Abstract:Droplets‐based nanogenerators are droplet harvesting devices for energy scavenging effectively through contact electrification, piezoelectrification, and other processes. The outputs from droplet‐based nanogenerators can be used in many sensor networks and portable electronics. With further development, droplet harvesting can become a sustainable energy resource with the proper utilization of droplet‐based nanogenerators. Water is one of the most sustainable resources in the world, offering an abundance of hydro energy. Getting a large amount of electricity through conventional water energy harvesting is expensive, with complex mechanisms and bulky installation systems. In the case of the small amount of energy for some portable electronic devices and sensor systems, water droplet harvesting as a sustainable energy resource has become a forward‐looking step to meet the future demand for green energy. The ultimate demand for green energy in the future requires all the possible sustainable energy sources surrounding human society. The emerging potential of water droplet‐driven energy‐harvesting nanogenerators can meet a significant portion of the green energy demand. In this review, the recent developments in droplets‐driven nanogenerators for effective energy scavenging is summarized. It also includes an extensive discussion about the device structures from the material selection and output performance aspects. This review also gives a brief discussion on the applications of droplet‐based nanogenerators and outlines the future possibilities via the current improvement in designs and fabrication strategies that have been introduced by the field.

Abstract:A significant bottleneck that hampers the adoption of many current technologies and wearable devices is power supply requirements. The quest to innovate portable self-powered systems has shed light on miniaturized energy harvesting devices called nanogenerators (NGs) that apply a wide variety of nanomaterials to achieve feasibility, flexibility, and enhanced electrical output. This systematic review provides a nearly complete list of all the NG devices present in the literature that have used carbon nanomaterials and harnessed renewable energy sources, namely mechanical, thermal, and fluid/blue energies, which were separately discussed and only deliberated to a certain limit with little demonstration of the materials and devices in previous publications. This review also draws attention to the overall aspects of carbon nanomaterial-based NGs, particularly in terms of electrical performance, and the role of carbon nanomaterials in how they have contributed to the advancement and application of energy harvesting devices, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, reduced graphene oxide, activated carbon, and graphitic carbon. Finally, the concluding section addresses the current challenges and provides an outlook on the potential future trends in energy harvesting.
Droplet-enabled controllable manipulation of tribo-charges from liquid-solid interface

Abstract:Efficient utilization of electrostatic charges is paramount for numerous applications, from printing to kinetic energy harvesting. However, existing technologies predominantly focus on the static qualities of these charges, neglecting their dynamic capabilities as carriers for energy conversion. Herein, we report a paradigm-shifting strategy that orchestrates the swift transit of surface charges, generated through contact electrification, via a freely moving droplet. This technique ingeniously creates a besptengngoke charged surface which, in tandem with a droplet acting as a transfer medium to the ground, facilitates targeted charge displacement and amplifies electrical energy collection. The spontaneously generated electric field between the charged surface and needle tip, along with the enhanced water ionization under the electric field, proves pivotal in facilitating controlled charge transfer. By coupling the effects of charge self-transfer, contact electrification, and electrostatic induction, a dual-electrode droplet-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (DD–TENG) is designed to harvest the water-related energy, exhibiting a two-order-of-magnitude improvement in electrical output compared to traditional single-electrode systems. Our strategy establishes a fundamental groundwork for efficient water drop energy acquisition, offering deep insights and substantial utility for future interdisciplinary research and applications in energy science.

