Abstract:A hybrid parallel chaotic search and pattern search (HPCPS) optimization algorithm is proposed in this paper. Chaotic search has good global search ability but poor local search ability; while pattern search method is just in opposite. Both methods are sensitive to the initial points. Parallel chaotic search (PCS) starts searching from different initial points simultaneously and can effectively reduce the sensitivity of chaotic search. Based on the results of PCS, parallel varied step-length pattern search method is for more approaching the theoretical optima. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated by numerical examples. The results show that the proposed HPCPS not only enhance the steady of algorithm but also improve the success rate with good precision.
Parameter Optimization of Hydrologic Model Parameters Based on Regional Sensitivity Analysis and SCEM-UA Algorithm

Abstract:Shuffled Complex Evolution Metropolis Algorithm(SCEM-UA) is an adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampler,which can be applied to parameter optimization of nonlinear hydrologic model and uncertainty analysis.The efficiency and effectiveness of SCEM-UA for sampling the posterior distribution of model parameters are discussed based on the case study of the Min River catchment.The results show that SCEM-UA algorithm is consistent,effective and efficient in inferring the parameter posterior distribution.Moreover,the results of regional sensitivity analysis using samples from SCEM-UA algorithm sampler show that sensitivity and posterior distribution of parameters are highly interdependent.High sensitive parameters correspond with distinct peak in posterior distribution,while low sensitive parameters correspond with flat posterior distribution which could highlight the uncertainty of model parameters.
An Improved Quantification Method for Characterisation of Clay Microstructure Using SEM

Abstract:Clay is a material widely used in environmental geotechnics. Quantification of clay microstructure properties using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images is intuitively the simplest way, but the challenges remain in extracting more credible quantified micro-parameters that can represent the holistic macroscopic properties of clay from SEM images and with higher efficiency. In this paper, an improved quantification method is proposed to deal with this issue. The influence of different milling and drying methods on quantification results was analysed to improve reliability and efficiency. The A–K threshold determination method (A–K method) was proposed to calculate the optimal threshold in image processing. Also, the interval estimation method was introduced to obtain the optimal magnification and number of images. Then, this quantification method was applied to Hangzhou clay. The results show that anisotropy in the clay microstructure should be considered when choosing the observed surface. Moreover, there is no significant difference in micro-parameters between liquid nitrogen frozen-vacuum drying and critical point drying. A comparison among the A–K method, artificial method and theoretical methods that can determine thresholds shows that the proposed A–K method combines the advantages of all methods. The optimal magnification and number of images can be determined by mathematical theory, which also improves reliability and efficiency.
Complex Simulated Annealing and Its Application to Optimization Design of Cement-Soil Retaining Walls

Abstract:Complex method (CM) of traditional optimization methods combined with simulated annealing (SA) of intelligent optimization methods; and a new type of intelligent computation method, complex simulated annealing (CSA), was developed. Simulating analysis results show that the CSA has outstanding advantages in searching performance compared with the complex method or the simulated annealing. In addition, an optimization design model for cement-soil retaining wall (CSRW) was set up according to Chinese design codes; and the CSA was successfully applied to the optimization design of CSRW. Two case studies were given to verify the proposed method. The comparing computation results show that the proposed optimization method is feasible and reliable. Finally, the influence of reinforcement of passive earth pressure area located inside foundation pit on the embedded depth and effective breadth of CSRW was discussed.
A New Approach for Parameter Optimization in Land Surface Model

Abstract:In this study, a new parameter optimization method was used to investigate the expansion of conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation (CNOP) in a land surface model (LSM) using long-term enhanced field observations at Tongyu station in Jilin Province, China, combined with a sophisticated LSM (common land model, CoLM). Tongyu station is a reference site of the international Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observations Project (CEOP) that has studied semiarid regions that have undergone desertification, salination, and degradation since late 1960s. In this study, three key land-surface parameters, namely, soil color, proportion of sand or clay in soil, and leaf-area index were chosen as parameters to be optimized. Our study comprised three experiments: First, a single-parameter optimization was performed, while the second and third experiments performed triple- and six-parameter optimizations, respectively. Notable improvements in simulating sensible heat flux (SH), latent heat flux (LH), soil temperature (TS), and moisture (MS) at shallow layers were achieved using the optimized parameters. The multiple-parameter optimization experiments performed better than the single-parameter experminent. All results demonstrate that the CNOP method can be used to optimize expanded parameters in an LSM. Moreover, clear mathematical meaning, simple design structure, and rapid computability give this method great potential for further application to parameter optimization in LSMs.

