Abstract:As cities across the world grow and the mobility of populations increases, there has also been a corresponding increase in the number of vehicles on roads. The result of this has been a proliferation of challenges for authorities with regard to road traffic management. A consequence of this has been congestion of traffic, more accidents, and pollution. Accidents are a still major cause of death, despite the development of sophisticated systems for traffic management and other technologies linked with vehicles. Hence, it is necessary that a common system for accident management is developed. For instance, traffic congestion in most urban areas can be alleviated by the real-time planning of routes. However, the designing of an efficient route planning algorithm to attain a globally optimal vehicle control is still a challenge that needs to be solved, especially when the unique preferences of drivers are considered. The aim of this paper is to establish an accident management system that makes use of vehicular ad hoc networks coupled with systems that employ cellular technology in public transport. This system ensures the possibility of real-time communication among vehicles, ambulances, hospitals, roadside units, and central servers. In addition, the accident management system is able to lessen the amount of time required to alert an ambulance that it is required at an accident scene by using a multihop optimal forwarding algorithm. Moreover, an optimal route planning algorithm (ORPA) is proposed in this system to improve the aggregate spatial use of a road network, at the same time bringing down the travel cost of operating a vehicle. This can reduce the incidence of vehicles being stuck on congested roads. Simulations are performed to evaluate ORPA, and the results are compared with existing algorithms. The evaluation results provided evidence that ORPA outperformed others in terms of average ambulance speed and travelling time. Finally, our system makes it easier for ambulance to quickly make their way through traffic congestion so that the chance of saving lives is increased.

Abstract:During the last decade, the research on Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has improved exponentially in real-life scenarios to provide optimized transport network performance. It is a matter of importance that alert messages are delivered promptly to prevent vehicular traffic problems. The fact is an ITS system per se could be a part of a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) which is an extension of a wireless network. In all sorts of wireless ad hoc networks, the network topology is subjected to change due to the mobility of network nodes; therefore, an existing explored route between two nodes could be demolished in a minor fraction of time. When it comes to the VANETs, the topology likely changes due to the high velocity of nodes. On the other hand, time is a crucial factor playing an important role in message handling between the network's nodes. In this paper, we propose Time delay-based Multipath Routing (TMR) protocol that effectively identifies an optimized path for packet delivery to the destination vehicle with a minimal time delay. Our algorithm gives a higher priority to alert messages compared to normal messages. It also selects the routes with the short round-trip time (RTT) within the RTT threshold. As a result, our algorithm would realize two goals. Firstly, it would speed up the data transmission rate and deliver data packets, particularly warning messages, to the destination vehicle promptly and therefore avoid vehicular problems such as car accidents. Secondly, the TMR algorithm reduces the data traffic load, particularly of the normal messages, to alleviate the pressure on the network and therefore avoids network congestion and data collisions. This, in turn, lessens the packets' retransmissions. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol, the TMR has been compared with the other protocols such as AOMDV, FF-AOMDV, EGSR, QMR, and ISR. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed protocol proves its excellent performance compared to other protocols.

Abstract:Road traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of deaths and injuries in the word resulting in the not only loss of precious human lives but also affect the economic resources. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1.35 million people are killed, and over 50 million are injured due to road accidents throughout the world. Unfortunately, as compared to other developing countries with the same ratio of vehicle possession, in Saudi Arabia, the fatalities and injuries are much higher. Every year around 7000-9000 people die, and over 39000 serious injuries occur in road accidents. There is at least one accident happens every minute in Saudi Arabia. To decrease the road traffic accidents, fatalities, and injuries caused by them, the Saudi Ministry of Interior came up with new rules, regulations, and hefty fines. Also, they introduced a new traffic system called the SAHER system. Still, due to the static nature and other limitations of the system, the drivers found loopholes and ways to deceive the system to avoid the fines and not being caught by the system. The most common violation includes excess speed, abrupt deceleration, and distracted driving. In this paper, we propose a smart traffic surveillance system based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) using 5G technology. This traffic monitoring system covers the existing limitations of the SAHER system deployed in KSA. By overcoming the existing limitations and loopholes of the SAHER system, it is observed that the number of accidents and fatalities can be decreased. The projected results show that those violations when to overcome, the number of accidents per year falls to 299,317 leading to 4,868 deaths and 33,199 injuries for 1st year, and in the next five years the number of deaths and will be decreased to 3,745 and injuries to 16,600 based on the current data available. We aim the system will further reduce the number of accidents and fatalities and injuries caused by it.

