Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is regarded as a major odor causing compound in landfill gas that may lead to adverse environmental and health effects. In this study, the potential role of iron in the entire life cycle of H2S production and emission was investigated during the decomposition of biodegradable substrates in the landfilled refuse. The results showed that the quantity of H2S emission decreased about 95% when Fe(OH)(3) was present in the biodegradable sulfur-containing substrates. During this degradation process, a lot of sulfide was generated, which was present mostly as ferrous sulfide. In addition, a total of 7.68% S-H2S of total sulfur released as gas phase could be remained in solid liquid phase effectively in the simulated substrates with iron. Thus, using the appropriate way to take advantage of iron "hidden" in the landfilled refuse might be a good choice for in situ control of H2S emission. Moreover, if this high level of iron is not presented, landfill odor pollution might become more serious. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Impact of Redox Reactions on Colloid Transport in Saturated Porous Media: An Example of Ferrihydrite Colloids Transport in the Presence of Sulfide

Abstract:Transport of colloids in the subsurface is an important environmental process with most research interests centered on the transport in chemically stable conditions. While colloids can be formed under dynamic redox conditions, the impact of redox reactions on their transport is largely overlooked. Taking the redox reactions between ferrihydrite colloids and sulfide as an example, we investigated how and to what extent the redox reactions modulated the transport of ferrihydrite colloids in anoxic sand columns over a range of environmentally relevant conditions. Our results reveal that the presence of sulfide (7.8-46.9 μM) significantly decreased the breakthrough of ferrihydrite colloids in the sand column. The estimated travel distance of ferrihydrite colloids in the absence of sulfide was nearly 7-fold larger than that in the presence of 46.9 μM sulfide. The reduced breakthrough was primarily attributed to the reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite colloids by sulfide in parallel with formation of elemental sulfur (S(0)) particles from sulfide oxidation. Reductive dissolution decreased the total mass of ferrihydrite colloids, while the negatively charged S(0) decreased the overall zeta potential of ferrihydrite colloids by attaching onto their surfaces and thus enhanced their retention in the sand. Our findings provide novel insights into the critical role of redox reactions on the transport of redox-sensitive colloids in saturated porous media.
Stability and molecular fractionation of ferrihydrite-bound organic carbon during iron reduction by dissolved sulfide

Abstract:The interactions of organic carbon (OC) with ferric iron (Fe) oxides play an important role in OC stabilization, but reductive dissolution of Fe(III) oxides under anoxic conditions potentially compromises the stabilization of Fe-bound OC (Fe-OC). Up to date, there are very limited studies on the fate of Fe-OC in sulfidic conditions commonly encountered in OC-rich marine sediments. Herein, multi-pronged studies were implemented to quantitatively characterize the capacity of metastable iron sulfide (FeS) to sequester OC extracted from marine sediments and to unravel the fate of ferrihydrite-bound OC complexes (Fh-OCs) when exposed to dissolved sulfide. Results show that, for a given mechanism of OC association (adsorption or coprecipitation), FeS has DOC retention capacity generally comparable to Fh, implying that the metastable phase could serve as an important OC sink in anoxic marine sediments. During reduction of Fh-OCs by dissolved sulfide, Fh reduction was progressively retarded with increasing OC pre-adsorption, while Fh reduction was promoted after DOC pre-coprecipitation. Despite high extents of Fe reduction by dissolved sulfide, OC release from Fh-OC coprecipitates was low due to efficient re-sequestration of released DOC by coprecipitation with FeS, and an increase in OC pre-loading could facilitate Fe2+ sulfidization and thus re-sequestration of released DOC by FeS. When Fh-OC adsorption complexes were exposed to dissolved sulfide, substantial OC release was restricted to the complexes with lower OC pre-adsorption (C/Fe ≤ 1.5). Overall, reactive Fe reduction by dissolved sulfide may not lead to substantial release of associated OC as long as reduced Fe could be sulfidized to efficiently re-sequester concomitantly released DOC. Results of carbon-1 s near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy indicate that, upon reduction of Fh-OCs by dissolved sulfide and subsequent FeS formation, carboxyl-C was selectively released into the solution but aromatic-C selectively remained on the solid matrixes after Fe reduction, suggesting that OC sink switching from Fe oxides to Fe sulfides could result in molecular fractionations of porewater DOC to some extent, with potential implications for OC biogeochemical cycling.

