Abstract:We study the distribution functions of several classical error terms in analytic number theory, focusing on the remainder term in the Dirichlet divisor problem $\Delta(x)$. We first bound the discrepancy between the distribution function of $\Delta(x)$ and that of a corresponding probabilistic random model, improving results of Heath-Brown and Lau. We then determine the shape of its large deviations in a certain uniform range, which we believe to be the limit of our method, given our current knowledge about the linear relations among the $\sqrt{n}$ for square-free positive integers $n$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the error terms in the Gauss circle problem and in the second moment of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.

Abstract:In this article, we improve on two explicit bounds of order $\log t$ for $\sigma$ close to $1$: $|\zeta'(\sigma +it)/\zeta(\sigma +it)|$ and $|1/\zeta(\sigma +it)|$. Our method provides marked improvements in the constants, especially with regards to the latter. These savings come from replacing a lemma of Borel and Carathédory, with a Jensen-type one of Heath-Brown's. Using an argument involving the trigonometric polynomial, we additionally provide a slight asymptotic improvement: $1/\zeta(\sigma +it) \ll (\log t)^{11/12}$.

Abstract:Efficient high order numerical methods for evolving the solution of an ordinary differential equation are widely used. The popular Runge--Kutta methods, linear multi-step methods, and more broadly general linear methods, all have a global error that is completely determined by analysis of the local truncation error. In prior work in we investigated the interplay between the local truncation error and the global error to construct {\em error inhibiting schemes} that control the accumulation of the local truncation error over time, resulting in a global error that is one order higher than expected from the local truncation error. In this work we extend our error inhibiting framework to include a broader class of time-discretization methods that allows an exact computation of the leading error term, which can then be post-processed to obtain a solution that is two orders higher than expected from truncation error analysis. We define sufficient conditions that result in a desired form of the error and describe the construction of the post-processor. A number of new explicit and implicit methods that have this property are given and tested on a variety of ordinary and partial differential equation. We show that these methods provide a solution that is two orders higher than expected from truncation error analysis alone.

Abstract:We give bounds on the error in the asymptotic approximation of the log-Gamma function $\ln\Gamma(z)$ for complex $z$ in the right half-plane. These improve on earlier bounds by Behnke and Sommer (1962), Spira (1971), and Hare (1997). We show that $|R_{k+1}(z)/T_k(z)| < \sqrt{\pi k}$ for nonzero $z$ in the right half-plane, where $T_k(z)$ is the $k$-th term in the asymptotic series, and $R_{k+1}(z)$ is the error incurred in truncating the series after $k$ terms. If $k \le |z|$, then the stronger bound $|R_{k+1}(z)/T_k(z)| < (k/|z|)^2/(\pi^2-1) < 0.113$ holds. Similarly for the asymptotic approximation of $\ln\Gamma(z+\frac{1}{2})$, except that a factor $\eta_k = 1/(1-2^{1-2k})$ multiplies some of the bounds. We deduce similar bounds for asymptotic approximation of the Riemann-Siegel theta function $\vartheta(t)$. We show that the accuracy of a well-known approximation to $\vartheta(t)$ can be improved by including an exponentially small term in the approximation. This improves the attainable accuracy for real $t>0$ from $O(\exp(-\pi t))$ to $O(\exp(-2\pi t))$. We discuss a similar example due to Olver (1964), and a connection with the Stokes phenomenon.

They depend on $d$ but for $d\ge2$ for example $A_d< 7.5$, $B_d<5.8$ and $C_d<10.9$. We follow the reasoning of van der Corput in three papers published in 1937, that contained an error. I correct this error and try to get the smallest possible constants. We apply this theorem to zeta sums, giving the best choice of $d$ in each case. Also, we prove that our Theorem implies Titchmarsh's Theorem 5.13.