Abstract:An increasing number of vehicles on the roads increases the risk of accidents. In bad weather (e.g., heavy rainfall, strong winds, storms, and fog), this risk almost doubles due to bad visibility as well as road conditions. If an accident happens, especially in bad weather, it is important to inform approaching vehicles about it. Otherwise, there might be another accident, i.e., a multiple-vehicle collision (MVC). If the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is not informed in a timely fashion about the incident, fatalities might increase because they do not receive immediate first aid. Detecting humans or animals would undoubtedly provide us with a better answer for reducing human fatalities in traffic accidents. In this research, an accident alert light and sound (AALS) system is proposed for auto accident detection and alerts with all types of vehicles. No changes are required in non-equipped vehicles (nEVs) and EVs because the system is installed on the roadside. The idea behind this research is to make smart roads (SRs) instead of equipping each vehicle with a separate system. Wireless communication is needed only when an accident is detected. This study is based on different sensors that are used to build SRs to detect accidents. Pre-saved locations are used to reduce the time needed to find the accident’s location without the help of a global positioning system (GPS). Additionally, the proposed framework for the AALS also reduces the risk of MVCs.

Abstract:Road safety is an all-time global concern. Every day a large number of human lives are lost with many sustaining a disability as a result of their injury due to car accidents and delay in calling the rescue services. Recently, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have emerged as an efficient way of improving interpretation of transportation systems and enhancing travel safety. Accident detection systems are one of the most effective (ITS) tools. The accident detection system which based on Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) can be accomplished though one or several sensors, the system can gather the information and coordinates of accident spot, then send this data to the rescue services center over a network link in the shortest time, In this paper, we propose an enhanced system that composed of a GPS receiver, Vibration sensor, GSM Modem and integrated with Vehicular AD-Hoc Network (VANET). The employment of (VANET) assists to increase the data delivery by providing a second path to send an emergency message to The Rescue Services Center (RSC) whenever an accident located at out of coverage area of GSM network. Simulation tested two of distance ranges among nodes (Long u0026 Short) and the result shown that VANET modified algorithm based on average signal strength has the advantage of choosing the optimum route to deliver data and own enhanced ratio according to the distances (17.5% u0026 24.1%) by comparing with a maximum signal strength route.

Abstract:The transportation industry is crucial to the realization of a smart city. However, the current growth in vehicle numbers is not being matched by an increase in road capacity. Congestion may boost the number of accidents, harm economic growth, and result in higher gas emissions. Currently, traffic congestion is seen as a severe threat to urban life. Suffering as a result of increased car traffic, insufficient infrastructure, and inefficient traffic management has exceeded the tolerance limit. Since route decisions are typically made in a short amount of time, the visualization of the data must be presented in a highly conceivable way. Also, the data generated by the transportation system face difficulties in processing and sometimes lack effective usage in certain fields. Hence, to overcome the challenges in computer vision, a novel computer vision-based traffic management system is proposed by integrating a wireless sensor network (WSN) and visual analytics framework. This research aimed to analyze average message delivery, average latency, average access, average energy consumption, and network performance. Wireless sensors are used in the study to collect road metrics, quantify them, and then rank them for entry. For optimization of the traffic data, improved phase timing optimization (IPTO) was used. The whole experimentation was carried out in a virtual environment. It was observed from the experimental results that the proposed approach outperformed other existing approaches.

Abstract:In smart cities, the fast increase in automobiles has caused congestion, pollution, and disruptions in the transportation of commodities. Each year, there are more fatalities and cases of permanent impairment due to everyday road accidents. To control traffic congestion, provide secure data transmission also detecting accidents the IoT-based Traffic Management System is used. To identify, gather, and send data, autonomous cars, and intelligent gadgets are equipped with an IoT-based ITM system with a group of sensors. The transport system is being improved via machine learning. In this work, an Adaptive Traffic Management system (ATM) with an accident alert sound system (AALS) is used for managing traffic congestion and detecting the accident. For secure traffic data transmission Secure Early Traffic-Related EveNt Detection (SEE-TREND) is used. The design makes use of several scenarios to address every potential problem with the transportation system. The suggested ATM model continuously modifies the timing of traffic signals based on the volume of traffic and anticipated movements from neighboring junctions. By progressively allowing cars to pass green lights, it considerably reduces traveling time. It also relieves traffic congestion by creating a seamless transition. The results of the trial show that the suggested ATM system fared noticeably better than the traditional traffic-management method and will be a leader in transportation planning for smart-city-based transportation systems. The suggested ATM-ALTREND solution provides secure traffic data transmission that decreases traffic jams and vehicle wait times, lowers accident rates, and enhances the entire travel experience.