Sulfur species as redox partners and electron shuttles for ferrihydrite reduction by Sulfurospirillum deleyianum

Abstract:Iron(III) (oxyhydr)oxides can represent the dominant microbial electron acceptors under anoxic conditions in many aquatic environments, which makes understanding the mechanisms and processes regulating their dissolution and transformation particularly important. In a previous laboratory-based study, it has been shown that 0.05 mM thiosulfate can reduce 6 mM ferrihydrite indirectly via enzymatic reduction of thiosulfate to sulfide by the sulfur-reducing bacterium Sulfurospirillum deleyianum, followed by abiotic reduction of ferrihydrite coupled to reoxidation of sulfide. Thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, and polysulfides were proposed as reoxidized sulfur species functioning as electron shuttles. However, the exact electron transfer pathway remained unknown. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the sulfur species involved. Apart from thiosulfate, substoichiometric amounts of sulfite, tetrathionate, sulfide, or polysulfides also initiated ferrihydrite reduction. The portion of thiosulfate produced during abiotic ferrihydrite-dependent reoxidation of sulfide was about 10% of the total sulfur at maximum. The main abiotic oxidation product was elemental sulfur attached to the iron mineral surface, which indicates that direct contact between microorganisms and ferrihydrite is necessary to maintain the iron reduction process. Polysulfides were not detected in the liquid phase. Minor amounts were found associated either with microorganisms or the mineral phase. The abiotic oxidation of sulfide in the reaction with ferrihydrite was identified as rate determining. Cysteine, added as a sulfur source and a reducing agent, also led to abiotic ferrihydrite reduction and therefore should be eliminated when sulfur redox reactions are investigated. Overall, we could demonstrate the large impact of intermediate sulfur species on biogeochemical iron transformations.
Photoinduced transformation of ferrihydrite in the presence of aqueous sulfite and its influence on the repartitioning of Cd

Abstract:The photoinduced transformation of ferrihydrite is an important process that can predict the geochemical cycle of Fe in anoxic environments as well as the fate of trace elements bonded to Fe minerals. We report that the photooxidation of sulfite by UV irradiation produces hydrated electrons (super-reductants), which significantly promote ferrihydrite reduction to Fe(II), and SO3•- (a moderate oxidant), enabling its further oxidation to more crystalline Fe(III) products. The experimental results show that the concentration of sulfite was key in influencing the rate and extent of surface-bound Fe(II) formation, which ultimately determined the distribution of individual products. For example, fitting of the Mössbauer spectroscopy data revealed that the relative abundances of mineral species after 8 h of treatment in the UV/sulfite systems were 41.9% lepidocrocite and 58.1% ferrihydrite at 2 mM SO32-; 41.8% goethite, 28.2% lepidocrocite, and 29.1% ferrihydrite at 5 mM SO32-; and 100% goethite at 10 mM SO32-. The combined results of the chemical speciation analysis and the Cd K-edge EXAFS characterization provided compelling evidence that Cd was firmly incorporated into the structure of newly formed minerals, particularly at high sulfite concentrations. These findings provide an understanding of the role of UV/sulfite in facilitating ferrihydrite transformation and promoting Cd stabilization in oxygen-deficit soils and aquatic environments.

Coexisting ferrihydrite-enhanced contaminant degradation during pyrite oxygenation

Abstract:Oxygenation of pyrite (Py) is known to mediate generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with these species capable of inducing contaminants degradation, whereas the possible participation of coexisting Fe(III) minerals in these processes is still unclear. This study finds that freshly formed ferrihydrite (Fh) significantly enhances the Py-mediated sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation process. Through the 56Fe isotope tracer experiment and a series of control experiments, Fh is found to be reduced by Py to form secondary solid-phase Fe(II) species (Fe(II)RF) which in turn facilitates generation of H2O2 from the O2 reduction pathway. However, Py was found to mediate rapid structural transformation of Fh to form more thermodynamically stable goethite and hematite with these less redox active minerals unable to sustainably promote the Py-mediated SMX degradation process. Therefore, the improvement of Fh on Py-mediated SMX degradation process is not readily observable in reaction systems with low concentrations of coexisting Fh. In comparison, continuing input of 10 mM Fh increased the degradation efficiency of SMX by 60 % over three days. Our results demonstrate that the oxidative degradation of organic contaminants over the oxygenation of Py when coexisting with Fh can be more significant but currently underestimated.

