Abstract:Taking the generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (GTHO) and singular time-dependent harmonic oscillator (STHO) as illustrative examples, we discuss the connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem and, for the system, find: (1) The classical basic invariants and general form of classical invariants. (2) The current algebra and corresponding operator algebra. (3) A kind of converse of the Noether's theorem. (4) The connection between the so-called symmetry algebra ({G(k)} algebra) and the classical current algebra through the operator algebra.

Abstract:We show that the classical Hamilton equations of motion can be derived from the energy conservation condition. A similar argument is shown to carry to the quantum formulation of Hamiltonian dynamics. Hence, showing a striking similarity between the quantum formulation and the classical formulation. Furthermore, it is shown that the fundamental commutator can be derived from the Heisenberg equations of motion and the quantum Hamilton equations of motion. Also, that the Heisenberg equations of motion can be derived from the Schrödinger equation for the quantum state, which is the fundamental postulate. These results are shown to have important bearing for deriving the quantum Maxwell’s equations.

Abstract:In this paper, the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (DGTHO) is studied by making use of the new concept of quantum basic invariants. The connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem is discussed. The classical basic invariants as well as the general form of classical invariants for the system are found. From these, we get the five Noether invariants and the set of corresponding infinitesimal generators {G(k)}, hence, generalizing the work of G. Profilo and G. Soliani. Also, for the system, we calculate the current algebra which, as the central extension of the {G(k)} algebra, should be regarded as the dynamical symmetry algebra for the system and is therefore more important than the {G(k)} algebra. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of a kind of converse of Noether's theorem.

Abstract:In this work, quantization of electromagnetic fields in a general anisotropic inhomogeneous media is considered. First, the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Once the Hamiltonian is derived, with it the classical equations of motion follow. Next, the fields are elevated to become quantum operators, for which conjugate pairs are endowed with commutators. Since as previously shown, such commutators induce functional derivatives, the quantum equations of motion can be easily derived. Next, the mode decomposition of the fields is demonstrated. Upon substitution into the classical Hamiltonian, each mode then behaves like a simple harmonic oscillator. These oscillators can then be elevated to become quantum harmonic oscillators. Both the traveling wave modes and the standing wave modes are discussed. Furthermore, the longitudinal modes are described. Finally, the case of impressed sources are considered, with the corresponding Hamiltonian and field quantization. The Green's functions for the linear system are presented. Finally, the quantum Maxwell's equations are derived. A short discussion on field-atom interaction is given.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate how the Legendre transform connects the statements of Noether's theorem in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics. We give precise definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities in both the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian frameworks and discuss why these notions in the Hamiltonian framework are somewhat less rigid. We explore conditions which, when put on these definitions, allow the Legendre transform to set up a one-to-one correspondence between them. We also discuss how to preserve this correspondence when the definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities are less restrictive.

Abstract:We point out that two of the most important theorems of Quantum Mechanics, the Ehrenfest theorem and the Hellmann-Feynman theorem, lack in their standard form important information: there are cases where non-Hermitian boundary contributions emerge. These contributions actually appear naturally, in order for the above theorems to be valid and applicable (i.e. in multiply-connected spaces), and this occurs for physical quantities that are not represented by well-defined self-adjoint operators (such as the position operator in a periodic potential, or in general Aharonov-Bohm configurations, either in real or in an arbitrary parameter-space, in the sense of Berry's adiabatic and cyclic procedures). In this short note, we report modifications of these two theorems when such non-Hermiticities appear, and we demonstrate how they resolve certain Quantum Mechanical paradoxes (most of them having been noticed in the past as violations of the so-called Hypervirial theorem in Quantum Chemistry). This resolution of paradoxes (essentially the re-establishment of applicability of the Ehrenfest theorem even in multiply-connected spaces) always proceeds through the appearance of certain generalized currents, in a theoretical picture with interesting structure (where a generalized continuity equation with a sink term shows up naturally).

Abstract:It is shown that when the gauge-invariant Bohr-Rosenfeld commutators of the free electromagnetic field are applied to the expressions for the linear and angular momentum of the electromagnetic field interpreted as operators then, in the absence of electric and magnetic charge densities, these operators satisfy the canonical commutation relations for momentum and angular momentum. This confirms their validity as operators that can be used in quantum mechanical calculations of angular momentum.