Abstract:Rapid advances in wireless communication technologies coupled with ongoing massive development in vehicular networking standards and innovations in computing, sensing, and analytics have paved the way for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to develop rapidly in the near future. ITS provides a complete solution for the efficient and intelligent management of real-time traffic, wherein sensory data is collected from within the vehicles (i.e., via their onboard units) as well as data exchanged between the vehicles, between the vehicles and their supporting roadside infrastructure/network, among the vehicles and vulnerable pedestrians, subsequently paving the way for the realization of the futuristic Internet of Vehicles. The traditional intent of an ITS system is to detect, monitor, control, and subsequently reduce traffic congestion based on a real-time analysis of the data pertinent to certain patterns of the road traffic, including traffic density at a geographical area of interest, precise velocity of vehicles, current and predicted travelling trajectories and times, etc. However, merely relying on an ITS framework is not an optimal solution. In case of dense traffic environments, where communication broadcasts from hundreds of thousands of vehicles could potentially choke the entire network (and so could lead to fatal accidents in the case of autonomous vehicles that depend on reliable communications for their operational safety), a fall back to the traditional decentralized vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) approach becomes necessary. It is therefore of critical importance to enhance the situational awareness of vehicular drivers so as to enable them to make quick but well-founded manual decisions in such safety-critical situations.

TARS: A Novel Mechanism for Truly Autonomous Resource Selection in LTE-V2V Mode 4

Abstract:Effective communication in vehicular networks depends on the scheduling of wireless channel resources. There are two types of channel resource scheduling in Release 14 of the 3GPP, i.e., (1) controlled by eNodeB and (2) a distributed scheduling carried out by every vehicle, known as Autonomous Resource Selection (ARS). The most suitable resource scheduling for vehicle safety applications is the ARS mechanism. ARS includes (a) counter selection (i.e., specifying the number of subsequent transmissions) and (b) resource reselection (specifying the reuse of the same resource after counter expiry). ARS is a decentralized approach for resource selection. Therefore, resource collisions can occur during the initial selection, where multiple vehicles might select the same resource, hence resulting in packet loss. ARS is not adaptive towards vehicle density and employs a uniform random selection probability approach for counter selection and reselection. As a result, it can prevent some vehicles from transmitting in a congested vehicular network. To this end, the paper presents Truly Autonomous Resource Selection (TARS) for vehicular networks. TARS considers resource allocation as a problem of locally detecting the selected resources at neighbor vehicles to avoid resource collisions. The paper also models the behavior of counter selection and resource block reselection on resource collisions using the Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC). Observation of the model is used to propose a fair policy of counter selection and resource reselection in ARS. The simulation of the proposed TARS mechanism showed better performance in terms of resource collision probability and the packet delivery ratio when compared with the LTE Mode 4 standard and with a competing approach proposed by Jianhua He et al.

Abstract:Journal of Interconnection Networks, Ahead of Print. The aim of the intelligent transport system (ITS) is the improvement of road safety. This system is based on intelligent vehicles composing a network called Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET). This network suffers from a disconnection problem due to its dynamic topology. Therefore, a framework of collaboration between the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and VANET called Hybr1id Sensor and Vehicular Networks (HSVN) has been proposed. In HSVN, the WSN can play the role of a relay between disconnected vehicles. This paper aims to propose a strategy allowing the exchange of messages between the two networks. That reduces the number of accidents and improves the management of road traffic. We can summarize our proposition in three essential points. First, an algorithm is proposed to decompose the vehicular network into clusters. This algorithm takes into account the mobile aspect of vehicles and the road model. Second, a data encoding model and a message model have been proposed to improve the quality of messages. That reduces the response time of drivers to a critical situation. Finally, an exchange algorithm is proposed to ensure the transmission of road messages between vehicles and sensors. Its principle of work is based on several scenarios defined relative to the network condition. Obtained results show an improvement in the delivery delays of road messages and the number of exchanged road messages between the vehicles.

Abstract:Recently, applying Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in automotive industry has sparked a lot of interest due to its capacity to ensure focused organization across the board coupled with its vast versatility of isolating data from the control plane. However, the major concern in traffic network is that varied crisis and diversion messages are expected to be shared or brought into by the connected vehicles. Thus, disclosure of this information results in an evaluation of the steering and control of such messages. This research aims at employing SDN-assisted technique in heterogeneous vehicular organizations in executing information traffic-using optimal course determination and guiding in situations like a blockage in Vehicle Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). To realize this, a workable traffic reproduction model is proposed and the experiments realized a re-enactment findings in terms of Round Trip Time (RTT) and Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and improves the conventional information flow structure.

