Abstract:The current hype about artificial intelligence makes a sober assessment of the state of the technology and its likely societal impacts difficult. AI researchers, start-ups, investors and the media all have their own incentives to keep the hype going. China and the US compete for pole position in AI research and development, and the EU and most economically advanced countries vie for the remaining top spots. The mighty multinational corporations of the digital economy rival for both new and established researchers and engineers. Where I live, in Montreal, Facebook, Alphabet (Google Brain and Deep Mind), Microsoft and Samsung all lured top scientists into their newly opened labs, and both the provincial and federal governments invested massively to maintain the Canadian edge in AI. If this weren't enough, some of the best fiction of recent years—Ex Machina, Her, Westworld, Ian McEwan's recent Machines Like Me—all hijack our power of imagination so that we keep picturing ourselves...

Abstract:Artificial intelligence has witnessed exponential growth in the past decade. Advances in computing power and the design of sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms have enabled computers to outperform humans in a variety of tasks. Yet, artificial intelligence's path has never been smooth, having essentially fallen apart twice in its lifetime after periods of popular success. We provide a brief rundown of artificial intelligence's evolution, highlighting its crucial moments and major turning points from inception to the present. In doing so, we attempt to learn, anticipate the future, and discuss what steps may be taken to prevent another winter.

Abstract:Abstract This paper reflects my address as IAAIL president at ICAIL 2021. It is aimed to give my vision of the status of the AI and Law discipline, and possible future perspectives. In this respect, I go through different seasons of AI research (of AI and Law in particular): from the Winter of AI, namely a period of mistrust in AI (throughout the eighties until early nineties), to the Summer of AI, namely the current period of great interest in the discipline with lots of expectations. One of the results of the first decades of AI research is that “intelligence requires knowledge”. Since its inception the Web proved to be an extraordinary vehicle for knowledge creation and sharing, therefore it’s not a surprise if the evolution of AI has followed the evolution of the Web. I argue that a bottom-up approach, in terms of machine/deep learning and NLP to extract knowledge from raw data, combined with a top-down approach, in terms of legal knowledge representation and models for legal reasoning and argumentation, may represent a promotion for the development of the Semantic Web, as well as of AI systems. Finally, I provide my insight in the potential of AI development, which takes into account technological opportunities and theoretical limits.

Abstract:While artificial intelligence has the potential to process vast amounts of data, generate new insights, and unlock greater productivity, its widespread adoption may entail unforeseen consequences. We identify conditions under which AI, by reducing the cost of access to certain modes of knowledge, can paradoxically harm public understanding. While large language models are trained on vast amounts of diverse data, they naturally generate output towards the 'center' of the distribution. This is generally useful, but widespread reliance on recursive AI systems could lead to a process we define as "knowledge collapse", and argue this could harm innovation and the richness of human understanding and culture. However, unlike AI models that cannot choose what data they are trained on, humans may strategically seek out diverse forms of knowledge if they perceive them to be worthwhile. To investigate this, we provide a simple model in which a community of learners or innovators choose to use traditional methods or to rely on a discounted AI-assisted process and identify conditions under which knowledge collapse occurs. In our default model, a 20% discount on AI-generated content generates public beliefs 2.3 times further from the truth than when there is no discount. An empirical approach to measuring the distribution of LLM outputs is provided in theoretical terms and illustrated through a specific example comparing the diversity of outputs across different models and prompting styles. Finally, based on the results, we consider further research directions to counteract such outcomes.

Abstract:Recent developments in AI have brought broader attention to tensions between two overlapping communities, "AI Ethics" and "AI Safety." In this article we (i) characterize this false binary, (ii) argue that a simple binary is not an accurate model of AI discourse, and (iii) provide concrete suggestions for how individuals can help avoid the emergence of us-vs-them conflict in the broad community of people working on AI development and governance. While we focus on "AI Ethics" an "AI Safety," the general lessons apply to related tensions, including those between accelerationist ("e/acc") and cautious stances on AI development.

The 30-Year Cycle In The AI Debate

Abstract:In the last couple of years, the rise of Artificial Intelligence and the successes of academic breakthroughs in the field have been inescapable. Vast sums of money have been thrown at AI start-ups. Many existing tech companies -- including the giants like Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft -- have opened new research labs. The rapid changes in these everyday work and entertainment tools have fueled a rising interest in the underlying technology itself; journalists write about AI tirelessly, and companies -- of tech nature or not -- brand themselves with AI, Machine Learning or Deep Learning whenever they get a chance. Confronting squarely this media coverage, several analysts are starting to voice concerns about over-interpretation of AI's blazing successes and the sometimes poor public reporting on the topic. This paper reviews briefly the track-record in AI and Machine Learning and finds this pattern of early dramatic successes, followed by philosophical critique and unexpected difficulties, if not downright stagnation, returning almost to the clock in 30-year cycles since 1958.

