Abstract:In this paper, the problem of whether the left tail and the right tail of a distribution share the same extreme value index (EVI) is addressed and we propose two different test statistics. The first one is based on the result of the joint asymptotic normality of the two Hill estimators for the EVIs of both tails. And therefore, we can construct a quotient-type test statistic, which is asymptotic (2)(1) distributed after some standardization. The second test statistic proposed in this paper is inspired by the two-sample empirical likelihood methodology, and we prove its non parametric version of Wilk's theorem. At last, we compare the efficiencies of our two test statistics and the maximum likelihood (ML) ratio test statistic proposed by Jondeau and Rockinger (2003) in terms of empirical first type error and power through a number of simulation studies, which indicate that the performance of the ML ratio test statistic is worse than our two test statistics in most cases.

Abstract:An increasing concern of producers of educational assessments is fraudulent behavior during the assessment (van der Linden, 2009). Benefiting from item preknowledge (e.g., Eckerly, 2017; McLeod, Lewis, & Thissen, 2003) is one type of fraudulent behavior. This article suggests two new test statistics for detecting individuals who may have benefited from item preknowledge; the statistics can be used for both nonadaptive and adaptive assessments that may include either or both of dichotomous and polytomous items. Each new statistic has an asymptotic standard normal n distribution. It is demonstrated in detailed simulation studies that the Type I error rates of the new statistics are close to the nominal level and the values of power of the new statistics are larger than those of an existing statistic for addressing the same problem.

Enhanced power enhancements for testing many moment equalities: Beyond the $2$- and $\infty$-norm

Abstract:Contemporary testing problems in statistics are increasingly complex, i.e., high-dimensional. Tests based on the $2$- and $\infty$-norm have received considerable attention in such settings, as they are powerful against dense and sparse alternatives, respectively. The power enhancement principle of Fan et al. (2015) combines these two norms to construct improved tests that are powerful against both types of alternatives. In the context of testing whether a candidate parameter satisfies a large number of moment equalities, we construct a test that harnesses the strength of all $p$-norms with $p\in[2, \infty]$. As a result, this test is consistent against strictly more alternatives than any test based on a single $p$-norm. In particular, our test is consistent against more alternatives than tests based on the $2$- and $\infty$-norm, which is what most implementations of the power enhancement principle target. We illustrate the scope of our general results by using them to construct a test that simultaneously dominates the Anderson-Rubin test (based on $p=2$), tests based on the $\infty$-norm and power enhancement based combinations of these in terms of consistency in the linear instrumental variable model with many instruments.

Abstract:Abstract Three self-normalized two-sample test statistics are proposed for testing whether or not i = 1, 2, are equal for a given v > 0, where μi and are the common mean and variance of the ith sample for i = 1, 2. They can be applied, but not limited to, the problems of the testing the equality of coefficients of variance when v = 1 and the equality of variance-to-mean ratio when v = 2. The self-normalized two-sample test statistics are distribution free and only dependent on the sample means and sample variances of both samples. It is shown that these test statistics are asymptotically normally distributed under the null hypothesis for each fixed v > 0. Simulation studies support the theoretical results. In addition, we illustrate the applicability of the proposed test by comparing students’ grades in seven semesters at a university in China and comparing the heights as well as weights of males to those of females, who have had their annual health examination at a health center in China.

