Abstract:Nonlinear Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov equations are investigated. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence and uniqueness of a nonnegative solution with a prescribed value of the integral. Convergence of solutions for the Cauchy problem to a solution of the stationary equation is shown. An important distinction from the known results is a very general form of the nonlinearity, which makes it possible to consider simultaneously a local and nonlocal dependence of coefficients on solutions.

Fundamental solutions to Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations with rough coefficients: existence, uniqueness, upper estimates

Abstract:We show the existence and uniqueness of fundamental solution operators to Kolmo\-gorov-Fokker-Planck equations with rough (measurable) coefficients and local or integral diffusion on finite and infinite time strips. In the local case, that is to say when the diffusion operator is of differential type, we prove $Ł^2$ decay using Davies' method and the conservation property. We also prove that the existence of a generalized fundamental solution with the expected pointwise Gaussian upper bound is equivalent to Moser's $Ł^2-Ł^\infty$ estimates for local weak solutions to the equation and its adjoint. When coefficients are real, this gives the existence and uniqueness of such a generalized fundamental solution and a new and natural way to obtain pointwise decay.

Abstract:An operatorial based approach is used here to prove the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution $u$ to the time-varying nonlinear Fokker--Planck equation $u_t(t,x)-\Delta(a(t,x,u(t,x))u(t,x))+{\rm div}(b(t,x,u(t,x))u(t,x))=0$ in $(0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}$ $u(0,x)=u_0(x),\ x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ in the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, under appropriate conditions on the $a:[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $b:[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^d.$ It is proved also that, if $u_0$ is a density of a probability measure, so is $u(t,\cdot)$ for all $t\ge0$. Moreover, we construct a weak solution to the McKean-Vlasov SDE associated with the Fokker-Planck equation such that $u(t)$ is the density of its time marginal law. MSC: 60H15, 47H05, 47J05. In particular, we extend the parametrix method to this setting and we prove existence and uniqueness of measure solutions to the associated Cauchy problem, as well as the equivalence with the corresponding stochastic formulation.

Abstract:We consider Kolmogorov operators with constant diffusion matrices and linear drifts, i.e., Ornstein–Uhlenbeck operators, and show that all solutions to the corresponding stationary Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov equations (including signed solutions) are invariant measures for the generated semigroups. This also gives a relatively explicit description of all solutions.

Abstract:In this article, we establish embeddings {à} la Lions and transfer of regularity {à} la Bouchut for a large scale of kinetic spaces. We use them to identify a notion of weak solutions to Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations with (local or integral) diffusion and rough (measurable) coefficients under minimal requirements. We prove their existence and uniqueness for a large class of source terms, first in full space for the time, position and velocity variables and then for the kinetic Cauchy problem on infinite and finite time intervals.

We present a priori estimates and unique solvability results in the mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces for the kinetic Kolmogorov–Fokker–Planck (KFP) equation in divergence form. The leading coefficients are bounded uniformly nondegenerate with respect to the velocity variable [math] and satisfy a vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) type condition. We consider the [math] case separately and treat more general equations, which include the relativistic KFP equation. This paper is a continuation of our previous work on [math] estimates for KFP equations in nondivergence form.

Gehring's Lemma for kinetic Fokker-Planck equations

Abstract:In this article, we establish a "Gehring lemma" for a real function satisfying a reverse Hölder inequality on all "kinetic cylinders" contained in a large one: it asserts that the integrability degree of the function improves under such an assumption. The kinetic cylinders are derived from the non-commutative group of invariances of the Kolmogorov equation. Our contributions here are (1) the extension of Gehring's Lemma to this kinetic (hypoelliptic) scaling used to generate the cylinders, (2) the localisation of the lemma in this hypoelliptic context (using ideas from the elliptic theory), (3) the streamlining of a short and quantitative proof. We then use this lemma to establish that the velocity gradient of weak solutions to linear kinetic equations of Fokker-Planck type with rough coefficients have Lebesgue integrability strictly greater than two, while the natural energy estimate merely ensures that it is square integrable. Our argument here is new but relies on Poincaré-type inequalities established in previous works.

Abstract:We prove global Schauder estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov equations with coefficients that are Hölder continuous in the spatial variables but only measurable in time. Compared to other available results in the literature, our estimates are optimal in the sense that the inherent Hölder spaces are the strongest possible under the given assumptions: in particular, under a parabolic Hörmander condition, we introduce Hölder norms defined in terms of the intrinsic geometry that the operator induces on the space-time variables. The technique is based on the existence and the regularity estimates of the fundamental solution of the equation. These results are essential for studying backward Kolmogorov equations associated with kinetic-type diffusions, e.g. stochastic Langevin equation.

