Abstract:Superhydrophobicity has received significant attention over the past three decades owing to its significant potential in self-cleaning, anti-icing and drag reduction surfaces, energy-harvesting devices, antibacterial coatings, and enhanced heat transfer applications. Superhydrophobicity can be obtained via the roughening of an intrinsically hydrophobic surface, the creation of a re-entrant geometry, or by the roughening of a hydrophilic surface followed by a conformal coating of a hydrophobic material. Intrinsically hydrophobic surfaces have poor thermophysical properties, such as thermal conductivity, and thus are not suitable for heat transfer applications. Re-entrant geometries, although versatile in applications where droplets are deposited, break down during spatially random nucleation and flood the surface. Chemical functionalization of rough metallic substrates, although promising, is not utilized because of the poor durability of conformal hydrophobic coatings. Here we develop a radically different approach to achieve stable superhydrophobicity. By utilizing laser processing and thermal oxidation of copper (Cu) to create a high surface energy hierarchical copper oxide (CuO), followed by repeatable and passive atmospheric adsorption of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), we show that stable superhydrophobicity with apparent advancing contact angles ≈160° and contact angle hysteresis as low as ≈20° can be achieved. We exploit the structure length scale and structure geometry-dependent VOC adsorption dynamics to rationally design CuO nanowires with enhanced superhydrophobicity. To gain an understanding of the VOC adsorption physics, we utilized X-ray photoelectron and ion mass spectroscopy to identify the chemical species deposited on our surfaces in two distinct locations: Urbana, IL, United States and Beijing, China. To test the stability of the atmosphere-mediated superhydrophobic surfaces during heterogeneous nucleation, we used high-speed optical microscopy to demonstrate the occurrence of dropwise condensation and stable coalescence-induced droplet jumping. Our work not only provides rational design guidelines for developing passively durable superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent flooding-resistance and self-healing capability but also sheds light on the key role played by the atmosphere in governing wetting.

Abstract:Using the first-principles method of density functional theory (DFT) and the plane-wave ultra-soft pseudopotential method, the adsorption process of water on a perfect pyrite surface and a surface with an adsorbed sulfur atom was calculated and simulated. The mechanistic role of sulfur formed during pyrite surface oxidation in the hydrophobicity of pyrite surfaces was explored. The simulation results showed that compared with the perfect pyrite surface, the surface with an adsorbed sulfur atom had an absorption energy that went from a negative to a positive value. The strong Fe-S covalent bond was formed first between the surface pyrite iron atom and the adsorbed sulfur atom. Following this, a weak S-O bond was formed between the sulfur and oxygen atoms of the water molecule. The adsorption of H2O on the pyrite surface was hindered by the generation of sulfur so that the surface with an adsorbed sulfur atom became hydrophilic. The simulation results are consistent with the results of wetting heat The influence of sulfur adsorption on pyrite hydrophobicity was mechanistically revealed from the view of quantum chemistry.
The Mechanism of Defect Induced Hydroxylation on Pyrite Surfaces and Implications for Hydroxyl Radical Generation in Prebiotic Chemistry

Abstract:The generation of reactive oxygen species H2O2 and OH from pyrite in anaerobic environments plays an important role in the evolution of early Earth. What remains debatable is the underlying mechanism leading to the OH generation reactions. Using a comprehensive approach combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we investigated binding energies and valence band structures of defective pyrite surfaces in an attempt to interrogate pyrite-mediated H2O dissociation in the presence and absence of crystal defects. The results show that, while energetically inhibited on perfect crystal faces, H2O dissociation is thermodynamically favored at defective sites. Furthermore, the formation of surface defects can lead to an energy shift in valence bands and thereby forming two defect states. Simultaneously, interaction between both defect states and water molecules makes the hydroxylation energetically favored on the pyrite surface. The hydroxylation occurs through proton transfer from water to a defective S monomer, resulting in an FeO(H)···HS structure. These findings provide new insight into pyrite-assisted OH formation processes in anaerobic conditions and may be important for understanding prebiotic chemistry and the evolution of early Earth.
Theoretical exploration of the interaction between hydrogen and pyrite-type FeS2 surfaces