Abstract:Motivated by applications in high-dimensional settings, we propose a novel approach for testing the equality of two or more populations by constructing a class of intensity centered score processes. The resulting tests are analogous in spirit to the well-known class of weighted log-rank statistics that are widely used in survival analysis. The test statistics are nonparametric, computationally simple, and applicable to high-dimensional data. We establish the usual large sample properties by showing that the underlying log-rank score process converges weakly to a Gaussian random field with zero mean under the null hypothesis and with a drift under the contiguous alternatives. For the Kolmogorov-Smirnov-type and the Cramervon Mises-type statistics, we also establish the consistency result for any fixed alternative. Cutoff points for the test statistics are obtained by permutations or a simulation-based resampling method. The new approach is applied to a study of brain activation measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging when performing two linguistic tasks and also to a prostate cancer DNA microarray dataset. Abstract:Abstract This study describes extended Anderson and Hauck procedures for equivalence testing of slope coefficients and mean responses in one and two regression lines. The general formulation of asymmetric equivalence ranges permits a wide variety of equivalence questions to be tested for a target magnitude or a negligible value. Specifically, the equivalence tests are useful for assessing negligible trend and similar response in a single regression line, and for evaluating unimportant interaction-moderation effect and comparable simple effect between two linear regression lines. The associated power functions and sample size procedures are also derived and compared under the random and fixed model settings. According to the analytic justification and empirical assessment, the exact approaches have a clear advantage over the approximate formulas for accommodating the full stochastic nature of both the response and predictor variables. Computer algorithms are also provided for conducting the proposed equivalence tests, power calculations, and sample size determinations in simple linear regressions.

Abstract:We outline a general paradigm for constructing asymptotically distribution-free (ADF) goodness-of-fit tests, which can be regarded as a generalization of Khmaladze (1993). This is achieved by a nonorthogonal projection of a class of functions onto the ortho-complement of the extended tangent space (ETS) associated with the null hypothesis. In parallel with the work of Bickel et al. (2006), we obtain transformed empirical processes (TEP) which are the building blocks for constructing omnibus tests such as the usual Kolmogorov-Smirnov type tests and Cramer-von Mise type tests, as well as Portmanteau tests and directional tests. The critical values can be tabulated due to the ADF property. All the tests are capable of detecting local (Pitman) alternative at the root-n scale. We shall illustrate the framework in several examples, mostly in regression model specification testing.
An efficient asymptotic approach for testing monotone proportions assuming an underlying logit based order dose-response model

Methodology

Abstract:When an underlying logit based order dose-response model is considered with small or moderate sample sizes, the Cochran-Armitage (CA) test represents the most efficient test in the framework of the test-statistics applied with asymptotic distributions for testing monotone proportions. The Wald and likelihood ratio (LR) test have much worse behaviour in type error I in comparison with the CA test. It suffers, however, from the weakness of not maintaining the nominal size. In this paper a family of test-statistics based on {\phi}-divergence measures is proposed and their asymptotic distribution under the null hypothesis is obtained either for one-sided or two-sided hypothesis testing. A numerical example based on real data illustrates that the proposed test-statistics are simple for computation and moreover, the necessary goodness-of-fit test-statistic are easily calculated from them. The simulation study shows that the test based on the Cressie and Read (Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B, 46, 440-464, 1989) divergence measure usually provides a better nominal size than the CA test for small and moderate sample sizes.

Abstract:In many cases an optimum or computationally convenient test of a simple hypothesis $H_0$ against a simple alternative $H_1$ may be given in the following form. Reject $H_0$ if $S_n = \sum^n_{j=1} X_j \leqq k,$ where $X_1, X_2, \cdots, X_n$ are $n$ independent observations of a chance variable $X$ whose distribution depends on the true hypothesis and where $k$ is some appropriate number. In particular the likelihood ratio test for fixed sample size can be reduced to this form. It is shown that with each test of the above form there is associated an index $\rho$. If $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ are the indices corresponding to two alternative tests $e = \log \rho_1/\log \rho_2$ measures the relative efficiency of these tests in the following sense. For large samples, a sample of size $n$ with the first test will give about the same probabilities of error as a sample of size $en$ with the second test. To obtain the above result, use is made of the fact that $P(S_n \leqq na)$ behaves roughly like $m^n$ where $m$ is the minimum value assumed by the moment generating function of $X - a$. It is shown that if $H_0$ and $H_1$ specify probability distributions of $X$ which are very close to each other, one may approximate $\rho$ by assuming that $X$ is normally distributed.

