Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:The relation between the spectra of operator pencils with unbounded coefficients and of associated linear relations is investigated. It turns out that various types of spectrum coincide and the same is true for the Weyr characteristics. This characteristic describes how many independent Jordan chains up to a certain length exist. Furthermore, the change of this characteristic subject to one-dimensional perturbations is investigated.

Abstract:We show that a compact representation of a semisimple Lie group has an orthogonal decomposition into finite length representations. This generalises and simplifies a number of more special spectral theorems in the literature. We apply it to the case of cusp forms, thus settling the spectral theory for the space of non-unitary twisted cusp forms.

Abstract:In his classical paper, Laurent Schwartz proved that on the real line, in every linear translation invariant space of continuous complex valued functions, which is closed under compact convergence the exponential monomials span a dense subspace. He studied so-called local ideals in the space of Fourier transforms, and his proof based on the observation that, on the one hand, these local ideals are completely determined by the exponential monomials in the space, and, on the other hand, these local ideals completely determine the space itself. On the other hand, Dimitri Gurevich gave counterexamples for Schwartz's theorem in higher dimension. In this paper we show that the ideas of localisation can be extended to general locally compact Abelian groups using abstract derivations on the Fourier algebra of compactly supported measures. Based on this method we present necessary and sufficient conditions for spectral synthesis for varieties on locally compact Abelian groups. Using localisation, in \cite{MR4789359} we proved that spectral synthesis holds on a locally compact Abelian group $G$ if and only if it holds on $G/B$, where $B$ is the closed subgroup of compact elements. This may lead to a complete characterisation of locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis.

Abstract:Let Ω ⊂ R be a compact measurable set of measure 1 and with null boundary measure. We show that if Ω is a spectral set, then it admits a rational spectrum. The proof relies on the periodicity of spectrums shown in [16], and adopts the technique in [28] for analyzing zeros of exponential sums as well as the technique in [16] that relates the spectrum to the tiling of | 1 ˆ Ω | 2 . The key technical ingredient we contribute that eventually leads to the result is the periodicity of values from an exponential sum on a certain subgroup of Z , which characterizes the torsion part of the spectrum. An immediate consequence of this result, together with periodicity and rationality results in [16,28], is the equivalence between the Fuglede conjecture in R and in Z n .

Abstract:This paper is devoted to study the interrelations between inessential, improjective, strictly singular and strictly cosingular linear relations. First, we show that the classes of strictly singular and strictly cosingular linear relations with finite dimensional multivalued part are contained in the class of inessential linear relations and that for many Banach spaces these inclusions are equalities. Moreover, we prove that the class of improjective linear relations contains the class of inessential linear relations and we also see that for the most classical Banach spaces the improjective linear relations with finite dimensional multivalued part coincide with the inessential linear relations with finite dimensional multivalued part. Finally, to give value to our results we construct an example of a closed everywhere defined linear relation with finite dimensional multivalued part of each of the following types: inessential not strictly singular. inessential not strictly cosingular. improjective not inessential.

Abstract:We study the real spectrum compactification of character varieties of finitely generated groups in semisimple Lie groups. This provides a compactification with good topological properties, and we interpret the boundary points in terms of actions on building-like spaces. Among the applications we give a general framework guaranteeing the existence of equivariant harmonic maps in building-like spaces.

Abstract:For a locally linear graph $G$, which is a graph built out of triangles, it is possible to construct another graph $G^*$ that would consist of triangles of $G$ as vertices, while sharing (or not sharing) a common vertex between a pair of triangles would define a binary relation for edges of $G^*$. In this paper we show that the spectrum of $G^*$ is uniquely defined by $G$. We will also show some structural similarities of these graphs; in particular, that the number of quadrilaterals and pentagons in both graphs are the same; that $G^*$ does not contain $K_4-e$ and $K_{1,4}$; and that $G$ can be reconstructed from $G^*$.

The main results are: Let A be compact. 1. Abstract:The result of J. R. Kline and R. L. Moore (1919) says that a compact subset of the plane homeomorphic to a subset of the reals lies on the arc. Motivated by this result, we give a purely topological characterisation of compact sets of the reals. This allows us to reduce investigations of Cantorvals to properties of countable linear orders and to show, applying the Mazurkiewicz–Sierpiński Theorem (1920), that there exist continuum many non-homeomorphic L -Cantorvals.

Abstract:The famous Ascoli-Arzelà theorem served as a springboard for research into compactness in function spaces, particularly spaces of continuous functions. This paper investigates compact subsets of spaces of continuous functions endowed with topologies between the topology of pointwise convergence and the topology of uniform convergence. More precisely, this paper studies necessary and sufficient conditions for a subset to be compact in C λ , u ( X ) for a locally- λ space X when λ ⊇ F( X ), for a hemi- λ λ f -space X when λ ⊆ P S( X ), and for a k -space X when λ ⊇ K( X ). This paper also studies that every bounded subset of C λ , u ( X ) has compact closure for some classes of topological spaces X .

Abstract:The Kadison-Singer Conjecture, as proved by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava (MSS) [Ann. Math. 182, 327-350 (2015)], has been informally thought of as a strengthening of Batson, Spielman, and Srivastava's theorem that every undirected graph has a linear-sized spectral sparsifier [SICOMP 41, 1704-1721 (2012)]. We formalize this intuition by using a corollary of the MSS result to derive the existence of spectral sparsifiers with a number of edges linear in their number of vertices for all undirected, weighted graphs. The proof consists of two steps. First, following a suggestion of Srivastava [Asia Pac. Math. Newsl. 3, 15-20 (2013)], we show the result in the special case of graphs with bounded leverage scores by repeatedly applying the MSS corollary to partition the graph, while maintaining an appropriate bound on the leverage scores of each subgraph. Then, we extend to the general case by constructing a recursive algorithm that repeatedly (i) divides edges with high leverage scores into multiple parallel edges and (ii) uses the bounded leverage score case to sparsify the resulting graph.

Abstract:The spectral theory of operator matrices has several applications in elasticity, quantum mechanics, fluid dynamics, and other fields of mathematical physics. The study of operator matrices is more challenging when the involved operators are not single-valued and should be studied in the context of the theory of relations. In this paper, we utilize the connection between linear relations and their induced operators and use space decomposition methods to characterize the distribution of the spectrum for upper triangular relation matrices. We undertake the same for the essential spectrum, Weyl spectrum, and Browder spectrum. Under certain conditions, we obtain a Browder-type theorem and a Weyl-type theorem for such relation matrices.

Abstract:We introduce and study the notion of reduced spectral synthesis, which unifies the concepts of spectral synthesis and uniqueness in locally compact groups. We exhibit a number of examples and prove that every non-discrete locally compact group with an open abelian subgroup has a subset that fails reduced spectral synthesis. We introduce compact operator synthesis as an operator algebraic counterpart of this notion and link it to other exceptional sets in operator algebra theory, studied previously. We show that a closed subset E of a second countable locally compact group G satisfies reduced local spectral synthesis if and only if the subset <math>E⁎={(s,t):ts−1∈E}</math> of <math>G×G</math> satisfies compact operator synthesis. We apply our results to questions about the equivalence of linear operator equations with normal commuting coefficients on Schatten p-classes.