Abstract:Efficient traffic management has become a major concern within the framework of smart city projects. However, the increasing complexity of data exchanges and the growing importance of big data makes this task more challenging. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) face various challenges, including the management of massive data generated by different entities in their environment. In this context, a proposal is put forth for a real-time anomaly detection system with parallel data processing, thereby speeding up data processing. This approach accurately computes vehicle density for each section at any given time, enabling precise traffic management and the provision of information to vehicles regarding traffic density and the safest route to their destination. Furthermore, a machine learning-based prediction system has been developed to mitigate congestion problems and reduce accident risks. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed solution effectively addresses transportation issues while maintaining low latency and high precision.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) that are considered as a subset of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) can be applied in the field of transportation especially in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The routing process in these networks is a challenging task due to rapid topology changes, high vehicle mobility and frequent disconnection of links. Therefore, developing an efficient routing protocol that satisfies restriction of delay and minimum overhead is faced with many difficulties and limitations. Also, the detection of malicious vehicles is a significant task in VANETs. To address these issues, using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be helpful to cope with these limitations. In this paper, operation of UAVs in ad hoc mode and their cooperation with vehicles in VANETs are studied to help in the process of routing and detection of malicious vehicles. A routing protocol named VRU is proposed that includes two distinct ways of routing of data: (1) delivering packets of data between vehicles with the help of UAVs using a protocol named VRU_vu, and (2) routing packet of data between UAVs using a protocol named VRU_u. The NS-2.35 simulator under Linux Ubuntu 12.04 is utilized in order to appraise the performance of VRU routing components in an urban scenario. Also, VanetMobiSim generator of mobility and MobiSim are used to produce the motions of vehicles and to produce the motions of UAVs, respectively. The performance analysis displays that VRU protocol can improve the packet delivery ratio by 16% and detection ratio by 7% compared to other reviewed routing protocol. Also, VRU protocol decreases end-to-end delay by an average of 13% and overhead by 40%.

Abstract:In this paper, the application of transportation systems in real-time traffic conditions is evaluated with data handling representations. The proposed method is designed in such a way as to detect the number of loads that are present in a vehicle where functionality tasks are computed in the system. Compared to the existing approach, the design model in the proposed method is made by dividing the computing areas into several cluster regions, thereby reducing the complex monitoring system where control errors are minimized. Furthermore, a route management technique is combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm to transmit the data to appropriate central servers. Therefore, the combined objective case studies are examined as minimization and maximization criteria, thus increasing the efficiency of the proposed method. Finally, four scenarios are chosen to investigate the projected design’s effectiveness. In all simulated metrics, the proposed approach provides better operational outcomes for an average percentage of 97, thereby reducing the amount of traffic in real-time conditions.

Abstract:Every year, about 1.19 million people are killed in traffic accidents; hence, the United Nations has a goal of halving the number of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. In line with this objective, technological innovations in telecommunication, particularly brought about by the rise of 5G networks, have contributed to the development of modern Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) systems for communication. A New Radio V2X (NR-V2X) was introduced in the latest Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) releases which allows user devices to exchange information without relying on roadside infrastructures. This, together with Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC), has led to the significantly increased reliability, coverage, and efficiency of vehicular communication networks. The use of artificial intelligence (AI), especially K-means clustering, has been very promising in terms of supporting efficient data exchange in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). K-means is an unsupervised machine learning (ML) technique that groups vehicles located near each other geographically so that they can communicate with one another directly within these clusters while also allowing for inter-cluster communication via cluster heads. This paper proposes a multi-layered VANET-enabled Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) framework powered by unsupervised learning to optimize communication efficiency, scalability, and reliability. By leveraging AI in VANET solutions, the proposed framework aims to address road safety challenges and contribute to global efforts to meet the United Nations' 2030 target. Additionally, this framework's robust communication and data processing capabilities can be extended to eHealth monitoring systems, enabling real-time health data transmission and processing for continuous patient monitoring and timely medical interventions. This paper's contributions include exploring AI-driven approaches for enhanced data interaction, improved safety in VANET-based ITS environments, and potential applications in eHealth monitoring.

