Abstract:Abstract The type of reactions and the availability of monomers for the synthesis of sp 2 -c linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are considerably limited by the irreversibility of the C=C bond. Herein, inspired by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction, two propenone-linked (C=C–C=O) COFs (named Py-DAB and PyN-DAB) are developed based on the base-catalyzed nucleophilic addition reaction of ketone-activated α -H with aromatic aldehydes. The introduction of propenone structure endows COFs with high crystallinity, excellent physicochemical stability, and intriguing optoelectronic properties. Benefitting from the rational design on the COFs skeleton, Py-DAB and PyN-DAB are applied to the extraction of radionuclide uranium. In particular, PyN-DAB shows excellent removal rates (>98%) in four uranium mine wastewater samples. We highlight that such a general strategy can provide a valuable avenue toward various functional porous crystalline materials.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their applications in photocatalysis have been extensively studied, but the instability of imine-linked COFs is an important factor limiting their performance. In this work, two imine-linked COFs were successfully converted to amide-linked COFs through post synthetic modification (PSM). The oxidized COFs presented lower binding energy to O2, exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for oxidation of thioethers and coupling of benzylamines with excellent stability. The present work can serve as a reliable reference for the development of novel highly active and stable COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:A catalytic performance is greatly impacted by the microenvironment surrounding the catalytic centers. However, efforts to modify the microenvironment are primarily directed towards the first coordination spheres, while controlling the secondary coordina-tion spheres is entirely restricted. In this work, a series of porphyrin-based covalent organic frame-works (COFs) with distinct linkage were rationally designed to investigate the structure-property relationship between the secondary coordination spheres of catalytic centers and CO2 photoreduction. The secondary coordination spheres of COFs could be changed readily by manipulating the organic link-age. In photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the COF with beta-ketoenamine as the linkage (NiPor-BDOB) exhib-ited superior activity, selectivity, and stability over its imine-linked counterpart (NiPor-BDA). Experiments and theoretical calculations indicated that the dis-tinct secondary coordination sphere resulted in an electronic density change of Ni centers, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performances. This study highlights the significance of controlling the secondary coordination sphere around the active site.

Abstract:The donor-acceptor covalent organic framework (COF) TTT-DTDA (TTT = thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarbaldehyde and DTDA = 4,4',4 ''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)trianiline) was prepared and found to have long-lived excited states (>100 ms) characterized by transient absorption spectroscopy. These excited-state lifetimes were sufficient to perform the direct photoreduction of uranium at ppm concentration levels. The photoreduction of soluble uranyl species to insoluble reduced uranium products is an attractive separation for uranium, typically accomplished with sacrificial reagents and protective gases. In the case of TTT-DTDA, illumination in aqueous solutions containing only uranyl ions produced crystalline uranyl peroxide species ([UO2 (O-2)]) at the COF that were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The maximum absorption capacity of TTT-DTDA was found to be 123 mg U/g COF at pH 5 after 10 h of illumination in solutions devoid of sacrificial reagents or protective gases. The TTT-DTDA COF was recyclable and maintained high selectivity for uranium in competing ion experiments, which are necessary requirements for a practical uranium extraction strategy based on photochemical uranium reduction.

Abstract:It is generally believed that the electron-withdrawing cyano group in the olefin linkage would inhibit the stability and pi-conjugation of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which raises concerns about their optoelectronic properties. However, the structure-activity relationship between the structure of olefin linkages and properties of COFs is still inconclusive. In this work, imine-, vinylene-, and acrylonitrile-linked COFs with identical triphenyltriazine building blocks were designed and synthesized. Our work demonstrated that construction of acrylonitrile linkages not only enhanced the chemical stability and photostability but also led to remarkable optoelectronic properties with a record fluorescence quantum yield of 35.37% in the solid state. Further, the acrylonitrile linkage endows TTAN-COF/Pt NPs with superior and durable photocatalytic activity in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (11.94 mmol g(-1) h(-1); BET surface area, 739.28 m(2) g(-1)) and aerobic oxidation reaction. This work demonstrates that the acrylonitrile linkage can significantly enhance the optoelectronic properties and photocatalytic activities of COFs compared with the highly pi-conjugated vinylene linkage, providing a valuable reference for the design of optoelectronic functional materials.

