Abstract:Rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries have attracted worldwide attention due to the capability of CO2 capture and superhigh energy density. Here, phytic acid (PA)-cross-linked ruthenium complexes and melamine are used as precursors to design and synthesize RuP2 nanoparticles highly dispersed on N, P dual-doped carbon films (RuP2 -NPCFs), and the obtained RuP2 -NPCF is further applied as the catalytic cathode for Li-CO2 batteries. RuP2 nanoparticles that are uniformly deposited on the surface of NPCF show enhanced catalytic activity to decompose Li2 CO3 at low charge overpotential. In addition, the NPCF its with porous structure in RuP2 -NPCF provides superior electrical conductivity, high electrochemical stability, and enough ion/electron and space for the reversible reaction in Li-CO2 batteries. Hence, the RuP2 -NPCF cathode delivers a superior reversible discharge capacity of 11951 mAh g-1 , and achieves excellent cyclability for more than 200 cycles with low overpotentials (<1.3 V) at the fixed capacity of 1000 mAh g-1 . This work paves a new way to design more effective catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Li‐CO2 batteries have been recognized as an emerging technology for energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical specific energy and environmentally friendly CO2 fixation ability. However, their development for applications requires a high energy efficiency and long cycle‐life, this is currently limited to the formation of wide‐bandgap insulator Li2CO3 during discharge. Here, nanoparticle Pd supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is utilized as cathodes for Li‐CO2 batteries, Pd nanoparticles as active centers significantly enhance CO2RR/CO2ER reaction activity, which can support the fast formation and decomposition of Li2CO3 in organic electrolytes and achieve a high discharge capacity of 7500 mAh g‐1. It also performs remarkably high cycling stability of over 500 cycles with a long cycle‐life of 5000 hours. The observed super electrochemical performance is attributable to the thick electrode design and uniform distribution of ultrafine catalyst nanoparticle Pd. When Li2CO3 is adsorbed on Pd particle, the Li‐O bond in Li2CO3 will be elongated due to the interactions of two nucleophilic O atoms with Pd, resulting in a weakening of the Li‐O bond and activation of Li2CO3. Our work suggests a way to design catalysts with high activity that can be used to activate the performance of Li‐CO2 batteries.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of nanostructured hybrid CoO/Cu electrodes through electrodeposition and sputtering. When applied as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the CoO/Cu nanowire arrays deliver long cycle life and enhanced power performance than CoO/Cu films. The large accessible surface area and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Recently, Li-CO2 battery has gradually become a research hotspot due to its high discharge capacity, energy density and environmental benefits. However, it has been an important problem for researchers because of its slow decomposition kinetics and difficult to generalize to practical application. Herein, we prepared copper polyphthalocyanine-carbon nanotubes composites (CuPPc-CNTs) by solvothermal in-situ polymerization of copper phthalocyanine on the surface of carbon nanotubes as cathode for reversible Li-CO2 batteries, which exhibits a high discharge capacity of 18,652.7 mAh·g−1 at current density of 100 mA·g−1, 1.64 V polarization at 1,000 mA·g−1, and a stable cycles number of 160 is close to 1,630 h of charge-discharge process at 200 mA·g−1. Copper polyphthalocyanine has highly efficient copper single-atom catalytic sites with excellent CO2 adsorption and activation, while carbon nanotubes provide a conductive network. The synergistic effect of the two compounds enables it to have excellent catalytic activity. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation proved that the addition of copper polyphthalocyanine significantly improved the CO2 adsorption and activation process. This study provides an opportunity for the research of covalent organic polymers (COPs) single-atom catalyst in Li-CO2 battery field.

Abstract:The development of Li-S batteries is greatly hindered by the polysulfide shuttling and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, leading to low utilization of active materials and rapid capacity decay. Herein, a freestanding multifunctional interlayer, prepared by layer-by-layer assembling of the single-atom cobalt-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NC@SA-Co) and dual network of carbon nanotube-cellulose nanofiber (CNT-CNF) hybrid, is proposed to effectively enhance the polysulfide immobilization and sulfur redox kinetics. The conductive CNT network acts as the physical barrier to confine the polysulfide diffusion and to facilitate the reuse of polysulfides. The oxygen-group-terminated CNF network allows the hopping of Li+ ion and suppresses the polysulfide crossover due to the strong electrostatic repulsion. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the 2D NC@SA-Co with numerous well-defined single sites of Co-N-4 can effectively serve as an electrocatalyst to boost the reversible reaction of polysulfides. As a result, the assembled Li-S batteries with the multifunctional interlayer deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 1160 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and an ultralow capacity decay of 0.058% per cycle over 700 cycles. Even with a high sulfur loading of 7.2 mg cm(-2), a high areal capacity of 8.3 mAh cm(-2) can be achieved.