Abstract:To effectively identify the key material parameters of different zones of concrete face rockfill dams and improve the efficiency of parameter optimization, a global sensitivity analysis method of parameters based on sparse polynomial chaotic expansion (sPCE) is proposed in this paper. The latin hypercube sampling method is used to select multiple groups of material parameters, and then finite element method is used to calculate the displacement of dam characteristic nodes in dam body. On this basis, the displacement is expanded by sPCE, and the polynomial basis function is reconstructed by orthogonal matching pursuit to improve the construction and analysis efficiency of the proxy model. According to the chaos coefficients, Sobol’ indices are calculated to evaluate the influence of the material parameters and their interaction on different displacements of the dam. The results show that the sPCE model can accurately simulate dam displacement and its statistical characteristics with a relatively small sample size. The sensitivity of the same parameter has spatial variability, and under the influence of parameter levels and spatial distribution of different materials, the parameter sensitivity ranking of different zones has certain differences. The proposed method provides a new reference to sensitivity analysis and uncertainty analysis for practical engineering.

Abstract:A comparative study of optimization techniques for identifying soil parameters in geotechnical engineering was first presented. The identification methodology with its 3 main parts, error function, search strategy, and identification procedure, was introduced and summarized. Then, current optimization methods were reviewed and classified into 3 categories with an introduction to their basic principles and applications in geotechnical engineering. A comparative study on the identification of model parameters from a synthetic pressuremeter and an excavation tests was then performed by using 5 among the mostly common optimization methods, including genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, simulated annealing, the differential evolution algorithm and the artificial bee colony algorithm. The results demonstrated that the differential evolution had the strongest search ability but the slowest convergence speed. All the selected methods could reach approximate solutions with very small objective errors, but these solutions were different from the preset parameters. To improve the identification performance, an enhanced algorithm was developed by implementing the Nelder‐Mead simplex method in a differential algorithm to accelerate the convergence speed with strong reliable search ability. The performance of the enhanced optimization algorithm was finally highlighted by identifying the Mohr‐Coulomb parameters from the 2 same synthetic cases and from 2 real pressuremeter tests in sand, and ANICREEP parameters from 2 real pressuremeter tests in soft clay.

Abstract:In this paper, we attempted to entend the application of conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation (CNOP) to the optimization of parameters in land surface model. And what is more, due to its other advantages, such as the clear mathematical meaning, the simple design structure, and the fast computing speed, it shows a great potential for further applications in parameters optimization of related problems.

Abstract:Optimizing the spatial pattern of carbon sequestration services is essential for enhancing regional ecosystem carbon sink capacity and promoting carbon budget equilibrium. This study leveraged land use/cover changes (LUCC), meteorological, ecological, and socio-economic data, integrating the InVEST and PLUS models to quantitatively evaluate changes in carbon sequestration services within three 2035 scenarios: economic development (ED), ecological protection (EP), and natural development (ND). Furthermore, it incorporated a Bayesian belief network (BBN) with decision-making optimization capabilities to pinpoint areas necessitating the optimization of spatial patterns for carbon sequestration services. The research findings reveal: (1) Substantial impacts of land use/cover changes on carbon sequestration services, with the spatial distribution of carbon sequestration capacity closely linked to land use patterns. (2) Considerable variation in carbon storage levels across different Changchun-Jilin-Tumen scenarios, while their spatial distribution patterns remain generally consistent. Over time, a notable declining trend in carbon storage levels by 2035 compared to previous years is observed. Spatially, the eastern and central regions of the study area emerge as high-value carbon storage zones, with the northwestern region exhibiting lower carbon storage values. (3) The three scenarios categorize CSS into ecological conservation zones, ecological buffer zones, construction development zones, and arable land protection areas. Notably, the construction development zones in the western and northwestern parts of the study area urgently require optimization management. Undertaking spatial pattern optimization studies based on the current state of CSS will sustain their sustainable development and assist in future spatial planning, carbon neutrality goals, and ecological restoration in the Changchun-Jilin-Tumen region.

Abstract:Tool geometric parameters, which are key factors to be considered in tool design, have a direct effect on tool cutting performance. Based on the diversity and complexity of geometric parameters and technological goals, we select cutting force and temperature as initial input conditions to build a comprehensive dimensionless tool geometric parameters evaluation method. According to the multilevel weight relationships between the technological goals and the basic cutting characteristics, the evaluation factors for cutting force and temperature are determined. The comprehensive evaluation method (CEM) is then applied to analyze and optimize the key parameters of a saw milling tool. As shown by the research results, the parameters obtained by the CEM prove that some tool parameters from actual production were reasonable, while others had re-optimized space. The CEM is shown to be effective and feasible. Also, the analysis results have an explicit guiding function for production practice.

