Abstract:We consider a parabolic partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and measure or $L^1$ data. The key difficulty consists in a presence of a monotone operator~$A$ subjected to a non-standard growth condition, controlled by the exponent $p$ depending on the time and the spatial variable. We show the existence of a weak and an entropy solution to our system, as well as the uniqueness of an entropy solution, under the assumption of boundedness and log-Hölder continuity of the variable exponent~$p$ with respect to the spatial variable. On the other hand, we do not assume any smoothness of~$p$ with respect to the time variable.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the existence and uniqueness of solutions to parabolic partial differential equations with measure or \(L^1\) data in the presence of a monotone operator \(A\) with non - standard growth conditions. Specifically, the paper focuses on the parabolic problem in the following form:
\[
\partial_t u(t,x)-\text{div}_x A(t,x,\nabla_x u)=f(t,x),\quad (t,x)\in\Omega_T,
\]
where \(\Omega_T=(0,T)\times\Omega\) is a cylindrical region, \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^d\) is a Lipschitz domain, and \(T\) is the length of the time interval. The boundary and initial conditions are:
\[
u|_{\partial\Omega} = 0,\quad u(0,x)=u_0(x).
\]
The operator \(A\) here is nonlinear but satisfies an ellipticity condition and behaves like a \(p(t,x)\)-Laplacian - type setting, that is:
\[
A(t,x,\xi)\sim|\xi|^{p(t,x)-2}\xi.
\]
The main objective of the paper is to introduce the existence theory of weak solutions and entropy solutions and, if possible, prove the uniqueness of entropy solutions. In particular, the paper considers the case where \(p(t,x)\) satisfies the following conditions:
\[
1 < p_{\min}\leq p(t,x)\leq p_{\max}<\infty\quad \text{a.e. in }\Omega_T,
\]
and \(p(t,x)\) is log - Hölder continuous with respect to the space variable, but there are no smoothness requirements for the time variable. This setting is very important in dealing with many physical problems, especially in the analysis of materials such as electrorheological fluids, whose properties change with the underlying electric field, which is usually a relatively smooth function of the space variable but may be discontinuous in the time variable.
The key contribution of the paper lies in allowing \(p(t,x)\) to depend on the space and time variables while not requiring any smoothness assumptions on \(p(t,x)\) for the time variable, in contrast to previous work. In addition, the paper also considers very weak data assumptions, which force researchers to go beyond the classical weak solution theory and introduce different concepts such as entropy solutions.