Abstract:The self-powered system works without any external power source. In the past years, the focus had been on the use of nanogenerators for self-powered wearable and implantable sensors. Nanogenerators can convert mechanical energy into electricity. The human body is an excellent source of mechanical motions and thus can be used as a source for the nanogenerators. The nanogenerators thus eliminate the requirement of battery for various applications, including sensors. This chapter discusses the working mechanism of piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) and triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG. A summary of nanogenerator based healthcare sensors is made, including the implantable heartbeat and breath sensor. Nonetheless, many challenges need to be addressed before the commercialization of nanogenerator based sensors, including the life-time, output performance, stable encapsulation, etc. In the future, overcoming the issue will make nanogenerators a promising candidate for healthcare applications.
Droplet Energy Harvesting System Based on Total-Current Nanogenerator

Abstract:The droplet-based nanogenerator (DNG) is a highly promising technology for harvesting high-entropy water energy in the era of the Internet of Things. Yet, despite the exciting progress made in recent years, challenges have emerged unexpectedly for the AC-type DNG-based energy system as it transitions from laboratory demonstrations to real-world applications. In this work, we propose a high-performance DNG system based on the total-current nanogenerator concept to address these challenges. This system utilizes the water-charge-shuttle architecture for easy scale-up, employs the field effect to boost charge density of the triboelectric layer, adopts an on-solar-panel design to improve compatibility with solar energy, and is equipped with a novel DC-DC buck converter as power management circuit. These features allow the proposed system to overcome the existing bottlenecks of DNG and empower the system with superior performances compared with previous ones. Notably, with the core architecture measuring only 15 cm × 12.5 cm × 0.3 cm in physical dimensions, this system reaches a record-high open-circuit voltage of 4200 V, capable of illuminating 1440 LEDs, and can charge a 4.7 mF capacitor to 4.5 V in less than 24 min. In addition, the practical potential of the proposed DNG system is further demonstrated through a self-powered, smart greenhouse application scenario. These demonstrations include the continuous operation of a thermohygrometer, the operation of a Bluetooth plant monitor, and the all-weather energy harvesting capability. This work will provide valuable inspiration and guidance for the systematic design of next-generation DNG to unlock the sustainable potential of distributed water energy for real-world applications.

Abstract:Recent advancements in energy harvesting have led to innovative methods for converting droplet motion into electricity, such as droplet triboelectric nanogenerators (D-TENGs). However, enhancing their power generation capacity and efficiency remains a challenge. We present a novel surface engineering approach that significantly boosts the electrical outputs of the D-TENGs. By grafting perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTMS) onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces pre-treated with sandpaper, we achieve a dual effect: fluoridation and increased contact area between droplets and PDMS. This modification, when applied to a droplet-based TENG, yields a remarkable 10–20 fold increase in power metrics such as current, charge, and voltage as compared to untreated counterparts, resulting in an energy conversion efficiency of 17.1% under a 30 MΩ load. Our enhanced D-TENG efficiently harvested energy from falling tap water droplets, producing a current of ∼2 mA. Remarkably, a single droplet impact could illuminate 400 LED lights. Furthermore, when coupled with capacitors, the device powered a hygrometer and 3 W light bulbs, demonstrating substantial potential for real-world applications. This breakthrough in surface engineering for energy harvesters represents a significant step forward in the efficient and powerful generation of electricity from droplet motions.

Abstract:Nanoenergy is a field of studying the small-scale, highly efficient energy harvesting, storage, and applications by using nanomaterials and nanodevices. Nanogenerators are developed to harvest these small-scale energies in the ambient environment, which were first invented in our group in 2006. In the past decade, we have developed nanogenerators based on piezoelectric and triboelectric effects for mechanical energy harvesting, and those based on pyroelectric and thermoelectric effects for thermal energy harvesting. We also explored other novel nanogenerators such as that based on ion streams. The proposed nanogenerators will facilitate the development of self-powered systems, which enables efficient energy utilization and sustainable operations of mobile devices for “smart” wearable technology, health monitoring, biomedical sensing, environmental protection, and even security.

