Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, kind of partially coherent vector beam called the partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam (PCRPCAB). The PCRPCAB inherits the autofocusing ability of the radially polarized circular Airy beam (RPCAB) and can create an optical potential well at the center of the beam, whose depth can be adjusted by changing the coherent width. We find that, as coherent width decreases, the intensity becomes higher in the dark notch caused by the polarization singularity, and the singularity of the degree of polarization (DOP) remains along propagation, with its waist controllable by the coherent width. Our results make the PCRPCAB a good candidate for optical micromanipulation, disordered optical lattices, etc. (C) 22020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We have proposed a kind of modified circular Airy beam (MCAB) based upon a modification of the Fourier spectrum of circular Airy beams (CAB) in this paper. Unlike most abruptly autofocusing beams, the position of peak intensity of MCAB can be moved to any rings behind. Two apodization parameters are introduced to describe the propagation characteristics of MCAB. It is found that the focal position, focal trajectory and the size of focal spot do not change with the apodization parameters; but the abruptly autofocusing property will be greatly enhanced if appropriately apodization parameters are chosen. Comparing with the common CAB and the previous blocked CAB, the MCAB shows better abruptly autofocusing property. It may have more applications in various fields. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the propagation characteristics of the circular Airy beam (CAB) when its first few light rings are blocked. It is shown that the focus position of the blocked CAB will remain the same, and its abruptly autofocusing property will be enhanced. Since the maximum focal intensity almost remains the same when the first ring is blocked, a better result of abruptly autofocusing property can be obtained when only the first ring is eliminated. Compared with the common CAB with a same hollow region, the intensity of the blocked CAB will focus at a different position and the intensity will be increased much larger than the common CAB. Abstract:In this paper, partially coherent radially polarized vortex circular Airy beams (PCRPVCABs) are theoretically and experimentally studied for the first time. Comparing with partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam, the autofocusing ability of PCRPVCAB can be controlled or even enhanced by the topological charge of the vortex phase. Besides, we show a unique distribution of the degree of polarization, vortex-phase induced polarization transition, and the phenomenon of beam spot rotation after the PCRPVCAB passing through a polarizer. Our results make the PCRPVCAB a good candidate for optical micro-manipulation, free-space communications, formation of disordered optical lattices, etc.
Abruptly Autofocusing Property and Optical Manipulation of Circular Airy Beams

Abstract:By employing the angular spectrum representation, we successfully derive the partial-wave expansion coefficients of the circular Airy beams (CABs) with different polarizations, based on which the scattering of a spherical particle in the CABs is solved exactly. Special attention is focused on exploring the potential applications of the CABs in the abruptly autofocusing (AAF) property and optical manipulation of microparticle by optical force. It is found that both the linear and circular polarizations are the best candidates to implement the AAF property robustly against strong disturbance by a large-sized particle. In addition, although the CABs can be intensively focused to a small region, resulting in an abrupt increase of light intensity by two orders of magnitude at the focal point and enabling three-dimensional stable trapping of a Rayleigh particle near the focal point, the usual CABs fail to generate an optical force outweighing the Brownian force to achieve a stable transverse trapping in the region before the focal point. On the other hand, a Mie particle can be confined transversely in the primary ring and accelerated along the curved trajectory of CABs to the focal point, then pushed further all the way through the focal point rather than being trapped therein, and eventually accelerated further along a straight trajectory in the direction of light propagation over 100 wavelengths, due to the weak diffraction characteristic of a morphed Bessel-like beam of CABs. The exotic curved-straight trajectory transport of particles by the CABs may find applications in the case where the transport path is partly blocked.

