Abstract:Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered significant attention in photocatalysis due to their ease of synthesis and excellent crystallinity. However, there is still limited research on the influence of imine bond orientation on the processes of exciton dissociation and charge carrier separation in COFs. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of two novel COFs with distinct imine bond orientations. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that though the structures of these COFs are similar, their performance in exciton dissociation and electron–hole pair separation varies significantly. The orientation of the imine bond plays a crucial role in inducing local charge polarization and delocalization, thus influencing the efficiency of exciton dissociation and charge separation. Notably, the photocatalytic hydrogen-evolution activity for the COFs with the N-atom orientation in imine bond towards the acceptor is three times higher than that for COFs with the N-atom orientation in imine bond towards the donor. This study provides a clear design strategy for imine-linked COF-based photocatalysts and advances the development of COFs in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their applications in photocatalysis have been extensively studied, but the instability of imine-linked COFs is an important factor limiting their performance. In this work, two imine-linked COFs were successfully converted to amide-linked COFs through post synthetic modification (PSM). The oxidized COFs presented lower binding energy to O2, exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for oxidation of thioethers and coupling of benzylamines with excellent stability. The present work can serve as a reliable reference for the development of novel highly active and stable COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Owing to the high structural designability and functional tunability, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a promising platform for designing brilliant photocatalyst candidates. However, their photocatalytic performances are still hindered by insufficient separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers. The ordered alignment of electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) in two-dimensional COFs can promote charge carrier separation upon photoexcitation and provide a favorable pathway for exciton transport, and thus is advantageous for photocatalysis. In this work, we report a new D-A COF that was constructed from the electron-rich phenothiazine (PTZ) and electron-deficient triazine (TTA) subunits, giving rise to a segregated bicontinuous D-A heterostructure within the framework. In comparison to the triphenylamine (TPA) based analogue COF with smaller D-A contrast, this newly designed PTZ-TTA-COF exhibited lower exciton binding energy and enhanced charge separation/transfer. As a consequence, it revealed remarkably enhanced photocatalytic ability in oxidative amine coupling and cyclization of thioamide to 1,2,4-thiadiazole reactions under visible light and in air. This study will provide a rational guidance for developing high-performance polymeric photocatalysts based on D-A structural COFs through the molecular-level design strategy.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as one of the most studied photocatalysts owing to their adjustable structure and bandgaps. However, there is limited research on regulating the light-harvesting capabilities of acceptor building blocks in donor-acceptor (D-A) isomer COFs with different bond orientations. This investigation is crucial for elucidating the structure-property-performance relationship of COF photocatalysts. Herein, a series of D-A isostructural COFs are synthesized with different imine bond orientations using benzothiadiazole and its derivatives-based organic building units. Extended light absorption is achieved in COFs with acceptor groups that have strong electron-withdrawing capacities, although this resulted a decreased hydrogen generation efficiency. Photocatalytic experiments indicated that dialdehyde benzothiadiazole-based COFs, HIAM-0015, exhibit the highest hydrogen generation rate (17.99 mmol g-1 h-1), which is 15 times higher than its isomer. The excellent photocatalytic performance of HIAM-0015 can be attributed to its fast charge separation and migration. This work provides insights into the rational design and synthesis of D-A COFs to achieve efficient photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted growing interests as new material platform for a range of applications. In this study, a triazine-carbazole-based covalent organic framework (COF-TCZ) was designed as highly porous material with conjugated donor-acceptor networks, and feasibly synthesized by the Schiff condensation of 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tr ianiline (TAPB) and 9-(4-formylphenyl)-9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarbaldehyde (CZTA) under the solvothermal condition. Considering the effect of linkage, the imine-linked COF-TCZ was further oxidized to obtain an amide-linked covalent organic framework (COF-TCZ-O). The as-synthesized COFs show high crystallinity, good thermal and chemical stability, and excellent photoactive properties. Two π-conjugated triazine-carbazole-based COFs with tunable linkages are beneficial for light-harvesting capacity and charge separation efficiency, which are empolyed as photocatalysts for the oxidation reaction of N-aryltetrahydroisoquinoline. The COFs catalyst systems exhibit the outstanding photocatalytic performance with high conversion, photostability and recyclability. Photoelectrochemical tests were employed to examine the behavior of photogenerated charge carriers in photo-illumination system. The control experiments provide further insights into the nature of photocatalysis. In addition, the current research also provided a valuable approach for developing photofunctional COFs to meet challenge in achieving the great potential of COFs materials in organic conversion.

