Abstract:The tightly focused field of an incident light beam through cubic phase modulation has been investigated by vectorial diffraction theory. For different modulation index of cubic phase and polarization states of the incident light, the focused fields have been presented. The results show that the Airy-like field can be produced by cubic phase modulation under high numerical aperture (NA) optical system. Intensity pattern and length of the main lobe are depended on modulation index for the spatial uniform polarization, and the Airy-like field is affected by polarization state for the spatial nonuniform polarization. It is helpful to structure new optical fields in optical manipulation, optical imaging, and surface plasma controlling.

Abstract:We propose a new kind of light beam with both autofocusing ability and radial-variant distribution of polarization states, named radial-variant vector circular Airy beam (RVCAB). The polarization transitions in the focus of RVCABs are simulated based on vectorial angular spectrum formalism and theoretically explained by Stokes parameters. Our results reveal the dependence of the pure polarization state near the focus on the distribution of polarization states in the initial plane, which may lead to manipulation of the polarization state near the focus via controlling the distribution of polarization states in the initial plane.

Abstract:The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method was used to simulate the propagation of P polarized light Gaussian beam in a single subwavelength metallic(Ag)slit surrounded by gratings.Because of the effect of surface plasmons wave,slit with symmetric grating can realize symmetric diffraction,and special asymmetric structure can achieve off-angle beaming phenomenon.Through formula Derivation and Helmholtz reciprocity theorem,devices for parallel beam of P polarized light could be designed.With the Gaussian beam's divergence and near-field distribution,the structural parameters of devices for Gaussian beam shrinks by 12%.On the basis of optimizating some other structures parameters,the design of symmetric diffracted and off-angle beaming effect device for 633 nm Gaussian beam were achieved.

Abstract:Needle beams have received widespread attention due to their unique characteristics of high intensity, small focal size, and extended depth of focus (DOF). Here, a single-layer all-dielectric metalens based on Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) was used to efficiently generate and focus an azimuthally polarized vortex beam at the same time. Then, additional phase or amplitude modulation was respectively adopted to work with the metalens to produce optical needles. By decorating the PB metalens with the binary optical element (BOE), an optical needle with full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.47 λ and DOF of 3.42 λ could be obtained. By decorating the PB metalens with an annular aperture, an optical needle with long DOF (16.4 λ) and subdiffraction size (0.46 λ) could be obtained. It is expected that our work has potential applications in super-resolution imaging, photolithography, and particle trapping.

Abstract:We show that under tight focusing conditions, arbitrarily rotating the longitudinally polarized optical needle in space is possible. Applying the Richards and Wolf vector diffraction methods, the explicit expressions underlying the simultaneous control depth of focus (DoF), intensity suppression of the sidelobes, as well as the orientation of the optical needle can be obtained, and then the strength vectors of the three-dimensional electromagnetic fields can be calculated. Calculations reveal that the sidelobe suppression ratio reaches 5.35% of the principal lobe, the optimal DoF is 5.1λ, and the maximum length is about 18.2λ. In addition, we specify the necessary conditions for rotating the sub-wavelength sized optical needle in the longitudinal field. Such an optical needle with controllable length, purity, and orientation can provide a flexible approach and additional degree of freedom for 3D precise fabrication and some other potential application areas.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, kind of partially coherent vector beam called the partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam (PCRPCAB). The PCRPCAB inherits the autofocusing ability of the radially polarized circular Airy beam (RPCAB) and can create an optical potential well at the center of the beam, whose depth can be adjusted by changing the coherent width. We find that, as coherent width decreases, the intensity becomes higher in the dark notch caused by the polarization singularity, and the singularity of the degree of polarization (DOP) remains along propagation, with its waist controllable by the coherent width. Our results make the PCRPCAB a good candidate for optical micromanipulation, disordered optical lattices, etc. (C) 22020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Recently many ideas have been proposed for the use of a longitudinal field for particle acceleration, fluorescent imaging, second-harmonic generation and Raman spectroscopy. A few methods to enhance the longitudinal field component have been suggested, but all have insufficient optical efficiency and non-uniform axial field strength. Here we report a new method that permits the combination of very unusual properties of light in the focal region, permitting the creation of a ‘pure’ longitudinal light beam with subdiffraction beam size (0.43λ). This beam is non-diffracting; that is, it propagates without divergence over a long distance (of about 4λ) in free space. This is achieved by focusing a radially polarized Bessel–Gaussian beam with a combination of a binary-phase optical element and a high-numerical-aperture lens. This binary optics works as a special polarization filter enhancing the longitudinal component.
Optimizing Airy Needle-like Beams for Long-Range Axial Manipulation and Super-Resolution Imaging

