Abstract:Fatigue cracking is one of the main diseases that affect pavement durability. Understanding the relationship between the self-healing ability and fatigue life of asphalt materials from the molecular level will aid in the preventive maintenance and improvement of asphalt pavement. This work analyzes the research progress on the self-healing of asphalt and asphalt mixtures, including self-healing mechanism, influencing factors, evaluation methods, and improvement aspects. Factors affecting the self-healing performance are categorized as internal, such as molecular structure, asphalt motion and diffusion, asphalt viscoelasticity, and thixotropy, and external, such as humidity, temperature, induction conditions, and time. The self-healing performance can be adjusted by optimizing the chemical composition of the asphalt materials, changing the preparation method, and ensuring the spontaneous structure formation to achieve the intellectualization of the intrinsic material. This work sheds light on the design of materials and structures for durable pavement from the perspective of the self-healing behavior of asphalt materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:It is now well recognised that microdamage healing may extend the fatigue life of asphalt pavement. In this study, a test was developed to quantify the healing of asphalt mixture, both dense-graded and open-graded, using the Superpave(TM) Indirect Tensile Test testing system. The healing test consists of repeated load damage tests (resilient modulus tests) during the damage phase followed by a healing phase during which resilient modulus tests are performed on a limited basis to measure modulus recovery (healing). Appropriate load level, as percentage of tensile strength, for the damage phase was found to depend on mixture brittleness index. A decrease in resilient modulus with an increasing number of load cycles is indicative of accumulation of microdamage during the damage phase. Recovery of resilient modulus during the healing phase is indicative of damage recovery or healing. Rate of healing was found to not be constant but rather changed with time at a decreasing rate for any given mixture. Therefore, a healing rate parameter was defined to allow for comparison between mixtures. Results showed that, in general, expected trends were observed. Mixtures tested at higher temperatures healed at a faster rate than those at lower temperatures and mixtures subjected to less oxidative ageing healed at faster rates than those subjected to more oxidative ageing.

Abstract:Self-healing is a biological phenomenon in which living organism responds to the suffered damage in a complex way. Inspired by the self-healing phenomenon in nature, various biomimetic healing methods rooted in intrinsic or extrinsic healing mechanisms have been explored. Research on novel self-healing asphalt materials with intelligent response is at the cutting-edge of materials science and offers a potential strategy for building long-life and low-carbon asphalt concrete infrastructure. This paper describes the progress of research on extrinsic self-healing asphalt materials and makes a clear distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic self-healing. The asphalt self-healing mechanism is interpreted by capillary flow theory, phase field theory, molecular diffusion theory and surface energy theory form various perspective. The extrinsic self-healing strategies including thermal induced healing and rejuvenator induced healing are proposed to enhance the healing level of cracked asphalt materials. A brief review of the methods including fracture-healing test and fatigue-healing test for assessing the efficacy of different extrinsic healing methods is presented. The thermal induced healing method bring high crack repair efficiency for asphalt concrete and the rejuvenator induced healing strategy not only improve the healing ratio of cracked asphalt concrete but also regenerate the ageing asphalt in situ. Important lessons for prospective research on the creation of novel self-healing asphalt materials are highlighted.

