Abstract:Nanomaterials could promote cement hydration that leads to better strength development, but their impacts on early shrinkage (up to 72 h) are rarely comprehensively researched. This study aims to investigate the effects of nano-CaCO3 (NC) on early shrinkage and the tensile properties of cement paste, which contains various contents of NC. Before the shrinkage modeling, early shrinkage, water losses, bound water contents (BWC) and pore size distributions (PSD) of cement paste were obtained first. In addition, the tensile strength and tensile strain capacity of the samples were also measured. Results show that the addition of NC increased early total/autogenous shrinkage of cement paste, but revealed different impacts on drying shrinkage. Meanwhile, a parameter rs calculated from PSD and water losses was proposed, and greater drying shrinkage of cement paste was seen with the reduction of rs. Further, a quantitative relationship between rs and early drying shrinkage was built based on experimental results and the theoretical derivation, and a total shrinkage model for 1-day was also built relied on rs as well as the relationship between BWC and autogenous shrinkage. Finally, the use of NC may slightly enhance the tensile properties of cement paste, but it may also raise its cracking risk due to its greater early total shrinkage as measured.

Abstract:It is generally accepted that composites with thinner fillers would show more refined pore structure, so currently the uses of nano materials including nano graphene-based additives (NGAs) to fabricate functional cement composites are quite popular. However, the effects of NGAs on the pore structure of cement composites are far from being fully understood. In this work, we investigated the pore structure of cement composites blended with graphene oxides (GOs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), which show the similarly layered structure but different sizes and chemico-physical properties. Results reveal that both GOs and GNPs do not significantly alter the hydration products of cement. Both GOs and GNPs can make the material matrix denser by depressing the meso pores; and GOs tend to coarsen the macro pores due to the laminar agglomerations. The findings of this study help better tailor the pore structure of cement composites with NGAs for future materials design and manufacture.

Abstract:Abstract Filling and nucleation are the mechanisms of modifying cement paste with nanomaterials, as investigated by previous studies, and are difficult to reflect the different effects of nanomaterials, especially on the changes of cement clinker and hydration products in the cement hydration process. In this study, the mechanisms of modifying cement paste with nano-calcium carbonate (NC), nano-graphene oxide (NG), nano-silica (NS), and nano-titanium dioxide (NT) were investigated by determining the mechanical properties of cement paste treated with nanomaterials and analysing the changes in the cement clinker (tricalcium silicate and dicalcium silicate), hydration products (portlandite and ettringite), and microstructure through many micro-test methods. The results indicate that the incorporation of nanomaterials could improve the early strength of cement paste specimens due to more consumption of cement clinker. Meanwhile, different nanomaterials promote the formation of different hydration products at early ages. C–A–S–H gel, flower-like ettringite, and C–S–H seeds are widely distributed in the cement paste with the incorporation of NC, NG, and NS, respectively. NT exhibits insignificant nucleation effect and has inhibitory effect on portlandite precipitation. This study provides key insights into the mechanism of nanomaterials from the perspective of cement hydration, which may promote the further research and application of nanomaterials in the cement and concrete industries.

Method for preparing nano modifier for cement-base material

Abstract:The invention discloses a method for preparing cement based material used nano modifier, which comprises the following steps: nano calcium carbonate emulsion is generated by a carbonation reactor. The nano calcium carbonate emulsion turns into a nano calcium carbonate paste with a water content of 40 percent to 60 percent after carrying out a dewater treatment. The mineral powder and the nano calcium carbonate paste are mixed in a weight ratio of 2 to 4 and are dried and grinded for 1 to 2 hours. The method for preparing cement based material used nano modifier has a simple preparation process. The prepared cement based material used in the nano modifier dose not comprise warping agent. The nano modifier is incorporated into the cement based material for using, thus avoiding the disadvantageous impact to the dispersion and mechanical property of the cement based material by the nano modifier. The composite additive effect between the nano calcium carbonate paste and the active mineral powder can solve the problem that the nano calcium carbonate paste has high water content ratio and the concrete mixed with the nano calcium carbonate has a slow growth in the late period. Besides, the crystal nucleus of nano calcium carbonate and filling effect can be further improved, thus effectively improving the mechanical property and durability of the concrete.
Research on the Permeability and Pore Structure Distribution Characteristics of High-Performance Mortar for Surface Treatment of Bridge Piers and Columns