Abstract:Realizing high-quality needle-like beams is crucial for various advanced applications such as microfabrication, super-resolution imaging, and micromanipulation. Here, we report a reliable method to achieve valuable Airy needle-like beams (ANBs) distinguished by both a large depth of focus and a high aspect ratio. This is accomplished by individually modulating and optimizing the amplitude of each ring of circular Airy beams. The proposed iterative algorithm can efficiently optimize these amplitude-modulation coefficients. In the focusing regions, the resulting ANBs exhibit remarkable properties, including axial flat-top (uniform) intensity distribution, extended depth of focus, high aspect ratio, and smaller focal spots. We further experimentally demonstrated that these characteristics endow ANBs with superior capabilities for multiplane microparticle trapping, axial transportation, and super-resolution imaging, particularly when integrated into optical manipulation systems and scanning confocal microscopy setups. The results suggest a wide range of potential applications of ANBs in optical manipulation, imaging, and laser writing.

Abstract:We found a new type of noncircular symmetrical Airy beam called an elliptical Airy beam (EAB). Using a simple single-pixel checkerboard hologram method, we achieved the EAB in an experiment. We observed its unique property of double focusing and the ability of the energy to flow towards the endpoints of the long axis during propagation. These particular properties will have some potential applications.

Abstract:We experimentally generate an Airy beam with polarization structure while keeping its original amplitude and phase profile intact. This class of Airy beam preserves the acceleration properties. By monitoring their initial polarization structure we have provided insight concerning the self-healing mechanism of Airy beams. We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the self-healing polarization properties of the space-variant polarized Airy beams. Amplitude as well as the polarization structure tends to reform during propagation in spite of the severe truncation of the beam by finite apertures.

Abstract:In this paper, partially coherent radially polarized vortex circular Airy beams (PCRPVCABs) are theoretically and experimentally studied for the first time. Comparing with partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam, the autofocusing ability of PCRPVCAB can be controlled or even enhanced by the topological charge of the vortex phase. Besides, we show a unique distribution of the degree of polarization, vortex-phase induced polarization transition, and the phenomenon of beam spot rotation after the PCRPVCAB passing through a polarizer. Our results make the PCRPVCAB a good candidate for optical micro-manipulation, free-space communications, formation of disordered optical lattices, etc.

Abstract:We design and generate a kind of hybridly polarized vector optical field (VOF) with hyperbolic symmetry for the first time. After tightly focusing the new VOF, an optical needle is achieved with sub-wavelength transverse size (similar to 0.3 lambda(2)), and the depth of focus (DOF) is about twice as large as the common optical fields such as linearly, circularly, radially and azimuthally polarized optical fields. Meanwhile, highly purified transversely polarized electric and magnetic needles can be achieved simultaneously, which is also superior to other VOFs. When inserting a binary phase mask withNconcentric belts, ultra-long optical needles can be realized by tightly focusing the hybridly polarized VOF using the genetic algorithm. The DOFs are 4.68 lambda, 5.95 lambda, 10.01 lambda, 12.16 lambda and 14.41 lambda whenN= 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, respectively. As the VOFs used in shaping optical needles were always limited to cylindrical VOFs in previous research, this kind of non-cylindrical VOF can provide a new choice in focal engineering. Moreover, the highly purified transversely polarized optical needles can be applied in various areas, especially in utilizing optical materials or instruments responsive to the transverse optical field only.