Abstract:An innovative approach is presented for synthesizing quinone‐amine‐linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs). DHBQ‐TAPP‐COF, a novel photocatalyst, is synthesized in a one‐step procedure. The photocatalyst features a unique donor–acceptor structure with good carrier separation and stability superior to that of its imine counterpart. DHBQ‐TAPP‐COF is specifically suitable for the efficient, stable, and high‐performance reduction of uranium under harsh conditions. Compared to imine covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the superior stability of amine‐linked COFs renders them more suitable for long‐term harsh real‐world environments. Their numerous amine sites can serve as functional groups or be subjected to post‐modification to further enhance the performance of the material. However, the assortment and abundance of amine‐linked COFs via currently lacking due to restricted monomer varieties and synthetic methods. Herein, this study presents an innovative approach for synthesizing quinone‐amine‐linked COFs by directly combining 2,5‐dihydroxy‐1,4‐benzoquinone (DHBQ) with various amine monomers and introduce a novel photocatalyst, DHBQ‐TAPP‐COF, specifically tailored to efficiently reduce uranium in harsh environments. DHBQ‐TAPP‐COF features a unique donor–acceptor structure, with the DHBQ units serving as acceptors because they contain abundant oxygen atoms that facilitate metal ion coordination, thereby enhancing charge carrier separation, carrier utilization, and uranium reduction efficiency. The quinone‐amine linkages offer improved stability, extended π‐conjugation, heightened local polarity, and conductivity, which enable efficient carrier transfer within the material and thus enhance the overall performance of the uranium photocatalyst. The proposed photocatalyst can efficiently reduce U(VI) without sacrificial agents or decomposition to precipitate UO2 at a recovery rate exceeding 98%. This catalyst provides an efficient and convenient strategy for the stable and high‐performance photocatalytic reduction of uranium.

Abstract:There has been a surge of interest in light-driven chemical transformations using organic photoredox catalysts, whereby a suitable energy alignment and efficient exciton migration are crucial for achieving high efficiency. We show here that covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer the flexibility required to be ideal platforms for photocatalyst design, lending themselves to fine control over photoreactivity. To understand the factors that dictate photoreactivity, we explore a comparative study of a series of porous materials built with amine bonds with varied composition, crystallinity, and topology, in the efficiency of photogenerated reactive oxygen species. Combined spectroscopies, density functional theory calculations, and catalytic evaluations revealed an essential interplay among these parameters and the photoreactivity of the resulting materials. Beyond basic considerations, such as spectral absorption and crystallinity, the material's lattice symmetry has a significant impact on photoreactivity. We anticipate that the structure-performance relationships developed will provide a robust rule of thumb for designing COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are drawing intense attention in heterogenous photocatalysis due to their porous, crystalline, and tailor-made structures. For highly efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion, revealing and modulating active centers in the skeletons of COFs are of great importance but encounter severe challenges. Herein, it is demonstrated that cyano conjugation on a typical β-ketoenamine-linked COF via aldehyde-imine Schiff-base condensation contributes to an enhanced stable photocatalytic H2 -evolution rate of 1.8 mmol h-1 g-1 (λ > 420 nm) with a superior apparent quantum yield of 2.12% at 420 nm, compared to pristine COFs. Both experimental results and density functional theory calculations disclose that the cyano conjugation can efficiently improve photoinduced charge separation and effectively decrease the energy barrier for H-intermediate generation on the carbonyl oxygen sites of the functionalized COFs. These findings present a precise organic functionalization strategy to optimize active centers on COF-based photocatalysts for the practical applications.
Orientation-Dependent Photocatalysis of Imine-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks Based on Thienothiophenes for Oxidation of Amines to Imines

Abstract:Toward visible light photocatalysis, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently garnered growing attention. The effect of different orientations of imine of imine-linked COFs on photocatalysis should be elucidated. Here, two COFs are developed with 2,5-diphenylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DPTT) and 1,3,6,8-tetraphenylpyrene (Py) linked by imine, affording DPTT-Py-COF and Py-DPTT-COF, respectively. Distinctly, DPTT-Py-COF and Py-DPTT-COF have high crystallinity and porosity, paving the way to highly efficient photocatalysis. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that both DPTT-Py-COF and Py-DPTT-COF are of similar bandgaps but of varied energy positions due to the different orientations of imine. Besides, characterizations disclose that DPTT-Py-COF delivers more enhanced charge separation and transfer than Py-DPTT-COF. Probed by the oxidation of amine to imine, DPTT-Py-COF exhibits a blue light photocatalytic performance superior to that of Py-DPTT-COF. DPTT-Py-COF, a highly recyclable photocatalyst, enables the oxidation of various amines to imines with oxygen. This work highlights that tuning the microenvironment of COFs unravels tenable performances in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Three-dimensionalcovalent organic frameworks (3D COFs),with interconnectedpores and exposed functional groups, provide new opportunities forthe design of advanced functional materials through postsyntheticmodification. Herein, we demonstrate the successful postsyntheticannulation of 3D COFs to construct efficient CO2 reductionphotocatalysts. Two 3D COFs, NJU-318 and NJU-319Fe, were initiallyconstructed by connecting hexaphenyl-triphenylene units with pyrene-or Fe-porphyrin-based linkers. Subsequently, the hexaphenyl-triphenylenemoieties within the COFs were postsynthetically transformed into & pi;-conjugatedhexabenzo-trinaphthylene (pNJU-318 and pNJU-319Fe) to enhance visiblelight absorption and CO2 photoreduction activity. The optimizedphotocatalyst, pNJU-319Fe, shows a CO yield of 688 & mu;mol g(-1), representing a 2.5-fold increase compared to thatof unmodified NJU-319Fe. Notably, the direct synthesis of hexabenzo-trinaphthylene-basedCOF catalysts was unsuccessful due to the low solubility of conjugatedlinkers. This study not only provides an effective method to constructphotocatalysts but also highlights the unlimited tunability of 3DCOFs through structural design and postsynthetic modification.

