Viewed as endomorphisms of this algebra, we associate adjoint operators to tensors. We show that the group actions on the tensor space and on the adjoint operators are consistent, which means that the invariants of the adjoint operator of a tensor, such as the Jordan decomposition, are invariants of the tensor. We show that there is an essentially unique algebra structure that preserves the tensor structure and has a meaningful Jordan decomposition. We utilize aspects of these adjoint operators to study orbit separation and classification in examples relevant to tensor decomposition and quantum information.

Abstract:We consider subalgebras $\mathcal{A}$ of the algebra $M_n$ of $n \times n$ complex matrices that contain all diagonal matrices, known in the literature as the structural matrix algebras (SMAs). Let $\mathcal{A} \subseteq M_n$ be an arbitrary SMA. We first show that any commuting family of diagonalizable matrices $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \mathcal{A}$ can be intrinsically simultaneously diagonalized, i.e. there exists an invertible matrix $S \in \mathcal{A}$ such that all matrices $S^{-1}AS$ ($A \in \mathcal{F}$) are diagonal. We then characterize when one SMA Jordan-embeds into another and in that case we describe the form of such Jordan embeddings. As a consequence, we obtain a description of Jordan automorphisms of SMAs, generalizing Coelho's result on their algebra automorphisms. Next, motivated by the results of Marcus-Moyls and Molnar-Šemrl connecting linear rank-one preservers with Jordan embeddings $M_n \to M_n$ and $\mathcal{T}_n \to M_n$ (where $\mathcal{T}_n$ is the algebra of $n \times n$ upper-triangular matrices) respectively, we show that any linear unital rank-one preserver $\mathcal{A} \to M_n$ is necessarily a Jordan embedding. As the converse fails in general, we also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for when it does hold true. Finally, we obtain a complete description of linear rank preservers $\mathcal{A} \to M_n$, as maps of the form $$ X \mapsto S\left(PX + (I-P)X^t\right)T,$$ for some invertible matrices $S,T \in M_n$ and a central idempotent $P\in\mathcal{A}$.

Abstract:One of the main issues in computing a tensor decomposition is how to choose the number of rank-one components, since there is no finite algorithms for determining the rank of a tensor. A commonly used approach for this purpose is to find a low-dimensional subspace by solving an optimization problem and assuming the number of components is fixed. However, even though this algorithm is efficient and easy to implement, it often converges to poor local minima and suffers from outliers and noise. The aim of this paper is to develop a mathematical framework for exact tensor decomposition that is able to represent a tensor as the sum of a finite number of low-rank tensors. In the paper three different problems will be carried out to derive: i) the decomposition of a non-negative self-adjoint tensor operator; ii) the decomposition of a linear tensor transformation; iii) the decomposition of a generic tensor.

A Jordan-Chevalley decomposition beyond algebraic groups

Abstract:We prove a decomposition of definable groups in o-minimal structures generalizing the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition of linear algebraic groups. It follows that any definable linear group G is a semidirect product of its maximal normal definable torsion-free subgroup N(G) and a definable subgroup P, unique up to conjugacy, definably isomorphic to a semialgebraic group. Along the way, we establish two other fundamental decompositions of classical groups in arbitrary o-minimal structures: 1) a Levi decomposition and 2) a key decomposition of disconnected groups, relying on a generalization of Frattini's argument to the o-minimal setting. In o-minimal structures, together with p-groups, 0-groups play a crucial role. We give a characterization of both classes and show that definable p-groups are solvable, like finite p-groups, but they are not necessarily nilpotent. Furthermore, we prove that definable p-groups (p=0 or p prime) are definably generated by torsion elements and, in definably connected groups, 0-Sylow subgroups coincide with p-Sylow subgroups for each p prime.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate quadratic forms defined on a vector space in odd characteristic; given a subspace $\pi$, we determine the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $\pi$ and span a non-singular subspace with $\pi$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $\pi$ is non-singular were first studied in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)', which was later improved for even-dimensional subspaces in `Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)' and generalised in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)'. The explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds were derived in the symplectic and Hermitian case in `De Boeck and Van de Voorde (Linear Algebra Appl. 2024)'. This paper deals with the more complicated quadratic case.