Abstract:Researches on Airy beams have grown explosively since the first demonstration in 2007 due to the distinguishing properties of nondiffraction, transverse acceleration and self-healing. To date, a simple and compact approach for generating Airy beams in high quality and efficiency has remained challenging. Here, we propose and demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) polarization Airy mask (PAM) featured by spatially variant LC azimuthal director. The PAM is fabricated through photoaligning LC via a polarization-sensitive alignment agent suophonic azo dye SD1. Thanks to the special design, a novel feature of polarization-controllable switch between dual Airy beams of orthogonal circular polarization is presented. The molecular-level continuity of LC director significantly improves the quality and efficiency of resultant Airy beams. Besides, the PAM can handle intense light due to the absence of absorptive electrodes. Additional merits of compact size, low cost and broad wavelength tolerance are also exhibited. This work settles a fundamental requirement for Airy beam applications of optical manipulations, biology science and even some uncharted territories.
Optical Bessel-like Beams with Engineered Axial Phase and Intensity Distribution

Abstract:Bessel beams are known for their property of maintaining propagation-invariant transverse intensity distribution. The true Bessel beams has unlimited energy, however the experimental realization of limited energy Bessel-like beams provides almost diffraction-free beams over a certain distance. These beams are applicable to microfabrication, particle manipulation etc. where long and narrow intense beam is needed. A type of laser beams that maintains narrow intensity peak for long distances are often called optical needles. In this paper we propose a construction of an optical needle using a superposition of vector Bessel beams and for flexible engineering of axial intensity profile. We investigate both theoretically and experimentally generation of various optical beams of different axial profiles, lengths, beam widths etc. We use a spatial light modulator as a toy model of an optical element to shape the spatial spectrum of the beam. Moreover, we demonstrate distortions introduced into the optical needle by a planar interface between two dielectric media: spherical aberration and astigmatism due to the nonzero inclination angle and discuss ways to correct them.

Selectively Transporting Small Chiral Particles with Circularly Polarized Airy Beams.

Abstract:Based on the full wave simulation, we demonstrate that a circularly polarized vector Airy beam can selectively transport small chiral particles along a curved trajectory via the chirality-tailored optical forces. The transverse optical forces can draw the chiral particles with different particle chirality towards or away from the intensity maxima of the beam, leading to the selective trapping in the transverse plane. The transversely trapped chiral particles are then accelerated along a curved trajectory of the Airy beam by the chirality-tailored longitudinal scattering force, rendering an alternative way to sort and/or transport chiral particles with specified helicity. Finally, the underlying physics of the chirality induced transverse trap and de-trap phenomena are examined by the analytical theory within the dipole approximation.

Abstract:Bessel beams generated via axicons are widely used for various applications like optical tweezers or laser microfabrication of transparent materials. The specific intensity profile having high aspect ratio of beam width and length in turn generates high aspect ratio void that resembles a needle. In contrast to commonly generated Bessel beam that has a fixed axial intensity distribution. We present a novel method to engineer an optical needle that can have an arbitrary axial intensity distribution via superposition of different cone angle Bessel beams. We analytically describe spatial spectra of an optical needle having arbitrary axial intensity distribution. We also demonstrate a superposition of independent optical needles and analyze the physical limitations to observe well separated optical needles as they are influence by mutual interference of the individual beams. In order to verify our theoretical and numerical results we generate controllable spatial arrays of individual beams with various numbers and spatial separations by altering a spectrum of incoming laser beam via spatial light modulator. Lastly, we numerically examine distortions caused by propagation through planar air-dielectric interface and show compensation method by appropriately modifying spectral masks.

Abstract:In the paper, a multi-belt complex phase filter was optimized by increasing the number of belts and changing phase and amplitude parameters of the filter. By focusing radially polarized sinh-Gaussian beams in single objective system with high-NA lens, longitudinal polarized optical needles were obtained with super-resolution in focal plane. And the super-resolution optical needle owned 36.6λ depth of focus and 0.42λ of full–width at half-maximum. The aspect ratio of the obtained optical needle was 87.14. The beam quality reached to 87.7%. The results demonstrated that the optimized multi-belt complex phase filter can lengthen depth of focus and compress transverse size simulta-neously. The obtained longitudinally polarization optical needles can be used in the fields of optical data storage, super-resolution imaging, particle trapping, nanolithogra-phy and so on.