Abstract:The process of FeS oxygenation is intrinsically associated with the fate of contaminants in heterogeneous aquifers, whereas the impacts of common heavy metals are poorly understood. In this study, we found that the introduction of Co 2+ and Ni 2+ (Me 2+ ) resulted in a remarkable 3–10-fold enhancement in the degradation of bisphenol A, which stemmed from the significant increase in the generation of •OH and SO 4 •− . The improved production of reactive species was primarily attributed to the accelerated regeneration of Fe(II); the introduction of Me 2+ manipulated the electronic structure of FeS and consequently facilitated electron transfer from S 2- to Fe(III), as revealed by experimental evidence and density functional theory calculations. This study represents the first endeavor to underscore the influence of coexisting heavy metals on contaminant degradation during FeS oxygenation.

Abstract:Sulfate-reducing bacteria play an important role in the geochemistry of iron (oxyhydr)oxide and arsenic (As) in natural environments; however, the associated reaction processes are yet to be fully understood. In this study, batch experiments coupled with geochemical, spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermodynamic analyses were conducted to investigate the dynamic coupling of ferrihydrite transformation and the associated As desorption/redistribution mediated by Desulfovibrio vulgaris (D. vulgaris). The results indicated that D. vulgaris could induce ferrihydrite transformation via S2−-driven and direct reduction processes. In the absence of SO4 2−, D. vulgaris directly reduced ferrihydrite, and As desorption and re-sorption occurred simultaneously during the partial transformation of ferrihydrite to magnetite. The increase in SO4 2− loading promoted the S2−-driven reduction of ferrihydrite and accelerated the subsequent mineralogical transformation. In the low and medium SO4 2− treatments, ferrihydrite was completely transformed to a mixture of magnetite and mackinawite, which increased the fraction of As in the residual phase and stabilized As. In the high SO4 2− treatment, although the replacement of ferrihydrite by only mackinawite also increased the fraction of As in the residual phase, 22.1% of the total As was released into the solution due to the poor adsorption affinity of As to mackinawite and the conversion of As5+ to As3+. The mechanisms of ferrihydrite reduction, mineralogy transformation, and As mobilization and redistribution mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria are closely related to the surrounding SO4 2− loadings. These results advance our understanding of the biogeochemical behavior of Fe, S, and As, and are helpful for the risk assessment and remediation of As contamination.

Abstract:The association of poorly crystalline iron (hydr)oxides with organic matter (OM), such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), exerts a profound effect on Fe and C cycles in soils and sediments, and their behaviors under sulfate-reducing conditions involve complicated mineralogical transformations. However, how different loadings and types of EPS and water chemistry conditions affect the sulfidation still lacks quantitative and systematic investigation. We here synthesized a set of ferrihydrite-organic matter (Fh-OM) coprecipitates with various model compounds for plant and microbial exopolysaccharides (polygalacturonic acids, alginic acid, and xanthan gum) and bacteriogenic EPS (extracted from Bacillus subtilis). Combining wet chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopic techniques, we systematically studied the impacts of C and S loadings by tracing the temporal evolution of Fe mineralogy and speciation in aqueous and solid phases. Our results showed that the effect of added OM on sulfidation of Fh-OM coprecipitates is interrelated with the amount of loaded sulfide. Under low sulfide loadings (S(-II)/Fe < 0.5), transformation to goethite and lepidocrocite was the main pathway of ferrihydrite sulfidation, which occurs more strongly at pH 6 compared to that at pH 7.5, and it was promoted and inhibited at low and high C/Fe ratios, respectively. While under high sulfide loadings (S(-II)/Fe > 0.5), the formation of secondary Fe-S minerals such as mackinawite and pyrite dominated ferrihydrite sulfidation, and it was inhibited with increasing C/Fe ratios. Furthermore, all three synthetic EPS proxies unanimously inhibited mineral transformation, while the microbiogenic EPS has a more potent inhibitory effect than synthetic EPS proxies compared at equivalent C/Fe loadings. Collectively, our results suggest that the quantity and chemical characteristics of the associated OM have a strong and nonlinear influence on the extent and pathways of mineralogical transformations of Fh-OM sulfidation.
Sunlight-Induced Interfacial Electron Transfer of Ferrihydrite under Oxic Conditions: Mineral Transformation and Redox Active Species Production.

