Abstract:The Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP) is a global community dedicated to advancing earthquake predictability research by rigorously testing probabilistic earthquake forecast models and prediction algorithms. At the heart of this mission is the recent introduction of pyCSEP, an open‐source software tool designed to evaluate earthquake forecasts. pyCSEP integrates modules to access earthquake catalogs, visualize forecast models, and perform statistical tests. Contributions from the CSEP community have reinforced the role of pyCSEP in offering a comprehensive suite of tools to test earthquake forecast models. This article builds on Savran, Bayona, et al. (2022), in which pyCSEP was originally introduced, by describing new tests and recent updates that have significantly enhanced the functionality and user experience of pyCSEP. It showcases the integration of new features, including access to authoritative earthquake catalogs from Italy (Bolletino Seismico Italiano), New Zealand (GeoNet), and the world (Global Centroid Moment Tensor), the creation of multiresolution spatial forecast grids, the adoption of non‐Poissonian testing methods, applying a global seismicity model to specific regions for benchmarking regional models and evaluating alarm‐based models. We highlight the application of these recent advances in regional studies, specifically through the New Zealand case study, which showcases the ability of pyCSEP to evaluate detailed, region‐specific seismic forecasts using statistical functions. The enhancements in pyCSEP also facilitate the standardization of how the CSEP forecast experiments are conducted, improving the reliability, and comparability of the earthquake forecasting models. As such, pyCSEP exemplifies collaborative research and innovation in earthquake predictability, supporting transparent scientific practices, and community‐driven development approaches.

Magnitude Uncertainties Impact Seismic Rate Estimates, Forecasts and Predictability Experiments

Abstract:The Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP) aims to prospectively test time-dependent earthquake probability forecasts on their consistency with observations. To compete, time-dependent seismicity models are calibrated on earthquake catalog data. But catalogs contain much observational uncertainty. We study the impact of magnitude uncertainties on rate estimates in clustering models, on their forecasts and on their evaluation by CSEP's consistency tests. First, we quantify magnitude uncertainties. We find that magnitude uncertainty is more heavy-tailed than a Gaussian, such as a double-sided exponential distribution, with scale parameter nu_c=0.1 - 0.3. Second, we study the impact of such noise on the forecasts of a simple clustering model which captures the main ingredients of popular short term models. We prove that the deviations of noisy forecasts from an exact forecast are power law distributed in the tail with exponent alpha=1/(a*nu_c), where a is the exponent of the productivity law of aftershocks. We further prove that the typical scale of the fluctuations remains sensitively dependent on the specific catalog. Third, we study how noisy forecasts are evaluated in CSEP consistency tests. Noisy forecasts are rejected more frequently than expected for a given confidence limit. The Poisson assumption of the consistency tests is inadequate for short-term forecast evaluations. To capture the idiosyncrasies of each model together with any propagating uncertainties, the forecasts need to specify the entire likelihood distribution of seismic rates.

Some Thoughts on the Earthquake Science Experimental Site ─ The Underground Cloud Map 1

Abstract:The Western Yunnan Earthquake Predication Test Site set up jointly by the China Earthquake Administration, the National Science Foundation Commission of America, and United States Geological Survey has played an important role in development of early earthquake research work in China. Due to various objective reasons, most of the predicted targets in the earthquake prediction test site have not been achieved, and the development has been hindered. In recent years, the experiment site has been reconsidered, and renamed the “Earthquake Science Experimental Site” . Combined with the current development of seismology and the practical needs of disaster prevention and mitigation, we propose adding the “Underground Cloud Map” as the new direction of the experimental site. Using highly repeatable, environmentally friendly and safe airgun sources, we could send constant seismic signals, which realizes continuous monitoring of subsurface velocity changes. Utilizing the high-resolution 3-D crustal structure from ambient noise tomography, we could obtain 4-D ( 3-D space + 1-D time) images of subsurface structures, which we termed the “ Underground Cloud Map ” . The “Underground Cloud Map ” can reflect underground velocity and stress changes, providing new means for the earthquake monitoring forecast nationwide, which promotes the conversion of experience-based earthquake prediction to physics-based prediction.