With the help of MPSP method, all local optimization solutions (sets) can be determined after finite times of parameter space partition, which prevents the redundant searching near the known local solutions. Abstract:Cuckoo search (CS) algorithm is an efficient search technique for addressing numerical optimization problems. However, for the basic CS, the step size and mutation factor are sensitive to the optimization problems being solved. In view of this consideration, a new version namely the parameter control based CS (PCCS) algorithm is presented to strengthen the search accuracy and robustness. In this variant, the step size and mutation factor are dynamically updated according to the elite information stored in the historical archives at each generation, so as to realize the reasonable setting of these control parameters. For performance evaluation, numerical experiments are conducted on 25 benchmark functions from two different test suites. Moreover, the application in neural network optimization is also considered to further investigate the effectiveness. Experimental results indicate that the proposed PCCS algorithm is a promising and competitive method in terms of solution quality and convergence rate.

Abstract:The processing parameters directly affect the polishing quality of planar optics in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). In this paper, a novel multiparameter optimization method based on the fuzzy theory was proposed to evaluate the manufacturing efficiency and accuracy of flat optical elements with CMP. The evaluation criteria and optimized parameters for CMP optimization were selected. The optimized objective function—combined fuzzy index of CMP (CFICMP)—was introduced to combine different criteria. A L9(34) orthogonal experimental design was implemented to improve the efficiency of experiments and analyze the effect of three parameters (polishing pressure, rotational speed of polishing pad, and slurry flow rate) on CMP. A half-normal distribution was applied to fit the trend of CFICMP. To verify the validity and feasibility of CFICMP, the material removal rate and the material removal uniformity were set as the optimized functions in verification experiments. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimal parameters of CFICMP could achieve better manufacturing efficiency and accuracy of planar optics simultaneously. The proposed method provides a feasible and effective way to select optimized processing parameters for CMP.
Exploration of Semantic Geo-Object Recognition Based on the Scale Parameter Optimization Method for Remote Sensing Images

Abstract:Image segmentation is of significance because it can provide objects that are the minimum analysis units for geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA). Most segmentation methods usually set parameters to identify geo-objects, and different parameter settings lead to different segmentation results; thus, parameter optimization is critical to obtain satisfactory segmentation results. Currently, many parameter optimization methods have been developed and successfully applied to the identification of single geo-objects. However, few studies have focused on the recognition of the union of different types of geo-objects (semantic geo-objects), such as a park. The recognition of semantic geo-objects is likely more crucial than that of single geo-objects because the former type of recognition is more correlated with the human perception. This paper proposes an approach to recognize semantic geo-objects. The key concept is that a single geo-object is the smallest component unit of a semantic geo-object, and semantic geo-objects are recognized by iteratively merging single geo-objects. Thus, the optimal scale of the semantic geo-objects is determined by iteratively recognizing the optimal scales of single geo-objects and using them as the initiation point of the reset scale parameter optimization interval. In this paper, we adopt the multiresolution segmentation (MRS) method to segment Gaofen-1 images and tested three scale parameter optimization methods to validate the proposed approach. The results show that the proposed approach can determine the scale parameters, which can produce semantic geo-objects.

Abstract:Reload loading pattern design is the key content to economy, safety and flexibility of the operation after reloading in nuclear power plant. Loading pattern optimization is a typical combinatorial optimization problem with multi-objective and multi-parameter. Furthermore, the reload loading pattern optimization design is a very short time requirement, which makes it difficult for traditional optimization algorithms. In this study , a combined simulated annealing algorithm (CSA algorithm) are proposed. CSA effectively utilizes the characteristic regularity in the optimization space. Additionally, the combined database created by CSA can significantly increase the diversity of the algorithm, and greatly improve the optimization ability. In comparison to the traditional simulated annealing method, the optimization results of CSA are noticeably better. By contrasting the CSA with the improved genetic algorithm (GA), it can be seen that CSA can exploit the characteristic regularity of the reload loading pattern optimization more effectively, and the optimization efficiency and optimization results of the method are noticeably superior to GA.

Abstract:The parameters of rock slope excavation are mostly selected by analogy method of engineering geology at present. However,the selected parameters are chiefly determined by experience of the user and comparability between the newly designed slope and the slopes ranked in reference table,the theory is lack of reliability,and the newly-designed slope is over-safe or under-safe. Therefore,with respect to the rock slope of scattered structure, the slope excavation process is modeled by numerical simulation;and the variation of displacement and stress for various sidestep ratio,height and platform width are compared,the stability and economy of the slope excavation are fully considered;and the optimization parameters of slope excavation are proposed. The research will provide theoretical basis for slope excavation.