Abstract:The polarization of the debate about artificial intelligence (AI) pulls in two mutually exclusive directions of either complete takeover of future jobs by omnipotent algorithms or an absolute bliss with robots at work while humans reap the benefits of endless vacation. Add this to conflicting views of work as either a disutility to be minimized or as an essential component in human flourishing, and it is no wonder a wide range of views are expressed on AI and human flourishing. The literature, from Smith to Keynes and beyond, offers some initial methodological guidance. Still, the true social and economic implications of an AI‐type environment in production and labor markets are yet to be fully understood. This article argues that neither of the predictions are realistic. Instead, the global economy may be passing, albeit at a faster speed, through a phase of technological change, similar to those experienced before. While a nuanced balance is emerging, with an emphasis on human skills in future employment, the benefits may not be equitably distributed, as equality of opportunities for human development may not be reachable, though visible, in the AI‐driven society. Hence, as firms seek efficiency gains, much weight is shifted onto governments and quasi‐private entities in maintaining decent living standards conducive to human flourishing in unprecedented times of the COVID‐19 pandemic. The article reviews various popular concerns and advances new public policy measures aimed at tackling some of the immediate fears of automation.

Abstract:We provide a birds eye view of the rapid developments in AI and Deep Learning that has led to the path-breaking emergence of AI in Large Language Models. The aim of this study is to place all these developments in a pragmatic broader historical social perspective without any exaggerations while at the same time without any pessimism that created the AI winter in the 1970s to 1990s. We also at the same time point out toxicity, bias, memorization, sycophancy, logical inconsistencies, hallucinations that exist just as a warning to the overly optimistic. We note here that just as this emergence of AI seems to occur at a threshold point in the number of neural connections or weights, it has also been observed that human brain and especially the cortex region is nothing special or extraordinary but simply a case of scaled-up version of the primate brain and that even the human intelligence seems like an emergent phenomena of scale.

Public Computing Intellectuals in the Age of AI Crisis

Abstract:The belief that AI technology is on the cusp of causing a generalized social crisis became a popular one in 2023. While there was no doubt an element of hype and exaggeration to some of these accounts, they do reflect the fact that there are troubling ramifications to this technology stack. This conjunction of shared concerns about social, political, and personal futures presaged by current developments in artificial intelligence presents the academic discipline of computing with a renewed opportunity for self-examination and reconfiguration. This position paper endeavors to do so in four sections. The first explores what is at stake for computing in the narrative of an AI crisis. The second articulates possible educational responses to this crisis and advocates for a broader analytic focus on power relations. The third section presents a novel characterization of academic computing's field of practice, one which includes not only the discipline's usual instrumental forms of practice but reflexive practice as well. This reflexive dimension integrates both the critical and public functions of the discipline as equal intellectual partners and a necessary component of any contemporary academic field. The final section will advocate for a conceptual archetype--the Public Computer Intellectual and its less conspicuous but still essential cousin, the (Almost) Public Computer Intellectual--as a way of practically imagining the expanded possibilities of academic practice in our discipline, one that provides both self-critique and an outward-facing orientation towards the public good. It will argue that the computer education research community can play a vital role in this regard. Recommendations for pedagogical change within computing to develop more reflexive capabilities are also provided.

Abstract:After the release of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a revolutionary technology capable of transforming many industries in the economy. Interestingly, AI expectations have not only impacted the real economy but also the digital economy represented by AI-related crypto tokens. In this context, we assessed whether the AI effect on the cryptocurrency market is merely a transient trend. To do so, we applied different empirical techniques to AI-related crypto sectors, including the PSY real-time bubble detection method, wavelet coherence analysis, Pearson correlations, and the minimum spanning tree approach. Our findings show that indeed, the AI impact on cryptocurrencies was short-lived, as we just identified a short bubble period in January-March 2023. Moreover, AI-related tokens were briefly driven by investor attention focused on crypto projects, while we did not identify any significant correlation with the increasing broader attention on AI. This could imply that investors hold different expectations for AI in various industries, and they tend to be more pessimistic about digital economy and cryptocurrencies, given the negative performance and decreasing social attention after the bubble period. These results hold relevance for both investors and the scientific community. Investors should exercise caution when considering future investments in AI-related tokens, and researchers should acknowledge that AI may not deeply impact all industries but rather only select ones.

Paul Scharre's latest book, "Four Battlegrounds," uncovers key aspects of this technology, and the literal four battlegrounds this contest is being fought on – data, talent, compute, and institutions. This book review assesses a wide range of issues the book covers through a unique story-telling writing style, and highlights implications for how we understand AI and its uses. The book isn't entirely jargon-free, but this review argues that Scharre does a great job at bringing down the walls of incomprehensibility with regards to this key technology.