Abstract:For an affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak g}$ the coefficients of certain vertex operators which annihilate level $k$ standard $\hat{\mathfrak g}$-modules are the defining relations for level $k$ standard modules. In the paper \cite{PS3} combinatorial structure of the leading terms of mentioned relations for level $k=2$ standard $\hat{\mathfrak g}$-modules and affine Lie algebras of type $C_{n}\sp{(1)}$ is given. The main result of this paper is a construction of combinatorially parameterized relations among relations of $C_{2}\sp{(1)}$-standard modules for all levels.

Abstract:Every $n$-tuple in $\mathbb{F}^{n}$ has a first non-zero entry and a last non-zero entry. What do the positions of such entries in the elements of a subspace W of $\mathbb{F}^{n}$ reveal about W? It turns out, a great deal! This insight offers a beeline to the fundamental results on general bases and dimension (including dimensions of complements, rank of a transpose, Rank-Nullity Theorem, Full Rank Factorization, and existence/uniqueness of RREF), bypassing some of the traditional stumbling blocks and time sinks.

Abstract:We propose a new linear algebraic approach to the computation of Tarskian semantics in logic. We embed a finite model M in first-order logic with N entities in N-dimensional Euclidean space R^N by mapping entities of M to N dimensional one-hot vectors and k-ary relations to order-k adjacency tensors (multi-way arrays). Second given a logical formula F in prenex normal form, we compile F into a set Sigma_F of algebraic formulas in multi-linear algebra with a nonlinear operation. In this compilation, existential quantifiers are compiled into a specific type of tensors, e.g., identity matrices in the case of quantifying two occurrences of a variable. It is shown that a systematic evaluation of Sigma_F in R^N gives the truth value, 1(true) or 0(false), of F in M. Based on this framework, we also propose an unprecedented way of computing the least models defined by Datalog programs in linear spaces via matrix equations and empirically show its effectiveness compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

Linear algebra over T-pairs

Abstract:This paper treats linear algebra over a semiring pair, in a wide range of applications to tropical algebra and related areas such as hyperrings and fuzzy rings. First we present a more general category of ``pairs'' with their morphisms, called ``weak morphisms,'' paying special attention to supertropical pairs, hyperpairs, and the doubling functor. Then we turn to matrices and the question of whether the row rank, column rank, and submatrix rank of a matrix are equal. Often the submatrix rank is less than or equal to the row rank and the column rank, but there is a counterexample to equality, discovered some time ago by the second author, which we provide in a more general setting (``pairs of the second kind'') that includes the hyperfield of signs. Additional positive results include a version of Cramer's rule, and we find situations when equality holds, encompassing results by Akian, Gaubert, Guterman, Izhakian, Knebusch, and Rowen. We pay special attention to the question of whether $n+1$ vectors of length $n$ need be dependent. At the end, we introduce a category with stronger morphisms, that preserve a surpassing relation.

Variable Independence in Linear Real Arithmetic

Abstract:Variable independence and decomposability are algorithmic techniques for simplifying logical formulas by tearing apart connections between free variables. These techniques were originally proposed to speed up query evaluation in constraint databases, in particular by representing the query as a Boolean combination of formulas with no interconnected variables. They also have many other applications in SMT, string analysis, databases, automata theory and other areas. However, the precise complexity of variable independence and decomposability has been left open especially for the quantifier-free theory of linear real arithmetic (LRA), which is central in database applications. We introduce a novel characterization of formulas admitting decompositions and use it to show that it is coNP-complete to decide variable decomposability over LRA. As a corollary, we obtain that deciding variable independence is in $ \Sigma_2^p $. These results substantially improve the best known double-exponential time algorithms for variable decomposability and independence. In many practical applications, it is crucial to be able to efficiently eliminate connections between variables whenever possible. We design and implement an algorithm for this problem, which is optimal in theory, exponentially faster compared to the current state-of-the-art algorithm and efficient on various microbenchmarks. In particular, our algorithm is the first one to overcome a fundamental barrier between non-discrete and discrete first-order theories. Formulas arising in practice often have few or even no free variables that are perfectly independent. In this case, our algorithm can compute a best-possible approximation of a decomposition, which can be used to optimize database queries by exploiting partial variable independence, which is present in almost every logical formula or database query constraint.

