Abstract:The study assessed the adaptive ability of two Indian goat breeds, Barbari ( n = 10) and Sirohi ( n = 10), to different seasons in their natural habitat. Hematological, physiological, biochemical and electrolyte variations were compared across winter and summer. Physiological responses such as respiration rate, pulse rate, rectal temperature, and skin temperature increased significantly ( p < 0.01), while hematological responses decreased significantly ( p < 0.01) during the summer . Blood urea nitrogen levels were higher , while blood glucose concentrations were lower during the summer. Among the estimated blood electrolytes, decreased sodium (Na + ) and chloride (Cl − ) ions were observed during the winter, while lower concentrations of potassium (K + ) ions were noted in the summer. The Sirohi breed showed reduced levels of variation in the responses observed during the experiment. The study concluded that the Sirohi breed's superior resilience in semi-arid climates, with smaller response variations compared to the Barbari breed is due to their adaptive ability across different seasons.
