Abstract:Abstract Regional suburbanization processes are transforming rural America socially and physically, threatening the uniqueness of small towns whose diversity is a national resource. This article reviews existing holistic descriptions of American rural communities since post‐World War II by rural sociologists and anthropologists. Three new community case studies are briefly sketched—one “agrarian” in slow decline, another “postagrarian” where suburbanization is overwhelming agrarian traits, and a third that combines elements of both. With suburbanization, transformation into a generic nontown with the loss of place attachment and community identity is argued to have particularly negative effects for youth, whose socialization becomes privatized as parental civic engagement and general adult watchfulness decline. These changes constitute a community effect for rural youth analogous to the neighborhood effect richly documented by urban sociologists for inner‐city youth. The suburbanization challenge is for small towns to resist homogenization of the vital aspects of agrarian community life they most cherish.

Abstract:The majority of Americans now live in suburbs, and a number of scholars have highlighted how various pop culture objects, from novels to television shows, have either reflected or encouraged suburban life. An analysis of the top 30 Nielsen-rated television shows from 1950 to 2007, a period of both rapid suburbanization and television growth, reveals that suburban TV shows did not dominate popular television. There is slightly more evidence for reflection theory with more sets of seasons with higher numbers of suburban-set shows following decades of rapid suburban growth. Additionally, the number of suburban-set shows was also influenced by the popularity of the genres of sitcoms and dramas. These findings suggest a need for further research into why relatively few popular shows were set in suburbs compared to big cities and how viewing settings on television directly influences suburban aspirations and behavior.

Abstract:Suburban residential development is one of the most prevailing urban phenomena in Chinese cities, where it occurs in a very different context from the West. However, research has seldom assessed suburban residential development in blocks, especially based on parcel-level land use data and site-specific land leasing data. This paper attempted to address this critical gap through analyzing residential land development of a case city, Hangzhou, in the era of land market reform since 2000. The major spatial determinants of development were identified through Logit models on the scales of timing, density, and intensity. The results indicated that Hangzhou has formed a fragmented and dispersed pattern in the suburbs, characterized by large-scale development and a relatively low floor area ratio. It was found that travel time to the central business district, distance to urban arteries, distance to schools and colleges, distance to the Qiantang River, percentage of industrial land and residential land, and surrounding land transactions impacted suburban residential development. These variables had different impacts on the timing, density, and intensity of suburban residential development. In particular, residential development was encouraged in suburbs despite the lack of adequate public facilities. The results call for policy and planning that can better manage suburban residential development in Hangzhou. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationships between neighbourhood change and spatial transformation in the North Carolina Piedmont region between 1980 and 2010. The dominant patterns of neighbourhood change, on the one hand, conform to some classical models of metropolitan structure, and, on the other hand, provide new insights on what has been ignored by those models. Trajectories of neighbourhood change reflect both persistent segregation and increasing diversification. A detailed analysis of trajectories of neighbourhood change points to interesting patterns in both central-city and suburban ecological succession and transformation.

Abstract:Using k-means cluster analysis and discriminant analysis, this study systematically examines the trajectories of neighborhood change at the census tract level between 1990 and 2010 for all metropolitan and micropolitan areas of the United States. Seven types of neighborhoods are identified using a visualization technique of clustergram and other statistical tests. A sequence of neighborhood change has been identified. This research reveals the primarily stable nature of neighborhoods and the polarization of inequality in neighborhoods. Understanding changes that are not within the category of either downgrading or upgrading is very important for policy makers and practitioners in providing appropriate local services, support, or opportunities for the residents.

Abstract:This paper examines the spatial dynamics of suburban crime. Four hypotheses are developed postulating a decreasing central city-suburb disparity in crime rates, persistence in the relative crime rates of individual suburbs, a growing heterogeneity in the levels of crime faced by individual suburbs, and an increasing regionalization of suburban crime. The hypotheses are tested through a case study of the Chicago metropolitan area. Property and violent crime rates are studied separately, and the time frame is 1972 to 1981. Central city and suburban crime rates are found to be converging in Chicago and the United States as a whole. Persistence in the relative crime rates of individual Chicago suburbs is significant but weak. Socioeconomic status dominates the process of change in the relative safety of suburbs-not suburban age, as anticipated. Low status suburbs tend to have high-crime rates, and their relative security is worsening over time; the opposite is true of high-status jurisdictions. This process of consolidated advantage is also occurring in a spatial sense; over time, suburban regions with initially safe environments appear able to reinforce their early advantage.