Abstract:Traffic systems have been built as a result of recent technological advancements. In application, dependable communication technology is essential to link any system needs. VANET technology is used to communicate data about intelligent traffic lights, which are focused on infrastructure during traffic accidents and mechanisms to reduce traffic congestion. To ensure reliable data transfer in VANET, appropriate routing protocols must be used. This research aims to improve data transmission in VANETs implemented in intelligent traffic lights. This study investigates the capability of combining the DSDV routing protocol with the routing protocol AODV to boost AODV on an OMNET++ simulator utilizing the 802.11p wireless standard. According to the simulation results obtained by analyzing the delay parameters, network QoS, and throughput on each protocol, the DSDV-AODV routing protocol performs better in three scenarios compared to QoS, delay, and throughput parameters in every scenario that uses network topology adapted to the conditions on the road intersections. The topology with 50 fixed + 50 mobile nodes yields the best results, with 0.00062 s delay parameters, a network QoS of 640 bits/s, and a throughput of 629.437 bits/s. Aside from the poor results on the network QoS parameters, the addition of mobile nodes to the topology influences both the results of delay and throughput metrics.

Abstract:Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) with their evolving data gathering capabilities will play a significant role in road safety and efficiency applications supported by Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), such as Traffic Signal Control (TSC) for urban traffic congestion management. However, their involvement will expand the space of security vulnerabilities and create larger threat vectors. In this paper, we perform the first detailed security analysis and implementation of a new cyber-physical attack category carried out by the network of CAVs against Adaptive Multi-Agent Traffic Signal Control (AMATSC), namely, coordinated Sybil attacks, where vehicles with forged or fake identities try to alter the data collected by the AMATSC algorithms to sabotage their decisions. Consequently, a novel, game-theoretic mitigation approach at the application layer is proposed to minimize the impact of such sophisticated data corruption attacks. The devised minimax game model enables the AMATSC algorithm to generate optimal decisions under a suspected attack, improving its resilience. Extensive experimentation is performed on a traffic dataset provided by the City of Montréal under real-world intersection settings to evaluate the attack impact. Our results improved time loss on attacked intersections by approximately 48.9%. Substantial benefits can be gained from the mitigation, yielding more robust adaptive control of traffic across networked intersections.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the vehicles total number growth rates, which exceed the rates of expansion and optimization of the transport infrastructure, the need for the introduction of real-time traffic forecasting and control systems is shown. The factors that make it possible to detect the probability of potentially dangerous situations on the road, such as traffic jams, accidents and lack of parking spaces, respectively, in certain urban areas, based on the data of sensor networks and surveillance cameras combined within the global system of the Internet of Things, have been determined. It is proposed to build a sensor network based on magnetic sensors, which allows for high-precision geolocation with refinement of the received data by using ultrasonic sensors and optical monitoring tools, while identification is carried out by reading RFID tags. It is shown that the task of optimal organization of the relay system includes the determination of the features of the city infrastructure and statistical indicators of the city's traffic flows, and for a multi-level communication system, protocols are determined depending on the distance between nodes, requirements for the level of data protection, data transmission speed, minimum radio signal amplitude, as well as restrictions on the power supply of a separate node. The presented topology of the relay network includes the organization of sensor nodes into clusters, transmission from the main node of the cluster to the gateway node, and from the gateway nodes to the base station. On the basis of the specified model, a scheme for building cluster self-organization algorithms can be presented by forming clusters in real time according to the topology of the cluster tree, which allows simplifying the data transfer subsystem and reducing the time of processing input data. The developed scheme for analyzing the traffic flow at the intersection and the availability of parking spaces can be used in the development of methodological recommendations for the implementation of the "Smart City" concept and the creation of software applications that provide drivers with information about the state of traffic and predicted changes within a certain time interval. Abstract:Nowadays Road traffic is a major issue in developing and under-developing countries. With the rampant increase in traffic, society faces major traffic threats including life threats and environmental threats, thus traffic management is a gruesome problem to address. The consequences of poor traffic management include road accidents, jamming traffic, pollution, and many more that can be life-threatening. Living in the twenty-first century with the emergence of technology and the applicability of smart cities provides a perfect solution to curb traffic issues. Keeping in view the deadlock and congestion in traffic, this work will provides solution by indigently detecting and prioritizing vehicles and non-vehicles. The research involves the implementation and comparison of two states of art algorithms Aggregated channel feature and a Point Tracker. Further, the algorithms are enhanced by improving traffic management in terms of identifying the category of transport, prioritizing the traffic which contains vehicles and non-vehicles on basis of the size of vehicle, type of the vehicle, and emergency providing priority to resolve the deadlock. Further, the proposed enhanced point tracker algorithm includes emergency detection in case of an accident and provides an alternative route to neighboring vehicles and non-vehicles. Enhanced ACF has detected a true positive rate of 80%, 89%, has detected true positive rates of 69%, and 79% having non-vehicle detected with assigned priority. Enhanced point tracker has detected true positive rate of 88%, 94%, and 86% having vehicles, non-vehicles, and assigned priority.
