Abstract:The effective functioning of gas turbines is highly dependent on the efficiency of the high-pressure turbine (HPT), which is responsible for extracting energy from the combustion gases. This study aims to optimize the geometric characteristics of both stationary and moving blades in the first and second stages of a high-pressure turbine (HPT) to directly enhance the overall performance of the gas turbine. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to fully study how blade stagger, intake angle, and exit angle affect polytropic efficiency. Optimization is facilitated by modeling the objective functions of design variables using the Design of Experiments (DOE) method in an iterative approach. Utilizing a genetic algorithm (GA), the torque, power, and polytropic efficiency are iteratively adjusted to optimize their values. This gives us important information about how to design things in the best way. The results highlight a direct correlation, indicating that an increase in the pressure ratio is directly linked to a rise in the mass flow rate of the turbine. As a result, turbines experience shocks at different running speeds. Importantly, the mass flow rate remains stable until a sudden increase in operating speed occurs, leading to a decrease in the mass flow rate due to intensified shocks. The results emphasize the significance of stagger, inlet, and outlet angles in turbine performance. The iterative optimization approach results in substantial improvements, with torque increasing by 8.4%, power increasing by 0.69%, and polytropic efficiency improving by 1.2%. This work showcases the effectiveness of the iterative approach using CFD, DOE, and GA strategies, illustrating their collective impact on enhancing turbine performance.
