Abstract:Unpredictable pandemics are likely to pose a significant global threat in the future, and biologically protective textiles will play critical roles in controlling the spread of pathogens during outbreaks. Herein, we present a novel metal–organic framework (MOF) composed of repeating units of a Cu(II)/(L-Cys)2 complex formed through coordination bonds between Cu(II) and L-Cys, while being interconnected by ionic bonds involving Cu(II) and the carboxylate group of L-Cys. After covalently embedding the MOF nanofibers onto cotton fiber surfaces, the resulting fabrics exhibit remarkable virucidal and antibacterial capabilities. Abstract:Cotton fabric plays an important role in the textile industry, but suffers from bacterial proliferation. The incorporation of naturally occurred phenols onto cotton fiber surfaces has the potential to yield powerful antibacterial effects, yet a simple and feasible method for their covalent grafting is currently lacking. In this study, we present a cleaning technique for preparing antibacterial cotton fabrics by using eugenol (Eug) and L-Cysteine (Cys) as finishing agents. The reactive carboxyl group of Cys is utilized to link Cys molecules onto cotton fibers via an esterification, followed by linking Eug molecules to the Cys moieties through thiol-ene click reaction. Simulated reactions validate the chemical mechanism of the thiol-ene click reaction between Eug and Cys, confirming its feasibility for various applications. Experimental results demonstrate that the modified fabrics achieve high bacteriostatic reduction rates (BR) against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It is inferred that the Eug moieties incorporated onto the cotton fibers furnish phenolic groups, which interact with saccharides and proteins to exert bactericidal effects. The resulting fabrics also display exceptional antibacterial durability, maintaining over 95 % antibacterial activity after enduring durability tests. Meanwhile, the original properties of the fabrics (strength, flexibility, etc.) are minimally affected by the modification process.
Durably Antibacterial Cotton Fabrics Coated by Protamine Via Schiff Base Linkages.

Abstract:The development of antibacterial cotton fabrics with an overall performance is critical but remains challenging. In this study, we propose a facile method to prepare durable antibacterial cotton fabric without significant sacrifices of wearing comfortability. Cotton fabric is firstly oxidated to obtain dialdehyde groups, then treated with PM molecules to establish a PM coating on the fiber surfaces via Schiff base linkages. The resultant cotton fabrics show durably antibacterial activity, realizing high bacterial reduction rates against both E. coli and S. aureus higher than 99.99 %, and offering remarkable durabilities tolerable 50 washing cycles and 500 rubbing times. These fabrics also show reliable safety for human skin that proofed by a series of cytotoxicity tests with positive results. This work demonstrates an example of versatile strategy to impart effective antibacterial function with durable activity to cotton textiles, showing great potential for practical applications in functional textile fields.
Highly Stable, Antiviral, Antibacterial Cotton Textiles Via Surface Engineering

Abstract:The unprecedented pandemic has highlighted the need for textiles that rapidly inactivate pathogens to protect public health. However, how to achieve rapid, effective and durable pathogen inactivation with the minimum antimicrobial dose loading has become a major challenge for cotton fabric modification. Here, a surface engineering cotton fabric (Co-CMC@Cu2+) was prepared by grafting carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) onto cotton fabric and then loading with Cu2+ via coordination. The Co-CMC@Cu2+ with minimal copper ion dosage achieved rapid inactivation, excellent comfort, good biosafety, and durability. Specifically, Co-CMC modified with 12.5 mmol/L copper ion solutions achieved impressive bacterial reduction (BR) rates of 94.3 % and 89.3 % against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, within 10 min of contact. Moreover, the bacteria were completely eradicated after 2 h of continuous contact. Additionally, Co-CMC@Cu2+ achieved excellent phage reduction (PR) rates of 98.9 % and 100 % against phi6 and phi-x174 bacteriophages, respectively, within 30 min of exposure, highlighting its potential for viral inactivation. Furthermore, Co-CMC@Cu2+ demonstrated exceptional durability for pathogen inactivation, with BR and PR values above 80 %, even after 150 washing cycles. This novel antimicrobial and antiviral cotton fabric will be a promising candidate textile to protect public health during a pandemic.
Excellent Binding Effect of L-Methionine for Immobilizing Silver Nanoparticles Onto Cotton Fabrics to Improve the Antibacterial Durability Against Washing