Abstract:Since the 1990s, Atlanta’s inner suburbs have experienced rising rates of poverty alongside growing racial/ethnic diversity. Meanwhile, on the built landscape, high-end (re)development projects incorporating New Urbanist features such as pedestrian accessibility, compact densities, and mixed land uses have become increasingly common. Although practitioners suggest that these developments promote social inclusivity and enhanced “livability,” individual cases suggest that some New Urbanist projects may be gentrifying underserved communities of color. This paper tests the extent of this concern by examining Atlanta's inner-suburban geographies of New Urbanism using a logit model. Results indicate that neighborhoods with older housing stock, more renters, lower incomes, lower rents relative to home prices, and higher Latino populations in close proximity to inner-suburban downtowns are most likely to be targeted for New Urbanist (re)development. Thus, despite the optimistic language, New Urbanism in this region appears to be serving as the inner-suburban face of gentrification.

Abstract:Set against the wider background of global suburbanization, this paper contributes to the emerging literature on the formation of technoburbia in China, and more importantly, the potential "urban contradictions" accompanying this process. Through a bottom-up empirical exploration of the Future Sci-tech City Corridor in Hangzhou and its embedded Featured Town initiative in particular, we observe how the future of technoburbia in China is by no means free from similar challenges in housing affordability and labor stratification. However, these contradictions are managed entirely differently in China. Nevertheless, the highly planned nature of China's technoburbia also rubs up against political decentralization, demographic change and economic upgrading, implying significant trials and tribulations along the way.
Suburban Industrial Land Development in Transitional China: Spatial Restructuring and Determinants

Abstract:Along with rapid urbanization, suburban manufacturing development is one of the most prevalent phenomena in contemporary cities around the developing world. However, there are limited quantitative studies on the restructuring of intra-urban manufacturing landscape in the context of developing countries. Based on the theoretical perceptions of neoliberalism and the debate between neoliberal theory and dirigisme theory, this study develops an interpretive framework of industrial land development combining state force and market force under transitional economies. This context-specific framework is used in a case study to investigate the determinants of industrial suburbanization in Hangzhou, China, and thus to disclose the definite roles played by local governments and market forces. The historical analysis indicates that the manufacturing spatial restructure is characterized by a big decline of industrial land in central city, as well as emerging industrial clusters in suburban areas. We also find that both governmental policies and marketization have significantly shaped the restructuring of manufacturing landscape. Proactive planning policies, development zone fevers, and controlled land prices are the most important policies influencing manufacturing locational decision.

Abstract:Life space,asthe projection of urban residents' activities in the dimension of space,is always changing.Numbers of suburban communities have emerged since suburbanization started in Beijing,among which there are many large ones that attract lots of attention of scholars.Compared with before,the life space of the residents in these large communities has changed dramatically.This paper divides life space into four kinds,including residential space,working one,shopping one and entertainment.Based on questionnaires and interviews of the residents in Huilongguan,a typical large community in the suburb of Beijing,the authors focus on the differences of life space between the present and ten years ago.This investigation uses the methods of quantitative analysis and qualitative one,and the perspectives of macro and micro,to study residents' daily lives.Considering that the previous studies mainly concentrate on one kind of life space,the innovation of this study is to analyze all the four kinds of life space as a whole and pay attention to a special group,i.e.suburbanites.The result shows that in recent ten years,this kind of large community plays an important role in the formation of residential suburbanization and the decentralization of leisure and shopping space.Suburbanites have the strong ability to bear the challenge of the long-distance commuting between their houses and working places.In the end of the discussion,the mechanism is discussed and suggestions to urban planning are made.When constructing a large suburb community,we should take full account of its connection with the city working clusters and public transport sites.
Economic Restructuring and Suburbanization in China

Abstract:As in other countries, suburbanization in China occurred after the cities had experienced a period of sustained industrial and population growth. This study examines suburbanization in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Dalian. As a result of economic restructuring, the urban core registered net population loss from 1982 to 1990 because of decentralization while the inner suburbs gained population. Among the forces driving suburbanization were marketization of urban land, the shift of industrial land to tertiary use, transportation improvement, the availability of foreign and domestic capital, housing rehabilitation in the city, and new housing construction in the suburbs. There were certain similarities but major differences between American and Chinese suburbanization. Unlike the current metropolitan landscape in the United States where suburban growth has given rise to a polycentric spatial structure, suburbanization in China is still at the incipient stage of development with suburbs dominated by central cities. The role of the state in China has been more direct and powerful in setting the suburbanization process in motion.