Abstract:IrRu/N‐CNTs cathode catalyst is first reported in Li–CO2 electrochemistry and battery. Long cycle life of Li–CO2 battery is assisted by double catalytic mechanism. The catalytic mechanism is induced by alloyed Ir–Ru dual catalytic sites, which effectively modifies its electronic structures and shortens the electron transfer pathway. Such excellent cycling performance with bimetallic catalysts is first achieved in Li–CO2 battery. Owing to the ingenious utilization of CO2 conversion electrochemistry, rechargeable Li–CO2 batteries, have attracted more and more attention. However, the large potential polarization resulting from the sluggish CO2 reduction/evolution electrochemistry degrades energy efficiency and cycling performance. One possibility to break the kinetic bottlenecks of ‐Li–CO2 batteries is to design high‐efficiency catalysts with flexible geometric and electronic structures. Herein, an efficient synergistic catalyst with unique alloyed dual catalytic sites composed of uniformly ultrafine Ir–Ru alloyed nanoparticles modified nitrogen‐doped carbon nanotube composite (denoted as IrRu/N‐CNT) is synthesized. Combining the synergistic effect between the remarkably enhanced catalytic activity of Ir–Ru dual catalytic sites, the Li–CO2 battery delivers a high discharge capacity of 6228 mAh g−1 and outstanding stability over 7660 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results uncover that the excellent electrochemical performance is ascribed to the novel dual catalytic sites on the surface of IrRu nanoalloys, which effectively modify its electronic structures and shorten the electron transfer pathway, leading to the deposition of film‐like Li2CO3 products. This study highlights the novel view of building a dual catalytic site and provides some new insights for understanding the catalytic mechanism of an alloying‐type bifunctional catalyst toward realizing high‐performance Li–CO2 batteries.

Abstract:The reaction mechanism of non-aqueous Li-O2 batteries is based on the deposition and decomposition of Li2O2. The polarization of Li-O2 batteries can be rapidly increased by operation under a high rate condition, resulting in the early capacity fade of the cells. Therefore, a well-designed catalyst with a unique structure and excellent catalytic ability is an important way to boost the round-trip performance of Li-O2 batteries, especially under high current density. In this work, a unique nanoflower structure assembled with Co3O4 nanosheets is synthesized by using 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) as a structural directing agent. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectra reveal abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of the Co3O4 nanoflower, which are beneficial for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions and long round-trip lifetime. Density functional theory results demonstrate that Co3O4 catalyst with oxygen vacancies could promote the wetting of Li2O2 on substrate and formation of a Li2O2 nanofilm, thereby boosting the discharge capacity of Li-O2 batteries. On account of the synergistic effect of abundant oxygen vacancies, the unique structure, and excellent oxygen evolution reaction, Co3O4 nanoflower-based cells could deliver ultralong lifetime of 276 and 248 cycles with a discharge capacity of 1000 mAh g−1 under charge/discharge current densities of 0.5 A g−1 and 1 A g−1, respectively. This study has shed light on a new strategy for catalyst preparation for long lifetime Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:The Li-CO2 batteries are concerned as a potential energy conversion and storage system which can not only effectively capture CO2 gas but also offer a high energy density. Therefore, they can be widely used in CO2-enriched environments such as submarine operations. However, the development of Li-CO2 batteries is still restricted by the high polarization and poor cycle performance mainly due to the insulating discharge product, e.g., Li2CO3. Herein, the Mn2Co2C nanoparticles dispersed in interconnected nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks (Mn2Co2C@NC), obtained by pyrolyzing MnCo Prussian blue analogous (MnCo-PBA), are first utilized as the cathode materials in Li-CO2 batteries. The batteries deliver a high discharge capacity (18962 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1), the lowest overpotential (1.47 V), and the best cycle performance (330 cycles, close to 1800 h, with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1). The good cycling stability under 200 mA g−1 is more prominent for current Li-CO2 batteries. The superior performance of Mn2Co2C@NC is ascribed to abundant catalytic sites of Mn/Co-nitrogen-carbon (Mn/Co-NC) and nitrogen-doped carbon, which have outstanding adsorption and activation effects on CO2. Meantime, the robust interconnected carbon framework provides fast electron/electrolyte transport paths and a large deposition space of Li2CO3. The density functional theory calculations reveal the strong adsorption of Li+ and CO2, strong catalytic performance for CO2 reduction, and excellent electrical conductivity of the Mn/Co-NC and nitrogen-doped carbon active sites. Finally, when combining a gel electrolyte, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time the fabricated quasi-solid-state Li-CO2 batteries demonstrate good cycling stability with high deliverable specific discharge capacity, highlighting its great potential for the applications of flexible and wearable batteries.