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have outstanding antimicrobial effects, but their weak adhesive force onto cotton fiber surfaces often causes undesired silver loss from antibacterial fabrics, diminishing antibacterial durability, and even leading to environmental and health risks. To improve adhesion of the Ag NPs, various strategies have been tried, but achieving long-term antibacterial effectiveness still remains challenging. Here, l-methionine is proposed as a binder reagent because it has low toxicity towards mammalian cells and has a methyl group to enhance its coordination ability. The antibacterial cotton fabric was fabricated via a very simple pad-dry-cure process: after dipping a cotton fabric in an l-methionine solution followed with heating for esterification, Ag NPs are formed via the reaction of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride. The resulting cotton fabric exhibits an excellent antibacterial property and laundering durability. Its bacterial reduction rates (BR) against both S. aureus and E. coli remained over 97% even after 90 consecutive laundering cycles. Moreover, the modification causes insignificant damage to cotton's characteristics, such as tensile breaking strength, water absorptivity, and vapor permeability.

Abstract:Fabrics have been used broadly in daily life for an enormous variety of applications due to their intrinsic advantages, such as flexibility, renewability, and good processability. Integrating natural fabrics with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective strategy to improve the added value of textiles with special functionalities. Here, a facile, low-cost, and scalable technology is reported for the in situ growth of MOFs on cotton fabrics. A uniform and dense coating of regular octahedral Cu-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (CuBTC) crystals was formed on the fiber surface, followed by treatment with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane and triethoxyoctylsilane to create a superhydrophobic CuBTC@cotton fabric (SMCF), which greatly improved its water stability and extended superhydrophobic CuBTC's potential applications. The as-prepared MCF has a specific surface area of 229 m2/g, which is 11 times that of pristine fabrics (21 m2/g). This high porosity further endows the fabric with enhanced loading capacity of essential oils to enable excellent antibacterial ability. Moreover, the SMCF also exhibits excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and anti-icing performances. In addition, we performed COMSOL simulations to investigate the dynamic freezing process of water on the surface of samples, which agrees well with our experimental observations. By combining the merits of both fabrics and MOFs, the MCF is expected to extend the applications of traditional textiles in antifouling, safety, the fragrance industry, and healthcare for the next-generation multifunctional fabrics.

Abstract:When copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were applied as an antimicrobial agent to finish cotton fabrics, there are two issues should be solved: the oxidization and the weak adsorbability onto cotton fiber surface. In the present work, we developed a new method that can achieve both immobilization and protection of the Cu NPs at the same time. As an effective binder, thioglycolic acid (TGA) was covalently linked to cotton fiber surface via an esterification with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose, then Cu NPs were introduced on the fabric surface in the presence of a protective reagent, citric acid. Due to the doubled stabilization acts of TGA and citric acid, the Cu NPs immobilized on the fabric surface showed an excellent antibacterial effect and outstanding laundering durability. Even after 50 consecutive laundering tests, the modified cotton fabrics still showed satisfactory antibacterial ability against both S. aureus and E. coli, which the bacterial reduction rates are all higher than 96 %. It is believed that this methodology has potential applications in a wide variety of textile productions such as sportswear, socks, and medical textiles.

Abstract:The objectives of the present study were to develop an environmentally friendly, low-price, easy, and fast method for developing antipathogenic (antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral) cuprous-oxide-coated multifunctional fabrics. The fabrics were first sensitized with citric acid, and then Cu2O particles were formed using the Fehling solution method. The cuprous oxide particles were then applied to the cotton fabrics. To create the Cu2O particles, three different kinds of reducing agents with varying concentrations were used. SEM, dynamic light scattering, FTIR, EDS, and XRD were used to examine the surface morphologies and metal presences. In the second step, a reactive antibacterial dye was made (by reacting Reactive Blue 4 with triclosan). The molecular structure of the modified dye was confirmed with FTIR. The resultant antibacterial dye was applied on the copper-treated cotton fabrics in accordance with the exhaust dyeing protocol. The dyed fabrics were characterized through the colorimetric data (L*, a*, b*, C, H, and K/S), levelness of dye, fastness properties as well as exhaustion and fixation rates. Cuprous-oxide-coated fabrics were tested for antipathogenic activity using quantitative and qualitative measurement results. The fabrics treated with cuprous oxide particles reduced with sodium hydrosulfite at 1 g/L seemed to have the highest antipathogenic effect. Moreover, the versatility of the hygienically developed bioactive fabrics in terms of their comfort properties such as air permeability and stiffness were investigated. Finally, the coating's durability was confirmed by evaluating its antibacterial properties and performing an SEM analysis after laundry.