A Filter Paper-Based Nanogenerator via Water-Drop Flow

Abstract:With the increase in energy crisis, it is a promising strategy to develop a nanogenerators for harvesting small amounts of energy. Herein, a flexible and robust filter paper-based nanogenerator (FPNG), fabricated by printing a modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes ink slurry on filter papers with the specific as-designed shape, is developed. The results show that the streaming voltage and current are induced from the water-drop flow across the surface of FPNG, such as rainwater. Compared with the energy-harvesting performance of FPNG under different conditions, the maximum streaming voltage is obtained with 20 mL h(-1) injection speed of 1 x 10(-3) m NaCl solution at 75 degrees placement angle for quantitative medium speed FPNG. Under optimum conditions, the power reaches to 9.91 +/- 1.39 pW per droplet. Then, the streaming voltage and current produced from dropping rainwater onto the FPNG are investigated and the power is 2.4 +/- 0.65 pW per droplet. It is assumed that there are abundant pores and oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of filter papers with overlapped and crosslinked morphology, providing vast active sites and ion diffusion channels to enhance the electric double layer capacitance. Therefore, FPNG has good prospects for applications in harvesting energy from water-drops.

Abstract:A high‐efficiency droplet energy nanogenerator (DENG) is devised relying on straightforward fabrication and recycled materials. It achieves superb electrical outputs, with a voltage of > 190 V, a power density of 65W m−2, and an energy conversion efficiency of 3.6%. A single device weighs ≈0.8 grams, making it easily implemented on diverse outdoor scenarios for self‐sustainable environmental intelligent networks. How far are the authors as a community from achieving self‐sustainable ambient intelligence? The question calls for rational energy layouts to satisfy the ubiquitous power demands from diverse terminal products. Harnessing energy directly from the surroundings thus provides ideal solutions. The majority of existing environmental harvesters rely on sophisticated procedures and expensive or toxic materials; while others attempt to streamline the complexity at the cost of compromising performance. This entails transducers that exhibit superb outputs and also employ cost‐effective, even recycled materials and straightforward protocols to render ubiquitous deployments. Here, a high‐efficiency droplet energy nanogenerator (DENG) is devised to satisfy all the requirements. The DENG is fabricated by directly coating a composite layer on a recycled digital video disk surface. It achieves superb electricity generation from one droplet, with an output voltage of >190 V at an instantaneous power density of 65 W m−2, and an energy conversion efficiency of 3.60%. Diverse demonstrations confirm the applicability of the DENG in environmental networks, encompassing self‐sustainable "on plants" sensing systems, smart building windows, and remote environmental monitoring platforms. In light of these superiorities, it is believed that the DENG may open up new alternative routes for future energy strategies.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising solution to harvest the low-frequency, low-actuation-force, and high-entropy droplet energy. Conventional attempts mainly focus on maximizing electrostatic energy harvest on the liquid-solid surface, but enormous kinetic energy of droplet hitting the substrate is directly dissipated, limiting the output performance. Here, a dual-mode TENG (DM-TENG) is proposed to efficiently harvest both electrostatic energy at liquid-solid surface from a droplet TENG (D-TENG) and elastic potential energy of the vibrated cantilever from a contact-separation TENG (CS-TENG). Triggered by small droplets, the flexible cantilever beam, rather than conventional stiff ones, can easily vibrate multiple times with large amplitude, enabling frequency multiplication of CS-TENG and producing amplified output charges. Combining with the top electrode design to sufficiently utilize charges at liquid-solid interface, a record-high output charge of 158 nC is realized by single droplet. The energy conversion efficiency of DM-TENG is 2.66-fold of D-TENG. An array system with the specially designed power management circuit is also demonstrated for building self-powered system, offering promising applications for efficiently harvesting raindrop energy.

Abstract:Droplet energy harvesting technologies, such as droplet triboelectric nanogenerators (D-TENGs) and droplet-based electricity generators (DEGs), which are not restricted by geographical location, have been vigorously developed in recent years. However, achieving electricity generation with high performance is still challenging. Here, we demonstrate a new approach for droplet-based energy harvesting device named droplet electrochemical cell (DECC) which could enhance energy generation performance by utilizing the formation of non-equilibrium electrical double layers. The DECC is designed by drawing inspiration from the zinc-copper primary battery system and demonstrated remarkable results when tested with dynamically impinging water droplets. The peak current and transferred charge generated by a 100 μL droplet are found to be 400 μA and 3.2 μC, respectively. The short circuit current is also found to increase by approximately 30 times when the dynamic impinging frequency of the droplets is increased. This study provides valuable insights into the development of energy harvesting devices based on droplets.