Abstract:Elucidating the interactions between hydrogen and catalysts under complex realistic conditions is of great importance in rationally modulating the catalytic performance of hydrogenation processes. Herein, we have investigated the interaction between hydrogen and four typical surfaces, (1 0 0), (2 1 0), (2 1 1), and (3 1 1) of pyrite FeS2 through density functional theory calculations. On (2 1 0) surface, the hydrogen dissociative adsorption on unsaturated-coordination sulfur atoms is favorable both in thermodynamics and kinetics. The hydrogen activation barrier is 0.83 eV with slight exothermic of 0.12 eV on (3 1 1). While on (1 0 0) and (2 1 1) surface, the hydrogen dissociation is unfavorable due to the high activation barriers and remarkable positive reaction energies. For high adsorption coverage, the pure molecule adsorption mode is favorable on (1 0 0) facet, opposed to the other surfaces which have temperature and pressure dependence. The saturated coverage sequence is (1 0 0) > (2 1 0) > (2 1 1) > (3 1 1) for a wide range of temperature and pressure. The remove of sulfur atoms most likely occurs on (2 1 0) surface. Our atomistic insights might be useful in engineering hydrogen-involved processes catalyzed by iron sulfide.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, a SEM and contact angle study of a pyrite (100) surface is reported describing the relationship between surface oxidation and the hydrophilic surface state. In addition to these experimental results, the following simulated surface states were examined using molecular dynamics simulation (MDS): a fresh unoxidized (100) surface; polysulfide at the (100) surface; and elemental sulfur at the (100) surface. Crystal structures for the polysulfide and elemental sulfur at the (100) surface were simulated using density functional theory (DFT) quantum chemical calculations. The well known oxidation mechanism which involves formation of a metal deficient layer was also described with DFT. Our MDS results of the behavior of interfacial water at the fresh and oxidized pyrite (100) surfaces without/with the presence of ferric hydroxide include simulated contact angles, number density distribution for water, water dipole orientation, water residence time, and hydrogen-bonding considerations. The significance of the formation of ferric hydroxide islands in accounting for the corresponding hydrophilic surface state is revealed not only from experimental contact angle measurements but also from simulated contact angle measurements using MDS. The hydrophilic surface state developed at oxidized pyrite surfaces has been described by MDS, on which basis the surface state is explained, based on interfacial water structure.

Abstract:From the structural studies on water and air/water interface, hydration free energy is derived, and used to investigate the origin of hydrophobic effects. As a solute is dissolved into water, hydration free energy increases, and is divided into initial and hydrophobic solvation processes. In the initial process, hydration free energy is dominated by hydrogen bonding in interfacial water (topmost water layer at solute/water interface). For hydrophobic process, hydration free energy is related to the hydrogen bonding in bulk and interfacial water. Therefore, hydrophobic effects originate from the structural competition between hydrogen bonding in bulk water and that in interfacial water.

Abstract:We present a mechanism of intriguing polar hydrophobicity of a series of naturally formed minerals: their surface cavities can effectively trap water molecules, and the water trapping remarkably disrupts the hydrogen bond interaction among interfacial water and leads to considerable hydrophobicity. Diminishing water trapping by decreasing surface roughness can considerably enhance wettability, which illustrates that a Wenzel model is no longer valid for polar materials with atomic-scale roughness.

Abstract:The dynamics of water near the nanoscale hydrophobic (graphite-CH3) and hydrophilic (graphite-COOH) plates has been studied in detail with molecular dynamics simulations in this paper. It is shown that these designed surfaces (by growing a layer of methyl or carboxyl groups on top of graphite) can have a significant impact on the neighboring water dynamics, with the hydrophilic carboxyl surface having even more profound effects. The water hydrogen bond lifetime is much longer near both types of surfaces than that in the bulk, while on the other hand the water diffusion constant is much smaller than that in the bulk. The difference in the diffusion constant can be as large as a factor of 8 and the difference in the hydrogen bond lifetime can be as large as a factor of 2, depending on the distance from the surface. Furthermore, the water molecules in the first solvation shell of surface atoms show a strong bias in hydroxyl group orientation near the surface, confirming some of the previous findings. Finally, the possible water dewetting transition between two graphite-CH3 plates and the effect of the strength of the solute-solvent attractions on the water drying transition are investigated. The relationship among the dewetting transition critical distance, van der Waals potential well depth, and water contact angle on the graphite-CH3 surface is also analyzed on the basis of a simple macroscopic theory, which can be used to predict the dewetting transition critical distance.
Heterogeneous Uptake and Oxidation of So2 on Iron Oxides

