Abstract:Subwavelength plasmonic dipole cavities serve as highly promising platforms for next-generation terahertz (THz) sensors, offering size selectivity and position-dependent sensing characteristics. Hence, in this work, we have explored dipole cavities (both symmetric and asymmetric) as a sensing platform for a thin film analyte while operating in the deep subwavelength spatial dimensions. Notably, our study demonstrates improved sensitivity with the asymmetric configurations of dipole cavities. Further, our investigations reveal maximum sensitivity corresponding to the cavity dimension of ∼ λ/40, where λ is the operating wavelength. While existing studies suggest that the decreasing dipole cavity width (increasing aspect ratio) enhances the field confinement (hence, sensitivity), our findings reveal a critical threshold dimension (5:1 as aspect ratio or λ/40 as lateral dimension for our studied system) beyond which sensitivity reduces despite reducing the cavity dimension. Further, our experimental observations are well supported through extensive numerical simulations that reinforce the credibility of derived results. Therefore, this work demonstrates asymmetric deep-subwavelength dipole cavities for optimized thin film sensing that can be useful in realizing the optimum design of deep-subwavelength THz cavities for actualizing ultrasensitive devices.