Abstract:The sluggish reaction kinetics and unfavorable shuttling effect are regarded as obstacles to the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. To resolve these inherent drawbacks, we synthesized novel multifunctional Co 3 O 4 @NHCP/CNT as the cathode materials consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-grafted N -doped hollow carbon polyhedrons (NHCP) embedded with cobalt (II, III) oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles. The results indicate that the NHCP and interconnected CNTs could provide favorable channels for electron/ion transport and physically restrict the diffusion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). Furthermore, N doping and in-situ Co 3 O 4 embedding could endow the carbon matrix with strong chemisorption and effective electrocatalytic activity toward LiPSs, thus prominently promoting the sulfur redox reaction. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the Co 3 O 4 @NHCP/CNT electrode exhibits a high initial capacity of 1322.1 mAh/g at 0.1 C, and a capacity retention of 710.4 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 1 C. Impressively, even at a relatively high current density of 4 C, the Co 3 O 4 @NHCP/CNT electrode achieves a high capacity of 653.4 mAh/g and outstanding long-term cycle stability for 1000 cycles with a low decay rate of 0.035% per cycle. Hence, the design of N -doped CNTs-grafted hollow carbon polyhedrons coupled with transition metal oxides would provide effective promising perspective for developing high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:To achieve a long-cycle-life lithium-air battery, the catalyst, electrolyte and lithium anode should be optimized synergistically. Herein, we achieve a super-long cycle-life lithium-O-2 battery by integrating the synergistic effect of highly active Pt3Co nanowires (PtCo NWs) cathode catalyst and stable quasi-solid SiO2-ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte. The PtCo NWs can effectively reduce the charge voltage below 3.2 V, but have to induce the decomposition of the conventional liquid electrolyte. The SiO2-IL electrolyte has a high ionic conductivity, but it still cannot match with carbonaceous oxygen electrode, due to its large charge overpotential. By combining the PtCo NWs cathode catalyst with quasi-solid electrolyte, the lithium-O-2 battery can reversibly discharge and charge above 300 cycles (>3000 h). When the battery is disassembled, the lithium metal anode is preserved well, which is closely covered by a layer of SiO2 nanoparticles containing IL. By contrast, the lithium anode completely changes to the white powders for the one with ether-based electrolyte stored under the same condition, demonstrating the lithium anode is perfectly protected by the SiO2-IL electrolyte, which is a critical factor for achieving the long-life performance of lithium-O-2 battery. Even under the air atmosphere, the battery can still cycle very well.
Intermetallic-driven highly reversible electrocatalysis in Li–CO2 battery over nanoporous Ni3Al/Ni heterostructure

Abstract:Li–CO2 batteries, which integrate CO2 utilization and electrochemical energy storage, offer the prospect of utilizing a greenhouse gas and providing an alternative to the well-established lithium-ion battery. However, they still suffer from rather limited reversibility, low energy efficiency, and sluggish CO2 redox reaction kinetics. To address these key issues, a nanoporous Ni3Al intermetallic/Ni heterojunction (NP-Ni3Al/Ni) is purposely engineered here via an alloying–etching protocol, whereby the unique interactions between Al and Ni in Ni3Al endow NP-Ni3Al/Ni with optimum reactant/product adsorption and thus unique catalytic performance for the CO2 redox reaction. Furthermore, the nanoporous spongy structure benefits mass transport as well as discharge product storage and enables a rich multiphase reaction interface. In situ Raman studies and theoretical simulations reveal that both CO2 reduction and the co-decomposition of Li2CO3 and C are distinctly promoted by NP-Ni3Al/Ni, thereby greatly improving catalytic activity and stability. NP-Ni3Al/Ni offers promising application potential in Li–CO2 batteries, with its scalable fabrication, low production cost, and superior catalytic performance.