Abstract:For $i\in \{1,2,3\}$, let $E_i(x)$ denote the error term in each of the three theorems of Mertens on the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers. We show that for each $i\in \{1,2\}$, the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the condition $\int_2^X E_i(x)\,\mathrm{d}x>0$ for all $X>2$, and we examine assumptions under which the equivalence also holds for $i=3$. In addition, we generalize this to analogues of Mertens' theorems concerning prime sums twisted by quadratic Dirichlet characters or restricted to arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we present a smooth version of Landau's explicit formula for the von Mangoldt arithmetical function. By assuming the validity of the Riemann hypothesis, we show that in order to determine whether a natural number [math] is a prime number, it is sufficient to know the location of a number of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function of order [math]. Next we use Heisenberg's inequality to support the conjecture that this number of zeros cannot be essentially diminished.

A Theory of Trotter Error

Abstract:The Lie-Trotter formula, together with its higher-order generalizations, provides a direct approach to decomposing the exponential of a sum of operators. Despite significant effort, the error scaling of such product formulas remains poorly understood. We develop a theory of Trotter error that overcomes the limitations of prior approaches based on truncating the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff expansion. Our analysis directly exploits the commutativity of operator summands, producing tighter error bounds for both real- and imaginary-time evolutions. Whereas previous work achieves similar goals for systems with geometric locality or Lie-algebraic structure, our approach holds in general. We give a host of improved algorithms for digital quantum simulation and quantum Monte Carlo methods, including simulations of second-quantized plane-wave electronic structure, $k$-local Hamiltonians, rapidly decaying power-law interactions, clustered Hamiltonians, the transverse field Ising model, and quantum ferromagnets, nearly matching or even outperforming the best previous results. We obtain further speedups using the fact that product formulas can preserve the locality of the simulated system. Specifically, we show that local observables can be simulated with complexity independent of the system size for power-law interacting systems, which implies a Lieb-Robinson bound as a byproduct. Our analysis reproduces known tight bounds for first- and second-order formulas. Our higher-order bound overestimates the complexity of simulating a one-dimensional Heisenberg model with an even-odd ordering of terms by only a factor of $5$, and is close to tight for power-law interactions and other orderings of terms. This suggests that our theory can accurately characterize Trotter error in terms of both asymptotic scaling and constant prefactor.

Abstract:We refine a previous work of K. Matsumoto and H. Ishikawa, obtaining an asymptotic formula for the mean square of the product of the Riemann zeta-function and a Dirichlet polynomial in the critical strip (1/4<$\sigma$<1/2), by obtaining an explicit formula of Atkinson type for its error term. This work is closely related to the generalized Dirichlet divisor problem. The form of these formulas is akin to, yet more complex than, Voronoi's formulas in the divisor problem.

Moreover, we conjecture that $li_{0}(x) \le \pi(x) \le li_{1}(x)$ and $\underline{li}(x) \le \pi(x) \le \overline{li}(x)$ for all $x \ge e$, here $\pi(x)$ is the prime counting function and we show that if one of those conjectures is true then the Riemann Hypothesis is true.

Abstract:We improve the lower bound for $V(T)$, the number of sign changes of the error term $\psi(x)-x$ in the Prime Number Theorem in the interval $[1,T]$ for large $T$. We show that \[ \liminf_{T\to\infty}\frac{V(T)}{\log T}\geq\frac{\gamma_{0}}{\pi}+\frac{1}{60} \] where $\gamma_{0}=14.13\ldots$ is the imaginary part of the lowest-lying non-trivial zero of the Riemann zeta-function. The result is based on a new density estimate for zeros of the associated $k$-function, over $4\cdot10^{21}$ times better than previously known estimates of this type.