Abstract:Heterogeneous oxidation of gas-phase SO2 on different iron oxides was investigated in situ using a White cell coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results revealed that adsorbed SO2 could be oxidized on the surface of most iron oxides to form a surface sulfate species at ambient temperature. Additional support for this hypothesis was provided by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements and ion chromatogram (IC) analysis. The spectroscopic results further revealed that the surface hydroxyl species on the iron oxides was the key reactant for this heterogeneous oxidation. Furthermore, the bidentate sulfate species were the predominant surface species with alpha-Fe2O3, alpha-FeOOH, and Fe3O4, while the monodentate surface Fe(III)-sulfato complexes were available in the case of gamma-Fe2O3. Using the BET area as the reactive surface area, the samples showed the varied reactivity in the order of alpha-Fe2O3 > gamma-Fe2O3 > Fe3O4 > beta-FeOOH > alpha-FeOOH. Some preliminary experiments indicated a significant acceleration during SO2 uptake on the surface of alpha-Fe2O3 in the presence of oxygen. In contrast, no significant formation of sulfate was seen on the surface of alpha-Fe2O3 prereduced by H-2 at 523 K at the absence of O-2, suggesting that the concentration of adsorbed oxygen over catalyst surfaces may be the key factor contributing to the oxidizing activities. On the basis of these results, the atmospheric implications of these studies on SO2 uptake on Fe-rich mineral aerosol were discussed.

Abstract:Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D2) was used to calculate the adsorption/dissociation mechanisms of H2S and diffusion mechanism of H atoms on a pristine FeS(001) surface and on FeS(001) surfaces with various pre-adsorbed atoms. The calculation results showed that the pre-adsorption of atoms was beneficial to H2S adsorption/dissociation, and the first-order dissociation energy barrier (Ea) of H2S on the FeS(001) + S surface is reduced from 2.06 eV on the pristine surface to 0.97 eV. Additionally, the pre-adsorption of an H atom was found to not only reduced the diffusion Ea of H atoms (0.62 eV), but also shortened the diffusion path (P3→P4). Finally, calculations indicated that the thermodynamic conditions on the pristine FeS(001) surface were conducive to the generation of H2 molecules (Ea = 0.08 eV; reaction heat (ΔE) ΔE = −1.54 eV). These results increase our understanding of H2S adsorption and dissociation and H atom diffusion on different FeS (001) surfaces, and provide a theoretical basis for corrosion prevention. This work also has reference value for the study of the mechanisms by which molecules/atoms in the environment influence related systems.

Abstract:Graphitic carbons are important solid materials with myriad applications including electrodes, adsorbents, catalyst support, and solid lubricants. Understanding the interaction between water and graphitic carbons is critically important for both fundamental material characterization and practical device fabrication because the water-graphitic interface is essential to many applications. Research interests in graphene and carbon nanotubes over the past decades have brought renewed interest to elucidate wettability of graphitic carbons and understand their interaction with the surrounding environment. Research on this topic can be traced back to the 1940s, and the prevailing notion has been that graphitic carbons are hydrophobic. Though there have been different voices, this conclusion is supported by many previous water contact angle tests and well accepted by the community since sp2 carbon is nonpolar in nature. However, recent results from our groups showed that graphitic surfaces are intrinsically mildly hydrophilic and adsorbed hydrocarbon contaminants from the ambient air render the surface hydrophobic. This unexpected finding challenges the long-lasting conception and could completely change the way graphitic materials are made, modeled, and modified. With several other research groups reporting similar findings, it is important for the community to realize the importance of airborne contamination on the surface-related properties of graphitic materials and revisit the intrinsic water-graphite interaction. This Account aims to summarize our recent work on water wettability of graphitic surfaces and discuss future research directions toward understanding the intrinsic water-graphite interaction. Historical perspective will first be provided highlighting the long accepted notion that graphite is hydrophobic along with a few reports suggesting otherwise. Next, our recent experimental data will be presented showing that pristine graphene and graphite are mildly hydrophilic; chemical analysis showed that hydrocarbons adsorb onto the clean surfaces thus rendering them hydrophobic. These results are further rationalized by analyzing the change in surface energy of the graphitic surfaces before and after hydrocarbon contamination. Facile methods to remove hydrocarbons from a contaminated surface will be discussed along with a convenient water treatment method that we developed to inhibit hydrocarbon adsorption onto a pristine graphitic surface. Implications of contamination will be illustrated through comparing the electrochemical activity of pristine and contaminated graphite. Lastly, consequences of these findings and future research directions to address a few important unanswered questions will be discussed.
X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopic Quantification and Speciation Modeling of Sulfate Adsorption on Ferrihydrite Surfaces