Noncontact liquid–solid nanogenerators as self-powered droplet sensors

Abstract:Liquid–solid triboelectric nanogenerators (L–S TENGs) can generate corresponding electrical signal responses through the contact separation of droplets and dielectrics and have a wide range of applications in energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. However, the contact between the droplet and the electret will cause the contact L–S TENG's performance degradation or even failure. Here we report a noncontact triboelectric nanogenerator (NCLS-TENG) that can effectively sense droplet stimuli without contact with droplets and convert them into electrical energy or corresponding electrical signals. Since there is no contact between the droplet and the dielectric, it can continuously and stably generate a signal output. To verify the feasibility of NCLS-TENG, we demonstrate the modified murphy's dropper as a smart infusion monitoring system. The smart infusion monitoring system can effectively identify information such as the type, concentration, and frequency of droplets. NCLS-TENG show great potential in smart medical, smart wearable and other fields.

Abstract:Water-triboelectric nanogenerators, leveraging contact electrification between water and solid surfaces, have exhibited significant potential to harvest energy. Different configurations of triboelectric nanogenerators offer various functionalities and promising application scenarios. This study introduces a four-electrode droplet triboelectric nanogenerator (FED-TENG). Different connection formats among the four electrodes result in multimodal outputs, enhancing adaptability across diverse applications. The selective generation of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) output enables efficient, direct driving of DC or AC loads. The device also offers dual outputs distributed evenly or unevenly in power. Evenly distributed dual output accommodates simultaneous power supply to multiple similar loads, while unevenly distributed dual output is recommended for independent sensor applications. Additionally, the charge-transfer process in FED-TENG is dissected to elucidate the mechanism underlying different output modes. Anticipated findings from investigating FED-TENG hold promise for developing adaptable and versatile water-TENGs applicable to droplet energy-harvesting and sensor technologies.