Abstract:The importance of developing high-resolution seismic models to improve understanding of tectonic processes and enhance seismic hazard mitigation programs, along with the rapid expansion of seismic coverage in China, called for a seismological reference model to be established in China. The China Seismological Reference Model (CSRM) project was initiated by the National Natural Science Foundation of China with two primary goals: (1) the CSRM would serve as a primary source for the current state of seismological research in China, and (2) the seismic data and constraints used to construct the CSRM would be used as a backbone open-access cyberinfrastructure for future research in seismology. The CSRM project was also intended to promote data exchange and scientific collaboration in seismology in China. Accordingly, two parallel efforts of the project are being pursued: (1) construction of the CSRM, and (2) development of a CSRM product center. The CSRM is jointly constrained by various types of seismic constraints extracted from the seismic data recorded at 4511 seismic stations in continental China following a top-down approach, with the seismic structures in the shallower part of the Earth constrained first. Construction of the CSRM involves three preparation steps: (1) building datasets of various seismic constraints from the seismic data, (2) developing a method to incorporate the constraints of surface wave observations from regional earthquakes into the inversion of the seismic structure, and (3) constructing high-resolution pre-CSRM seismic models of the velocity structure in the shallow crust and the Pn-velocity structure in the uppermost mantle. In the final process, the CSRM will be constructed by jointly inverting all the seismic constraints using the pre-CSRM models as starting models or a priori structures. The CSRM product center (http://chinageorefmodel.org) archives and distributes three types of products: CSRM models, the Level 1 original seismic data used to extract seismic constraints in the construction of the CSRM, and Level 2 data on the seismic constraints derived from the Level 1 data and the inferred earthquake parameters in the construction of the CSRM. The CSRM product center has archived 141 TB of Level 1 data from 1120 permanent broadband stations in the China Seismic Network Center and 3391 temporary stations from various institutions and data centers around the world, as well as 140 GB of Level 2 data on various seismic constraints and inferred event parameters from the construction of the CSRM. The CSRM is expected to provide significant insights into the composition and tectonic dynamics in continental China and to enhance the capability of various seismic hazard mitigation programs in China from near real-time rapid determination of earthquake parameters to an earthquake early warning system. The CSRM could also provide guidance for focuses in future seismological research and the design of future active and passive seismic experiments in China. Several focuses are suggested for future seismological research in China, along with the building of a national cyberinfrastructure to sustain and expand the operations of the CSRM project.
High Resolution Long- and Short-Term Earthquake Forecasts for California

Abstract:We present two models for estimating the probabilities of future earthquakes in California, to be tested in the Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP). The first, time-independent model, modified from Helmstetter et al. (2007), provides five-year forecasts for magnitudes m > 4.95. We show that large quakes occur on average near the locations of small m > 2 events, so that a high-resolution estimate of the spatial distribution of future large quakes is obtained from the locations of the numerous small events. We employ an adaptive spatial kernel of optimized bandwidth and assume a universal, tapered Gutenberg-Richter distribution. In retrospective tests, we show that no Poisson forecast could capture the observed variability. We therefore also test forecasts using a negative binomial distribution for the number of events. We modify existing likelihood-based tests to better evaluate the spatial forecast. Our time-dependent model, an Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model modified from Helmstetter et al. (2006), provides next-day forecasts for m > 3.95. The forecasted rate is the sum of a background rate, proportional to our time-independent model, and of the triggered events due to all prior earthquakes. Each earthquake triggers events with a rate that increases exponentially with its magnitude and decays in time according to Omori's law. An isotropic kernel models the spatial density of aftershocks for small (< 5.5) events. For larger quakes, we smooth early aftershocks to forecast later events. We estimate parameters by optimizing retrospective forecasts. Our short-term model realizes a gain of about 6.0 over the time-independent model.