Abstract:Donor–acceptor covalent organic framework (COF) materials have proven to be an optimal choice for heterogeneous photocatalysis due to their capacity for effective charge separation and harvesting of visible light. The poor chemical and photostability of imine-linked D–A COFs restrict their potential for broader applications. So, researchers are focused on developing imine-linked COFs with enhanced photocatalytic activity. In this study, we also emphasize the pivotal role of molecular engineering to overcome these challenges. Herein, a carbazole-based highly crystalline D–A CzDA-TAPT COF was developed. Not only does the incorporation of the alkyl group-substituted carbazole provide excellent donor ability, but also the butyl groups in the pore skeleton guide the attachment of successive layers in different AB stackings, significantly amplifying the photocatalytic efficiency of the CzDA-TAPT COF by providing more active sites for the reaction. Compared with previously reported photoactive benzothiadiazole-based COFs, this innovative material exhibits superior charge separation and heightened photostability, resulting in a notable advancement in the photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of aryl boronic acids to phenols.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as an important class of organic semiconductors for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). When tuning the photocatalytic activity of COFs, efforts are typically invested on choosing the proper combination of linkers. However, the effect of the linkage on the photocatalytic performance has rarely been studied. Herein, we demonstrate that upon protonation of Schiff-base moieties, donor-acceptor (D-A) type imine-linked COFs can produce hydrogen with a rate as high as 20.7 mmol g -1 h -1 under visible light irradiation. A significant red shift in light absorbance, largely improved charge separation efficiency, as well as an increase in hydrophilicity triggered by protonation of the Schiff-base moieties in the imine-linked COFs, are responsible for the improved photocatalytic performance. The protonation phenomenon, which has not been investigated within the context of imine COFs photocatalytic HER before, arose as a key aspect to improve the photocatalytic performance. On the other hand, it is also instructive to broaden the application of COFs as semiconductors in light harvest and transformation, such as organic solar cells.

Abstract:Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a desirable platform to explore multichoromophoric arrays for photocatalytic conversion. Symmetric arrangement of choromophoric modules over π‐extended frameworks enhances exciton delocalization while impairing excitation density and accordingly photochemical reactivity. Herein, a photoisomerization‐driven strategy is proposed to break the excited‐state symmetry of ketoenamine‐linked COFs with multichoromophoric arrays. Incorporating electron‐withdrawing benzothiadiazole facilitates the ultrafast excited‐state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from enamine to keto within 140 fs, resulting in partially enolized COF isomers. The hybrid linkages containing imine and enamine bonds at the node of framework alter the symmetry of electronic structure and enforce the photoinduced charge separation. Increasing the imine‐to‐enamine ratio further promotes the electron transferred number in a long range, thereby affording the optimum photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate. This work put forward an ESIPT‐induced photoisomerization to build a symmetry‐breaking COF with weakened exciton effect and enhanced photochemical reactivity.