Abstract:Abstract. Physical parameterizations in general circulation models (GCMs), having various uncertain parameters, greatly impact model performance and model climate sensitivity. Traditional manual and empirical tuning of these parameters is time-consuming and ineffective. In this study, a "three-step" methodology is proposed to automatically and effectively obtain the optimum combination of some key parameters in cloud and convective parameterizations according to a comprehensive objective evaluation metrics. Different from the traditional optimization methods, two extra steps, one determining the model's sensitivity to the parameters and the other choosing the optimum initial value for those sensitive parameters, are introduced before the downhill simplex method. This new method reduces the number of parameters to be tuned and accelerates the convergence of the downhill simplex method. Atmospheric GCM simulation results show that the optimum combination of these parameters determined using this method is able to improve the model's overall performance by 9 %. The proposed methodology and software framework can be easily applied to other GCMs to speed up the model development process, especially regarding unavoidable comprehensive parameter tuning during the model development stage.

Abstract:With China's rapid economic development, the reduction in arable land has emerged as one of the most prominent problems in the nation. The long-term dynamic monitoring of arable land quality is important for protecting arable land resources. An efficient practice is to select optimal sample points while obtaining accurate predictions. To this end, the selection of effective points from a dense set of soil sample points is an urgent problem. In this study, data were collected from Donghai County, Jiangsu Province, China. The number and layout of soil sample points are optimized by considering the spatial variations in soil properties and by using an improved simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. The conclusions are as follows: (1) Optimization results in the retention of more sample points in the moderate- and high-variation partitions of the study area; (2) The number of optimal sample points obtained with the improved SA algorithm is markedly reduced, while the accuracy of the predicted soil properties is improved by approximately 5% compared with the raw data; (3) With regard to the monitoring of arable land quality, a dense distribution of sample points is needed to monitor the granularity.
A Multi-Model Ensemble Pattern Method to Estimate the Refractive Index Structure Parameter Profile and Integrated Astronomical Parameters in the Atmosphere

Abstract:In this study, we devised a constraint method, called multi-model ensemble pattern (MEP), to estimate the refractive index structure parameter (C-n(2)) profiles based on observational data and multiple existing models. We verified this approach against radiosonde data from field campaigns in China's eastern and northern coastal areas. Multi-dimensional statistical evaluations for the C-n(2) profiles and integrated astronomical parameters have proved MEP's relatively reliable performance in estimating optical turbulence in the atmosphere. The correlation coefficients of MEP and measurement overall C-n(2) in two areas are up to 0.65 and 0.76. A much higher correlation can be found for a single radiosonde profile. Meanwhile, the difference evaluation of integrated astronomical parameters also shows its relatively robust performance compared to a single model. Well network optimization and recovery evaluation of tight sandstone gas reservoirs

Abstract:<p>Tight sandstone gas reservoirs differ greatly in physical properties, and this kind of uncertainties severely set a limit to the steady production and efficient development of gas reservoirs. In order to effectively develop untapped reserves of tight sandstone gas reservoirs and improve their production and recovery, it is important to optimize the well pattern density for the ones with complex reservoir conditions. In this paper, a new index parameter is proposed for the optimization of well pattern density and recovery of tight sandstone gas reservoirs with complex reservoir conditions: the dynamic single-well control area (DSWCA). And the fuzzy synthetic evaluation method is used to establish the relationship between DSWCA and 7 reservoir physical parameters when there is no inter-well interference. The seven parameters are permeability, porosity, effective thickness, water saturation, threshold pressure gradient, productivity coefficient and storage coefficient. Besides, the calculated fuzzy prediction value of the DSWCA is compared with the geological well control area to determine whether there will be inter-well interference due to well pattern infilling under different physical reservoir conditions, and the variation curve of the interference probability with well pattern density is obtained. Finally, a gas recovery evaluation model is constructed combined with inter-well interference probability. The new evaluation method and model derivation comprehensively evaluate the influence of multiple reservoir physical parameters on the DSWCA and the quantitative relationship among them, thus capable of effectively calculating the DSWCA and predicting the production and recovery of the gas field beforehand from a very early stage using the related parameters. The new method, combined with a large number of physical parameter data of fractured vertical wells, was applied in the Su-6 block of the Sulige gas field and compared with the results of actual gas well production dynamics, revealing the consistency of the two results. This method is verified to be reasonable and reliable under certain conditions, and the new method for gas recovery evaluation provides new ideas for the well pattern optimization in tight sandstone gas reservoirs.</p>