Abstract:A crucial aspect of operational earthquake forecasting research involves constructing a predictive model capable of assessing its efficacy while aligning with the regional seismic activity characteristics. This study delineates the Chinese continent, characterized by complex seismotectonics, into six distinct zones: Northeast, North China, South China, North–South Zone, Xinjiang, and Xizang. Three earthquake probability forecasting models are employed: the relative intensity model (RI), moment ratio model (MR), and simple smoothed seismicity model (Triple-S). Utilizing seismic catalog data from the China Earthquake Networks Center dating back to 1970, with an "anomaly learning period" spanning 10 years and a step length of 1 year, a retrospective sliding forecasting analysis is conducted for earthquakes of magnitude Ms 5.0 or greater over intervals of 3 and 5 years. The efficacy of the forecasting models is assessed through the Molchan chart and T-test methods. Model parameters are finetuned to determine the optimal computational parameters for the three forecasting models. A composite probability forecasting model, adaptable across different time scales and specifically tailored to the seismic activity characteristics of the Chinese continent, is developed. Analysis of seismic activity over the past decade offers insights into the current landscape. This analysis highlights that the high-risk areas identified by the composite model are consistent with previous findings and correlate well with actual earthquake occurrences in the Chinese continent in 2023.

Abstract:Many devastating earthquakes inflicted heavy casualties and property losses in the seismically active China Seismic Experimental Site area (CSES: 97.5° ~ 105.5°E, 21° ~ 32°N). We performed a first-order seismic zoning based on Neo-deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (NDSHA) in the study area delimited by 94° ~ 108°E and 19° ~ 35°N, containing the South-East margin of the Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan-Yunnan region. The seismic hazard is expressed by maps of peak ground displacement (PGD), peak ground velocity (PGV) and design ground acceleration (DGA) values, extracted from synthetic seismograms computed at a regional scale and mapped on a regular grid of 0.2° × 0.2° over the study area. For the computation of synthetic seismograms, we considered and updated all the available geophysical-geological-tectonic information, including historical and instrumental earthquake catalogues, seismogenic zones, seismogenic nodes, focal mechanisms, and geophysical structural models. We tested the performance of our assessments with available data (i.e., after the Great Wenchuan (2008, May 12, Ms = 8.0) and Lushan (2013, April 20, Ms = 7.0) earthquakes) and verified the negligible influence of large events located "far" from the study area. The results indicate the high seismic hazard of the region, with a particular attention (i.e., where DGA > 0.6 g) to the areas located around the main fault zones, e.g., the Longmenshan, Anninghe and Zemuhe Fault Zones. These first-order NDSHA zoning findings may serve as a knowledge basis to support both large- to mid-range preparedness actions and (multi-scenario) site-specific studies.

Study on medium- and short-term comprehensive prediction of the precursory spatial dynamic fields for strong earthquake in North China region

Abstract:The paper described a new method of sifting index-'Comparing-Screening Method' to select seismological indices through sifting more than 80 seismological parameters and making several tests of stability. We extract P-value of seismological precursory comprehensive prediction index, then develop a new method for the seismological quantitative integrated prediction (SQIP). Meanwhile, we study PP-value of non-seismological precursory index in earthquake prediction. The study follows the trail of anomalous behavior seismic activity with the dynamic thought to determine the strong earthquake location of medium-and short-term. Each item of precursory observational data is transformed to unified non-dimensional seismic information with the principle of mathematical-physical sciences. The R of predictionevaluation obtained is 0.66 in the example of the space-time scanning in North China. A certain practicability has been showed.

