Suburban Governance in Global Perspective

Abstract:A large literature explicitly investigates how urban regions are governed. Immigration policies, housing, infrastructure, transportation and development processes contribute to the process of governance. However,much less attention has been paid to the question of suburban governance; speciifcally the constellation of public and private processes, actors and institutions that determine and shape the planning, design, politics and economics of suburban spaces and everyday behaviour. At the same time, any survey of the existing literature would reveal that it is exceedingly difficult to pin down exactly what suburban governancemeans and how it is practiced. The array of descriptors across different geographical and linguistic areasmakes the task of ascertaining similar and differentmodes of suburban governance dififcult yet still a necessary project. Given the worldwide spread of the phenomenon of peripheral urbanization, this task has to be taken on at the scale of global comparative research. Thus, our aim in this article is to develop a framework, and argument that accounts for the universalization of suburbanization, whilemaintaining a focus on the particularmanifestations of this global process. It is true that different descriptors of suburban life signify particular forms of decentralized urban space. Yet behind all of these forms of suburbs are the processes of urbanization and suburbanization that signify ourmove towards a completely urbanized global society.