Identifying the roles of imine and alkyne linkages in Determining Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution over Thiadiazole-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Covalent organic framework (COF) has been emerged as an extremely promising material for photocatalytic splitting from water for hydrogen production. However, its photocatalytic performance is seriously affected by the properties of donors, acceptors and their linkages. So far, few studies have been paid on the key roles of linkages of a specific COF in improving its photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Herein, this study designed and synthesized two thiadiazole-based COFs linked by imine and alkyne bonds. The results show that the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of imine-linked COFs (TeTz-COF1) is 19.6 times higher than that of alkyne-linked (TeTz-COF2). Impressively, TeTz-COF1 achieves an AQE of 3.5% at 475 nm, and due to the presence of imine bonds. The experimental results confirm that TeTz-COF1 with imine linkages shows higher photocurrent density, lower photocurrent resistance, and longer fluorescence lifetime than TeTz-COF2 with alkyne linkages. Meanwhile, the well-defined density function theory (DFT) calculations further suggest that both the imine bond and the acetylene bonds belong to the HOMO orbitals. Particularly, the imine bonds endow TeTz-COF1 with more delocalized orbital occupation and smaller work functions, thus leading to its lower excited state energy, stronger carrier separation ability and faster electron migration capability. Both theoretic analysis and experimental results prove that the presence of imine bonds in TeTz- COF1 can enable efficient separation and fast transport of photogenerated carriers. This work may provide important guiding significance for the development of new COFs in the direction of photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently gained recognition as highly effective photocatalysts for solar energy conversion, in which manipulating the electronic structures of photocatalysts is crucial for optimizing their photocatalytic performances. In this study, four benzothiadiazole and its derivatives-based COFs (HIAM-0007 to HIAM-0010) were rationally designed and synthesized, which show remarkable differences toward photocatalytic oxidative amine coupling and hydrogen peroxide generation. Benzothiadiazole-based COF exhibits efficient oxidative amine coupling with a yield up to 99%, while naphthothiadiazole-based COF shows the highest rate of 796 umol g-1 h-1 for photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide generation from air and water without additional reagents. This work underscores the variability in the activity of individual COF across different photocatalytic reaction systems, demonstrating the best performance is the combination of electronic structures of COFs and the surrounding reaction environment.

Abstract:The rational design of organic semiconductors based on crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as efficient photocatalysts is highly desirable. In this study, the first example of phenanthroimidazole-based COFs is reported: PIm-COF1 with an imine linkage and PIm-COF2 with a β-ketoenamine-linkage. Both COF materials showed substantial optical properties. The average hydrogen evolution rate was 7417.5 μmolg–1 h–1 for PIm-COF2, which was 14 times higher than that of PIm-COF1 (528.5 μmolg–1 h–1). This can be attributed to the strong donor–acceptor effect of PIm-COF2 and the continuous separation and transfer of the photoexcited electron–hole pair from the phenanthro[9,10-d] imidazole moiety which are verified by time-dependent density functional theory and excitation state analysis.

Abstract:Although the variety of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is expanding, it is still limited and challenging to construct COFs through the formation of two types of covalent linkages. In this study, we present a one-step method for the preparation of a highly crystalline COF with olefin and imine dual linkages, which is achieved by organobase-catalyzed orthogonal Schiff base reaction and Knoevenagel condensation. Intriguingly, this method can also be utilized for the synthesis of an imine-linked COF. The resulting TFPT-APA COF with dual linkages possesses a high specific surface area of 1329 m 2 g −1 and exhibits enhanced performance in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants over the structurally similar imine-linked TFPT-PA COF. Further studies reveal that TFPT-APA can generate singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) under light irradiation, whereas TFPT-PA does not possess this capability. This study not only provides a new approach for the design and synthesis of COFs with dual linkages, but also opens up possibilities for constructing COFs with diverse catalytic properties.

Abstract:Linkage conversion of imine to amide can not only boost the stability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) but also enhance their functionality. However, current methods for generating amide linkages usually involve the use of inorganic oxidants, such as NaClO2 and oxone, which have a severe drawback of functional group incompatibility. In this study, we introduced a novel synthetic strategy to fabricate amide-linked COFs (Am-COFs) through N-heterocyclic carbene-mediated aerobic oxidation of CN bonds in the corresponding imine-linked COFs. This protocol not only featured mild reaction conditions, high crystallinity retention, quantitative conversion efficiency, and generality but, most importantly, delivered great compatibility with functional groups due to the umpolung of imine. Accordingly, we successfully synthesized Am-COFD19 and Am-COFR3, which contained oxidant-susceptible dibenzothiophene and vinyl groups, respectively. Am-COFD19 exhibited excellent photocatalytic dehalogenation activity of α-bromoacetophenone, while Am-COFR3 underwent intramolecular hydroamidation to yield dihydroisoquinolinone-linked 2HQ-COFR3 that has never been reported before. The discovery of this strategy is expected to expedite the application of amide-linked COFs.