Mechanistic Modeling of Healing in Asphalt Mixtures Using Internal Stress

Abstract:Healing of a material refers to a process of the restoration of original material properties to a damaged material. There are currently phenomenological methods and mechanism-based methods to characterize healing in asphalt materials. The phenomenological methods are based on the change of some kind of material property due to healing. The mechanism-based methods describe healing as a combination of a wetting process and a diffusion process. In addition to these two types of models, the paper aims at presenting a mechanical view of the healing process and developing a mechanistic approach to model healing in asphalt mixtures.A new perspective of studying healing is proposed in this paper by relating it to the recovery of a material, based on which the mechanics of healing is well explained. The relationship between healing and recovery is clarified by defining the apparent recovery and true recovery. The apparent recovery of a bulk damaged material is driven by the apparent internal stress. The true recovery of the intact material is driven by the true internal stress. The apparent recovery involves two simultaneous processes: the true recovery and healing.By studying the energy redistribution around cracks during healing, it is found that the true internal stress and the interfacial force of attraction are the two driving forces for healing. Under their actions, the direct result of healing is the decrease of damage density as a result of the growth of the contact area between crack surfaces. The energy-based mechanistic (EBM) approach is used to conduct mechanical analysis on the healing process and model healing by the progression of damage density. The creep and step-loading recovery (CSR) test is utilized to measure the apparent and true internal stresses.By using the EBM approach to analyze the CSR test data, cracking is modeled in the creep phase of a CSR test, and healing is modeled in the recovery phase of the same CSR test. The analysis produces a damage density progression curve in the both phases. The initial damage when healing starts is represented by the damage density at the end of the creep phase; the damage at any time during the healing process is represented by the damage density in the recovery phase. The difference between the initial damage when healing starts and the damage at an arbitrary time point during recovery thus quantifies the extent of healing that occurs during this rest period. Abstract:Promotion of healing of asphalt mixtures is significant to enhance the resiliency and extend the service life of asphalt pavements. Extensive laboratory measurements of effects of healing and field observations have proven its impact. Many approaches have been developed to explain and model healing of asphalt mixtures based on its mechanisms and/or mechanical features. However, due to the complexity caused by the co-existence of several coordinated rate processes during healing, there are still unclear aspects in terms of mechanisms and appropriate representation of each rate process. Target this issue, this study proposes to investigate healing of asphalt mixtures using kinetic and thermodynamic quantities and formulations, aiming at clarifying the relationships among the coordinated processes involved in healing and developing an approach to predict the rate of each process. Healing is found to contain two coordinated rate processes: free energy change and bond restoration. Healing rate is proportional to the rates of these two processes, and the healing activation energy is the product of the activation energy of the free energy change and that of the bond restoration. In order to calculate each activation energy and rate constant, the recoverable strain energy (RSE) and recoverable pseudo strain energy (RPSE) measured in the rest time of a creep and step-loading recovery (CSR) test are used. The RPSE in the intact material and the surface energy constitute the total free energy change for healing. A three-parameter model is proposed to simulate a rate process like the change of the RSE or free energy change with time, and a dimensionless logarithmic rate is defined to obtain a representative change rate. This representative rate is ideal to be used as the rate constant in the Arrhenius equation to compute the activation energy. The activation energies for viscoelastic recovery, healing, free energy change, and bond restoration are determined for two types of asphalt mixtures at unaged and aged states. The relations between different activation energies are clarified so as the relationships among different rate processes. Furthermore, the healing activation energy obtained from this kinetic approach is proven to be the same as that calculated using the damage density from a mechanistic approach. A method to generate a damage density-based healing curve at any rest time at any temperature using just energy measurements is proposed in this study. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Healing of asphalt mixtures has been proven to be significant, and different approaches exist to characterize it, such as the phenomenological methods, mechanism-based, and mechanics-based methods. To target the actual causal relationship for healing in asphalt mixtures, a new test called the creep and step-loading recovery (CSR) test, along with a new mechanistic method termed the energy-based mechanistic (EBM) approach, was previously developed by the authors. This paper aimed at examining the applicability of the CSR test with the EBM approach in characterizing healing of asphalt mixtures. A variety of asphalt mixtures were selected and subjected to the CSR test in this study. The internal stress measured by the CSR test was used in the EBM approach to generate a damage density progression curve, which directly reflected how the damage developed and healed in the tested material. Based on this curve, the normalized extent of healing was defined as a direct measure of healing, and the healing curve (the normalized extent of healing versus the rest time) was defined as a straightforward tool to qualitatively evaluate the healing ability of asphalt mixtures. To further achieve a quantitative description of the healing ability, a healing model based on the Ramberg-Osgood equation was developed to simulate the healing curve. The parameters in the healing model represent the healing speed at different stages of healing (the initial healing rate and ultimate healing rate) and the overall ability of the material to heal (the healing scale). Both the healing curves and healing parameters can discern the difference in the healing ability caused by the air void content, aging, temperature, and the type of asphalt binder. In other words, the CSR test, along with the EBM approach, was able to produce a reasonable and consistent prediction of healing for asphalt mixtures.