Abstract:Li-CO2 batteries have attracted wide attention owing to their high energy density and ability to utilize carbon dioxide. However, current Li-CO2 batteries still suffer from several unresolved problems such as low coulombic efficiency and high charge potential, and hence much work is still required to optimize the electrochemical performance of Li-CO2 batteries. In this work, Ru nanoparticles have been deposited on Super P carbon using a solvothermal method and the resulting material (Ru@Super P) has been employed as a cathode in Li-CO2 batteries. The Li-CO2 battery with Ru@ Super P as the cathode exhibits significantly reduced charge potential and can be operated for 80 cycles with a fixed capacity of 1000 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), which is by far the best cycling stability among the reported Li-CO2 batteries. We found that Ru possesses a selective catalytic activity in promoting the reaction between Li2CO3 and carbon during charge. This characteristic of Ru helps to avoid electrolyte decomposition and improve the electrochemical performance of Li-CO2 batteries.
Ultrafine Ru nanoparticles anchored on N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon spheres as a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst for Li–CO 2 batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable Li–CO 2 battery is a facilitative and promising device for the conversion of CO 2 to electrochemical energy. However, it remains a challenge to enhance the sluggish decomposition kinetics of lithium carbonate as the discharge product. Herein, the Ru nanoparticles anchored on N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon nanospheres (Ru-AHCNs) are designed as cathode to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li–CO 2 battery. The Ru-AHCNs cathode displays a high discharge specific capacity of 11194.4 mA h g −1 at the current density of 100 mA g −1 . In addition, the Ru-AHCNs cathode can stably run over 50 cycles and maintain a small overpotential (<1.38 V) with a limited capacity of 1000 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 . The excellent stability and catalytic activity of the cathode are ascribed to the following factors: (i) Uniform deposition of Ru nanoparticles in hollow carbon nanospheres can enhance the decomposition of Li 2 CO 3 and provide considerable exposure to active sites. (ii) N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon nanospheres can provide abundant electron transport channels and promote the nucleation of discharge products. These results evidently prove the reversible formation and decomposition of the discharge products, indicating that Ru-AHCNs cathode possesses excellent bifunctional catalytic activity.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum–Sulfur (Al–S) batteries are regarded as promising energy storage devices due to their high energy‐to‐price ratios and safety. However, they suffer from clumsy S ↔ Al 2 S 3 reactions and short lifespans that limit their practical application. By combining the merits of adsorptive Cu, catalytic Co, and conductive N‐doped carbon matrix, the bimetals decorated N‐doped carbon (Cu 1 Co 1 @NC) enables smooth adsorption and conversion of polysulfides. Consequently, the S@Cu 1 Co 1 @NC exhibits excellent electrochemical performance (delivering a high capacity of 317.5 mAh g −1 after 320 cycles at 1.5 A g −1 ). Moreover, the Cu‐endowed strong Al affinity and robust 3D scaffold with Co‐enhanced conductivity can regulate Al 3+ depositing/stripping and successfully suppress Al dendrites. As a result, the Cu 1 Co 1 @NC displays negligible Al nucleation overpotential and provides ultra‐long lifespan (>10 000 h) and exceptional reversible (Coulombic efficiency = 99.8–99.9%) Al 3+ plating/stripping. Integrating all these advantages, a full Al–S cell constructed with Cu 1 Co 1 @NC as two‐in‐one hosts demonstrates excellent capacity retention with enhanced reversibility. This work provides insights into the design of promising Al–S batteries based on bifunctional CuCo bimetal and favorable 3D framework.

Abstract:Integrating CO2 utilization and renewable energy delivery/storage, the rechargeable Li–CO2 battery has been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation secondary batteries. However, high-performance catalyst(s) for efficient formation and decomposition of the discharge product, Li2CO3, are an imperative part of a Li–CO2 battery. The development of flexible Li–CO2 batteries extends their applications into compliant and wearable devices/systems, but at the same time imposes a big challenge for battery fabrication and lifetime enhancement. In this study, a rechargeable quasi-solidus flexible Li–CO2 battery was designed and fabricated using highly active N,S-doped carbon nanotubes (N,S-doped CNTs) as the cathode catalyst, and a smart polymer gel as the flexible electrolyte. This newly-developed flexible Li–CO2 battery exhibited a capacity as high as 23560 mAh g−1 based on the catalyst mass and an ultra-long lifetime of up to 538 cycles with excellent mechanical flexibility. This work provides a platform for the design and development of high-performance flexible Li–CO2 batteries from low-cost, earth-abundant, carbon-based multifunctional cathode catalysts.
Electron redistributed Ni-Co oxide nanoarray as an ORR/OER bifunctional catalyst for low overpotential and long lifespan Li-O2 batteries