Abstract:Dark hollow beams (DHBs) have great potential in the applications of optical manipulation, and the generation of DHBs is still a challenging and rewarding issue. In this paper, we present a beam shaping system for generating DHBs. The proposed system is composed of a freeform lens array and a non-classical room system which has a constant focal length but various image locations. The DHBs with a well-controlled intensity profile generated by the proposed system is not sensitive to the change of the intensity distribution of the incident beam, which allows flexible choices of light sources. Moreover, the annular pattern produced by the DHB remains unchanged when the image plane is moved a long distance of 17mm, and the energy efficiency of the beam shaping system is greater than 90% when Fresnel loss is considered. The proposed beam shaping system endows the generated DHBs with new properties and may have great potential in the field of optical tweezers and atom guides. Abstract:The radiation force of circular Airy beams (CAB) on a dielectric Rayleigh particle is investigated in this paper. Our results show that the CAB can be used to trap the particle whose refractive index is larger than the ambient at different positions along the beam axis. Comparing with the Gaussian beam under the same conditions, the longitudinal and the transverse gradient force of CAB on the Rayleigh particle are increased, and the particle can be trapped more stable. Our analyses also demonstrate that the trapping properties of CAB can be modulated by controlling corresponding parameters of CAB. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose a new kind of light beam with both autofocusing ability and radial-variant distribution of polarization states, named radial-variant vector circular Airy beam (RVCAB). The polarization transitions in the focus of RVCABs are simulated based on vectorial angular spectrum formalism and theoretically explained by Stokes parameters. Our results reveal the dependence of the pure polarization state near the focus on the distribution of polarization states in the initial plane, which may lead to manipulation of the polarization state near the focus via controlling the distribution of polarization states in the initial plane.
Circular Airy Beam with an Arbitrary Conical Angle Beyond the Paraxial Approximation

Abstract:An arbitrary conical angle is introduced to the circular Airy beam (CAB) beyond the paraxial approximation, with the possibility to demonstrate its obvious tunability for the propagation properties of the CAB. The expressions are worked out to describe the electric field based on the angular spectrum representation, where a closed-form approximation of the angular spectrum is derived by using the stationary phase method. It is found that the nonparaxiality becomes obvious for large conical angles. In particular, the field intensity at the focal point can be enhanced about 10 times with respect to the conventional CAB by simply tailoring the conical angle. Meanwhile, the longitudinal component of the field is enhanced and gradually plays a leading role as the conical angle is increased. Moreover, the longitudinal gradient of the field intensity is also enlarged for large conical angles, suggesting a stable optical trapping for microparticles, which may find many applications in optical manipulations.

Abstract:The radiation force of modified circular Airy beams (MCAB) exerted on both a high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle are analyzed in this paper. Our results show that the two kinds of particles can be simultaneously stably trapped by MCAB at different positions. Compared with the common circular Airy beams (CAB) with the same parameters, trapping forces on the two kinds of particles are greatly increased because of the enhanced abruptly autofocusing property and the appearance of hollow region in MCAB. The trapping forces can be modulated by varying parameters of MCAB, and it is important to choose appropriate parameters to trap particles in practice. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:To improve the abruptly autofocusing property of circular Airy beam, we propose a method to generate multiple circular Airy beams (MCAB) carrying lens phase factors using a spatial light modulator (SLM). The propagation dynamics of this kind of beam is theoretically simulated, as well as experimentally verified. It is shown that four identical beams are produced symmetrically and they can move toward the center simultaneously. By changing the lens phase information encoded in the SLM, we can achieve different focal positions and focal intensities as we want. With the same parameters, compared with a single circular Airy beam (SCAB), there are two focal planes and the abruptly autofocusing property can be greatly enhanced. It may have some applications in various fields.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the propagation characteristics of elliptical Airy vortex beams (EAVBs) with a circular concentric vortex. It is found that EAVBs inherit the abruptly autofocusing properties of the circular Airy beams (CABs), but EAVBs will have a better autofocusing performance than circular Airy vortex beams (CAVBs) under certain conditions. It is also found that the initial m-order concentric vortex of EAVBs splits into vertical bar m vertical bar first-order vortices at the autofocusing plane, and the focusing pattern splits into vertical bar m vertical bar + 1 bright spots with the pattern's tilting direction related to the sign of m [m is the topological charge (TC) of the vortex]. These characteristics of EAVBs may have potential applications in TC detection, optical micromanipulation, communications, and other fields. (c) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this work, the radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric particle induced by the partially coherent circular Airy beam (PCCAB) is investigated. Our numerical results show that the PCCAB can be used to trap and manipulate particles. The radiation force distribution and trapping stability have been analyzed under different coherent lengths. It is found that, with the increase of the spatial coherent length, the radiation force is increased and the particle can be stably trapped at more points. Therefore, the radiation force as well as the depth of potential well can be effectively modulated by controlling the spatial coherent length in optical micromanipulation. The trapping properties of PCCAB have also been studied under other different parameters, including the scale factor and initial radius.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a type of multi-focus autofocusing beams, circular hyperbolic umbilic beams (CHUBs), based on the double-active variable caustics in catastrophe theory. The mathematical form is more general compared to circular Airy, Pearcey and swallowtail beams. The CHUBs can generate multi-focus at its optical axis, while the on-axis intensity fluctuates up to two orders of magnitude that of the maximum intensity in the initial plane. Using the concept of topographic prominence, we quantify the autofocusing ability. We construct the criteria for selecting the effective foci, and then explore the influence of related parameters. Our findings suggest that the CHUBs could be a suitable tool for multi-particle manipulation, optical tweezers, optical lattices and related applications.