Abstract:Despite the fact that it has been known since the time of Heisenberg that quantum operators obey a quantum version of Newton's laws, students are often told that derivations of quantum mechanics must necessarily follow from the Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formulations of mechanics. Here, we first derive the existing Heisenberg equations of motion from Newton's laws and the uncertainty principle using only the equations $F=\frac{dP}{dt}$, $P=m\frac{dV}{dt}$, and $\left[X,P\right]=i$. Then, a new expression for the propagator is derived that makes a connection between time evolution in quantum mechanics and the motion of a classical particle under Newton's laws. The propagator is solved for three cases where an exact solution is possible 1) the free particle 2) the harmonic oscillator 3) a constant force, or linear potential in the standard interpretation. Such a picture may be useful for students as they make the transition from classical to quantum mechanics and help solidify the equivalence of the Hamiltonian, Lagrangian, and Newtonian formulations of physics in their minds.

Quantization of a New Canonical, Covariant, and Symplectic Hamiltonian Density

Abstract:We generalize Koopman-von Neumann classical mechanics to poly-symplectic fields and recover De Donder-Weyl theory. Comparing with Dirac's Hamiltonian density inspires a new Hamiltonian formulation with a canonical momentum field that is Lorentz covariant with symplectic geometry. We provide commutation relations for the classical and quantum fields that generalize the Koopman-von Neumann and Heisenberg algebras. The classical algebra requires four fields that generalize space-time, energy-momentum, frequency-wavenumber, and the Fourier conjugate of energy-momentum. We clarify how 1st and 2nd quantization can be found by simply mapping between operators in classical and quantum commutator algebras.

Abstract:We demonstrate that when there is spontaneous symmetry breaking in any system, relativistic or non-relativistic, the dynamic of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons is governed by the Quantum Yang-Baxter equations. These equations describe the triangular dynamical relations between pairs of Nambu-Goldstone bosons and the degenerate vacuum. We then formulate a theorem and a corollary showing that these relations guarantee the appropriate dispersion relation and the appropriate counting for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:In this paper a generalization of Weyl quantization which maps a dynamical operator in a function space to a dynamical superoperator in an operator space is suggested. Quantization of dynamical operator, which cannot be represented as Poisson bracket with some function, is considered. The usual Weyl quantization of observables can be derived as a specific case of suggested quantization if dynamical operator is an operator of multiplication on a function. This approach allows to define consistent Weyl quantization of non-Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. Examples of the harmonic oscillator with friction and a system which evolves by Fokker-Planck-type equation are considered.

Considerations about the incompleteness of the Ehrenfest's theorem in quantum mechanics

Abstract:We describe a study motivated by our interest to examine the incompleteness of the Ehrenfest's theorem in quantum mechanics and to resolve a doubt regarding whether or not the hermiticity of the hamiltonian operator is sufficient to justify a simplification of the expression of the macroscopic-observable time derivative that promotes the one usually found in quantum-mechanics textbooks. The study develops by considering the simple quantum system "particle in one-dimensional box". We propose theoretical arguments to support the incompleteness of the Ehrenfest's theorem in the formulation he gave, in agreement with similar findings already published by a few authors, and corroborate them with the numerical example of an electric charge in an electrostatic field. The contents of this study should be useful to Bachelor and Master students; the style of the discussions is tailored to stimulate, we hope, the student's ability for independent thinking.

Abstract:A mathematically well-defined, manifestly covariant theory of classical and quantum field is given, based on Euclidean Poisson algebras and a generalization of the Ehrenfest equation, which implies the stationary action principle. The theory opens a constructive spectral approach to finding physical states both in relativistic quantum field theories and for flexible phenomenological few-particle approximations. In particular, we obtain a Lorentz-covariant phenomenological multiparticle quantum dynamics for electromagnetic and gravitational interaction which provides a representation of the Poincare group without negative energy states. The dynamics reduces in the nonrelativistic limit to the traditional Hamiltonian multiparticle description with standard Newton and Coulomb forces. The key that allows us to overcome the traditional problems in canonical quantization is the fact that we use the algebra of linear operators on a space of wave functions slightly bigger than traditional Fock spaces.