Abstract:Asphalt mixtures are frequently used for highway pavements, with fatigue damage occurring over time. Although numerous fatigue damage models have been proposed in academia, none account for the influence of asphalt mixtures' self-healing characteristics on their fatigue processes. The present paper examines the self-healing effect of multi-factor asphalt mixtures on the fatigue process from a mechanical perspective. The original model is revised, and the influence of the correction coefficient is introduced, leading to the proposal of a fatigue model of asphalt mixtures that considers multi-factor self-healing effects. The model's accuracy is verified through four-point bending fatigue tests on various grades of asphalt mixtures. The findings demonstrate that the self-healing properties of asphalt blends have a distinct positive impact on fatigue progression and endurance when considering temperature, strain strength, initial damage rate, and healing time. Furthermore, after experimental validation and model analysis, the adjusted model, which includes the self-healing effect, provides a more precise account of the fatigue life of asphalt blends. Furthermore, the experimental analysis yielded the performance characteristics of asphalt mixtures with varying coarse and fine aggregate gradations.

Healing Kinetics of Asphalt Binder Based on a New Testing Approach

Abstract:Self-healing capability is one of the most important characteristics of asphalt binder, which has a significant influence on field performance of asphalt pavements. Although the internal stress has been proven to be the driving force of healing, limited studies have been conducted for this part. As a result, this study aims at proposing a new approach to measure the internal stress and quantify the relationship between healing capability and damage levels of asphalt binder from its causal relationship based on healing kinetics. Specifically, a new approach called creep and zero-strain-rate recovery (CZSR) test to measure the internal stress is proposed. The accuracy of this new approach is verified in both undamaged and damaged asphalt binder. Then, the application of this new approach is expanded from creep-recovery condition to multiple-cyclic-loading-recovery condition. This action not only expands the application fields of this proposed new approach, but also provides a bridge to evaluate the relationship between healing capability and damage levels from its causal relationship. After that, the healing-kinetics method is used to characterize the healing capability of asphalt binder under different damage levels on the basis of energy-based mechanistic (EBM) approach. Moreover, the healing capability and damage level of asphalt binder are expressed as healing activation energy and crack length, respectively. Final results indicate that the healing activation energy increases with the growth of crack length, and there is a negative relationship between healing capability and damage levels of asphalt binder.

Abstract:Owing to their self-healing ability, asphalt mixtures have great potential for improving the service life of asphalt pavement, and can play an important role in sustainable infrastructures. In this study, a semicircular bending damage-healing-fracture experiment was conducted to evaluate the healing effect of a 90# asphalt mixture and styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer modified asphalt mixture. The digital image correlation technique was used to synchronously observe the semicircular specimen to analyze its surface displacement and strain changes during the healing process. The experimental results showed that, on the macroscopic scale, the healing index HIFE based on fracture energy density was recommended to evaluate the healing effect of asphalt mixtures, and the healing effect of the 90# asphalt mixture was better than that of the styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer modified asphalt mixture. On the mesoscopic scale, the horizontal displacements of the notch of the specimen position gradually recovered under self-healing conditions. The strain concentration at the crack gradually weakened, and the strain degree in the non-cracked area of the specimen also decreased gradually under self-healing conditions. The recovery of the macromechanics of the specimen is related not only to the healing of the crack area but also to the recovery of the non-cracked area.

Influencing Factors and Evaluation of the Self-Healing Behavior of Asphalt Binder Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation Method

Abstract:In order to investigate the self-healing behavior of asphalt binder at the molecule scale, the self-healing models of neat and aged asphalt binder with different damage degrees were established by introducing a vacuum pad between two layers filled with asphalt molecules. With this model, the self-healing process was simulated at various healing conditions to reveal the effects of oxidative aging, damage degree and healing temperature on the self-healing property. In addition, self-healing efficiency was evaluated using the indexes representative of the characteristics of different self-healing stages. Our results show that the oxidative aging weakened the stacked structure of the asphalt binder and increased the healing activation energy barrier. The increasing damage degree extended the distance for particles to travel, thus prolonging the time required for the crack interfaces contacting with each other. The elevated temperature improved the molecular mobility by supplying more energy to the molecular system. Furthermore, the self-healing process was evaluated quantitatively by the density variation at the crack closing stage and the diffusion coefficient at the intrinsic healing stage. The duration of each stage was influenced by the oxidative aging, damage degree and healing temperature. The findings in this paper are helpful to reveal and evaluate the self-healing property of asphalt binder.