PS-100 Anti-Interference Electrical Observation System and Its Application to Earthquake Prediction Study

Abstract:A chief problem encountered in georesistivity observation, namely interference from electromagnetic noise in measuring process, is discussed in this paper. The application of a new set of electric observation system PS-100, in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, southwest China, is reported. The observation data from the four newly established stations indicates that the precision of the hourly georesistivity value reached 0.2% for the first time, and also that the CDMA-based PS-100 system has the high power of anti-interference ability, i.e. the capability to eliminate the influence of EM noise in georesistivity observations. Prior to the Ms5.6 Ludian earthquake on August 10, 2004, Yunnan province, co-seismic effect was recorded for the first time at Mianning station, which is 200 km far from the epicenter. The focal mechanism of the Ms5.6 event shows that Mianning station is situated at the compressive part of the primary wave Pn, which is consistent with the co-seismic georesistivity change. A change in georesistivity similar to that of gravity tide of M2 was observed at Mianning station, which can be interpreted as the of the stiffness tending to zero for the media at its surrounding area, and this may provide an example for the ‘model of impending earthquake precursor of geoelectricity triggered by tidal forces’.
Retrospective Study on Seismic Ionospheric Anomalies Based on Five-Year Observations from CSES

Abstract:The China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) is the first satellite of the space-based observational platform for the earthquake (EQ) monitoring system in China. It aims to monitor the ionospheric disturbances related to EQ activities by acquiring global electromagnetic fields, ionospheric plasma, energy particles, etc., opening a new path for innovative explorations of EQ prediction. This study analyzed 47 shallow strong EQ cases (Ms ≥ 7 and depth ≤ 100 km) recorded by CSES-01 from its launch in February 2018 to February 2023. The results show that: (1) For the majority (90%) of shallow strong EQs, at least one payload onboard CSES-01 recorded discernible abnormal signals before the mainshocks, and for over 65% of EQs, two or three payloads simultaneously recorded ionospheric disturbances; (2) the majority of anomalies recorded by different payloads onboard CSES-01 predominantly manifest within one week before or on the mainshock day, or occasionally about 11–15 days or 20–25 days before the mainshock; (3) typically, the abnormal signal detected by CSES-01 does not directly appear overhead the epicenter, but rather hundreds of kilometers away from the epicenter, and more preferably toward the equatorward direction; (4) the anomaly recognition rate of each payload differs, with the highest rate reaching more than 70% for the Electric Field Detector (EFD), Search-Coil Magnetometer (SCM), and Langmuir Probe (LAP); (5) for the different parameters analyzed in this study, the plasma density from LAP, and electromagnetic field in the ULF band recorded by EFD and SCM, and energetic electrons from the High-Energy Particle Package (HEPP) show a relatively high occurrence of abnormal phenomena during the EQ time. Although CSES-01 has recorded prominent ionospheric anomalies for a significant portion of EQ cases, it is still challenging to accurately extract and confirm the real seismic precursor signals by relying solely on a single satellite. The combination of seismology, electromagnetism, geodesy, geochemistry, and other multidisciplinary means is needed in the future's exploration to get infinitely closer to addressing the global challenge of EQ prediction.

Abstract:Abstract This study presents a passive-source ocean-bottom seismograph (OBS) experiment conducted in the southwest subbasin of the South China Sea (SCS) aimed at exploring the geodynamic processes shaping this short-lived oceanic basin. The successful deployment and recovery of 24 passive-source OBS units, including 14 I-7C types and 10 Pankun OBS units, resulted in the acquisition of one of the most extensive passive-source seismic data sets ever recorded in the SCS. We provide comprehensive details of the experiment, with a focus on evaluating the data quality and performance of the Pankun OBS units. This evaluation includes assessments of horizontal orientation determination, leveling system effectiveness, timing accuracy, and ambient noise spectrum. In addition, we compared the waveforms recorded by the Pankun OBS units with those from land stations and I-7C units, as well as the noise spectra between Pankun and global OBSs using the same seismometer. Although these comparisons suggest that the Pankun OBS achieves satisfactory performance, we identified a few inadequacies with this new instrument, such as issues with the differential pressure gauge, clock shifts, and sensor package calibration.
Constructing the Seismograms of Future Earthquakes in Yunnan, China, Using Compressed Sensing