Abstract:We extend the De Giorgi--Nash--Moser theory to a class of kinetic Fokker-Planck equations and deduce new results on the Landau-Coulomb equation. More precisely, we first study the H{ö}lder regularity and establish a Harnack inequality for solutions to a general linear equation of Fokker-Planck type whose coefficients are merely measurable and essentially bounded, i.e. assuming no regularity on the coefficients in order to later derive results for non-linear problems. This general equation has the formal structure of the hypoelliptic equations "of type II" , sometimes also called ultraparabolic equations of Kolmogorov type, but with rough coefficients: it combines a first-order skew-symmetric operator with a second-order elliptic operator involving derivatives along only part of the coordinates and with rough coefficients. These general results are then applied to the non-negative essentially bounded weak solutions of the Landau equation with inverse-power law $\gamma$ $\in$ [--d, 1] whose mass, energy and entropy density are bounded and mass is bounded away from 0, and we deduce the H{ö}lder regularity of these solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly investigate a class of Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck operator with 4 different scalings in nondivergence form. And we assume the coefficients $a^{ij}$ are only measurable in $t$ and satisfy the vanishing mean oscillation in space variables. We establish a global priori estimates of $\nabla_x^u$, $\dy u$ and $\dz u$ in $L^p$ space which extend the work of Dong and Yastrzhembskiy \cite{ref49} where they focus on the 3 different scalings KFP operator. Moreover we establish a kind of Poincare inequality for homogeneous equations.

The second order coefficients (except $a^{11}$) are assumed to be only measurable in time and one spatial variable, and VMO in the other spatial variables. Abstract:We interpret a class of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations with reaction as gradient flows over the space of Radon measures equipped with the recently introduced Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. The driving entropy of the gradient flow is not assumed to be geodesically convex or semi-convex. We prove new generalized dissipation inequalities, which allow us to control the relative entropy by its production. We establish the entropic exponential convergence of the trajectories of the flow to the equilibrium. Along with other applications, this result has an ecological interpretation as a trend to the ideal free distribution for a class of fitness-driven models of population dynamics. Our existence theorem for weak solutions under mild assumptions on the nonlinearity is new even in the absence of the reaction term.

A uniform-in-time nonlocal approximation of the standard Fokker-Planck equation

Abstract:We study a nonlocal approximation of the Fokker-Planck equation in which we can estimate the speed of convergence to equilibrium in a way which respects the local limit of the equation. This uniform estimate cannot be easily obtained with standard inequalities or entropy methods, but can be obtained through the use of Harris's theorem, finding interesting links to quantitative versions of the central limit theorem in probability. As a consequence one can prove that solutions of this nonlocal approximation converge to solutions of the usual Fokker-Planck equation uniformly in time -- hence we show the approximation is asymptotic-preserving in this sense. The associated equilibrium has some interesting tail and regularity properties, which we also study.

Nonlinear Fokker--Planck--Kolmogorov equations as gradient flows on the space of probability measures

Abstract:We propose a general method to identify nonlinear Fokker--Planck--Kolmogorov equations (FPK equations) as gradient flows on the space of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a natural differential geometry. Our notion of gradient flow does not depend on any underlying metric structure such as the Wasserstein distance, but is derived from purely differential geometric principles. We explicitly identify the associated energy functions $E$ and show that these are Lyapunov functions for the FPK solutions. Moreover, we show restricted uniqueness results for such gradient flows, and we also prove that the gradient of $E$ is a gradient field on $\mathbb{R}^d$, which can be approximated by smooth gradient fields. These results cover classical and generalized porous media equations, where the latter have a generalized diffusivity function and a nonlinear transport-type first-order perturbation.

Abstract:We consider a parabolic partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and measure or $L^1$ data. The key difficulty consists in a presence of a monotone operator~$A$ subjected to a non-standard growth condition, controlled by the exponent $p$ depending on the time and the spatial variable. We show the existence of a weak and an entropy solution to our system, as well as the uniqueness of an entropy solution, under the assumption of boundedness and log-Hölder continuity of the variable exponent~$p$ with respect to the spatial variable. On the other hand, we do not assume any smoothness of~$p$ with respect to the time variable.

Abstract:Continuous-time Markov chains associated to finite-volume discretization schemes of Fokker-Planck equations are constructed. Sufficient conditions under which quantitative exponential decay in the $\phi$-entropy and Wasserstein distance are established, implying modified logarithmic Sobolev, Poincaré, and discrete Beckner inequalities. The results are not restricted to additive potentials and do not make use of discrete Bochner-type identities. The proof for the $\phi$-decay relies on a coupling technique due to Conforti, while the proof for the Wasserstein distance uses the path coupling method. Furthermore, exponential equilibration for discrete-time Markov chains is proved, based on an abstract discrete Bakry-Emery method and a path coupling.