Abstract:In marine environments, bridge piers and columns are prone to corrosion caused by harmful media, particularly chloride ions. This corrosion can lead to cracking of the steel bars in the protective layer of the bridge piers. To enhance the corrosion resistance of concrete in bridge piers, this article introduces the use of nanoclay-modified cement mortar. This innovative material offers high-performance surface treatment options that can effectively slow down the erosion process of harmful media and reduce the risk of bridge pier column cracking. To evaluate the ion erosion resistance of this nanoclay-modified cement mortar, we conducted detailed experiments on the pore structure of cement paste. The pore structure of cement paste with different dosages of nano-kaolinite clay and the dispersion method was studied using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The fractal dimension of the pore surface area of the net cement paste was calculated from the fractal model based on thermodynamic relationships of the pore structure-related parameters obtained with mercury pressure experiments. The relationship among the multiple fractal dimensions, pore structure parameters, dispersion mode, and permeability is explored. The results show that the addition of nano-kaolinite clay particles can improve the internal pore structure of cement materials. When 1.5% nano-kaolinite clay is mechanical dispersed, the total specific pore volume and the most probable pore size are reduced by 47.83% and 56.87%, respectively, compared with the control group. The fractal dimension image of cement-based materials with nano-kaolinite clay has a range of singular points and does not have fractal characteristics in this range. Nano-kaolinite clay has a significant effect on the fractal dimension of pore size range I. The fractal dimension of the whole pore size range is not suitable for the analysis of permeability, and the fractal dimension calculated by selecting less than the critical pore size range has a good correlation with permeability.

Abstract:In-situ polymerization of polymers with cement can greatly improve the engineering performances of cementitious composites, the structural mechanisms, however, remain still not fully established. Herein in-situ polymerization modified cementitious composites (iPMCC) with sodium acrylate (SA) in different dosages (0%, 4% and 8%) were fabricated. Flowability, strength, deformability, and water sorptivity of the iPMCCs were tested, and the multi-scale structures in terms of pore size distribution, microscopic morphology, chemical characteristics, and solid structure of calcium-silicate (-aluminate)-hydrates were characterized. Results demonstrate that, compared with neat cement paste, the iPMCC with 4% SA showed the improvement of flowability by 35.1%, the increases of flexural and compressive strength by 109.0% and 11.8%, the rises of flexural and compressive deformation energy by 458.8% and 161.0%, and the decrease of water sorptivity by 19.1%. The in-situ SA polymerizations lead to substantial pore refinement, but macro defects in the iPMCC with 8% SA. Cross-linked sodium polyacrylate networks formed in the cement matrix and interacted with the cement hydrates, accounting for the improved strength, deformability, and water resistance. Cement hydration depression by polymers was evidently supported by the NMR data. The findings would deepen the understandings of multi-scale structure of cementitious composites with polymers, enabling development of highly ductile and durable construction materials.

Abstract:As promising next-generation conducting materials, Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) have been widely used to enhance the mechanical and pressure-sensitive properties of cement-based materials. However, this beneficial effect highly depended on its dispersion. In this study, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant, high-speed shear, and ultrasonication were used to disperse GNPs. To fully exert the mechanical and pressure-sensitive properties and enhance the dispersion effect of GNPs in cement-based materials, the dispersing method parameters, including PVP concentration, ultrasonication time, shear time, and rate, were optimized. The dispersion degree of GNPs was evaluated by absorbance. The results show that the optimal dispersion parameters were 10 mg/mL of PVP concentration, 15 min of ultrasonication time, 15 min of shear time, and 8000 revolutions per minute (rpm) of shear rate. In addition, the effect of GNPs dosage (0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 wt%) on the setting time, flowability, and mechanical and pressure-sensitive properties of cement mortar were examined. Results reveal that the optimum dosage of GNPs was found at 1.0 wt%.