Abstract:Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation under anoxic conditions has been intensively studied, while such mechanisms are insufficient to be applied in oxic environments with depleted Fe(II). Here, we investigated expanded pathways of sunlight-driven ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of dissolved oxygen, without initial addition of dissolved Fe(II). We found that sunlight significantly facilitated the transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite compared to that under dark conditions. Redox active species (hole-electron pairs, reactive radicals, and Fe(II)) were produced from the ferrihydrite interface via the photoinduced electron transfer processes. Experiments with systematically varied wet chemistry conditions probed the relative contributions of three pathways for the production of hydroxyl radicals: (1) oxidation of water (5.0%); (2) reduction of dissolved oxygen (40.9%); and (3) photolysis of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes (54.1%). Results also showed superoxide radicals as the main oxidant for Fe(II) reoxidation under acidic conditions, thus promoting the ferrihydrite transformation. The presence of inorganic ions (chloride, sulfate, and nitrate) did not only affect the hydrolysis and precipitation of Fe(III) but also the generation of radicals via photoinduced charge transfer reactions. The involvement of redox active species and the accompanying mineral transformations would exert a profound effect on the fate of multivalent elements and organic contaminants in aquatic environments.
Influence of Silicates on the Stability and Reduction of Ferrous Sulfide in Water

Abstract:In natural water environments, ferrous sulfide (FeS) is often influenced by silicates, the most abundant group of minerals in Earth's crust. The mechanism by which silicates affect pollutant removal by FeS, however, remains unclear. This study shows that silicates alter the surface charge of FeS, increasing electrostatic repulsion between particles, and forming a siloxane film through Fe-O-Si bonding, enhancing spatial resistance. These combined effects significantly improve the stability and antioxidant properties of FeS. In the presence of silicate, the hydrodynamic diameter of FeS is still about 200 nm after 24 h storage. However, silicates inhibit the release of divalent iron ions from FeS, forming complexes that reduce its efficiency in removing Cr(VI). Among the silicates tested, sodium disilicate had the strongest inhibitory effect, reducing removal efficiency by 44 %. Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions form calcium/magnesium silicate precipitates on the FeS surface, disrupting the stabilizing effects of sodium silicate and sodium disilicate, leading to FeS re-stabilization and agglomeration. Additionally, the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+ reduced the inhibitory effect of these silicates on FeS's ability to remove contaminants. Under this influence, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by FeS was improved (5-15 %). Notably, hydrophobic methyl silicates effectively resisted interference from Ca2+ and Mg2+. This study not only reveals the mechanisms by which different silicates interact with FeS but also provides guidance for developing silicate-stabilized ironsulfur-based materials for environmental applications.
Labile Fe(III) from sorbed Fe(II) oxidation is the key intermediate in Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation

Abstract:Ferrihydrite (Fh) is a major Fe(III)-(oxyhydr)oxide nanomineral distinguished by its poor crystallinity and thermodynamic metastability. While it is well known that in suboxic conditions aqueous Fe(II) rapidly catalyzes Fh transformation to more stable crystalline Fe(III) phases such as lepidocrocite (Lp) and goethite (Gt), because of the low solubility of Fe(III) the mass transfer pathways enabling these rapid transformations have remained unclear for decades. Here, using a selective extractant, we isolated and quantified a critical labile Fe(III) species, one that is more reactive than Fe(III) in Fh, formed by the oxidation of aqueous Fe(II) on the Fh surface. Experiments that compared time-dependent concentrations of solid-associated Fe(II) and this labile Fe(III) against the kinetics of phase transformation showed that its accumulation is directly related to Lp/Gt formation in a manner consistent with the classical nucleation theory. 57Fe isotope tracer experiments confirm the oxidized Fe(II) origin of labile Fe(III). The transformation pathway as well as the accelerating effect of Fe(II) can now all be explained on a unified basis of the kinetics of Fe(III) olation and oxolation reactions necessary to nucleate and sustain growth of Lp/Gt products, rates of which are greatly accelerated by labile Fe(III).
Oxidation and incorporation of adsorbed antimonite during iron(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of ferrihydrite