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries with extra-high energy density attracted increasing attention. However, their development is limited by sluggish oxygen redox kinetics, resulting in large overpotential and low cyclic life. Herein, N-NiCoO2/CoO array on conductive carbon cloth (noted as NNCO/CC) is designed by a hydrothermal and nitriding method as an ORR/OER bifunctional catalyst for LOBs cathode to alleviate the problem. The introduction of N promotes electron redistribution on bimetal sites, which can enhance the affinity of intermediate (O*, LiO2*, Li2O2*) and induce deposition/decomposition of flake-like amorphous Li2O2. Based on NNCO/CC cathode, Li-O2 cells exhibit a low overpotential of 0.35 V and improved cycling capability over 500 cycles at 0.05 mA cm-2. The cycle stability could be maintained over 225 cycles with a limited capacity of 0.2 mAh cm-2. DFT calculations further disclose that NNCO/CC shows a synergistic role in the ORR and OER reactions. N-NiCoO2 has a more vital adsorption ability towards key intermediates (LiO2*) in the ORR process, and N-CoO has a slight reaction energy barrier in the OER process. The method of regulating the electronic structure of bimetallic oxides to promote synergy in the redox reactions opens up new paths for the functional cathode design of Li-O2 cells.

Abstract:The increasing demand for lithium-ion battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) has led to a surge in recent prices of strategic battery materials such as cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni). While all EV makers are eager to eliminate Co usage, Ni has rapidly become another 'pain point' for the industry, as its price is nearing half that of Co. The sustainability issue facing both Ni and Co puts forward a grand materials challenge, that is, to reduce Ni content and eliminate Co while maintaining high specific energy and stability. In this work, a complex concentrated doping strategy is used to eliminate Co in a commercial NMC-532 cathode. The LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.43 Ti 0.02 Mg 0.02 Nb 0.01 Mo 0.02 O 2 cathode shows potential cost advantage with relatively high specific energy and significantly improved overall performance (~95% capacity retained after 1,000 cycles in pouch-type cells, 2.8–4.3 V vs graphite, at 1 C, 1.5 mA cm − 2 ). Combining X-ray techniques and electron microscopy, we uncover the origins of the superior stability.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc–air batteries have been extensively studied as a potential solution for overcoming the challenges of energy crises and achieving sustainable development. The primary bottleneck of zinc–air batteries is the lack of efficient and low-cost dual-functional catalysts. In this study, we successfully prepared carbon nanotube-encapsulated bimetallic Co/Cu (Co/Cu 0.2 @NC) catalysts that exhibit excellent ORR ( E 1/2 = 0.838 V) and OER (overpotential of 322 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) performances, exceeding those of the commercial RuO 2 and Pt/C catalysts. Furthermore, rechargeable liquid zinc–air batteries prepared using the Co/Cu 0.2 @NC catalysts show a high power density (171.44 mW cm −2 ), a high open circuit voltage (1.485 V), and a long life with stability for 2400 cycles (or 400 h). More importantly, flexible zinc–air batteries prepared using this catalyst exhibit a peak power density of 70.8 mW cm −2 and a superior stability for 480 cycles (or 80 h). This excellent dual-functional catalyst has great potential for zinc–air battery and other energy storage applications.

Abstract:Aprotic Li-CO2 batteries suffer from sluggish solid-solid co-oxidation kinetics of C and Li2CO3, requiring extremely high charging potentials and leading to serious side reactions and poor energy efficiency. Herein, we introduce a novel approach to address these challenges by modulating the reaction pathway with tailored Pt d-electrons and develop an aprotic Li-CO2 battery with CO and Li2CO3 as the main discharge products. Note that the gas-solid co-oxidation reaction between CO and Li2CO3 is both kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable. Consequently, the Li-CO2 batteries with CoPt alloy-supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber (CoPt@NCNF) cathode exhibit a charging potential of 2.89 V at 50 μA cm-2, which is the lowest charging potential to date. Moreover, the CoPt@NCNF cathode also shows exceptional cycling stability (218 cycles at 50 μA cm-2) and high energy efficiency up to 74.6%. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the lowered d-band center of CoPt alloy effectively promotes CO desorption and inhibits further CO reduction to C. This work provides promising insights into developing efficient and CO-selective Li-CO2 batteries.