Abstract:The ability to calculate the seismogram of an earthquake at a local or regional scale is critical but challenging for many seismological studies because detailed knowledge about the 3D heterogeneities in the Earth's subsurface, although essential, is often insufficient. Here, we present an application of compressed sensing technology that can help predict the seismograms of earthquakes at any position using data from past events randomly distributed in the same area in Jinggu County, Yunnan, China. This first data-driven approach for calculating seismograms generates a large dataset in 3D with a volume encompassing an active fault zone. The input number of earthquakes comprises only 1.27% of the total output events. We use the output data to create a database intended to find the best-matching waveform of a new event by applying an earthquake search engine, which instantly reveals the hypocenter and focal-mechanism solution.

Abstract:The Xianshuihe fault, located in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, stands as one of the most active faults in China. As assessing earthquake hazard relies on access to long‐term paleoseismological archives, this paper seeks to optimize the interpretation of paleoseismological records. We retrieved nine sediment cores from three lakes over a 30 km fault segment. Earthquake‐related deposits were identified through grain‐size analysis, XRF core scanning, and SEM observations of thin sections. Age models based on short‐lived radionuclides correlate these events with historical earthquakes, which are recorded with varying sensitivities to seismic intensity across the three lakes. We developed a code that evaluates the plausibility of rupture scenarios against sedimentary evidence: Each site is used as a binary paleoseismometer, indicating whether or not an earthquake reached a local intensity threshold. The combined evidence from the three sites allows to evaluate rupture scenarios on the Xianshuihe fault, according to rupture length‐magnitude scaling laws and intensity prediction equations. The most probable scenarios allow to discriminate the rupture area and magnitude range providing a good agreement with historical reconstructions. Our work demonstrates the potential of combining earthquake records to infer the magnitude and rupture zone of paleo‐earthquakes, even with a limited data set. Our approach, applicable across diverse geological settings and timescales, offers enhanced precision in understanding long‐term paleoseismology covering multiple earthquake cycles. However, establishing the synchronicity of events in such an active area—where earthquake return times are typically <100 years—demands highly accurate age models, which remains challenging.

Abstract:Based on the current progress in earthquake modelling for prediction consulting articles of international research, with throwing a sprat to catch a whale, we show the roadmap of numerical earthquake modelling for prediction in China.Referring to the course of numerical weather prediction development, the observation data assimilation should have priority to form 4D subsurface "cloud map" of the continuous model earthquake data in the earthquake preparing process of energy accumulation in linear to nonlinear stages and energy release from meta-instable to unstable slipping stage.The key steps of the roadmap for numerical earthquake prediction techniques are the assimilation of observation data and the mathematical expression for the meta-instable stage of earthquake process.
Improved medium-to-short-term earthquake predictions in China in 2022

Abstract:Every year, China should determine annual seismic hazard regions for earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and above in Mainland China in the next year. Meanwhile, the short-term earthquake potential in each seismic hazard region is evaluated by monthly analyzing geophysical observations in the same neighborhood and identifying anomalies therein. In 2022, China improved the strategies for these medium-to-short-term earthquake predictions. The annual seismic hazard regions are produced with the optimal methods selected by rigorous tests whose predictions are integrated through the Bayesian formula. And in short-term earthquake potential evaluation, in addition to tracking crucial anomalies, China pays attention to the changes in the number of observed anomalies. The practice in 2022 shows that more than 80% of earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and above in Mainland China occurred in annual seismic hazard regions. Besides, the largest ( M s 6.9 Menyuan, Qinghai) and the most disastrous ( M s 6.8 Luding, Sichuan) earthquakes were predicted in both annual and short terms. Some crucial anomalies were observed before these two earthquakes, whose evolutions correlate well with the earthquake time and location. The statistics of the near-field geophysical observations indicate that, prior to the mainshock, the number of anomalies increased significantly and migrated toward the epicenter.