Realization of Jordan-Kronecker invariants by Lie algebras

Abstract:We study what Jordan-Kronecker invariants of Lie algebras, introduced by A. V. Bolsinov and P. Zhang, are possible. We completely solve this problem in the Jordan and the Kronecker cases. We prove that any JK invariants that contain the Kronecker $3 \times 3$ block or several Kronecker $1 \times 1$ blocks are possible. For other JK invariants, with Kronecker indices $k_1, \dots, k_q$, we give a partial answer: all Jordan--Kronecker invariants with no more than $\sum_i k_i$ Jordan tuples with multiple maxima are possible; the Jordan--Kronecker invariants with more than $\sum_i k_i$ unique Jordan tuples with multiple maxima are impossible. We also desribe all JK invariants that can be realized by compatible Poisson brackets with non-constant eigenvalues

Abstract:Invariance transformations of polyadic decompositions of matrix multiplication tensors define an equivalence relation on the set of such decompositions. In this paper, we present an algorithm to efficiently decide whether two polyadic decompositions of a given matrix multiplication tensor are equivalent. With this algorithm, we analyze the equivalence classes of decompositions of several matrix multiplication tensors. This analysis is relevant for the study of fast matrix multiplication as it relates to the question of how many essentially different fast matrix multiplication algorithms there exist. This question has been first studied by de~Groote, who showed that for the multiplication of $2\times2$ matrices with $7$ active multiplications, all algorithms are essentially equivalent to Strassen's algorithm. In contrast, the results of our analysis show that for the multiplication of larger matrices, (e.g., $2\times3$ by $3\times2$ or $3\times3$ by $3\times3$ matrices), two decompositions are very likely to be essentially different. We further provide a necessary criterion for a polyadic decomposition to be equivalent to a polyadic decomposition with integer entries. Decompositions with specific integer entries, e.g., powers of two, provide fast matrix multiplication algorithms with better efficiency and stability properties. This condition can be tested algorithmically and we present the conclusions obtained for the decompositions of small/medium matrix multiplication tensors.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a polynomial decomposition model that arises in problems of system identification, signal processing and machine learning. We show that this decomposition is a special case of the X-rank decomposition --- a powerful novel concept in algebraic geometry that generalizes the tensor CP decomposition. We prove new results on generic/maximal rank and on identifiability of a particular polynomial decomposition model. In the paper, we try to make results and basic tools accessible for general audience (assuming no knowledge of algebraic geometry or its prerequisites).

Abstract:Starting from our previous papers Angelini et al. (2018c) and Angelini et al. (2018a), we prove the existence of a non-empty Euclidean open subset whose elements are polynomial vectors with 4 components, in 3 variables, degrees, respectively, 2 , 3 , 3 , 3 and rank 6, which are not identifiable over C but are identifiable over R . This result has been obtained via computer-aided procedures suitably adapted to investigate the number of Waring decompositions for general polynomial vectors over the fields of complex and real numbers. Furthermore, by means of the Hessian criterion (Chiantini et al., 2014), we prove identifiability over C for polynomial vectors in many cases of sub-generic rank.

Linear Algebra and its Applications

Abstract:We provide simple criteria and algorithms for expressing homogeneous polynomials as sums of powers of independent linear forms, or equivalently, for decomposing symmetric tensors into sums of rank-1 symmetric tensors of linearly independent vectors. The criteria rely on two facets of higher degree forms, namely Harrison's algebraic theory and some algebro-geometric properties. The proposed algorithms are based purely on solving linear and quadratic equations. Moreover, as a byproduct of our criteria and algorithms one can easily decide whether or not a homogeneous polynomial or symmetric tensor is orthogonally or unitarily decomposable.