Abstract:Nano-materials modified cement-based materials have attracted wide attention due to their advantages of improving strength and durability. In this paper, the effect of nano-SiO2 (NS) with particle sizes of 15 and 50 nm on the mechanical properties and microstructure of cement paste was studied. The results showed that 50 nm NS provided a greater compressive strength than that of 15 nm NS, while 15 nm NS afforded a denser microstructure than that of 50 nm NS. A fluctuation in the compressive strength was revealed using a physicochemical reaction equation, and the microstructure was interpreted by a pore structure analysis. In addition, the orientation index of calcium hydroxide (CH) with 15 nm NS could be reduced significantly in the early stages (the early stages refer to the first three days from the maintaining of specimens) compared with when the 50 nm NS was used. The experimental results also showed that NS helped increase the mechanical strength of cement paste, advance the endothermic peak of CH, and refine the size of the CH crystals. The microstructural changes at different stages of cement paste with different particle sizes of NS were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry and differential thermal analysis. This study is expected to promote the research and application of nano-materials in the cement industry by clarifying the performance of NS with different particle sizes.

Abstract:Recent research indicates that graphene and graphene oxide nanoplatelets can enhance the "smartness" as well as improve the strength of cementitious materials due to their unique mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Despite the great advantages and promising potentials shown in the graphene-reinforced concrete, its application to real construction demands a deep understanding of the graphene's effects on concrete durability. To meet this need, this study is focused on studying the freeze/thaw performance and corrosion resistance of graphene-reinforced concrete. Different types of graphene and graphene oxide nanoplatelets, characterized by their size and oxidation, are used to cast mortar specimens for experimental investigation. The compressive strength, freeze/thaw performance, and corrosion resistance are recorded for each group and then compared with the benchmark samples containing no graphene nanoplatelets. To deepen the understanding of the graphene's effects on concrete, nano-scale characterization is further carried out for each group. The microstructure of the cement paste around the graphene nanoplatelets, with a focus on morphology and Young's modulus, is probed by using Atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that graphene nanoplatelets can significantly change the proportions of constituent phases in the cement paste, which can be directly correlated with the strength and corrosion resistance of graphene-reinforced concrete.
The acceleration effect of nano C-S-H-PCE on the microstructure formation and evolution at early age of cement paste

Abstract:To promote the rapid development of compressive strength of cementitious materials at early age, a novel kind of nano calcium-silicate-hydrate modified by polycarboxylate superplasticizer, called nano C-S-H-PCE, was adopted to manipulate the process of cement hydration and the microstructure evolution of cement paste during the early period, and various measurements were employed in the current study. The obtained results illustrated that the addition of nano C-S-H-PCE shortened the setting times and promoted significantly the development of early compressive strength of cement paste, implying that the microstructure formation and evolution of cement paste were accelerated by nano C-S-H-PCE during the early period. The conductivity of cement suspension increased obviously with the increase in nano C-S-H-PCE, indicating that the progress of ion dissolution from cement grains was stimulated by nano C-S-H-PCE, thus conducive to the rapid precipitation of cement hydration products, which were also validated by the results of chemically bound water and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) results showed that the pore size of cement paste was refined and the total porosity declined gradually with the incorporation of nano C-S-H-PCE at 12 h. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) presented that more cement hydration products, especially C-S-H gel, and much denser microstructure of cement paste were formed with the growth of nano C-S-H-PCE. The results obtained from MIP and FESEM were consistent with the fast evolution of microstructure. and the rapid growth of compressive strength at early age.