Abstract:Inspired by self-healing attributes, one of the key topics in the field of pavement engineering is changing the way that asphalt materials behave for prolonged service life and environmental savings. Extensive experimental approaches, models and technologies have been developed to characterize the evolution of healing influenced by internal and external factors. The purpose of this study is to explore the local kinetics of asphalt binders that energetically favor autonomous self-healing as well as its mechanism using free energy method. With consideration of driving forces including internal stress and interfacial forces of attraction (or surface energy) responsible for energy redistribution during the rest period, the healing of an asphalt binder was first modeled as a function of thermodynamic parameters. New healing indexes were then defined by the total free energy change for healing ( ΔGH ) and fast-rate response ratio ( RH ) of initial healing in duration to the total rest time. Thirdly, a fatigue-healing test was performed on #70 asphalt binder and SBS-modified asphalt binder to examine the potential and reactivity of healing affected by different damage levels. Finally, the effectiveness of proposed thermodynamic healing indexes in describing healing ability was discussed by considering their relations with properties measured by mechanical analysis. Results show that more negative ΔGH indicates a greater tendency to spontaneous healing while less negative ΔGH suggests a poor healing potential as crack propagates to a certain length. In contrast to #70 asphalt binder, SBS-modified asphalt binder exhibits a superior healing potential on a shorter crack length scale. RH gradually increases with the increase of crack length for both #70 asphalt binder and SBS-modified asphalt binder, implying limited mobility of molecules. By contrast with mechanistic healing indexes assessing properties before and after healing (i.e. the degree of healing), the thermodynamic healing indexes provide a new vision regarding healing potential, which reveals the true ability of a material to autonomously repair damaged areas.

Smart Self-Healing Capability of Asphalt Material Using Bionic Microvascular Containing Oily Rejuvenator

Abstract:It has become one of the research directions of intelligent materials for self-healing asphalt pavements to use a bionic microvascular containing oily rejuvenator. The rejuvenator in a microvascular can carry out the healing of asphalt micro-cracks, thus reducing the damage to and prolonging the life of asphalt pavement. The aim of this work was to investigate the smart self-healing capability of an asphalt/microvascular material through its microstructure and mechanical properties. Microstructure observation indicated no interface separation between the microvasculars and bitumen matrix. Micro-CT images showed that microvasculars dispersed in asphalt samples without accumulation or tangles. The phenomenon of microcracks healing without intervention was observed, which proved that the fractured asphalt sample carried out the self-healing process with the help of rejuvenator diffusing out from the broken microvasculars. The self-healing efficiency of asphalt samples was also evaluated through a tensile test considering the factors of microvasculars content, healing time and healing temperature. It was found that the tensile strength of the asphalt samples was greatly enhanced by the addition of microvasculars under a set test condition. Self-healing efficiency was enhanced with more broken microvasculars in the rupture interface of the asphalt sample. During two self-healing cycles, the self-healing efficiency of the asphalt sample with three microvascular per 1 cm2 of a broken interface were able to reach 80% and 86%. This proves that microvasculars containing rejuvenator play a practical role in the self-healing process of asphalt. With an increase in temperature from 0 to 30 °C, the self-healing capability of the asphalt samples increased dramatically. An increase in time increased the self-healing capability of the bitumen samples. At last, a preliminary mathematical model also deduced that the self-healing efficiency was determined by the individual healing steps, including release, penetration and diffusion of the rejuvenator agent.

Abstract:The self-healing mechanism of styrene–butadiene-styrene modified asphalt (SBSMA) differs significantly from pure asphalt due to the combined effects of the base asphalt, polymer, and cross-linking network. This study investigates the self-healing performance of SBSMAs using fatigue-healing-fatigue (FHF) tests and microstructural characterisation, and examines the impact of weathering on healing efficiency. Results show that SBSMA self-healing ability increases linearly with the saturated and aromatic fractions of the base asphalt. The promoting effect of modifiers on self-healing capabilities follows the order: linear 20/80 > radial 30/70 > linear 40/60 > linear 30/70. The healing index (HI) of the base asphalt correlates with the molecular chain structure index (MMHC); however, this correlation is weaker for SBSMA. Aging reduces the self-healing efficiency of pure asphalt exponentially, while SBSMA initially increases and then declines, followed by an exponential decline during prolonged aging. Activation energy for healing in various SBSMA formulations was calculated, enabling the development of a predictive atlas for healing capabilities based on material composition and weathering conditions, with accuracy exceeding 85%. This study facilitates the design of durable pavement materials, improves pavement life predictions, and guide timely maintenance and repairs.