Abstract:We investigated the propagation dynamics of the Circular Airy Beams (CAB) with optical vortices (OVs) by numerical calculation. Comparing to the common CAB, the maximum intensity of CAB with vortices can be increased greatly at the focal plane and its focal intensity profile is doughnut-shaped when an on-axis vortex is imposed. The case for an off-axis OV and multiple OVs have been investigated as well. Abstract:In this paper, we report a new class of autofocusing beams, circular symbolic umbilic beams (CSUBs), based on the catastrophe theory. The analytical propagation expression and the evolution of the 2+1-D SUBs are firstly introduced and then the autofocusing properties of CSUBs are theoretically and experimentally studied in detail, including the amplitude distribution of the light field, the autofocusing capability and the focusing length. Compared with the previous circular Airy, Pearcey or swallowtail beams, CSUBs can focus twice without extra phase term or optical component. The autofocusing capabilities in two focal planes are remarkable as well as comparable and the two focusing lengths are symmetrically distributed around a fixed position. The influences of related parameters on CSUBs are also analyzed. Furthermore, by applying a chirp phase on CSUB, the beam exhibits a thrice focusing behavior during propagation. Our experimental results match well with theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Outer and inner radius of hard-edge annular aperture as well as decay factor as main effection factors for the abruptly autofocusing property of circular Airy beam ( CAB) carrying hard-edge annular aperture arc all considered. Conclusion has been achieved that, putting hard-edge annular aperture on CAB will enhance its first autofocusing peak intensity and suppresses the further autofocusing peak intensity, and its first autofocusing peak intensity will also be generally increased under the condition of different decay factors. These conclusions have potential applications in particle manipulation.

Abstract:We found a new type of noncircular symmetrical Airy beam called an elliptical Airy beam (EAB). Using a simple single-pixel checkerboard hologram method, we achieved the EAB in an experiment. We observed its unique property of double focusing and the ability of the energy to flow towards the endpoints of the long axis during propagation. These particular properties will have some potential applications.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and demonstrate the ring-arrayed Pearcey Gaussian chirp beams (RAPGCBs) synthesized by multiple two-dimensional Pearcey beams. The general analytical formula for the propagation of RAPGCBs is presented. We find that, depending on synthesized number n, the profiles of the beams present different polygonal shapes, and the autofocusing properties can be controlled by chirp factor β. Furthermore, we study the properties of the RAPGCBs carrying optical vortices (OVs). It shows that a single OV or two positive OVs form an autofocusing hollow field, and opposite OVs will annihilate, which results in greatly increased autofocusing ability. Our experimental results agree with the simulations. Such beams have potential applications in particle trapping and biology medical fields.
Propagation Characteristics of Circular Airy Vortex Beams in a Uniaxial Crystal along the Optical Axis

Abstract:Circular airy vortex beams (CAVBs) have attracted much attention due to their "abruptly autofocusing" effect, phase singularity, and their potential applications in optical micromanipulation, communication, etc. In this paper, we numerically investigated the propagation properties of circular airy beams (CABs) imposed with different optical vortices (OVs) along the optical axis of a uniaxial crystal for the first time. Like other common beams, a left-hand circular polarized (LHCP) CAVB, propagating along the optical axis in a uniaxial crystal, can excite a right-hand circular polarized (RHCP) component superimposed with an on-axis vortex of topological charge (TC) number of 2. When the incident beam is an LHCP CAB imposed with an on-axis vortex of TC number of l = 1, both of the two components have an axisymmetric intensity distribution during propagation and form hollow beams near the focal plane because of the phase singularity. The phase pattern shows that the LHCP component carries an on-axis vortex of TC number of l = 1, while the RHCP component carries an on-axis vortex of TC number of l = 3. With a larger TC number (l = 3), the RHCP component has a larger hollow region in the focal plane compared to the LHCP component. We also studied cases of CABs imposed with one and two off-axis OVs. The off-axis OV makes the CAVB's profile remain asymmetric throughout the propagation. As the propagation distance increases, the off-axis OVs move near the center of the beam and overlap, resulting in a special intensity and phase distribution near the focal plane.