Abstract:Polymer nano-particles (PNPs) with particle size range of 29.4–52.7nm were synthesized via emulsion polymerization. The mini-cone tests were conducted to evaluate the dispersion capability of PNPs in fresh cement pastes (fcps). Interactions of PNPs with cement were studied by measurements of total organic carbon, zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy, calorimetry and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Results show that the prepared PNPs can be adsorbed on to cement surface and improve fluidity of fcps effectively. The addition of PNPs leads to lesser retardation effect on cement hydration than popularly used polycarboxylate superplasticizers and reduces pore connectivity of micro-pores in hardened cement pastes.
Micro-nano scale pore structure and fractal dimension of ultra-high performance cementitious composites modified with nanofillers

Abstract:The development of ultra-high performance cementitious composite (UHPCC) represents a significant advancement in the field of concrete science and technology, but insufficient hydration and high autogenous shrinkage relatively increase the pores inside UHPCC, in turn, affecting the macro-performance of UHPCC. This paper, initially, optimized the pore structure of UHPCC using different types and dimensions of nanofillers. Subsequently, the pore structure characteristics of nano-modified UHPCC were investigated by the mercury intrusion porosimeter method and fractal theory. Finally, the fluid permeability of nano-modified UHPCC was estimated by applying the Katz-Thompson equation. Experimental results showed that all incorporated nanofillers can refine the pore structure of UHPCC, but nanofillers with different types and dimensions have various effects on the pore structure of UHPCC. Specifically, CNTs, especially the thin-short one, can significantly reduce the porosity of UHPCC, whereas nanoparticles, especially nano-SiO 2 , are more conducive to refine the pore size. Among all nanofillers, nano-SiO 2 has the most obvious effect on pore structure, reducing the porosity, specific pore volume and most probable pore radius of UHPCC by 31.9%, 35.1% and 40.9%, respectively. Additionally, the pore size distribution of nano-modified UHPCC ranges from 10 −1 nm–10 5 nm, and the gel pores and fine capillary pores in the range of 3–50 nm account for more than 70% of the total pore content, confirming nanofillers incorporation can effectively weaken pore connectivity and induce pore distribution to concentrate at nanoscale. Fractal results indicated the provision of nanofillers reduces the structural heterogeneity of gel pores and fine capillary pores, and induces homogenization and densification of UHPCC matrix, in turn, decreasing the UHPCC fluid permeability by 15.7%–79.2%.

Abstract:The effect of composite nano-addition and water reducer on mechanics strength and microstructure Of cement paste was experimentally studied and compared with that of normal cement paste. The results showed that the mechanics properties at early age were increased when adding 5% nano-CaCO3 to cement paste. Compressive strength and anti-penetration performance of cement paste were increased and the shrinkage of concrete was decreased with the composite nano-addition composing of 2% nano-CaCO3 and 8% slag powder. The results of SEM showed the hydrated products of cement were more and the microstructure was more compact than that of normal cement paste.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as one of the ideal modifiers of cement materials, since CNTs can improve the mechanical properties of cement paste effectively. However, the interfacial interaction between CNTs and the cement matrix is weak. Moreover, it is difficult to disperse CNTs within cement paste. To overcome these shortages, in this study, CNTs were firstly dispersed into a styrene-acrylic emulsion (SAE). Then the homo-dispersion CNT/SAE emulsion was incorporated into cement paste. The effect of the CNT/SAE hybrid-system on the mechanical properties and microstructure of cement paste was studied. For purposes of comparison, the properties of cement paste mono incorporating CNTs or SAE are also investigated. The results show that CNT/SAE network films could be observed in cement paste by using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). These network films could bridge the cracks and refine the pores of a cement matrix. Infrared analysis and Raman spectroscopy show that the CNT/SAE hybrid modifier has stronger interfacial adhesion and better load transfer ability over the mono adding of CNTs and SAE emulsion. As a result, the hybrid addition of CNT/SAE significantly improved the flexural strength of cement paste. Especially, the addition of 0.1% CNTs and 15% SAE by mass of cement improved the 28-day flexural strength of cement paste by 21% and 25% as compared to the mono addition of CNTs or SAE, respectively.