Abstract:This paper studies the error introduced ($\displaystyle \varepsilon(x)$) by the Stieltjes asymptotic approximation series $\displaystyle li_{*}(x) = \frac{x}{\log(x)}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{k!}{\log^{k}(x)} + (\log(x)-n)\frac{xn!}{\log^{n+1}(x)}$ to the logarithmic integral function $li(x)$ with $\displaystyle n = \lfloor \log(x) \rfloor$ for all $x\ge e$. For this purpose, this paper uses some relations between term $\displaystyle \frac{n!}{\log^{n}(x)}$ and Stirling's approximation formula. In particular, this paper establishes two non-asymptotic lower and upper bounds for $\varepsilon(e^n)$ with $n \ge 1$ and $1 \le m \le n$: (i) $\displaystyle \varepsilon(e^m) + \frac{\sqrt{2\pi}}{8}\sum_{k=m+1}^{n} \frac{1}{k^{\frac{3}{2}}} \le \varepsilon(e^n) \le \varepsilon(e^{m}) + \frac{\sqrt{2\pi}}{4}\sum_{k=m+1}^{n} \frac{k+2}{k^{\frac{5}{2}}}$ (ii) $\displaystyle L_m - \frac{\sqrt{2\pi}}{4\sqrt{n+1}} \le \varepsilon_{n} \le R_m - \frac{\sqrt{2\pi}}{2\sqrt{n}} - \frac{\sqrt{2\pi}}{3\sqrt{n^3}}$. Abstract:We demonstrate the impact of a generic zero-free region and zero-density estimate on the error term in the prime number theorem. Consequently, we are able to improve upon previous work of Pintz and provide an essentially optimal error term for some choices of the zero-free region. As an example, we show that if there are no zeros $\rho=\beta+it$ of $\zeta(s)$ for $$\beta>1-\frac{1}{c(\log t)^{2/3}(\log\log t)^{1/3}},$$ then $$\frac{|\psi(x)-x|}{x}\ll\exp(-\omega(x))\frac{(\log x)^9}{(\log\log x)^3},$$ where $\psi(x)$ is the Chebyshev prime-counting function, and $$\omega(x)=\left(\frac{5^6}{2^2\cdot 3^4\cdot c^3}\right)^{1/5}\frac{(\log x)^{3/5}}{(\log\log x)^{1/5}}.$$ This improves upon the best known error term for the prime number theorem, previously given by $$\frac{|\psi(x)-x|}{x}\ll_{\varepsilon}\exp(-(1-\varepsilon)\omega(x))$$ for any $\varepsilon>0$.

Large deviations of the argument of the Riemann zeta function

Abstract:Let $S(t) = \frac{1}{\pi}\Im \log\zeta\left(\frac{1}{2}+it\right)$. We prove an unconditional lower bound on the measure of the sets $\{t\in [T,2T] \colon S(t) \geq V\}$ for $\sqrt{\log\log T} \leq V \ll \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$. For $V \leq (\log T)^{1/3-\varepsilon}$ our bound has a Gaussian shape with variance proportional to $\log\log T$. At the endpoint, $V \asymp \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$, our result implies the best known $\Omega$-theorem for $S(t)$ which is due to Tsang. We also explain how the method breaks down for $V \gg \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$ given our current knowledge about the zeros of the zeta function. Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis we extend our results to the range $\sqrt{\log\log T} \leq V \ll \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/2}$.

Abstract:A special case of an Entry in Part II of Ramanujan's Notebooks is such that 1+15(12)2+19(1⋅32⋅4)2+⋯=Γ4(14)16π2. This formula leads us to consider the higher-order version of the above series given by replacing the squares of normalized central binomial coefficients with fourth powers. Using a Fourier–Legendre expansion introduced in a 2022 article by Cantarini, together with a multiple elliptic integral evaluation conjectured by Wan and proved by Zhou, we prove the very natural extension shown below of Ramanujan's formula: 1+15(12)4+19(1⋅32⋅4)4+⋯=Γ8(14)96π5. Furthermore, and in a closely related way, we show how a main result in an article by Papanikolas et al. concerning a Calabi–Yau threefold is equivalent to the evaluation of a Clebsch–Gordan-type multiple elliptic integral related to the work of Zhou and Brychkov.