A Multistage Analysis of Asphalt Binder Nanocrack Generation and Self-Healing Behavior Based on Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:In order to study the characteristics and laws of nanocrack generation and self-healing behavior of asphalt materials under tensile action, the molecular dynamics (MD) method was used to simulate the continuous "tensile failure—self-healing" process, and this study remedies the shortcomings of existing experimental and observational methods. It is found that the MD-reproduced formation process of asphalt binder nanocrack contains four stages: "tensile extension", "nanocrack generation", "crack adding, expanding and penetrating" and "cracking failure". The influence of tensile conditions on the tensile cracking simulation of an asphalt binder model was analyzed, and it was found that low temperature and high loading rate would increase the tensile strength of the asphalt binder model. In addition, the MD-reproduced healing process of asphalt binder nanocracks can be divided into four stages: "surface approach", "surface rearrangement", "surface wetting" and "diffusion", which is similar to the healing process of polymers. Finally, from the perspective of energy change, the change rule of dominant van der Waals energy in the self-healing process was studied. Based on the existing research, the influence of damage degree on the healing performance of asphalt binder and its mechanism were further analyzed. The research results further enrich the theoretical research on microlevel cracking and healing of asphalt materials, and have certain theoretical value for the further development of self-healing asphalt materials.

Abstract:Crack healing has been a key area of asphalt pavement research. In this review, different crack-healing theories and crack-healing evaluation methods in bitumen and asphalt mixtures are summarized and presented. Then different crack healing technologies have highlighted the problems and solutions associated with their implementation. Detailly, traditional technologies (hot pouring and fog seal) are introduced. They mainly fill cracks from the outside, which can effectively prevent further damage to the asphalt pavement, when the cracks have generally developed to the middle and late stages of practical engineering. Their extension of the life of the asphalt pavement is relatively limited. Energy supply technologies (induction and microwave heating) have demonstrated significant efficacy in enhancing the crack healing capability of asphalt pavement, particularly in microcracks. Now, Extensive laboratory testing and some field test sections have been conducted and they are waiting for the promotion from the industry. The agents encapsulated technologies (Saturated porous aggregates encapsulate rejuvenators, Core-shell polymeric microcapsules, Ca-alginate capsule, Hollow fibers and Compartment fibers) not only heal cracks but rejuvenate the aged asphalt pavement. In order to promote industrial application, more field test sections and large industrial mixing and compaction equipment applications need to be implemented. Finally, some other potential crack healing techniques (coupling application, electrical conductivity, 3D printing, and modifications) are also mentioned.

In this paper, a molecular model of modified asphalt microcracks was created by introducing modifier molecules into the virgin asphalt model, and the self-healing process of the asphalt microcrack model under different healing conditions was investigated, which revealed the effects of modifier materials and healing temperatures on the healing performance of asphalt. The results show that the effect of healing temperature on asphalt healing performance is more significant than the modifier material, the relative concentration of molecules at the microcrack healing and the healing temperature is positively correlated; asphalt material healing free volume fraction with the increase in healing temperature gradually increases, the incorporation of modifiers can reduce the free volume fraction growth caused by high-temperature healing, improve the healing stability of modified asphalt. The asphalt ductility specimen crack healing test shows that when the healing temperature exceeds 45 ℃, there is a decreased increase in self-healing rate; taking into account the high-temperature healing is easy to make the asphalt material produce permanent deformation, this paper determines the optimal healing temperature in the vicinity of 48 ℃. The research results have certain reference and application values for asphalt pavement damage repair.

Investigating Rheological and Healing Properties of Asphalt Binder Modified by Disulfide-Crosslinked Poly(urea-Urethane) Elastomer