Abstract:Herein, a comprehensive overview of the emerging droplet‐based electricity generators that convert energy from the ubiquitously existing water droplets is provided. The recent research progress and evolution of droplet‐based electricity generators, the optimization and hybridization method to maximize the energy harvesting efficiency, and future opportunities and perspectives for the practical application of droplet‐based electricity generators in actual situations are summarized. Electricity is the basic and essential need for every single person and guarantees the development of society, industry, and the economy. The limited conventional fossil fuel meets the challenge of the sharply increasing demand, while may lead to severe pollution. Emerging green energy harvesting systems can convert ambient kinetic, thermal, and solar energy to electricity effectivity. In this review paper, the authors provide an overview of the new and emerging methods, droplet‐based electricity generators, that convert energy from the ubiquitously existing water droplets. The authors begin with a brief introduction of the working principle for droplet‐based power generators. Existing configurations of the droplet‐based power generator are also summarized, including 1) single electrode, 2) transistor‐based, and 3) direct current generator. Then, a detailed discussion of the design and operation factors that may impact the energy harvesting efficiency of droplet‐based power generators is provided. Hybrid energy harvester that integrates droplet‐based power generators with other triboelectric, pyroelectric, and photovoltaic‐based devices are summarized. Finally, challenges and perspectives regarding the future development of droplet‐based power generators are described. The reviews demonstrate a highly efficient method for energy harvesting from water droplets to meet the vital needs of the energy crisis.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on water droplets can harvest water kinetic energy using triboelectrification and electrostatic induction mechanisms. However, the development of traditional liquid-solid TENGs (L-S TENGs) is severely limited due to their low-performance output and high device encapsulation requirements for preparation technology. In this work, a single-electrode mode droplet-based TENG (D-TENG) is devised to effectively harvest water kinetic energy by optimizing the interface contact behavior of droplets, increasing the short-circuit current (ISC) of one drop of water from microamperes to milliamperes levels. In the D-TENG configuration, the electrode is positioned above the dielectric rather than at the bottom, allowing efficient utilization of generated friction charges and reducing the dissipation of these charges, thereby enhancing the output performance of the TENG. The influencing factors and operational mechanisms of D-TENG are studied to obtain optimized working conditions to improve its output performance. Under optimal conditions, the D-TENG can saturate the charge of the PTFE surface with only 8 droplets, achieving an ISC of up to 3.51 mA and an output voltage (VO) of 298.27 V. This work provides a convenient method for efficiently harvesting water kinetic energy based on interfacial behavior control. A single-electrode mode droplet-based triboelectric nanogenerator (D-TENG) is devised through direct contact between the electrode and water, which can obtain a short-circuit current greater than 3 mA without prolonged charge accumulation. Abstract:The electricity generation is regulated by the interaction between the water droplets and the electrode configuration rather than originating from just interfacial contact electrification. The electrode of TENGs has an important effect on the generation and transfer of charge. In this paper, a new charge transfer mechanism is proposed using the potential difference on both sides of the electrode edge . Droplet‐based triboelectric nanogenerators (D‐TENGs) have recently gained much attention due to their great potential in harvesting energy. However, the output performance of conventional single‐electrode droplet‐based TENGs is limited owing to low induced electrification efficiency. The asymmetric distribution of electric fields on both sides of the electrode edge enhances the electrostatic induction process and improves the output performance of D‐TENG. Herein, an induced electrification‐enhanced droplet‐based triboelectric nanogenerator (IED‐TENG) is developed to effectively enhance the output performance by simultaneously optimizing the electrode structure and the dynamics of the water droplet. One droplet falling from a height of 30 cm results in a −70 V output voltage and −6 μA short‐circuit current, which is 70 times and 20 times the full‐inductive‐electrode mode, respectively. The working principle and the relationship between electric signal and droplet dynamics are analyzed in detail. Moreover, the peak output voltage can reach −110 V, and the peak current can get −140 μA by using the power generation of multiple water droplets. The present protocol provides an easy and reproducibility strategy in energy harvesting and sensing areas.

Abstract:The microfluidic system provides a novel method for simultaneously carrying out microfluidic manipulation, detection and analyzation in a tiny chip with designed microchannels, which has the advantage of simple structure and low sample consumption and has been widely studied in past decades. However, the normal operation of the microfluidic system could not be separated from the role of ancillary equipment which is often bulky, high-cost, and needs an external power supply. To improve the portability and simplify the structure of microfluidic systems, different types of nanogenerators (NGs) with advantages of small dimensions, simple structure, low cost and eco-friendly were integrated with microfluidic chips, and various self-powered microfluidic systems with distinctive functions have been developed. In this review, the recent research progress of NG-based self-powered microfluidic systems was summarized and discussed from two aspects: triboelectric generator (TENG) based self-powered microfluidic manipulation system and NG based self-powered microfluidic sensing system. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and future optimizing direction of NG-based self-powered microfluidic systems were also elaborated.

Abstract:Droplet-based triboelectric nanogenerator (D-TENG) using liquid -solid contact electrification has been widely studied for harvesting raindrop energy and ocean energy due to its unique ability to effectively reduce friction between solids and improve durability. In 2020, a new-generation D-TENG with a “transistor-like” structure was proposed, which first achieved ultra-high instantaneous power output(50 W/m <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> ). Subsequently, D-TENG has been rapidly developed and is widely used in ocean wave energy power generation and liquid-solid triboelectric power generation. Currently, although we have excellent D-TENGs to harvest energy from a single water droplet, but if multiple D-TENGs are simply connected in parallel for a large area usage, the output power of the whole power generation module will drop significantly due to the mutual influence between different individual generation units, which severely limits their applications in practice. Therefore, finding a reasonable topology to relieve the inherent constraints of D-TENGs is of great significance for realizing the large-scale raindrop energy harvesting.