Abstract:The toxicity and mobility of antimony (Sb) are strongly influenced by the redox transformation of widely spread 2-line ferrihydrite (Fh) in natural soils and sediments. This study investigated the transformation and redistribution of adsorbed antimonite (Sb(III)) during Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of Fh under anaerobic conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and synchrotron based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were utilized to characterize the mineralogy and morphology of generated minerals as well as the speciation of Sb and Fe. Chemical analysis and Sb LIII-edge XANES spectra demonstrated that a great part of Sb(III) (80%‐90%) was oxidized to Sb(V) by reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of Fh. Chemical extraction results showed that the mobility of Sb was significantly reduced with 50%–70% of initially adsorbed Sb(III) transformed to phosphate-unextractable phase. Antimony K-edge EXAFS analysis showed the SbO6 octahedra were incorporated into secondary minerals by substituting the Fe atoms. Our findings shed new light on the understanding of the geochemical behavior of Sb(III) under anoxic conditions.

Abstract:The colloidal stability of carbon nanomaterials is a key factor controlling their fate and bioavailability in natural aquatic systems. The authors report that graphene oxide nanoparticles could be destabilized in reducing aqueous solutions containing a low concentration (0.5mM) of sulfide, a naturally occurring reductant. Spectroscopic characterization using combined X-ray photoelectron, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and Raman analyses revealed that the surface oxygen-containing groups (mainly epoxy groups) of graphene oxide were significantly reduced after reacting with sodium sulfide. The destabilization of graphene oxide was likely caused by the enhanced surface hydrophobicity of the reduced graphene oxide, whereas electrostatic repulsion played a minimal role. Solution pH was found to affect both the deoxygenation process and the aggregation behavior of graphene oxide. Coexisting humic acid reduced the reaction efficiency and stabilized graphene oxide through steric hindrance. These findings suggest for the first time that the colloidal behavior of carbon nanomaterials might change drastically when they enter natural reducing environments containing sulfide such as anaerobic aquifers and sediments. Impact of redox fluctuations on microbe-mediated elemental sulfur disproportionation and coupled redox cycling of iron

Abstract:Elemental sulfur (S 0 ) plays a vital role in the coupled cycling of sulfur and iron, which in turn affects the transformation of carbon and various pollutants. These processes have been well characterized under static anoxic or oxic conditions, however, how the natural redox fluctuations affect the bio-mediated sulfur cycling and coupled iron cycling remain enigmatic. The present work examined S 0 disproportionation as driven by natural microbial communities under fluctuating redox conditions and the contribution of S 0 disproportionation to ferrihydrite transformation. Samples were incubated at either neutral or alkaline pH values, applying sequential anaerobic, aerobic and anaerobic conditions over 60 days. Under anaerobic conditions, S 0 was found to undergo disproportionation to sulfate and sulfide, which subsequently reduced ferrihydrite at both pH 7.4 and 9.5. Ferrihydrite promoted S 0 disproportionation by scavenging biogenic sulfide and maintaining a suitable degree of sulfate formation. After an oxic period, during the subsequent anoxic incubation, bioreduction of sulfate occurred and the biogenic sulfide reduced iron (hydr)oxides at a rate approximately 25 % lower than that observed during the former anoxic period. A 16S rDNA-based microbial community analysis revealed changes in the microbial community in response to the redox fluctuations, implying an intimate association with the coupled cycling of sulfur and iron. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses confirmed the S 0 -mediated transformation of ferrihydrite to crystalline iron (hydr)oxide minerals such as lepidocrocite and magnetite and the formation of iron sulfides precipitated under fluctuating redox conditions. Finally, a reaction mechanism based on mass balance was proposed, demonstrating that bio-mediated sulfur transformation maintained a sustainable redox reaction with iron (hydr)oxides under fluctuating anaerobic-aerobic-anaerobic conditions tested in this study. Altogether, the finding of our study is critical for obtaining a more complete understanding of the dynamics of iron redox reactions and pollutant transformation in sulfur-rich aquatic environments.

