Abstract:The objective of the study was to determine effects of environment, sex, breed and season on some serum enzyme characterization of pastoral indigenous zebu cattle in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The animals were restrained in the morning and from each 10mls of blood was collected through jugular vein using a 10mls syringe and were discounted into plain Bijou bottle and allowed to clot at room temperature for 3 hours for serum formation. Clotted blood was subjected to centrifugation at 2500 rpm for 10 minutes to separate serum and the nonhaemolyzed sera was stored at -20 °C until biochemical analysis. Serum enzymes such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatine kinase (CK), gamma – glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined by ELISA (Enzyme Link Immunosorbent Assay) Kit. The results show no significant (P > 0.05) variations in AST values but there were significant (P < 0.05) differences in the mean ALT, ALP, CK, GGT and LDH at the three study locations. There were significant (P < 0.05) differences in the mean AST, ALT, ALP, CK and GGT but there were no significant (P > 0.05) variations in LDH of male and female cattle. The results also show insignificant (P > 0.05) disparities on the mean AST and LDH values but there were no significant (P > 0.05) variations in ALT, ALP, CK and GGT of all the cattle breeds from the three study locations. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in the mean AST, ALT, ALP, CK, GGT but there were insignificant (P > 0.05) discrepancies in the mean LDH of cattle on system of management basis at the three study locations. There were no seasonal significant (P > 0.05) differences in the mean AST, ALT, CK, GGT but the results show insignificant (P > 0.05) distinctions in the mean ALP and LDH of all the cattle during the four seasons of the year at the three study locations. However, the results obtained in this study were within the referenced values. Therefore, these variations could be associated with feeding, age differences, health, physiological status of the animals, seasonality in nutrient availability and environmental conditions where the cattle are produced.