Abstract:Sulfate adsorption on mineral surfaces is an important environmental chemical process, but the structures and respective contribution of different adsorption complexes under various environmental conditions are unclear. By combining sulfur K-edge XANES and EXAFS spectroscopy, quantum chemical calculations, and surface complexation modeling (SCM), we have shown that sulfate forms both outer-sphere complexes and bidentate-binuclear inner-sphere complexes on ferrihydrite surfaces. The relative fractions of the complexes vary with pH, ionic strength (I), and sample hydration degree (wet versus air-dried), but their structures remained the same. The inner-sphere complex adsorption loading decreases with increasing pH while remaining unchanged with I. At both I = 0.02 and 0.1 M, the outer-sphere complex loading reaches maximum at pH ∼5 and then decreases with pH, whereas it monotonically decreases with pH at I = 0.5 M. These observations result from a combination of the ionic-strength effect, the pH dependence of anion adsorption, and the competition between inner- and outer-sphere complexation. Air-drying drastically converts the outer-sphere complexes to the inner-sphere complexes. The respective contributions to the overall adsorption loading of the two complexes were directly modeled with the extended triple layer SCM by implementing the bidentate-binuclear inner-sphere complexation identified in the present study. These findings improve our understanding of sulfate adsorption and its effects on other environmental chemical processes and have important implications for generalizing the adsorption behavior of anions forming both inner- and outer-sphere complexes on mineral surfaces.
Preparation of superhydrophobic nanoplate iron oxide surface on a carbon steel for anti-wetting applications

Abstract:A simple route to fabricate a surface layer comprising Fe3O4 nanoplates on a carbon steel has been successfully demonstrated using etching treatment followed by annealing in oxygen atmosphere. Different sizes of the Fe3O4 (3 1 1) exposed nanoplates can be fabricated by varying the annealing temperature. Density Function Theory (DFT) calculation proved that the energy of Fe3O4 (3 1 1) surface was the lowest among all exposed facets, which make it most stable. The superhydrophobicity has been realized after modification with trimethoxy silane (HFTMS). Molecular dynamic simulation was further carried out to verify the excellent anti-wettability of the modified surface. In addition, the superhydrophobic surface exhibited a low adhesion with water and displays excellent performance in anti-corrosion, anti-icing and self-cleaning.

Abstract:The naturally-formed iron (hydr)oxides on the surface of zero valent iron (ZVI) have long been considered as passivation layer and inert phases which significantly reduce the reaction activities when they are employed in environmental remediation. Although it seems there are no direct benefits to keep these passivation layers, here, we show that such phases are necessary intermediates for the transformation to iron sulfides through an anion exchange pathway during sulfidation of ZVI. The pre-formed (hydr)oxides undergo a phase evolution upon aging and specific phases can be effectively trapped, which can be confirmed by a combination of different characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Interestingly, after sulfidation, the resultant samples originated from different (hydr)oxides demonstrate different activities in the Cr(VI) sequestration. The XANES investigation of Fe K edge and Fe L2,3 edge indicates Fe remains the same after sulfidation, suggesting a non-redox, anion exchange reaction pathway for the production of iron sulfides, where O2- anions are directly replaced with S2-. Consequently, the structural characteristics of the parent (hydr)oxides are inherited by the as-formed iron sulfides, which make them behave differently because of their different structural natures.