Abstract:Utilization of recycled powder (RP) from construction and demolition wastes into construction projects would bring great economic and environmental benefits. In this research, RP was prepared from hardened cement paste by wet grinding (i.e. WGRP) in the laboratory, and an attempt to utilize these nano particles as an accelerator for facilitating Portland cement (PC) hydration was done. The basic properties of WGRP were characterized, and the effect of WGRP on the properties of PC was studied, including setting time, compressive strength, and permeability. Related mechanisms were discussed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Results showed that WGRP with median particle size (D50) of 249 nm was prepared. The addition of WGRP accelerated the setting process of PC pastes, and significantly augmented the early strength and impermeability of PC mortars. 4.0% WGRP shortened the final setting time by 175 min and increased the 12 h compressive strength by 180%. Due to the brilliant nucleation seed effect of WGRP, the release of PC hydration heat was greatly facilitated, and the inducing period almost disappeared; the formation of hydrates was accelerated, resulting in a higher hydration degree at the early age. Moreover, WGRP reduced the porosity of PC pastes and increased the harmless pore volume fraction. Such results suggested that WGRP expected to be utilized as an accelerator in PC.

Abstract:Materials for the conservation of cultural heritage must meet specific demands, such as high durability, service life, and compatibility with other materials used in the original building structures. Due to their low permeability to water and water vapor and their high rigidity, the use of Portland cement (PC) mortars, despite their high mechanical resistance and durability, does not represent an appropriate solution for the repair of historic masonry and structures. Their incompatibility with the original materials used in the past, often on a lime basis, is therefore a serious deficiency for their application. On the other hand, lime-based mortars, compared to PC-based materials, are more susceptible to mechanical stress, but they possess high porosity, a high water vapor transmission rate, and moderate liquid water transport. This study aims at the development of two types of lime-based mortars, calcium lime (CL) and hydraulic lime (HL). The modification of mortars was conducted with a carbon-based nanoadditive and graphene nanoplatelets (GNs) in three dosages: 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% of the binder weight. The enhancement of CL mortars by GNs greatly increased mechanical strength and affected heat transport characteristics, while other characteristics such as porosity, water absorption, and drying rate remained almost similar. The application of GNs to HL not only enhanced the strength of mortars but also decreased their porosity, influenced pore size distribution, and other dependent characteristics. It can be concluded that the use of graphene nanoplatelets as an additive of lime-based composites can be considered a promising method to reinforce and functionalize these composite materials. The improved mechanical resistance while maintaining other properties may be favorable in view of the increasing requirements of building materials and may prolong the life span of building constructions.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are potentially effective microstructural reinforcements for cementitious composites. Many properties of composites may change with the addition of nanoparticles. In this work, the workability, mechanical and microstructure properties of mortar containing four kinds of nanoparticles were evaluated, and these four kinds of nanoparticles were nano-Al2O3, nano-SiO2, nano-TiO2 and nano-ZnO respectively. Test results showed that the increasing addition of nano-SiO2 and nano-Al2O3 led to the increased water demand while nano-TiO2 and nano-ZnO had little effect on the mortar fluidity. With 3% (by weight of cement) nano-SiO2 particles, the 7 days flexural and compressive strength increased by 17.8% and 9.5% respectively. Nano-ZnO prolonged the setting time of mortar significantly, furthermore, the compressive strength was much lower than that of control specimen at early age. The influence of nanoparticles on the hydration degree, fluidity and mechanical properties of cementitious mixes were analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The Contribution of Nano-Alumina to Ultra-High-Performance Cement-Based Systems