Abstract:The arrival of deep learning techniques able to infer patterns from large datasets has dramatically improved the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. Deep learning's rapid development and adoption, in great part led by large technology companies, has however created concerns about a premature narrowing in the technological trajectory of AI research despite its weaknesses, which include lack of robustness, high environmental costs, and potentially unfair outcomes. We seek to improve the evidence base with a semantic analysis of AI research in arXiv, a popular pre-prints database. We study the evolution of the thematic diversity of AI research, compare the thematic diversity of AI research in academia and the private sector and measure the influence of private companies in AI research through the citations they receive and their collaborations with other institutions. Our results suggest that diversity in AI research has stagnated in recent years, and that AI research involving the private sector tends to be less diverse and more influential than research in academia. We also find that private sector AI researchers tend to specialise in data-hungry and computationally intensive deep learning methods at the expense of research involving other AI methods, research that considers the societal and ethical implications of AI, and applications in sectors like health. Our results provide a rationale for policy action to prevent a premature narrowing of AI research that could constrain its societal benefits, but we note the informational, incentive and scale hurdles standing in the way of such interventions.

While prevailing literature often skims the surface, there's a burgeoning sentiment celebrating the human-AI synergy, often overlooking its potential to accentuate educational disparities. This research delves deeper, uncovering the intricate nexus between AI-driven education and human capital markets. The findings suggest that AI, while promising, might inadvertently perpetuate the same crises across different demographics, amplifying existing inequalities. The strong may become stronger, while the vulnerable risk further marginalization, primarily due to disparities in resource allocation. To mitigate these challenges, this paper proposes three actionable recommendations. Furthermore, recognizing the global implications of this issue, the study advocates for international collaboration to ensure equitable access to AI-related educational resources, championing the cause of educational fairness worldwide.

Abstract:In this era of interdisciplinary science, many scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence (AI), have brought dramatic revolutions to human society. The increasing availability of digital data on scholarly outputs offers unprecedented opportunities to explore science of science (SciSci). Despite many significant works have been done on SciSci, substantial disciplinary differences in different domains make some insights inadequate within particular fields. One thing standing out is that knowledge concerning the science behind AI is sorely lacking. In this work, we study the evolution of AI from three dimensions, including the evolution of trend, mobility, and collaboration. We find that the AI research hotspots have shifted from theory to application. The USA, which has the largest number of distinguished AI scientists, appeals most to the global AI talents. The brain drain problem of AI scientists is increasingly serious in developing countries. The ties among the AI elites are highly clustered in the collaboration network. Overall, our work aims to serve as a starter and support the development of AI exploring in a visionary way. Abstract:Scientists are enthusiastically imagining ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) tools might improve research. Why are AI tools so attractive and what are the risks of implementing them across the research pipeline? Here we develop a taxonomy of scientists' visions for AI, observing that their appeal comes from promises to improve productivity and objectivity by overcoming human shortcomings. But proposed AI solutions can also exploit our cognitive limitations, making us vulnerable to illusions of understanding in which we believe we understand more about the world than we actually do. Such illusions obscure the scientific community's ability to see the formation of scientific monocultures, in which some types of methods, questions and viewpoints come to dominate alternative approaches, making science less innovative and more vulnerable to errors. The proliferation of AI tools in science risks introducing a phase of scientific enquiry in which we produce more but understand less. By analysing the appeal of these tools, we provide a framework for advancing discussions of responsible knowledge production in the age of AI.

Data Science at the Singularity

Abstract:A purported `AI Singularity' has been in the public eye recently. Mass media and US national political attention focused on `AI Doom' narratives hawked by social media influencers. The European Commission is announcing initiatives to forestall `AI Extinction'. In my opinion, `AI Singularity' is the wrong narrative for what's happening now; recent happenings signal something else entirely. Something fundamental to computation-based research really changed in the last ten years. In certain fields, progress is dramatically more rapid than previously, as the fields undergo a transition to frictionless reproducibility (FR). This transition markedly changes the rate of spread of ideas and practices, affects mindsets, and erases memories of much that came before. The emergence of frictionless reproducibility follows from the maturation of 3 data science principles in the last decade. Those principles involve data sharing, code sharing, and competitive challenges, however implemented in the particularly strong form of frictionless open services. Empirical Machine Learning (EML) is todays leading adherent field, and its consequent rapid changes are responsible for the AI progress we see. Still, other fields can and do benefit when they adhere to the same principles. Many rapid changes from this maturation are misidentified. The advent of FR in EML generates a steady flow of innovations; this flow stimulates outsider intuitions that there's an emergent superpower somewhere in AI. This opens the way for PR to push worrying narratives: not only `AI Extinction', but also the supposed monopoly of big tech on AI research. The helpful narrative observes that the superpower of EML is adherence to frictionless reproducibility practices; these practices are responsible for the striking progress in AI that we see everywhere.