Abstract:The deployment of self-healing materials to asphalt can increase the service life of the asphalt pavement. This study proposed a novel self-healing asphalt binder modified by the polyurethane elastomer containing disulfide bonds. Micro-chemical characterization, rheological tests, fatigue-healing-fatigue test, and fracture-healing -fracture test were used to evaluate the rheological and healing properties of disulfide-crosslinked poly(urea-urethane) elastomer modified asphalt binder. Micro-chemical analysis shows the poly(urea-urethane) elastomer containing disulfide bonds was stably introduced to the asphalt binder and dispersed regularly. Rheological analysis indicates positive effects of poly(urea-urethane) elastomers in the rutting resistance at high temperatures and cracking resistance at low temperatures of asphalt binder, which enhanced by maximum 66% and 65% with the addition of 4% and 6% poly(urea-urethane) elastomer, respectively. Fatigue-healing-fatigue test and the fracture-healing-fracture test shows that the polyurethane elastomer significantly enhances the healing capability of asphalt binder, especially at the early healing stage. Results of the healing tests suggest that 6% is recom-mended as the optimum dosage of poly(urea-urethane) elastomer for self-healing asphalt due to its sound healing effects for fatigue cracking and macroscopic cracks. This study provides a comprehensive investigation on the rheological and healing properties of self-healing asphalt binder based on dynamic chemistry.

Abstract:Introduction. Presently, there exists no unified methodology that could control self-healing properties of materials due to the lack of criteria characterizing the ability of materials to respond to impacts and to cope with adverse effects produced on their properties or structure. All assessment methods applied to self-healing properties of materials are reduced to the calculation of the ratio of relative changes in the value of parameters to be measured. A “self-healing” material is a material capable of initiating liquidation of structural defects, so that the rate of this process could exceed the one of spontaneous propagation of defects, while the resistance of the new structure to operating loads is not lower than the initial one. Development of solutions, capable of implementing this principle, will ensure longer service lives of materials. Materials and methods. A set of general methods of logical research was applied. These methods are based on the theoretical analysis of process solutions presented in professional editions, information resources maintained by their developers and in mass media, patents, research articles and reports. Results. The self-healing technology is applicable to asphalt concrete with regard for its structural features and thermoplastic properties. Self-healing means restoration of the structural integrity of physical and chemical bonds by moistening crack surfaces, diffusion of molecules between them, and arbitrary dissipation of molecules to ensure reinforcement. Self-healing process uniformity is attainable by applying the technology of functional agent encapsulation so that it could be added to the mix along with other components at the stage of the asphalt concrete mix preparation. Conclusions. Existing technological solutions can generate capsules that contain the recovery agent in the amount of up to 90...94 % of the total volume. General requirements and quality standards that apply to self-healing materials, used in construction, must be developed to identify their efficiency depending on application conditions. Provisions of the adhesion theory can be applied to the self-healing technology in the course of its implementation. Comprehensive Self-Healing Evaluation of Asphalt Concrete Containing Encapsulated Rejuvenator

Abstract:Ultraviolet radiation, oxidation, temperature, moisture, and traffic loads produce degradation and brittleness in the asphalt pavement. Microcracks develop into macrocracks, which eventually lead to pavement failure. Although asphalt has an inherent capacity for self-healing, it is constricted. As a result, damages build beyond the ability of asphalt to repair themselves. This research employs the in-situ crack healing method of encapsulated rejuvenator technology to enhance the insufficient self-healing capability of roads. This allows the extrinsically induced healing in asphalt to assist it in recovering from damage sustained during service life. Optical microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and the compressive load test of capsules were done to characterise their properties. We measured the self-healing behaviour of encapsulated rejuvenator-induced asphalt utilising the three-point bending beam tests on unaged, short-term aged and long-term aged asphalt beams. The rate of oil release before and after healing was quantified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results of these tests were utilised to explain the link between healing time, temperature, asphalt ageing, and healing level. Overall, it was determined that the encapsulated rejuvenator was acceptable for mending asphalt mixes because it increased healing temperature and duration, resulting in an up to 80% healing index.

Abstract:To evaluate and compare the self-healing properties of asphalt with different nano-montmorillonite (MMT) additions and from explaining the self-healing mechanism, the self-healing properties of base asphalt and Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) modified asphalt with different MMT additions were tested using accompanying rest-time Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) time-sweep test. Brookfield rotational viscosity test, sweeping electron microscope test, sessile drop test, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test, and gel permeation chromatography test were used to analyze the self-healing mechanism of the asphalt binder. Then, these indexes were correlated with the self-healing performance. The results showed that there were significant differences between the self-healing performance of base asphalt and SBS-modified asphalt binder. The intercalation structure formed by MMT in the binder increased the content of methylene and macromolecules, and increased the viscosity and surface free energy of the binder, thus increasing the active healing performance.