Abstract:In the last decades, nano-silica (NS), nano-alumina (NA), and nano-calcium oxide (NC) particles have been incorporated into cementitious materials, and it seems that each one of them contributes uniquely to the materials' properties. This research explores the influence of each nanomaterial on the fresh properties of cement pastes and their compressive strength evolution over one year. Low proportions (1.5% by weight) of nanomaterials were added to cement pastes, and their fresh properties, such as heat of hydration and X-ray diffraction patterns in the first hours, were analyzed. The compressive strength and open porosity were also measured long-term. The acceleration of hydration heat in NA-cement pastes is linked to enhanced hydration product formation at early ages. Among the tested nanomaterials, NA increased compressive strength by 10% at later ages. Although the fresh properties of NC-cement pastes remained unaffected, their open porosity decreased by 54% at 28 days. In contrast, the increase in heat of hydration in NS-cement pastes did not result in significant strength improvement. Based on these findings, NA was selected for ultra-high-performance cement (UHPC)-based material use. Its incorporation not only preserved the ultra-high-performance (UHP) properties but also provided additional benefits such as an increase in compressive strength under a CO2 atmosphere. Through detailed analysis, this research establishes that nano-alumina incorporation optimizes the microstructural development and compressive strength of ultra-high-performance cement-based systems, presenting a novel advancement in enhancing the mechanical properties and durability of these materials under various environmental conditions.

Estimating the Impact of Nanophases on the Production of Green Cement with High Performance Properties

Abstract:Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) production is energy-intensive and significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. One method to reduce the environmental impact of concrete production is the use of an alternative binder, calcium sulfoaluminate cement, which offers lower CO2 emissions and reduces energy consumption for cement production. This article describes the effect of adding nanophases, namely belite, calcium sulfoaluminate, calcium aluminum monosulfate (β-C2S, C4A3S, and C4AS, respectively) on OPC's properties. These phases are made from nanosubstances such as nano-SiO2, calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2), and nano-aluminum hydroxide Al(OH)3 with gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O). The impact of β-C2S, C4A3S, and C4AS nanophases on the capabilities of cements was assessed by batch experimentations and IR, XRD, and DSC techniques. The results showed that the substituting of OPC by nano phases (either 10% C4A3S or 10% C4A3S and 10% β-C2S) reduced setting times, reduced the water/cement ratio and the free-lime contents, and increased the combined water contents as well as compressive strength of the cement pastes. The blends had high early and late compressive strength. The IR, XRD, and DSC analyses of the blends of 10% C4A3S or 10% C4A3S and 10% β-C2S cement displayed an increase in the hydrate products and the presence of monosulfate hydrate. The addition of 10% C4AS or 10% C4AS and 10% β-C2S to OPC reduced the setting times, decreased the W/C ratio, free lime, the bulk density, and increased the chemically-combined water and compressive strength. Overall, the results confirmed that the inclusion of the nanophases greatly enhanced the mechanical and durability properties of the OPCs.

Abstract:Chloride-induced corrosion in reinforced concrete is a primary durability issue that causes large economic loss every year. To improve the intrinsic chloride binding capacity and realize a favorable corrosion protection of cement-based materials are thus crucial to prolong the service life of concrete structures. Here, alumina nano particles (ANPs) were incorporated to improve the chloride binding capacity of cement pastes in chloride solutions and the anti-corrosion performance of mortars under accelerated corrosion process. The ANPs facilitated the formation of alumino-ferrite-mono (AFm)-type phases, thereby improved the content of chemically bound chlorides. Solution calcium (Ca) ions benefited the chloride captured by calcium-(alumino)silicate-hydrates (C-(A-)S–H) in the assistance of ANPs, especially at high initial chloride concentrations, and further evoked a pH-related chloride binding response. Moreover, the enhanced corrosion resistance was finally realized by incorporating appropriate amount of ANPs because of the filling and chemical effects induced low permeability of mortars. In general, the ANPs possess dual functions in the aspects of chloride binding and corrosion inhibition. These findings are expected to advance the design of high-durable cement-based materials serviced in the marine environment.
