Abstract:Taking the generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (GTHO) and singular time-dependent harmonic oscillator (STHO) as illustrative examples, we discuss the connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem and, for the system, find: (1) The classical basic invariants and general form of classical invariants. (2) The current algebra and corresponding operator algebra. (3) A kind of converse of the Noether's theorem. (4) The connection between the so-called symmetry algebra ({G(k)} algebra) and the classical current algebra through the operator algebra.

Abstract:In this paper, the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (DGTHO) is studied by making use of the new concept of quantum basic invariants. The connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem is discussed. The classical basic invariants as well as the general form of classical invariants for the system are found. From these, we get the five Noether invariants and the set of corresponding infinitesimal generators {G(k)}, hence, generalizing the work of G. Profilo and G. Soliani. Also, for the system, we calculate the current algebra which, as the central extension of the {G(k)} algebra, should be regarded as the dynamical symmetry algebra for the system and is therefore more important than the {G(k)} algebra. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of a kind of converse of Noether's theorem.

Abstract:We show that the classical Hamilton equations of motion can be derived from the energy conservation condition. A similar argument is shown to carry to the quantum formulation of Hamiltonian dynamics. Hence, showing a striking similarity between the quantum formulation and the classical formulation. Furthermore, it is shown that the fundamental commutator can be derived from the Heisenberg equations of motion and the quantum Hamilton equations of motion. Also, that the Heisenberg equations of motion can be derived from the Schrödinger equation for the quantum state, which is the fundamental postulate. These results are shown to have important bearing for deriving the quantum Maxwell’s equations.

Abstract:A quantum anomaly is the breaking of symmetry with respect to some transformations after the quantization of a classical Hamiltonian or Lagrangian system. It is shown that both the Noether theorems (including their infinite-dimensional versions) and the explanation of the origin of quantum anomalies can be obtained by using similar formulas for derivatives of functions whose values are measure in the former case and pseudomeasures in the latter.

Abstract:Quantum hydrodynamics represents quantum mechanics through two complementary models: the Eulerian picture, a direct transcription of wave mechanics, and the Lagrangian picture, in which the quantum state is represented by the collective motion of a continuum of fluid particles, the latter being obtained by continuously varying the particle label. The Lagrangian picture thus adds variables to the quantum formalism and exhibits a corresponding new quantum symmetry viz. a continuous particle-relabelling covariance group. Using Noether's theorem, the relabelling symmetry is derived as a component of a general investigation of symmetries and conservation laws in the quantum Lagrangian picture. Relations with symmetries and conservation laws in the Eulerian picture are explored in detail. Alongside the infinite relabelling group, the 12-parameter kinematical covariance group of the Schrödinger equation is derived. It is stressed that the role of label transformations extends beyond the class corresponding to Eulerian invariance. As an example, it is shown that the linear superposition of waves, a fundamental symmetry of the quantum Eulerian picture, can be generated by a deformation-dependent label transformation in the Lagrangian picture.

Abstract:The Schrödinger equation for an electron under the influence of an electromagnetic field is analyzed based on the conserved operators of the system when the magnetic field is described by Landau's gauge. It is shown that the Lorentz force can be recovered only if two conserved generalized momentum operators are considered: one along the $x$-axis and the second one along $y$-axis; otherwise, the system cannot be fully described. Based on the general solution found, a ground state is built which has the characteristic of having quantized resistivity proportional to integer multiples of the von Klitzing's constant when it is invariant under a unitary transform.

Higher conservation laws for the quantum non-linear Schrödinger equation

Abstract:We construct explicit forms for two non-trivial conservation laws of the quantum non-linear Schrödinger equation and show that they have the correct quasi-classical limit. For H4 the second quantised form cannot be obtained by normal ordering of the classical conserved quantity H4cl. We show the quantum inverse scattering method also gives the correct higher Hamiltonians H3 and H4. The surprising result is that the expansion of fundamental integrals of motion such as A(λ), in inverse powers of λ, cannot be recovered by normal ordering of the classical expansion.

Abstract:Conserved quantities such as energy or the electric charge of a closed system, or the Runge-Lenz vector in Kepler dynamics are determined by its global, local, or accidental symmetries. They were instrumental to advances such as the prediction of neutrinos in the (inverse) beta decay process and the development of self-consistent approximate methods for isolated or thermal many-body systems. In contrast, little is known about conservation laws and their consequences in open systems. Recently, a special class of these systems, called parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric systems, has been intensely explored for their remarkable properties that are absent in their closed counterparts. A complete characterization and observation of conserved quantities in these systems and their consequences is still lacking. Here we present a complete set of conserved observables for a broad class of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and experimentally demonstrate their properties using single-photon linear optical circuit. By simulating the dynamics of a four-site system across a fourth-order exceptional point, we measure its four conserved quantities and demonstrate their consequences. Our results spell out non-local conservation laws in non-unitary dynamics and provide key elements that will underpin self-consistent analysis of non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems that are forthcoming.