Abstract:Levine and Drasgow (1988) suggested an approach based on the Neyman-Pearson lemma to detect examinees whose response patterns are "aberrant" due to cheating, language issues, and so on. Belov (2016) used the approach of Levine and Drasgow (1988) to suggest a statistic based on the Neyman-Pearson Lemma (SBNPL) to detect item preknowledge when the investigator knows which items are compromised. This brief report proves that the SBNPL of Belov (2016) is equivalent to a statistic suggested for the same purpose by Drasgow, Levine, and Zickar 20 years ago.

Abstract:Let $X_1, \cdots, X_m$ and $Y_1, \cdots, Y_n$ be ordered observations from the absolutely continuous cumulative distribution functions $F(x)$ and $G(x)$ respectively. If $z_{Ni} = 1$ when the $i$th smallest of $N = m + n$ observations is an $X$ and $z_{Ni} = 0$ otherwise, then many nonparametric test statistics are of the form $$mT_N = \sum^N_{i = 1} E_{Ni}z_{Ni}.$$ Theorems of Wald and Wolfowitz, Noether, Hoeffding, Lehmann, Madow, and Dwass have given sufficient conditions for the asymptotic normality of $T_N$. In this paper we extend some of these results to cover more situations with $F \neq G$. In particular it is shown for all alternative hypotheses that the Fisher-Yates-Terry-Hoeffding $c_1$-statistic is asymptotically normal and the test for translation based on it is at least as efficient as the $t$-test.

Abstract:The hypothesis testing problem of homogeneity of k (≥2) inverse Gaussian means against ordered alternatives is studied when nuisance or scale-like parameters are unknown and unequal. The maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of means and scale-like parameters are obtained when means satisfy some simple order restrictions and scale-like parameters are unknown and unequal. An iterative algorithm is proposed for finding these estimators. It has been proved that under a specific condition, the proposed algorithm converges to the true MLEs uniquely. A likelihood ratio test and two simultaneous tests are proposed. Further, an algorithm for finding the MLEs of parameters is given when means are unequal but unknown. Using the estimators, the likelihood ratio test is developed for testing against ordered alternative means. Using the asymptotic distribution, the asymptotic likelihood ratio test is proposed. However, for small samples, it does not perform well. Hence, a parametric bootstrap likelihood ratio test (PB LRT) is proposed. Therefore, the asymptotic validity of the bootstrap procedure has been shown. Using the Box-type approximation method, test statistics are developed for the two-sample problem of equality of means when scale-like parameters are heterogeneous. Using these, two PB-based heuristic tests are proposed. Asymptotic null distributions are derived and PB accuracy is also developed. Two asymptotic tests are also proposed using the asymptotic null distributions. To get the critical points and test statistics of the three PB tests and two asymptotic tests, an 'R' package is developed and shared on GitHub. Applications of the tests are illustrated using real data.

Abstract:Asymptotic goodness-of-fit methods in contingency table analysis can struggle with sparse data, especially in multi-way tables where it can be infeasible to meet sample size requirements for a robust application of distributional assumptions. However, algebraic statistics provides exact alternatives to these classical asymptotic methods that remain viable even with sparse data. We apply these methods to a context in psychometrics and education research that leads naturally to multi-way contingency tables: the analysis of differential item functioning (DIF). We explain concretely how to apply the exact methods of algebraic statistics to DIF analysis using the R package algstat , and we compare their performance to that of classical asymptotic methods.