Abstract:This study reports on a metal-free Covalent Triazine Framework (CTF) incorporating bithiophene structural units (TP-CTF) with a semicrystalline structure as an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The physico-chemical properties and composition of this material was confirmed via different characterization solid-state techniques, such as XRD, TGA, CO2 adsorption and FT-IR, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The compound was synthesized through a solvothermal process and was explored as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for the oxidative coupling of amines to imines under visible light irradiation. TP-CTF demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic activity, with high conversion rates and selectivity. Importantly, the material exhibited exceptional stability and recyclability, making it a strong candidate for sustainable and efficient imine synthesis. The low bandgap of TP-CTF enabled the efficient absorption of visible light, which is a notable advantage for visible-light-driven photocatalysis.

Abstract:To date, two‐dimensional β‐ketoenamine‐linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have exhibited tremendous potential in visible light photocatalysis due to their broad absorption and favorable stability provided by the linkage. Here, with 1,3,5‐triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) as the stationary building block, various COFs can be constructed to address different challenges. To inspire state‐of‐the‐art advancements toward photocatalysis, in the Concept article, the rational design of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs is summarized. First, the dimension of engineering the linker is considered to improve the activity of the COFs. The photocatalysis could be extended by just the linker length or by the inserted functionalities in the other building block. Second, the other dimension of integrating cocatalysts like transition metals or 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) with β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs could further expand the potential in photocatalytic reactions. These prior accomplishments establish that the rational design of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs is instrumental in improving the photocatalytic activity, laying the foundation for future explorations.

Abstract:As we know, the photoelectric properties of the covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be properly adjusted by introducing an electron donor–acceptor (D–A) structure. In here, a two-dimensional D–A type Py-BPDAIP-COF with an excellent photoelectric characteristic was prepared in a post-modified method. Significantly, the introducing of very strong electron-withdrawing pyridinium structure dramatically improve inductive and conjugative effects of the electron acceptor unit of Py-BPDAIP-COF. And the electron-rich pyrene skeleton on the knot of the COF was as an electron donor. Then a strong electron push–pull effect between the donor and acceptor units can be transmitted to the COFs backbone, significantly improving the transfer and separation of light-generated electrons. The Py-BPDAIP-COF showed very excellent photocatalytic activity in visible light-induce aerobic hydroxylation, thiocyanation transformation and oxidative C-H functionalization. Therefore, we design and construct a highly efficient olefin-linked D–A type COF photocatalysts via tuning inductive and conjugative effects of pore wall surface.

Abstract:2D (two-dimensional) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are receiving ongoing attention in semiconductor photocatalysis. Herein, we present a photocatalytic selective chemical transformation by combining sp 2 carbon-conjugated porphyrin-based covalent organic framework ( Por-sp 2 c-COF ) photocatalysis with TEMPO catalysis illuminated by 623 nm red light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Highly selective conversion of amines into imines were swiftly afforded in minutes. Specifically, the π-conjugation of porphyrin linker leads to extensive absorption of red light; the sp 2 -C=C- double bonds linkage ensures the stability of Por-sp 2 c-COF under high concentration of amine. More importantly, we found that crystalline framework of Por-sp 2 c-COF is pivotal for cooperative photocatalysis with TEMPO. This work foreshadows that the outstanding hallmarks of COFs, particularly crystallinity, could be exploited to address energy and environmental challenges by cooperative photocatalysis.

