Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The realization of an efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue largely because of an inherent difficulty in simultaneously ensuring the phase-matching condition and a coherent multiple-resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second-harmonic generation in an on-chip LiNbO3 microresonator fabricated by femtosecond-laser direct writing. We overcome the above difficulty by selectively exciting high-order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Thanks to the low optical absorption and high nonlinear optical coefficient of LiNbO3 crystal, we achieve a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.106 x 10(-3)/mW in the on-chip LiNbO3 microdisk with a diameter of approximately 102 mu m.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Our technique opens opportunities for integrated classical and quantum photonic applications.
Symmetric Second-Harmonic Generation in Sub-wavelength Periodically Poled Thin Film Lithium Niobate

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this article, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but also opens new avenues for leveraging submicron ferroelectric domain structures in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

Abstract:A double-ridge waveguide is designed for efficient and robust second-harmonic generation (SHG) using the thin-film lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. Perfect phase matching (PhM) is achieved between the fundamental waveguide mode at 1550 nm and a higher-order mode at the second harmonic. The fabrication tolerances of the PhM condition are simulated using a finite-difference method mode solver, and conversion efficiencies as high as 3.92/W are obtained for a 1-cm long waveguide. This design allows access to the largest element of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor, and represents a scalable alternative to waveguides based on periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The design has the potential for generating pairs of entangled photons in the infrared C-band by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC).

Abstract:The whispering-gallery-mode microcavities are important in fundamental science and practical applications, which also play an essential role in integrated photonic devices. Here, we prepared a 50 μ m diameter thin film lithium niobate on insulator (TFLNOI) microdisk with a Q value of 1.88 × 10 5 through photolithography-assisted dry-wet etching. Then, we utilize the strong thermo-optic birefringence of TFLNOI to demonstrate the second-harmonic generation (SHG) and highly temperature-tunable SHG in a TFLNOI microdisk resonator, wherein the normalized conversion efficiency of the second harmonic is 140% W −1 . Moreover, the tuning slope of spectral tuning is 1.68 nm K −1 for a telecom-band pump. Our device shows great promise for efficient on-chip wavelength conversion to produce highly tunable coherent visible light for broad applications.

Abstract:Highly-tunable coherent light generation is crucial for many important photonic applications. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a dominant approach for this purpose, which, however, exhibits a trade-off between the conversion efficiency and the wavelength tunability in a conventional nonlinear platform. Recent development of the integrated lithium niobate (LN) technology makes it possible to achieve a large wavelength tuning while maintaining a high conversion efficiency. Here we report on-chip SHG that simultaneously achieves a large tunability and a high conversion efficiency inside a single device. We utilize the unique strong thermo-optic birefringence of LN to achieve flexible temperature tuning of type-I inter-modal phase matching. We experimentally demonstrate spectral tuning with a tuning slope of 0.84 nm/K for a telecom-band pump, and a nonlinear conversion efficiency of 4.7% W$^{-1}$, in a LN nanophotonic waveguide only 8~mm long. Our device shows great promise for efficient on-chip wavelength conversion to produce highly-tunable coherent visible light for broad applications, while taking advantage of the mature and cost-effective telecom laser technology.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics has generated a wide range of applications in the fields of optical communications, biomedicine, and materials science, with nonlinear conversion efficiency serving as a vital metric for its progress. However, the weak nonlinear response of materials, high optical loss, and inhomogeneous distribution of the light field hamper the improvement of the conversion efficiency. We present a composite grating waveguide structure integrated into a Bragg reflector platform. This design achieves high Q in the spectral range by exploiting the unique properties exhibited by the bound states in the Bloch surface wave-enhanced continuum, and efficient second-harmonic generation by close-field amplification with the optical field tightly localized in a nonlinear material. By manipulating the symmetry of the grating, a precise tune over the near field within a designated wavelength range can be achieved. Specifically, we select a photonic crystal configuration supporting surface waves, employing TE polarization conditions and an asymmetry factor of −0.1 between the composite gratings. This configuration resonates at a fundamental wavelength of 783.5 nm, exhibiting an impressive Q -factor of 10 6 . Notably, at an incident light intensity of 1.33 GW/cm 2 , we achieve a normalized electric field strength of up to 940 at the fundamental frequency and a second-harmonic conversion efficiency of up to 6 × 10 −3 , significantly amplifying the second-harmonic response. The proposed configuration in this investigation has the potential to be integrated into the field of nonlinear optics for sensing frequency conversion applications.

Abstract:Integrated thin-film lithium niobate platform has recently emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation, high-efficiency wavelength conversion systems that allow dense packaging and mass-production. Here we demonstrate efficient, phase-matched second harmonic generation in lithographically-defined thin-film lithium niobate waveguides with sub-micron dimensions. Both modal phase matching in fixed-width waveguides and quasi-phase matching in periodically grooved waveguides are theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Our low-loss (~ 3.0 dB/cm) nanowaveguides possess normalized conversion efficiencies as high as 41% W-1cm-2.