Abstract:The equality of two group variances is frequently tested in experiments. However, criticisms of null hypothesis statistical testing on means have recently arisen and there is interest in other types of statistical tests of hypotheses, such as superiority/non-inferiority and equivalence. Although these tests have become more common in psychology and social sciences, the corresponding sample size estimation for these tests is rarely discussed, especially when the sampling unit costs are unequal or group sizes are unequal for two groups. Thus, for finding optimal sample size, the present study derived an initial allocation by approximating the percentiles of an F distribution with the percentiles of the standard normal distribution and used the exhaustion algorithm to select the best combination of group sizes, thereby ensuring the resulting power reaches the designated level and is maximal with a minimal total cost. In this manner, optimization of sample size planning is achieved. The proposed sample size determination has a wide range of applications and is efficient in terms of Type I errors and statistical power in simulations. Finally, an illustrative example from a report by the Health Survey for England, 1995-1997, is presented using hypertension data. For ease of application, four R Shiny apps are provided and benchmarks for setting equivalence margins are suggested.
Intrinsic tests for the equality of two correlated proportions

Abstract:Correlated proportions arise in longitudinal (panel) studies. A typical example is the ``opinion swing'' problem: ``Has the proportion of people favoring a politician changed after his recent speech to the nation on TV?''. Since the same group of individuals is interviewed before and after the speech, the two proportions are correlated. A natural null hypothesis to be tested is whether the corresponding population proportions are equal. A standard Bayesian approach to this problem has already been considered in the literature, based on a Dirichlet prior for the cell-probabilities of the underlying two-by-two table under the alternative hypothesis, together with an induced prior under the null. In lack of specific prior information, a diffuse (e.g. uniform) distribution may be used. We claim that this approach is not satisfactory, since in a testing problem one should make sure that the prior under the alternative be adequately centered around the region specified by the null, in order to obtain a fair comparison between the two hypotheses. Following an intrinsic prior methodology, we develop two strategies for the construction of a collection of objective priors increasingly peaked around the null. We provide a simple interpretation of their structure in terms of weighted imaginary sample scenarios. We illustrate our method by means of three examples, carrying out sensitivity analysis and providing comparison with existing results.

Abstract:Equivalence tests may be tested with mean difference against a margin adjusted for variance. The justification of using variance adjusted non-inferiority or equivalence margin is for the consideration that a larger margin should be used with large measurement variability. However, under the null hypothesis, the test statistic does not follow a t-distribution or any well-known distribution even when the measurement is normally distributed. In this study, we investigate asymptotic tests for testing the equivalence hypothesis. We apply the Wald test statistic and construct three Wald tests that differ in their estimates of variances. These estimates of variances include the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE), the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimate (UMVUE), and the constrained maximum likelihood estimate (CMLE). We evaluate the performance of these three tests in terms of type I error rate control and power using simulations under a variety of settings. Our empirical results show that the asymptotic normalized tests are conservative in most settings, while the Wald tests based on ML- and UMVU-method could produce inflated significance levels when group sizes are unequal. However, the Wald test based on CML-method provides an improvement in power over the other two Wald tests for medium and small sample size studies.

Abstract:A decision problem frequently occurring in metrology is that of compatibility of data obtained by two (or several) different laboratories, methods or instruments. One laboratory can be a prestigious national metrology institute whose data are considered to be a gold standard or a certified reference material interval. When each laboratory presents its results in the form of a coverage interval for the measurand, several statistical approaches to this conformity assessment problem are reviewed including the classical ‘equality of means’ hypotheses tests. A new compatibility hypothesis is formulated in terms of consistency of laboratory results and compliance with a maximum permitted uncertainty. The power functions of these tests are compared numerically. The Kullback–Leibler information number is suggested as a directional (asymmetric) interchangeability index.

Abstract:In this paper, a one-way heteroscedastic ANOVA model is considered with exponentially distributed errors. The likelihood ratio test (LRT) and two multiple comparison tests are developed for testing against ordered alternatives. A parametric bootstrap (PB) approach is proposed for implementation of tests and its asymptotic accuracy is proved. An extensive simulation study shows that all the proposed tests are accurate in terms of achieving the nominal size value, even for small samples. The proposed simultaneous confidence intervals are also seen to maintain the preassigned coverage probability. The powers of these tests are compared with a recently proposed test, which is quite conservative. Finally, the proposed tests are illustrated with the help of three data sets related to medical studies. We have developed an 'R' package for implementing our test procedures and shared it on the open platform 'GitHub.'