Abstract:Journal of Planning Education and Research, Ahead of Print. The Washington Metropolitan area has been growing rapidly and experiencing gentrification since the 1980s. Contemporaneously, a light rail corridor in the inner suburbs was planned and is currently being constructed. This light rail, Maryland's Purple Line, travels through dense urban areas, post-war era suburbs, and through a series of dense low-income immigrant gateway neighborhoods. Through a case study of the Purple Line during the construction phase, this paper examines the costs and benefits of the modern paradigm of transit-oriented development. Qualitative evidence suggests that the benefits of the line may be imbalanced against its costs in the short run, especially with respect to housing stability and affordability, displacement, and neighborhood change. Furthermore, this paper argues that displacement due to transit investment can occur prior to the opening of new transit lines. In light of this, the tenuous political coalitions that support construction of light rail will have to adjust to be more inclusive of equity, vulnerable populations, and provision of affordable housing.

Abstract:Suburbanization is one of the most important features of modern metropolian areas.Over the last several decades,global cities are facing remarkable decentralization of population and employment from central cities towards outer suburbs,which has significant influence on urban spatial restructuring.In the 1990s,the conception of "New Suburbanization" was put forward,which established the relationship between suburbanization and the development of the edge cities and urban polycentric spatial structure of employment.In recent years,with the outward expansion and growing economic and social complexity of suburbs,suburbanization is recognized and accepted by more and more people.Since the 21st century,social space has become the hottest topic in the west.The complexity of the social structure and suburban social space has caused more and more attention along with the rapid development of the suburbs.Urban socio-spatial structure in the suburbs has been analyzed,concerning about the transition of the residential circumstance and social relationship in the suburbs.Base on the newest researches on suburbanization in the western countries recently,the author summarizes the achievement of western suburbanization research from the prospective of social space,covering several fields such as the restructuration of the residential space,the housing option and residential differentiation,the commuting behavior and the social influences of suburbanization and so on.Then the author submits the inspiration for the suburbanization study in China by analyzing the transition of the western researches and the innovation of the research methods.Finally,the author puts forward new orientations on prospect of the future suburbanization study in China from four aspects.

Abstract:While the first part of this two‐part essay portrayed the bleakness of the suburban public realm in the USA, the debate over how physical planning can contribute to making it more vibrant is the subject of this second part. Eurourbanism, or the practice of looking to European cities for a design paradigm, has been criticized on the grounds that the USA has its own distinct public realm which is either non‐spatial in character or is located in ‘non‐traditional’ public spaces, such as shopping malls, in contrast with the more ‘traditional’ European sites such as streets and squares. But there are questions about whether the distinctive ‘American public realm’ is as democratic, or can offer the diversity of experience of the ‘traditional’ public realm. A more recent addition to the debate has been ‘new urbanism’ or ‘neotraditionalism’, whose proponents have put forth a set of planning guidelines for suburbia by drawing on design principles embodied in the traditional American small town. The essay critically evaluates these guidelines by examining their application in two neotraditional developments and proposes a research agenda to move the debate ahead.
Residential Suburbanization and the Differentiation of Home?work Link between Social Groups——A Case Study of Tian?Tong?Yuan in Beijing

Abstract:Since the late 1990s, Chinese large cities have experienced rapid suburbanization. Accordingly, the suburban residential areas have gradually transformed into areas with high degree of social class mix, residential mobility,as well as the diversity of daily life style. Through a case study of Tiantongyuan community in Beijing, aided by GIS visualization technology, we describe and analyze the differentiation of home-work link between social groups. After that, multiple regression models are used to reveal the impact of housing marketization and housing policy changes on the home-work relationship of suburban residents, such as the implications of residential movement period, housing source, job opportunities, residential and employment adjustment etc. Finally,this study shows that under the combined effects of residential suburbanization and suburb urbanization, the home-work relationship of migrant population is more influenced by market force while the home-work relationship of local resident is influenced by both the marketization and housing policy, and the policy factors have a great impact.
Gentrification and the suburbanization of poverty: evidence from a highly regulated housing system