Linker Modulation of Covalent Organic Frameworks at Atomic Level for Enhanced and Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Thioether

Abstract:COFs with atomic‐level N sites‐based linkers are prepared and used for the photocatalytic oxidation of thioether. Due to the high O2 adsorption energy and enhanced 1O2 activation properties, TpBpy‐COF exhibits superior catalytic activity for thioether oxidation because of its narrow bandgap, fast charge separation and transfer ability and single‐ended activation ability. Atomic‐level modulation of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) structure for enhanced photocatalytic oxidation is highly important but still challenging. Herein, a series of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs have been synthesized by using 2,4,6‐triformyl‐phloroglucinol (Tp) as a modular molecule, 5,5′‐Diamino‐2,2′‐bipyridine (Bpy), and 3,6‐Pyridazinediamine (Dz) linkers with atomic level N sites substitute 4,4′‐diamino‐bipheny (BD) and 1,4‐phenylenediamine (Pa) to construct COFs with adjustable photocatalytic performance. Mechanism study reveals that in COFs with N sites‐based linkers, 1O2 adsorbed on the pore walls of TpBpy‐COF (−4.23 kcal mol−1) and TpDz‐COF (−4.63 kcal mol−1) with higher adsorption energy than on TpBD‐COF (−2.73 kcal mol−1) and TpPa‐COF (−2.17 kcal mol−1), enabling 1O2 activation and high catalytic performance toward thioether oxidation with almost >99% conversion, outperforming most reported organic photocatalysts. Notably, TpBpy‐COF exhibits a superior catalytic activity for thioether oxidation (e.g., aromatic thioethers, aliphatic sulfide, and Mustard Gas sulfide) because of its narrow bandgap, fast charge separation and transfer ability, and single‐ended activation ability. This study provides a novel and effective strategy for modulating exciton effects and photocatalytic activity of COFs‐based organic photocatalysts at the atomic level.

Design and synthesis of broadband absorption covalent organic framework for efficient artificial photocatalytic amine coupling

Abstract:Developing highly active materials that efficiently utilize solar spectra is crucial for photocatalysis, but still remains a challenge. Here, we report a new donor-acceptor (D-A) covalent organic framework (COF) with a wide absorption range from 200 nm to 900 nm (ultraviolet-visible-near infrared light). We find that the thiophene functional group is accurately introduced into the electron acceptor units of TpDPP-Py (TpDPP: 5,5'-(2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)−3,6-dioxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydropyrrolo [3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-diyl)bis(thiophene-2-carbaldehyde), Py: 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)pyrene) COFs not only significantly extends its spectral absorption capacity but also endows them with two-photon and three-photon absorption effects, greatly enhancing the utilization rate of sunlight. The selective coupling of benzylamine as the target reactant is used to assess the photocatalytic activity of TpDPP-Py COFs, showing high photocatalytic conversion of 99% and selectivity of 98% in 20 min. Additionally, the TpDPP-Py COFs also exhibit the universality of photocatalytic selective coupling of other imine derivatives with ~100% conversion efficiency. Overall, this work brings a significant strategy for developing COFs with a wide absorption range to enhance photocatalytic activity.

Programming Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Promoted Photoinduced Molecular Oxygen Activation

Abstract:Despite the pivotal role of molecular oxygen (O2) activation in artificial photosynthesis, the activation efficiency is often restricted by sluggish exciton dissociation and charge transfer kinetics within polymer photocatalysts. Herein, we propose two tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with tailored donor-acceptor (D-A) structures, TTF-PDI-COF and TTF-TFPP-COF, to promote O2 activation. Because of enhanced electron push-pull interactions that facilitated charge separation and transfer behavior, TTF-PDI-COF exhibited superior photocatalytic activity in electron-induced O2 activation reactions over TTF-TFPP-COF under visible light irradiation, including the photosynthesis of (E)-3-amino-2-thiocyano-α,β-unsaturated compounds and H2O2. These findings highlight the significant potential of the rational design of COFs with D-A configurations as suitable candidates for advanced photocatalytic applications.