Abstract:The algebraic formulation of discrete $P$ and $T$ space-time symmetries in terms of the Dirac algebra is shown to be flawed. This is corrected by relating these symmetries to fermion quantum numbers defined by a $Cl_{3,3}$ sub-algebra of the $Cl_{7,7}$ Clifford Unification algebra. A new {\it Conservation Law} is formulated to the effect that fermion decays and interactions conserve all seven quantum numbers defined by $Cl_{7,7}$. This can be applied in the design of high energy experiments and the qualitative interpretation of their results.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate how the Legendre transform connects the statements of Noether's theorem in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics. We give precise definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities in both the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian frameworks and discuss why these notions in the Hamiltonian framework are somewhat less rigid. We explore conditions which, when put on these definitions, allow the Legendre transform to set up a one-to-one correspondence between them. We also discuss how to preserve this correspondence when the definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities are less restrictive.

Abstract:A spectroscopic application of the atom laser is suggested. The spectroscopy termed 2PACC employs the coherent properties of matter-waves from a two pulse atom laser. These waves are employed to control a gas-surface chemical recombination reaction. The method is demonstrated for an Eley-Rideal reaction of a hydrogen or alkali atom-laser pulse where the surface target is an adsorbed hydrogen atom. The reaction yields either a hydrogen or alkali hydride molecule. The desorbed gas phase molecular yield and its internal state is shown to be controlled by the time and phase delay between two atom-laser pulses. The calculation is based on solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in a diabatic framework. The probability of desorption which is the predicted 2PACC signal has been calculated as a function of the pulse parameters.

Abstract:A certain non-Noetherian connection between symmetry and integrability properties of nonlinear field equations in conservation-law form is studied. It is shown that the symmetry condition alone may lead, in a rather straightforward way, to the construction of a Lax pair, a doubly infinite set of (generally nonlocal) conservation laws, and a recursion operator for symmetries. Applications include the chiral field equation and the self-dual Yang-Mills equation.

Abstract:In the paradigmatic example of quantum measurements, whenever one measures a system which starts in a superposition of two states of a conserved quantity, it jumps to one of the two states, implying different final values for the quantity that should have been conserved. The standard law of conservation for quantum mechanics handles this jump by stating only that the total distribution of the conserved quantity over repeated measurements is unchanged, but states nothing about individual cases. Here however we show that one can go beyond this and have conservation in each individual instance. We made our arguments in the case of angular momentum of a particle on a circle, where many technicalities simplify, and bring arguments to show that this holds in full generality. Hence we argue that the conservation law in quantum mechanics should be rewritten, to go beyond its hitherto statistical formulation, to state that the total of a conserved quantity is unchanged in every individual measurement outcome. As a further crucial element, we show that conservation can be localised at the level of the system of interest and its relevant frame of reference, and is independent on any assumptions on the distribution of the conserved quantity over the entire universe.

Abstract:Symmetries in physical systems are defined in terms of conserved Noether Currents of the associated Lagrangian. In electrodynamic systems, global symmetry is defined through conservation of charges, which is reflected in gauge symmetry; however, loss of charges from a radiating system can be interpreted as localized loss of the Noether current which implies that electrodynamic symmetry has been locally broken. Thus, we propose that global symmetries and localized symmetry breaking are interwoven into the framework of Maxwell's equations which appear as globally conserved and locally non-conserved charges in an electrodynamic system and define the geometric topology of the electromagnetic field. We apply the ideas in the context of explaining radiation from dielectric materials with low physical dimensions. We also briefly look at the nature of reversibility in electromagnetic wave generation which was initially proposed by Planck, but opposed by Einstein and in recent years by Zoh.This article is part of the theme issue 'Celebrating 125 years of Oliver Heaviside's 'Electromagnetic Theory''.

Abstract:Conservation laws are formulated for systems of differential equations by using symmetries and adjoint symmetries, and an application to systems of evolution equations is made, together with illustrative examples. The formulation does not require the existence of a Lagrangian for a given system, and the presented examples include computations of conserved densities for the heat equation, Burgers' equation and the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