Abstract:Natural fibers with functionalities have attracted considerable attention. However, developing facile and versatile strategies to modify natural fibers is still a challenge. In this study, cotton fibers, the most widely used natural fibers, were partially oxidized by sodium periodate in aqueous solution, to give oxidized cotton fibers containing multiple aldehyde groups on their surface. Then poly(hexamethylene guanidine) was chemically grafted onto the oxidized cotton fibers forming Schiff bases between the terminal amines of poly(hexamethylene guanidine) and the aldehyde groups of oxidized cotton fibers. Finally, carbon-nitrogen double bonds were reduced by sodium cyanoborohydride, to bound poly(hexamethylene guanidine) covalently to the surface of cotton fibers. These functionalized fibers show strong and persistent antibacterial activity: complete inhibition against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was maintained even after 1000 consecutive washing in distilled water. On the other hand, cotton fibers with only physically adsorbed poly(hexamethylene guanidine) lost their antibacterial activity entirely after a few washes. According to Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and hemolytic analysis, toxicity did not significantly increase after chemical modification. Attributing to the hydrophilicity of poly(hexamethylene guanidine) coatings, the modified cotton fibers were also more hygroscopic compared to untreated cotton fibers, which can improve the comfort of the fabrics made of modified cotton fibers. This study provides a facile and versatile strategy to prepare modified polysaccharide natural fibers with durable antibacterial activity, biosecurity, and comfortable touch.
Active antibacterial coating of cotton fabrics with antimicrobial proteins

Abstract:Abstract The prevention of bacteria colonization by immobilizing proteins with antimicrobial activity onto cotton fabrics was investigated. Such coatings have potential applications in medical dressing materials used in wound care and healing. Two antimicrobial proteins lysozyme and hydramacin-1 (HM-1) were surface immobilized through two linkers (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and citric acid in the presence of the water soluble carbodiimide coupling reagent 1-cyclohexyl-3-(2-morpholinoethyl)carbodiimide metho-p-toluenesulfonate. Surface composition analysis by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies confirmed formation of the protein-cellulose conjugates. Antimicrobial activities of the different functionalized surfaces were found to vary between APTES and citric acid directed coatings. Citric acid immobilized lysozyme treated samples demonstrated superior activity against Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis , whereas APTES immobilized HM-1 treated samples demonstrated an advantage in inhibiting the growth of Gram-negative Escherichia coli . The antibacterial activity and stability of citric acid immobilized protein fabrics following sonication, boiling and chemical treatment were noticeably higher than that of the corresponding APTES immobilized protein fabrics. The dual coating of fibers with both antimicrobial proteins afforded efficient antimicrobial activities against both bacterial species. The results suggest that coating cotton fibers with antimicrobial proteins and peptides represents a feasible approach for developing active surfaces that prohibit growth and colonization of bacterial strains and can be potentially used in medical cotton-based fabrics.

Abstract:Developing effective material for pesticide adsorption is a vital issue to protect the environment from their harmful effects. Copper-based metal–organic frameworks including Cu-BTC and its mixed metal derivatives (Fe-Cu-BTC, Co–Cu-BTC, and Mn-Cu-BTC) were successfully formed. Fe-Cu-BTC, Co–Cu-BTC and Mn-Cu-BTC MOFs were synthesized by direct substituting one Cu atom in Cu-BTC with Fe, Co, or Mn. Their structures were characterized using Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR, scanning electron microscopy with EDX, Transmission electron microscopy, BET surface area analysis, and Size distribution. Prepared MOFs adsorbed chlorpyrifos from wastewater and their adsorption capacities were compared. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isothermal models were the best to describe the adsorption of chlorpyrifos from water. The coordination bonding was the dominant mechanism; physical adsorption, π-π stacking interaction, and hydrogen bonding were also participated in the adsorption process. Cu-BTC , Fe-Cu-BTC, Co–Cu-BTC and Mn-Cu-BTC had elimination capacities of 379, 851, 683, and 762 mg/g, respectively. This study also investigates their antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and they exhibited a good inhibition effect. The inhibition zone of Co–Cu-BTC is greater than Cu-BTC with 1.44, 1.38, and 1.60 times for E. coli, Ps. Aeruginosa, S. aureus, respectively. The synthesized MOFs are promising materials for the removal of chlorpyrifos with effective antimicrobial agents.