Abstract:Integrated photonics provides unprecedented opportunities to pursue advanced nonlinear light sources with low-power consumptions and small footprints in a scalable manner, such as microcombs, chip-scale optical parametric oscillators and integrated quantum light sources. Among a variety of nonlinear optical processes, high-efficiency second harmonic generation (SHG) on-chip is particularly appealing and yet challenging. In this work, we present efficient SHG in highly engineerable semi-nonlinear waveguides consisting of electron-beam resist waveguides and thin-film silicon nitride (SiN)/lithium niobate (LN). By carefully designing octave-separating bound states in the continuum (BICs) for the nonlinear interacting waves in such a hybrid structure, we have simultaneously optimized the losses for both fundamental frequency (FF) and second harmonic (SH) waves and achieved modal phasing matching and maximized the nonlinear modal overlap between the FF and SH waves, which results in an experimental conversion efficiency up to 4.05% W −1 cm −2 . Our work provides a versatile and fabrication-friendly platform to explore on-chip nonlinear optical processes with high efficiency in the context of nanophotonics and quantum optics.
Fano Resonance on Nanostructured Lithium Niobate for Highly Efficient and Tunable Second Harmonic Generation

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) is an important nonlinear process which is critical for applications, such as optical integrated circuit, nonlinear microscopy, laser, etc. Many challenges remain in the improvement of nonlinear conversion efficiency, since the typical value is of only 10-5 in nanostructures. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a periodic structure consisting of a lithium niobate (LN) bar and an LN disk, on a nanoscale (~300 nm) thin-film platform, which is proposed for a highly efficient SHG. By breaking the structure symmetry, a Fano resonance with a high Q, up to 2350 and a strong optical field enhancement reaching forty-two folds is achieved, which yields a high conversion efficiency, up to 3.165 × 10-4. In addition to its strong second harmonic (SH) signal, we also demonstrate that by applying only 0.444 V on the planar electrode configurations of the nanostructured LN, the wavelength of SH can be tuned within a 1 nm range, while keeping its relatively high conversion efficiency. The proposed structure with the high nonlinear conversion efficiency can be potentially applied for a single-molecule fluorescence imaging, high-resolution nonlinear microscopy and active compact optical device.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report thermo-optic tunable and efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) based on an X-cut periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide. By applying an on-chip heater with thermo-isolation trenches and combining a type-0 quasi-phase matching mechanism, we experimentally achieve a high on-chip SHG conversion efficiency of 2500-3000% W-1 cm-2 and a large tuning power efficiency of 94 pm/mW inside a single 5-mm-long straight PPLN waveguide. Our design is for energy-efficient, high-performance nonlinear applications, such as wavelength conversion, highly tunable coherent light sources, and photon-pair generation.
Efficient Second Harmonic Generation in a Reverse‐Polarization Dual‐Layer Crystalline Thin Film Nanophotonic Waveguide

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG), one of the most significant χ(2) nonlinear optical processes, plays a crucial role in a wide variety of optical and photonic applications. Designing various delicate schemes to achieve highly efficient SHG has become a long‐standing and challenging topic in nonlinear optics. Despite numerous success on SHG based on birefringent phase‐matching and quasi‐phase‐matching, so far, modal phase‐matching (MPM) for SHG in tightly light‐confined structures has still in its infancy. Here, a new scheme is proposed to realize efficient SHG via MPM by using a nanophotonic LiNbO3 thin‐film waveguide consists of two bonded layers with internally reversed polarizations. In such a dual‐layer ridge waveguide based on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), upon optical excitation at 1574.6 nm, SHG is observed at 787.3 nm with a high conversion efficiency of 5540% W−1 cm−2 experimentally. This work advances the understanding on modal phase‐matched SHG and other quadratic optical nonlinear processes, offering additional strategies for developing high‐performance nonlinear photonic devices in on‐chip platforms. A new scheme is proposed to realize efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) via modal phase matching by using a nanophotonic thin‐film LiNbO3 waveguide with internally bonded two layers of reverse polarization. The modulation of material polarization of the two bonded layers results in continuously enhanced SHG from fundamental to second harmonic light of diverse‐order modes in the nano‐waveguide. SHG is experimentally observed at 787.3 nm with a high conversion efficiency of 5540% W−1 cm−2.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a coherent nonlinear phenomenon that plays an important role in laser color conversion. Lithium niobate (LN), which features both a large band gap and outstanding second-order nonlinearities, acts as an important optical material for nonlinear frequency conversion covering a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Here we experimentally demonstrate LN metasurfaces with controllable SHG properties. Distinct enhancements for the SHG efficiency are observed at Mie-resonances. And by changing the geometric parameters thus the resonances of the metasurfaces, we manage to selectively boost the SHG efficiency at different wavelengths. Our results would pave a way for developing with high flexibility the novel compact nonlinear light sources for applications, such as biosensing and optical communications.

Abstract:Second-order nonlinearity gives rise to many distinctive physical phenomena, e.g., second-harmonic generation, which plays an important role in fundamental science and various applications. Lithium niobate, one of the most widely used nonlinear crystals, exhibits strong second-order nonlinear effects and electro-optic properties. However, its moderate refractive index and etching sidewall angle limit its capability in confining light into nanoscales, restricting its application in nanophotonics. Here, we exploit nanocavities formed by second-order circular Bragg gratings, which support resonant anapole modes to achieve highly enhanced SHG in thin film lithium niobate. The CBG nanocavity exhibits a record-high normalized conversion efficiency of $1.21\times10^{-2}\mathrm{cm^2/GW}$ under the pump intensity of $1.9$ $\mathrm{MW/cm^2}$. An SHG enhancement of $42,000$ is realized compared to TFLN. Besides, we also show s- and p-polarization independent SHG in elliptical Bragg nanocavities. This work could inspire studying nonlinear optics at the nanoscale on TFLN as well as other novel photonic platforms.