Abstract:Hydrophobic surfaces and coatings have attracted more and more interest in recent years due to their broad applications in diverse areas. In many cases, a metallic surface would demonstrate a reversible wettability from hydrophilic state to hydrophobic state spontaneously. However, the wetting behavior and hydrophobic mechanism of metallic surfaces are far from clear. In this work, 304 stainless steel (SS) surface and Ni–Cu–P coatings have been chosen to investigate the intrinsic mechanism of the surface wettability transition with the help of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ambient air/vacuum storage treatment. The surface topographies, wetting behaviors and surface chemistry were studied systemically. The results showed that water contact angle (WCA) variation of the as-prepared surfaces changing from hydrophilic state to hydrophobic state is largely associated with the specific surface area. The recovery of water repellency is related to a time constant which mainly depends on micro-scale surface convolution or surface roughness. Rougher surface tends to accelerate the surface adsorption of airborne hydrocarbon species in the ambient atmosphere, leading to a more intensive WCA increase. The study provides a generic theoretical justification for relevant time-dependent wettability studies.

Abstract:A hierarchical surface was fabricated by electrodeposition of copper coating and chemical oxidation to form copper oxide, and the surface energy was lowered by chemical modification. The optimum parameters including seven days of chemical modification, 0.12mol/L of (NH4)2S2O8, 2.5mol/L of KOH and 60°C of oxidation temperature were used to fabricate the superhydrophobic surface with a water contact angle up to around 160° and a sliding angle about 3° on a steel substrate. Silver mirror effect and simple calculation showed that the wetting state between a water droplet and the hierarchical superhydrophobic surface was the Cassie state. This superhydrophobic surface had excellent self-cleaning properties for two different sizes (∼50μm and 150μm) of fly-ash cenospheres, and we gave the reason for its self-cleaning properties by the force involved at the interface. We also investigated the dynamics of water droplets impinging onto the superhydrophobic surface with different impact velocities, ranging from 0.31m/s to 1.71m/s, and found that all the water droplets could rebound from the superhydrophobic surface, with no trace of adhesion. In addition, a variety of tests were performed to assess the robustness of the superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:From the macroscopic point of view, the hydrophilicity of symbiotic carbon pyrite is weakened overall compared to that of pure pyrite. It is very important to explain the impact of elemental carbon accreted on a pyrite surface on the surface's hydrophobicity from the perspective of quantum chemistry. To study the influence of adsorbed carbon atoms on the hydrophilicity of a coal pyrite surface versus a pyrite surface, the adsorption of a single water molecule at an adjacent Fe site of a one-carbon-atom-covered pyrite surface and a carbon atom monolayer were simulated and calculated with the first-principles method of density functional theory (DFT). The water molecules can be stably adsorbed at the adjacent Fe site of the carbon-atom-covered pyrite surface. The hybridization of the O 2p (H2O) and Fe 3d (pyrite surface) orbitals was the main interaction between the water molecule and the pyrite surface, forming a strong Fe-O covalent bond. The water molecule only slightly adsorbs above a C atom on the carbon-atom-covered pyrite and the carbon atom monolayer surfaces. The valence bond between the water molecule and the pyrite surface changed from an Fe-O bond to an Fe-C-O bond, in which the C-O bond is very weak, resulting in a weaker interaction between water and the surface.
Sulfur Loading and Speciation Control the Hydrophobicity, Electron Transfer, Reactivity, and Selectivity of Sulfidized Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron

Abstract:Sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (SNZVI) is a promising material for groundwater remediation. However, the relationships between sulfur content and speciation and the properties of SNZVI materials are unknown, preventing rational design. Here, the effects of sulfur on the crystalline structure, hydrophobicity, sulfur speciation, corrosion potential, and electron transfer resistance are determined. Sulfur incorporation extended the nano‐Fe0 BCC lattice parameter, reduced the Fe local vacancies, and lowered the resistance to electron transfer. Impacts of the main sulfur species (FeS and FeS2) on hydrophobicity (water contact angles) are consistent with density functional theory calculations for these FeSx phases. These properties well explain the reactivity and selectivity of SNZVI during the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE), a hydrophobic groundwater contaminant. Controlling the amount and speciation of sulfur in the SNZVI made it highly reactive (up to 0.41 L m−2 d−1) and selective for TCE degradation over water (up to 240 moles TCE per mole H2O), with an electron efficiency of up to 70%, and these values are 54‐fold, 98‐fold, and 160‐fold higher than for NZVI, respectively. These findings can guide the rational design of robust SNZVI with properties tailored for specific application scenarios.