Abstract:Linkage conversion of imine to amide can not only boost the stability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) but also enhance their functionality. However, current methods for generating amide linkages usually involve the use of inorganic oxidants, such as NaClO2 and oxone, which have a severe drawback of functional group incompatibility. In this study, we introduced a novel synthetic strategy to fabricate amide-linked COFs (Am-COFs) through N-heterocyclic carbene-mediated aerobic oxidation of CN bonds in the corresponding imine-linked COFs. This protocol not only featured mild reaction conditions, high crystallinity retention, quantitative conversion efficiency, and generality but, most importantly, delivered great compatibility with functional groups due to the umpolung of imine. Accordingly, we successfully synthesized Am-COFD19 and Am-COFR3, which contained oxidant-susceptible dibenzothiophene and vinyl groups, respectively. Am-COFD19 exhibited excellent photocatalytic dehalogenation activity of α-bromoacetophenone, while Am-COFR3 underwent intramolecular hydroamidation to yield dihydroisoquinolinone-linked 2HQ-COFR3 that has never been reported before. The discovery of this strategy is expected to expedite the application of amide-linked COFs.

Abstract:As we know, the photoelectric properties of the covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be properly adjusted by introducing an electron donor–acceptor (D–A) structure. In here, a two-dimensional D–A type Py-BPDAIP-COF with an excellent photoelectric characteristic was prepared in a post-modified method. Significantly, the introducing of very strong electron-withdrawing pyridinium structure dramatically improve inductive and conjugative effects of the electron acceptor unit of Py-BPDAIP-COF. And the electron-rich pyrene skeleton on the knot of the COF was as an electron donor. Then a strong electron push–pull effect between the donor and acceptor units can be transmitted to the COFs backbone, significantly improving the transfer and separation of light-generated electrons. The Py-BPDAIP-COF showed very excellent photocatalytic activity in visible light-induce aerobic hydroxylation, thiocyanation transformation and oxidative C-H functionalization. Therefore, we design and construct a highly efficient olefin-linked D–A type COF photocatalysts via tuning inductive and conjugative effects of pore wall surface.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an emerging class of organic photocatalysts. However, their complicated structures lead to indeterminacy about photocatalytic active sites and reaction mechanisms. Herein, we use reticular chemistry to construct a family of isoreticular crystalline hydrazide-based COF photocatalysts, with the optoelectronic properties and local pore characteristics of the COFs modulated using different linkers. The excited state electronic distribution and transport pathways in the COFs are probed using a host of experimental methods and theoretical calculations at a molecular level. One of our developed COFs (denoted as COF-4) exhibits a remarkable excited state electron utilization efficiency and charge transfer properties, achieving a record-high photocatalytic uranium extraction performance of ~6.84 mg/g/day in natural seawater among all techniques reported so far. This study brings a new understanding about the operation of COF-based photocatalysts, guiding the design of improved COF photocatalysts for many applications.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising adsorbents for removing heavy metal ions, and have high crystallinity, a porous structure, and conjugated stability. N-containing functional groups are known to have great affinity for uranyl ions. In this work, to explore the peculiarity of the pyridine N structure as an efficient adsorbent, we chose 2,2′-dipyridine-5,5′-diamine (Bpy) and pyridine-2,5′-diamine (Py) as the core skeletons, and 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) as the linker to synthesize two crystalline and stable N-containing COFs named TpBpy and TpPy, respectively, through a facile solvothermal method. Characterization results demonstrated that TpBpy and TpPy possessed regularly growing pore sizes, large specific surface areas and relatively strong thermal resistances. The results of batch experiments showed that both COF materials were capable of the effective removal of uranyl with uptake capacities of 115.45 mg g−1 and 291.79 mg g−1, respectively. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) simulations highlighted the beneficial chelation effect of the double N structure in pyridine monomers for removing uranyl ions. Combining systematic experimental and theoretical analyses, the adsorption process and interaction mode of porous COFs and UO22+ were revealed, to provide predictable support for the application of pyridine N-containing COFs in the field of environmental remediation.

Abstract:Unraveling the robust self-adaptivity and minimal energy-dissipation of soft reticular materials for environmental catalysis presents a compelling yet unexplored avenue. Herein, a top-down strategy, tailoring from the unique linkage basis, flexibility degree, skeleton electronics to trace-guest adaptability, is proposed to fill the understanding gap between micro-soft covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and photocatalytic performance. The thio(urea)-basis-dominated linkage within benzotrithiophene-based COFs induce the framework contraction/swelling (intralayer micro-flexibility) in response to tetrahydrofuran or water. Adaptability of micro-flexible thiourea-COF with pore hydrophilicity not only contributes to the favorable mass transfer, but also enhances the accessible redox active sites, culminating in nearly 100% removal of micropollutant with low-energy dissipation in wastewater. The incorporating urea/thiourea into imine linkage facilitates polarization reduction and exciton dissociation within skeleton wall, inducing strong localization for holes. This transformation facilitates interchain charge transport and unbalanced distribution conducive to oxidative holes-mediated micropollutant decomposition.