Abstract:Noether's theorems are widely praised as some of the most beautiful and useful results in physics. However, if one reads the majority of standard texts and literature on the application of Noether's first theorem to field theory, one immediately finds that the ``canonical Noether energy-momentum tensor" derived from the 4-parameter translation of the Poincar\'e group does not correspond to what's widely accepted as the ``physical'' energy-momentum tensor for central theories such as electrodynamics. This gives the impression that Noether's first theorem is in some sense not working. In recognition of this issue, common practice is to ``improve" the canonical Noether energy-momentum tensor by adding suitable ad-hoc ``improvement" terms that will convert the canonical expression into the desired result. On the other hand, a less common but distinct method developed by Bessel-Hagen considers gauge symmetries as well as coordinate symmetries when applying Noether's first theorem; this allows one to uniquely derive the accepted physical energy-momentum tensor without the need for any ad-hoc improvement terms in theories with exactly gauge invariant actions. $\dots$ Using the converse of Noether's first theorem, we show that the Bessel-Hagen type transformations are uniquely selected in the case of electrodynamics, which powerfully dissolves the methodological ambiguity at hand. We then go on to consider how this line of argument applies to a variety of other cases, including in particular the challenge of defining an energy-momentum tensor for the gravitational field in linearized gravity. Finally, we put the search for proper Noether energy-momentum tensors into context with recent claims that Noether's theorem and its converse make statements on equivalence classes of symmetries and conservation laws$\dots$

Abstract:In 1990, Dyson published a proof due to Feynman of the Maxwell equations assuming only the commutation relations between position and velocity. With this minimal assumption, Feynman never supposed the existence of Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formalism. In the present communication, we review the study of a relativistic particle using ``Feynman brackets.'' We show that Poincar\'e's magnetic angular momentum and Dirac magnetic monopole are the consequences of the structure of the Lorentz Lie algebra defined by the Feynman's brackets. Then, we extend these ideas to the dual momentum space by considering noncommutative quantum mechanics. In this context, we show that the noncommutativity of the coordinates is responsible for a new effect called the spin Hall effect. We also show its relation with the Berry phase notion. As a practical application, we found an unusual spin-orbit contribution of a nonrelativistic particle that could be experimentally tested. Another practical application is the Berry phase effect on the propagation of light in inhomogeneous media.

Abstract:We present an exact quantum observable analog of the weak equivalence principle for a `relativistic' quantum particle. The quantum geodesic equations are obtained from Heisenberg equations of motion as an exact analog of a fully covariant classical Hamiltonian evolution picture, with the proper identification of the canonical momentum variables as , rather than . We discuss the meaning of the equations in relation to projective measurements as well as equations with solution curves as ones in the noncommutative geometric picture of spacetime, and a plausible approach to quantum gravity as a theory about quantum observables as physical quantities including the notion of quantum coordinate transformation.

Quantum harmonic oscillator in a time dependent noncommutative background

Abstract:This work explores the behaviour of a noncommutative harmonic oscillator in a time-dependent background, as previously investigated in [1]. Specifically, we examine the system when expressed in terms of commutative variables, utilizing a generalized form of the standard Bopp-shift relations recently introduced in [2]. We solved the time dependent system and obtained the analytical form of the eigenfunction using the method of Lewis invariants, which is associated with the Ermakov-Pinney equation, a non-linear differential equation. We then obtain exact analytical solution set for the Ermakov-Pinney equation. With these solutions in place, we move on to compute the dynamics of the energy expectation value analytically and explore their graphical representations for various solution sets of the Ermakov-Pinney equation, associated with a particular choice of quantum number. Finally, we determined the generalized form of the uncertainty equality relations among the operators for both commutative and noncommutative cases. Expectedly, our study is consistent with the findings in [1], specifically in a particular limit where the coordinate mapping relations reduce to the standard Bopp-shift relations.

A non-hermitean momentum operator for the particle in a box

Abstract:We construct a discrete non-hermitean momentum operator, which implements faithfully the non self-adjoint nature of momentum for a particle in a box. Its eigenfunctions are strictly limited to the interior of the box in the continuum limit, with the quarter wave as first non-trivial eigenstate. We show how to construct the corresponding hermitean Hamiltonian for the infinite well as concrete example to realize unitary dynamics. The resulting Hilbert space can be decomposed into a physical and unphysical subspace, which are mutually orthogonal. The physical subspace in the continuum limit reproduces that of the continuum theory and we give numerical evidence that the correct probability distributions for momentum and energy are recovered.
