Abstract:For most purposes, one can replace the use of Rolle's theorem and the mean value theorem, which are not constructively valid, by the law of bounded change. The proof of two basic results in numerical analysis, the error term for Lagrange interpolation and Simpson's rule, however seem to require the full strength of the classical Rolle's Theorem. The goal of this note is to justify these two results constructively, using ideas going back to Amp\`ere and Genocchi.

Abstract:In this paper, we give some refinements of Simpson's rule in cases when it is not applicable in its classical form i.e., when the target function is not four times differentiable on a given interval. Some sharp two-sided inequalities for an extended form of Simpson's rule are also proven.

Abstract:We show how the error term for the Trapezium Rule can be estimated, by solving an initial value problem using a Runge-Kutta method. The error term can then be added to the Trapezium approximation, yielding a much more accurate result. We also show how the risk of singularities in the relevant initial value problem can be mitigated.

Abstract:Hermite's rule for numerical integration is presented and compared with the more familiar Simpson's rule. Through several examples, the power of Hermite's rule for numerical summation is then demonstrated. It is established that Hermite's rule surpasses Simpson's rule due to better error estimates and due to the fact that Simpson's rule is not easily applicable to numerical summation. For these reasons, it is argued that Hermite's rule should replace Simpson's rule in the undergraduate curriculum. The derivation of Hermite's rule is accessible to undergraduates, and the topic should be included in the undergraduate curriculum.

On the distribution of the error terms in the divisor and circle problems

Abstract:We study the distribution functions of several classical error terms in analytic number theory, focusing on the remainder term in the Dirichlet divisor problem $\Delta(x)$. We first bound the discrepancy between the distribution function of $\Delta(x)$ and that of a corresponding probabilistic random model, improving results of Heath-Brown and Lau. We then determine the shape of its large deviations in a certain uniform range, which we believe to be the limit of our method, given our current knowledge about the linear relations among the $\sqrt{n}$ for square-free positive integers $n$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the error terms in the Gauss circle problem and in the second moment of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.

Abstract:Simple proofs of the midpoint, trapezoidal and Simpson's rules are proved for numerical integration on a compact interval. The integrand is assumed to be twice continuously differentiable for the midpoint and trapezoidal rules, and to be four times continuously differentiable for Simpson's rule. Errors are estimated in terms of the uniform norm of second or fourth derivatives of the integrand. The proof uses only integration by parts, applied to the second or fourth derivative of the integrand, multiplied by an appropriate polynomial or piecewise polynomial function. A corrected trapezoidal rule that includes the first derivative of the integrand at the endpoints of the integration interval is also proved in this manner, the coefficient in the error estimate being smaller than for the midpoint and trapezoidal rules. The proofs are suitable for presentation in a calculus or elementary numerical analysis class. Several student projects are suggested.

Abstract:In recent years, a lot of research was devoted to Simpson's rule for numerical integration. In the paper we study a natural successor of Simpson's rule, namely the Boole's rule. It is the Newton-Cotes formula in the case where the interval of integration is divided into four subintervals of equal length. With computer software assistance, we prove novel error bounds for Boole's rule.

Abstract:The use of the Trapezoidal rule or the box-difference scheme in the solution of renal models is well known [1–3]. In this paper we develop an implicit form of Simpson's rule and use it to solve the test problem for renal models described recently in this journal [3,4]. We also show for this problem, how the differential equations associated with one of the tubes (ascending vasa recta) can be replaced by algebraic equations, thus eliminating the related truncation errors. Computational results are given showing the improvement in overall accuracy.

Abstract:The main objective of this study is to establish error estimates of the new parameterized quadrature rule similar to and covering the second Simpson formula. To do this, we start by introducing a new parameterized identity involving the right and left Riemann-Liouville integral operators. On the basis of this identity, we establish some fractional Simpson-type inequalities for functions whose absolute value of the first derivatives are s-convex in the second sense. Also, we examine the special cases $ m = 1/2 $ and $ m = 3/8 $, as well as the two cases $ s = 1 $ and $ \alpha = 1 $, which respectively represent the classical convexity and the classical integration. By applying the definition of convexity, we derive larger estimates that only used the extreme points. Finally, we provide applications to quadrature formulas, special means, and random variables.

Abstract:We consider stochastic integration with respect to fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with $H < 1/2$. The integral is constructed as the limit, where it exists, of a sequence of Riemann sums. A theorem by Gradinaru, Nourdin, Russo & Vallois (2005) holds that a sequence of Simpson's rule Riemann sums converges in probability for a sufficiently smooth integrand $f$ and when the stochastic process is fBm with $H > 1/10$. For the case $H = 1/10$, we prove that the sequence of sums converges in distribution. Consequently, we have an It\^o-like formula for the resulting stochastic integral. The convergence in distribution follows from a Malliavin calculus theorem that first appeared in Nourdin and Nualart (2010).

Abstract:In 2008 I thought I found a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis, but there was an error. In the Spring 2020 I believed to have fixed the error, but it cannot be fixed. I describe here where the error was. It took me several days to find the error in a careful checking before a possible submission to a payable review offered by one leading journal. There were three simple lemmas and one simple theorem, all were correct, yet there was an error: what Lemma 2 proved was not exactly what Lemma 3 needed. So, it was the connection of the lemmas. This paper came out empty, but I have found a different proof of the Riemann Hypothesis and it seems so far correct. In the discussion at the end of this paper I raise a matter that I think is of importance to the review process in mathematics.

Abstract:In this paper, we first construct an integral identity associated with tempered fractional operators. By using this identity, we have found the error bounds for Simpson's second formula, namely Newton–Cotes quadrature formula for differentiable convex functions in the framework of tempered fractional integrals and classical calculus. Furthermore, it is also shown that the newly established inequalities are the extension of comparable inequalities inside the literature.

Error Distribution for One-Dimensional Stochastic Differential Equation Driven By Fractional Brownian Motion

Abstract:This paper deals with asymptotic errors, limit theorems for errors between numerical and exact solutions of stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by one-dimensional fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The Euler-Maruyama, higher-order Milstein, and Crank-Nicolson schemes are among the most studied numerical schemes for SDE (fSDE) driven by fBm. Most previous studies of asymptotic errors have derived specific asymptotic errors for these schemes as main theorems or their corollary. Even in the one-dimensional case, the asymptotic error was not determined for the Milstein or the Crank-Nicolson method when the Hurst exponent is less than or equal to $1/3$ with a drift term. We obtained a new evaluation method for convergence and asymptotic errors. This evaluation method improves the conditions under which we can prove convergence of the numerical scheme and obtain the asymptotic error under the same conditions. We have completely determined the asymptotic error of the Milstein method for arbitrary orders. In addition, we have newly determined the asymptotic error of the Crank-Nicolson method for $1/4<H\leq 1/3$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the "a posteriori" error estimate corresponding to the Brinkman-Darcy-Forchheimer problem. We introduce the variational formulation discretised by using the finite element method. Then, we establish an "a posteriori" error estimation with two types of error indicators related to the discretization and to the linearization. Finally, numerical investigations are shown and discussed.

Abstract:We refine a previous work of K. Matsumoto and H. Ishikawa, obtaining an asymptotic formula for the mean square of the product of the Riemann zeta-function and a Dirichlet polynomial in the critical strip (1/4<$\sigma$<1/2), by obtaining an explicit formula of Atkinson type for its error term. This work is closely related to the generalized Dirichlet divisor problem. The form of these formulas is akin to, yet more complex than, Voronoi's formulas in the divisor problem.