Abstract:The development of durable and effective antibacterial materials has been a research hotspot. Here, we reported a new kind of long-lasting stable antibacterial material [Cu-metal–organic framework (MOF)-embedded polyethylene (PE)/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), namely Cu-MOF-embedded PE/EVA] through extrusion foaming, and its structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The degree of agglomeration or cluster formation, thermal stability, and melting point temperature of different contents of Cu-MOF/PE/EVA foams were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The results indicated that with the increase of Cu-MOF content, the average size and swelling ratio for foams increased, instead, the density decreased. Besides, the surface gradually showed good hydrophobicity. Remarkably, the water absorption rate was nearly 8 times that of pure PE/EVA when the Cu-MOF content reached 3%. Since Cu-MOF is stably embedded in the foaming structure and well dispersed, it can release Cu 2+ at a rate of about 37 ppb/day in foams containing 3% Cu-MOF, which not only maintains the antimicrobial capacity up to 99.2%, but also have no cytotoxicity. Finally, a promising new candidate for medical material with excellent, durable antibacterial ability was proposed.

Abstract:Textiles that protect against bacterial nosocomial infections are vital owing to the associated high morbidity, mortality, and a series of challenges that remain in the treatment of drug-resistant bacteria. To overcome these hurdles, a universal coating was developed by combining g-C3N4/ZIF-8 heterojunction nanoparticles and hydrophobic waterborne polyurethane (PU) to form protective textiles with remarkable antibacterial, anti-adhesive, and antifouling performance. The g-C3N4/ZIF-8 nanoparticles produce reactive oxygen species to render Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus inactive upon visible light illumination, while hydrophobic waterborne PU hinders bacterial adhesion on coated textiles. The synergy of photocatalytic nanoparticles and hydrophobic polymers is what endows textiles with these remarkable antibacterial properties. Moreover, coated textiles also demonstrate antifouling ability, such as the degradation of methylene blue dyes under visible light illumination. As a proof of concept, this coating was applied to common masks, which were then found to exhibit prominent antibacterial properties. Regulating molecular brush structure on cotton textiles for efficient antibacterial properties

Abstract:The molecular brush structures have been developed on cotton textiles for long-term and efficient broad-spectrum antimicrobial performances through the cooperation of alkyl-chain and quaternary ammonium sites. Results show that efficient antibacterial performances can be achieved by the regulation of the alkyl chain length and quaternary ammonium sites. The antibacterial efficiency of the optimized molecular brush structure of [3-( N , N -Dimethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane with cetyl modification on cotton textiles (CT-DM-16) can reach more than 99 % against both E. coli and S. aureus . Alkyl-chain grafting displayed significantly improvement in the antibacterial activity against S. aureus with (N,N-Diethyl-3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane modification on cotton textiles (CT-DE) based materials. The positive N sites and alkyl chains played important roles in the antibacterial process. Proteomic analysis reveals that the contributions of cytoskeleton and membrane-enclosed lumen in differentially expressed proteins have been increased for the S. aureus antibacterial process, confirming the promoted puncture capacity with alkyl-chain grafting. Theoretical calculations indicate that the positive charge of N sites can be enhanced through alkyl-chain grafting, and the possible distortion of the brush structure in application can further increase the positive charge of N sites. Uncovering the regulation mechanism is considered to be important guidance to develop novel and practical antibacterial materials.

Abstract:In the research for the safe and efficiently antibacterial cotton fabrics to minimize risk for human health, an organic–inorganic hybrid material of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) was employed to modify cotton fabrics by a dipping–padding–drying method. The synergistic effects of ZnO NPs and QAS on the structure and antibacterial properties of cotton fabrics were studied in detail. Results displayed that the QAS and ZnO NPs were immobilized firmly in cotton fabric by the formation of chemical covalent bonds and silica gel structure. ZnO/QAS/cotton had a good inhibitory effect on the growth of E. coli and S. aureus , with superior antibacterial efficiency of >99.99%. ZnO/QAS/cotton preserved good mechanical property, water absorbability, and limpness. We also provided a detailed analysis of antibacterial mechanism for the hybrid materials. The contact mechanism and the Zn 2+ release were considered as the main mechanisms for the ZnO/QAS/cotton, while the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation only had a little contribution to the antibacterial activity. In short, the excellent integrated properties endowed the hybrid cotton fabrics as potential application in many fields, like healthcare, food packaging.

