mg −1 and excellent swelling properties with a swelling ratio of 55867%. In addition, Fe 3 O 4 @SF-PAAM can adsorb cationic dyes such as methylene blue (MB), crystal violet, and Rhodamine B, but has no adsorption effect on anionic dyes such as methyl orange, congo red, and carmine, indicating that Fe 3 O 4 @SF-PAAM has good selective adsorption properties for cationic dyes. Interestingly, the adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @SF-PAAM was approached 2025 mg g –1 for MB (MB, a typical cation dye) at 25 °C and neutral. Meanwhile, the hybrid hydrogel is reusable, the removal rate for MB is still over 90% after the five adsorption–desorption cycles. The fabricated magnetic hybrid hydrogel is a kind of a highly-efficiency and eco-friendly adsorbent and presents great potential applications in water purification and environmental protection.

Abstract:Water pollution by toxic substances, such as dye molecules, remains a major environmental problem that needs to be solved. In the present work, the magnetic composite hydrogel based on the poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylethan-1-aminium bromide-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymer with incorporated Fe3O4 particles ((poly(DMAEAB-co-NIPAm)@Fe3O4)) was prepared by an in situ synthesis technique for the efficient removal of dye molecules from water. The successfully synthesized magnetic hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, and TEM. The removal efficiency of the anionic dye bromophenol blue (BPB) and the cationic dye rhodamine B (RDM) by the prepared hydrogel adsorbents was evaluated. Various adsorption parameters, including the concentration of adsorbents and adsorption time, were also investigated. The results showed that the synthesized magnetic hydrogel had excellent BPB removal performance compared to the removal of RDM. The optimum adsorbent concentration for 0.5 mM BPB solution was approximately 0.5 g/L, and the removal efficiency was more than 99%. The kinetics data of BPB removal fitted well into the pseudo-2nd-order model, indicating that BPB dye adsorption involves chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. In addition, recycling studies were conducted to examine the reusability of the magnetic hydrogel for BPB removal for up to five cycles and the hydrogel could be reused without losing its high removal efficiency. The magnetic hydrogel poly(DMAEAB-co-NIPAm)@Fe3O4 with high removal efficiency, good selectivity, and reusability shows great potential for the removal of anionic dyes in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Magnetic composites have been widely used in the area of wastewater treatment, which own the properties of simple and quick adsorption and separation functions. This article presented a cost-effective and chemically modified adsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan) based on a novel facile light-assisted technique for methyl orange (MO) removal. The characterization results of FT-IR, TEM, XRD and the hysteresis loop showed that Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan was successfully prepared. The adsorption properties of the magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite had been discussed in detail. Results show that the magnetic composite was able to remove more than 99.15% of dyes in water under optimized conditions. The Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite was stable and easily recovered, which demonstrated that the Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan can be successfully used as a reusable absorbent for effective removal of methyl orange from wastewater.