Physics-based Earthquake Simulations of the Anninghe-Zemuhe-Daliangshan-Xiaojiang Fault System in Southwestern China

Abstract:Seismic hazard evaluation is important for urban construction and earthquake disaster prevention and mitiga-tion. However, because of the long recurrence intervals of large earthquakes (hundreds to thousands of years), seismic hazard assessment based on relatively short-term (tens of years) observational seismic catalogs is diffi-cult. Synthetic seismic catalogs provide a useful way to assess long-term seismic hazards. Based on the Coulomb failure criterion, we apply a quasi-static physics-based earthquake simulator (Virtual Quake) in a tectonically complicated region with several major strike-slip faults, namely, the Anninghe, Zemuhe, Daliangshan and Xiaojiang (AZDX) faults, in southwestern China. The slip rates of these major faults are constrained by GPS data, and friction is constrained by laboratory experiments. Considering the stress interactions among the fault system, a synthetic catalog over 20,000 years is simulated. The simulated catalog shows consistency with the observed seismicity in the spatial distribution of large earthquakes, b value and mean seismic rate. Based on the synthetic catalog, the mean recurrence intervals and probabilities of the recurrence interval for strong earthquakes (M >= 7) in each fault section are presented in detail. Moreover, qualitative analysis of seismic hazards is conducted for the AZDX fault region. Our results provide a helpful index to evaluate seismic hazards in such a complicated region. Plain language summary: Evaluating seismic hazards is important for building codes, risk prevention and miti-gation. Because large earthquakes are rare, modern observed earthquake catalogs are too short to evaluate seismic hazards precisely. Thus, numerical simulations are used to obtain synthetic earthquake catalogs for seismic hazard evaluation. Here, we present a physics-based model of stress accumulation, transfer and release, and simulate an earthquake sequence in the Anninghe-Zemuhe-Daliangshan-Xiaojiang fault system, south -western China. Thus, we obtain a synthetic catalog over 20,000 years. By comparing the spatial distributions of large earthquakes, b values, and mean seismic rates of the synthetic catalog and observed catalog, we find that the synthetic catalog is consistent with the observed catalog. Based on the synthetic seismic catalog, we sum-marize the mean strong seismic recurrence interval and the probability of the recurrence interval for each fault section. Qualitative analysis of seismic hazards is conducted for the AZDX fault region. Our results can help to evaluate long-term seismic hazards in a multiple-fault system.
Finite Element Method Simulation Of The Earthquake Preparation, Occurrence, And Recurrence Cycles

Abstract:The study of the quasi-periodic recurrence behavior of strong earthquakes is important for predicting and mitigating earthquake disasters. Reasonably and continuously simulating the interseismic-coseismic cycle process is the key to researching the spontaneous earthquake sequences. Based on the finite element dynamic implicit algorithm, this work develops a new methodology for simulating the interseismic-coseismic cycle processes. Our approach has the following advantages: (1) Continuously simulate the interseismic-coseismic cycle process without switching algorithms, and the time step size is automatically and smoothly scaled between quasi-static and dynamic states. (2) The stress field of the calculation model can be obtained under slow tectonic loading and gravity without artificially assigned. (3) The nucleation process of each earthquake event is formed slowly and naturally, and does not need to be given artificially. The simulation results show that the new methodology can continuously and steadily simulate the fault inter-seismiccoseismic cycle behavior, recurrence interval of strong earthquake, and the detailed coseismic rupture process. In addition, we study the influence of friction coefficient on the recurrence interval of strong earthquake. It turns out that the difference between the static and dynamic friction coefficients on the fault directly affect the recurrence interval of strong earthquake. The smaller the difference, the shorter the recurrence period is.