Abstract:Natural cotton fibers have attached considerable attention due to their excellent wearing comfort, breathability and warmth. However, it remains a challenge to devise a scalable and facile strategy to retrofit natural cotton fibers. Here, the cotton fiber surface was oxidized by sodium periodate with a mist process, then [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride (DMC) was co-polymerized with hydroxyethyl acrylate (HA) to obtain an antibacterial cationic polymer (DMC-co-HA). The self-synthesized polymer was covalently grafted onto the aldehyde-functionalized cotton fibers via an acetal reaction between hydroxyl groups of the polymer and aldehyde groups of the oxidized cotton surface. Finally, the resulted Janus functionalized cotton fabric (JanCF) revealed robust and persistent antimicrobial activity. The antibacterial test showed that when the molar ratio of DMC/HA was 50: 1, JanCF possessed the best BR (bacterial reduction) values of 100 % against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, the BR values could be maintained over 95 % even after the durability test. In addition, JanCF exhibited excellent antifungal activity against Candida albicans. The cytotoxicity assessment confirmed that JanCF exhibited a reliable safety effect on human skin. Particularly, the intrinsic outstanding characteristics (strength, flexibility, etc.) of the cotton fabric were not considerably deteriorated compared to the control samples.

Abstract:A simple pad-dry-cure modification process is proposed to prepare the antibacterial cotton fabrics with durable antibacterial properties. Two natural antibacterial materials, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and betaine (Bet), were grafted on cotton fiber surface to achieve the goal. FTIR-ATR and XPS results reveal that esterification and amidation reactions have taken place between the CMC, Bet, and the cellulose chains on the surface of cotton fibers. Antibacterial evaluation results confirm the antibacterial capability and the durability of the modified fabrics. The bacterial reduction (BR) rates against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are higher than 99.99 % and can be kept at a level higher than 95 % even after 20 washing cycles. According to the XRD results presented, the entire modification process wreaks little damage to the crystalline structure of the cotton fabric. Especially, both the water vapor permeability and water absorption capability were improved (371.1 g/m2/d and 198 %, respectively) when compared to the original cotton fabric. This work provided a new way to fabricate antimicrobial cotton fabric using bio-based compounds, displaying great application potential in the antibacterial textile industry.

Abstract:Elimination of disease-causing bacteria from cotton fabrics is critically important to control several bacteria-mediated infections in humans. Antibacterial nanoparticles, particularly nanosized silver, has been explored for a wide range of antibacterial applications. Phytosynthesized nanoparticles have gained interests as a benign alternative to chemically synthesized nanoparticles. It is challenging to coat antibacterial nanoparticles on cotton fabrics to exhibit antibacterial activity as the process of washing can easily dislodge the nanoparticles from the fabric and release them into the environment, resulting in nanoparticle-mediated environmental toxicity. Thus, the aim of the present work is to develop a method that will allow effective and stable coating of cotton fabrics with green synthesized antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via a surface cationization process using a novel cationic agent (CHPTAC). The study showed that the AgNPs, synthesized via Dodonaea aungustifolia methanolic leaf extract, were ~ 10 nm in size and effectively coated on the cotton fabric surface using CHPTAC. The presence of about 1.37 % nitrogen in the cationized cotton fabric revealed the possible mechanism of stable AgNP coating on the fabric surface. Antibacterial test of the AgNP coated cotton fabric showed an excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, retaining 99.43 ± 2.4 % and 99.28 ± 2.2 %, respectively of antimicrobial activity with a p-value of 0.09 even after 50 washing cycles. This study is highly useful in the development of antibacterial nanomaterial-coated personal protective equipment from cotton fabric, and this will be beneficial for healthcare personnel.

Abstract:Toxicity continues to be a significant issue within the field of antibacterial textiles. To confer antibacterial functionality onto cotton fabrics while ensuring skin-friendly characteristics without direct contact with antibacterial agents, a novel Janus cotton fabric was developed. The cotton fibers were firstly oxidized using NaIO 4 to introduce aldehyde groups onto the fiber surfaces. Then, a mist treatment technique was employed to acetalize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde (TBD) on one side of the oxidized cotton fabric, while collagen protein (CP) molecules were grafted on the other side through a Schiff base reaction. The resulting cotton fabric exhibits excellent antibacterial property and much improved wearing comfort. The resulting fabric achieved a remarkably high bacterial reduction rate (BR > 99%) against both E. coli and S. aureus , demonstrating excellent durability even after 120 washing cycles or 1000 rubbing cycles. Furthermore, skin irritation tests confirmed the modified fabric's biosafety, while wearing comfort tests demonstrated enhanced comfort properties for the skin.