Abstract:There is growing evidence of a suburbanization of poverty in the context of accelerating gentrification, particularly in liberal housing systems. To what extent are similar processes occurring in highly regulated housing systems that undergo gentrification? To scrutinize this, we use a novel dataset covering all 997,497 residential relocations differentiated by household income and household type in the period between 2011 and 2018 for the case of Vienna, Austria. Drawing on GIS mapping and descriptive statistics, we find limited evidence of a systematic relocation of low-income households from gentrifying central areas or even to the suburbs, yet significantly higher mobility rates among this group. We argue, based on policy analysis and multivariate statistics, that this is a product of Vienna's tenure segmented housing system. While the gentrifying private rental sector in the urban core is characterized by high levels of precarity, regularly pushing low-income residents to move house, entry barriers to other market segments "trap" many of them in this sector under insecure conditions. Our results raise broader questions about the context in the debate around gentrification and suburbanizing poverty and call for greater attention to detrimental impacts of gentrification on housing and life course trajectories of low-income residents without pronounced spatial displacement.

Abstract:This article argues for more research on neighborhoods. Concern about neighborhood change, especially gentrification, has mounted in cities throughout the world. Not‐in‐My‐Backyard versus Yes‐in‐My‐Backyard (YIMBY) battles over local housing proposals have intensified. Meanwhile, people around the world are spending more time in their neighborhoods than they did previously, due to greater flexibility to work from home. But despite the increased public focus on neighborhoods, I argue that real estate economists are not paying enough attention. Although many have produced excellent, even pathbreaking, work on the trajectories of neighborhoods and their importance in shaping life outcomes, many real estate scholars focus on cities or metros as the unit of analysis, ignoring within‐city variation, and those who look within cities often treat neighborhoods as fixed effects to absorb unobserved variation, without giving much thought to what it is that is happening inside that black box of neighborhoods. I argue that neighborhoods are more interesting and puzzling than ever, they are more significant to our lives, and new data enhance our ability to analyze them. Specifically, I lay out seven key reasons to study neighborhoods and to study them now.

Abstract:A large literature explicitly investigates how urban regions are governed. Immigration policies, housing, infrastructure, transportation and development processes contribute to the process of governance. However,much less attention has been paid to the question of suburban governance; speciifcally the constellation of public and private processes, actors and institutions that determine and shape the planning, design, politics and economics of suburban spaces and everyday behaviour. At the same time, any survey of the existing literature would reveal that it is exceedingly difficult to pin down exactly what suburban governancemeans and how it is practiced. The array of descriptors across different geographical and linguistic areasmakes the task of ascertaining similar and differentmodes of suburban governance dififcult yet still a necessary project. Given the worldwide spread of the phenomenon of peripheral urbanization, this task has to be taken on at the scale of global comparative research. Thus, our aim in this article is to develop a framework, and argument that accounts for the universalization of suburbanization, whilemaintaining a focus on the particularmanifestations of this global process. It is true that different descriptors of suburban life signify particular forms of decentralized urban space. Yet behind all of these forms of suburbs are the processes of urbanization and suburbanization that signify ourmove towards a completely urbanized global society.

Abstract:The demise of neighbourhood-scale community has been lamented for decades. Tight-knit neighboring has indeed declined. However, its significance is colored by nostalgia. In cities and suburbs, the loosening of neighborhoods has encouraged residents and agents to create imaginary local communities, partly by fashioning local traditions. In changed form, community persists. Underlying it, for those able to choose, are individualistic calculations. With increasing homeownership more people have a financial stake in place, the investment aspects becoming prominent since the 1980s. Because most children attend local schools, the growing importance of education has made them a major factor in neighborhood choice, with financial implications. In counterpoint, lower-income households with little choice are constrained to neighborhoods where the disadvantages of crime, poor mobility, and indifferent schools are exacerbated by growing wealth inequality. The concept and reality of neighborhoods have never been more important, in urban studies and in urban life.