Mechanistic insights into Fe3O4-mediated inhibition of H2S gas production in sludge anaerobic digestion

Abstract:The addition of iron-based conductive materials has been extensively validated as a highly effective approach to augment methane generation from anaerobic digestion (AD) process. In this work, it was additionally discovered that Fe3O4 notably suppressed the production of hazardous H2S gas during sludge AD. As the addition of Fe3O4 increased from 0 to 20 g/L, the accumulative H2S yields decreased by 89.2 % while the content of element sulfur and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) respectively increased by 55.0 % and 30.4 %. Mechanism analyses showed that the added Fe3O4 facilitated sludge conductive capacity, and boosted the efficiency of extracellular electron transfer, which accelerated the bioprocess of sulfide oxidation. Although Fe3O4 can chemically oxidize sulfide to elemental sulfur, microbial oxidation plays a major role in reducing H2S accumulation. Moreover, the released iron ions reacted with soluble sulfide, which promoted the chemical equilibrium of sulfide species from H2S to metal sulfide. Microbial analysis showed that some SRBs (i.e., Desulfomicrobium and Defluviicoccus) and SOB (i.e., Sulfuritalea) changed into keystone taxa (i.e., connectors and module hubs) in the reactor with Fe3O4 addition, showing that the functions of sulfate reduction and sulfur oxidation may play important roles in Fe3O4-present system. Fe3O4 presence also increased the content of functional genes encoding sulfide quinone reductase and flavocytochrome c sulfidedehydrogenase (e.g., Sqr and Fcc) that could oxidize sulfide to sulfur. The impact of other iron-based conductive material (i.e., zero-valent iron) was also verified, and the results showed that it could also significantly reduce H2S production. These findings provide new insights into the effect of iron-based conductive materials on anaerobic process, especially sulfur conversion.

Abstract:Molybdenum (Mo), a redox-sensitive trace metal, plays an important role in recording ancient oxygenation and deoxygenation events as a paleoredox proxy. The mobility and reactivity of Mo in aqueous conditions are closely tied to the chemistry of reduced sulfur and iron species. However, our current knowledge on the formation, structure, stability, and condensation pathways of FeMoS clusters in aqueous settings remains limited, which has driven the current study. In this study, we conducted systematic experiments investigating the interactions between dissolved Mo (initially introduced as molybdate, MoO 4 2− , or tetrathiomolybdate, MoS 4 2− ), ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ), and sulfide (ΣH 2 S aq ) in variously defined abiotic sulfidic systems to determine the external conditions (i.e., pH, and reactant concentrations and ratios) necessary for the formation of solid-phase Fe-Mo sulfides. Solution samples of each system were monitored using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV–vis) to track the degree of thiolation of dissolved Mo species. Precipitates were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to determine their elemental compositions and valences, and structure (i.e., crystalline or amorphous), respectively. All FeMoS precipitates were amorphous and contained 76–90% Mo(IV) and 10–24% Mo(V) with a trend toward lower Mo(IV):Mo(V) ratios with increasing pH. The degree of Mo thiolation, which was strongly dependent on solution pH and Fe 2+ concentrations, greatly affected the amount of Mo sequestered (i.e., an increased degree of Mo thiolation in solution led to an increased amount of Mo in the final FeMoS precipitate). These findings suggest that changes in pH and Fe 2+ concentrations may be responsible for the sulfide-independent variations in Mo behavior observed in euxinic basins.

Abstract:Substitution of aluminum under natural environmental conditions has been proven to inhibit the transformation of weakly crystalline iron (oxyhydr)-oxides towards well crystalline iron oxides, thereby enhancing their long-term stability. However, exploration on the role of aluminum substitution in bacteria-mediated iron oxides transformation is relatively lacking, especially in the anaerobic underground condition where iron (oxyhydr)-oxides are easy to reduced. In this study, we selected four different levels of substitution aluminum prevalent in iron oxides under natural conditions, which are 0 mol%, 10 mol%, 20 mol%, and 30 mol% (mol Al/mol (Al + Fe)) respectively. With the presence of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, we conducted a 15-day anaerobic microcosm experiment in simulated groundwater conditions. The experiment data suggested that aluminum substitution result in a decrease in bio-reduction rate constants of ferrihydrite from 0.24 in 0 mol% Al to 0.17 in 30 mol% Al. Besides, when containing substituted aluminum, secondary minerals produced by biological reduction of ferrihydrite changed from magnetite to akaganeite. These results were attributed to the surface coverage of Al during the reduction process, which affects the contact between S. oneidensis MR-1 and the unexposed Fe(III), thus inhibiting the further reduction of ferrihydrite. Since iron (oxyhydr)-oxides exhibit a strong affinity on multiple kinds of pollutants, results in this study may contribute to predicting the migration and preservation of contaminants in groundwater systems.
