Abstract:One of the most significant lessons learned from the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the 1995 Kobe earthquake was the cracking and brittle failure of welded moment connections of modem steel buildings. Important progress has been made, resulting in improved designs. One possible solution for improving the design and construction of moment resisting frame (MRF) buildings ranging in height from mid-rise to high-rise may be the adoption of composite steel and concrete MRF systems in the regions of high seismicity. Because of the existence of reinforced concrete and the high stiffness in a composite MRF, the deformation demand to the encased steel joints becomes less than in a pure steel MRF. Smoother force transfer mechanisms with less stress concentration can be expected in a composite beam-to-column connection. Thus, the development of composite MRFs can provide the structural design and construction professions with an alternative structural system. In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and will be studied by the authors. This paper describes the proposed concepts and analysis of testing specimens.
Structural Design of Office Building with Resilience and Redundancy using Viscoelastic Dampers

Abstract:4-story steel-frame office building was designed having approximately a rectangular plan of 50 m × 40 m (span 9.6m, 5 spans × 4 spans) in Osaka, Japan. Here, there is a risk of large-scaled earthquakes (subduction-zone earthquake and local earthquake which occurs directly underneath), and high earthquake resistance performance and flexibility as office building were required. Therefore, we designed rigid-framed structures without a brace inside the building and provided seismic elements in only outside frames. One pair of K-type buckling restraint braces and one viscoelastic damper with K-type steel braces are set up for each outside frame on each floor considering the eccentricity of this building. This viscoelastic damper controls the seismic response by the damping due to the response velocity and restrains the residual deformation of each story by ist elastic component. In addition, the viscoelastic damper functions as a fail-safe by ist hardening under the large deformation, preventing collapse under large-scaled earthquake exceeding assumptions. We show the advantage of this type of building in terms of resilience and redundancy with structural analysis results.

Abstract:In the long-term seismic work in Japan, an effective seismic reinforcement design system and reasonable seismic reinforcement technology have been developed, which is worth learning from. In this paper, the seismic reinforcement of a school building in Japan is taken as an example. Firstly, an overall reinforcement scheme of external prestressed precast concrete (PC) frame and steel brace is proposed. Then, based on the calculation results of seismic reinforcement and the ambient measurement before and after seismic reinforcement, the effectiveness and rationality of the seismic reinforcement method are analyzed. The results show that the seismic reinforcement method of attached substructures changes the original structural system, and solves the problems of excessive deformation and insufficient seismic performance. The reinforcement method improves the story stiffness of the structure, and the vibration period of simple harmonic motion after the implementation of seismic reinforcement is reduced by 0.845 times at most. The research results can provide reference for seismic reinforcement design and performance evaluation of existing school buildings.

Abstract:Earthquakes, as one of the primary natural disasters, cause significant destruction to building structures. Historically, the collapse of buildings due to earthquakes has resulted in numerous casualties and economic losses. This paper, through a method of literature review, explores the mechanisms of damage to concrete structures under the action of an earthquake and presents the principles of earthquake-resistant design. It analyzes how factors such as the mechanical properties of structural materials, the form of the structure, the strength of connection nodes, and the conditions of the foundation affect structural damage. It proposes measures to enhance the seismic performance of concrete structures through ductility design, strength design, uniform design, and the strategy of multiple lines of defense. This study holds significant implications for the construction industry by offering a systematic set of earthquake-resistant design principles and strategies which can enhance the seismic resilience of existing and future structures, mitigating the damage caused by earthquakes. Moreover, for society at large, this research underscores the importance of reducing seismic disaster risks through scientific design, contributing to the protection of people's lives and property, and promoting sustainable societal development.

Abstract:The aseismic capacity of engineering structures is the first line in the earthquake defense system of the society.Building collapse is one of the major earthquake devastating consequences.Damages of buildings generally reflect the degree of earthquake disaster.As a result,the aseismic capacity of building structures,especially their capacity to prevent collapse,is of great importance to the overall earthquake defense system of the society.Based on analyzing the building seismic damage in the Wenchuan earthquake,methods to increase the overall aseismic capacity of building structures are discussed in the framework of system theory.Some key problems and suggestions for seismic design,especially for increasing the capacity to prevent collapse of building structures are proposed.It is shown that: the safety margin of building structural systems can be divided into 3 levels: fundamental,integral and unexpected safety margins.The overall seismic capacity and collapse prevention of building structures are mainly determined by the integral safety margin and unexpected safety margin.Lack of unexpected safety margin is the main reasons of the severe building damage in the Wenchuan earthquake.The unexpected safety margin of a structural system mainly comes from its robustness,stability and integrity.Research on the integral and unexpected safety margins of building structures is still limited.Corresponding requirements and specifications in current design code for building structures need to be improved.

Abstract:Seismic hazards represent a permanent threat to buildings. The paper argues that risk-oriented approaches provide an interesting solution to account for the long-term resilience of buildings, both for the design of new structures and the rehabilitation of existing ones. The proposed research draws upon the standard definition of risk as a function of vulnerability, hazard and exposure to develop an optimization-based methodology for risk appraisal of buildings in seismic conditions. The proposed methodology allows to identify the optimum layout and thickness of shear walls in a reinforced concrete frame, based on a target risk performance. This is achieved through the coupling of an evolutionary computing environment with an object-oriented structural analysis tool, involving its native Application Programming Interface (API). The latter allows to automate the search for the optimum shear wall configuration solution. The research is validated on the Beichuan Hotel building in Old Beichuan (China), heavily affected by the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake. The paper evidences that the adoption of the proposed methodology leads to a risk reduction of about 80% compared to the as-built scenario, with additional benefits from both a financial and building functionality perspective.

Abstract:Structures designed in accordance with even the most modern buildings codes are expected to sustain damage during a severe earthquake; however; these structures are expected to protect the lives of the occupants. Damage to the structure can require expensive repairs; significant business downtime; and in some cases building demolition. If damage occurs to many structures within a city or region; the regional and national economy may be severely disrupted. To address these shortcomings with current seismic lateral force resisting systems and to work towards more resilient; sustainable cities; a new class of seismic lateral force resisting systems that sustains little or no damage under severe earthquakes has been developed. These new seismic lateral force resisting systems reduce or prevent structural damage to nonreplaceable structural elements by softening the structural response elastically through gap opening mechanisms. To dissipate seismic energy; friction elements or replaceable yielding energy dissipation elements are also included. Post-tensioning is often used as a part of these systems to return the structure to a plumb; upright position (self-center) after the earthquake has passed. This paper summarizes the state-of-the art for self-centering seismic lateral force resisting systems and outlines current research challenges for these systems.

Abstract:In the recent large earthquakes in Chile, New Zealand, and Japan, a great number of critical facilities, including hospitals, schools, bridges, factories, airports, and utility systems, experienced extensive damage resulting in their loss of their function, and consequently substantial economic losses. Heavily affected communities were paralyzed for months following these large seismic events. The recovery process is estimated to last from several years to few decades. As a result, increased attention is being placed on strategies to design facilities that are both safe and damage resistant. It is often presumed that such an approach increases costs to an unacceptable level. The study reported herein compares the repair costs and repair times considering two designs for a typical three-story steel building: conventional fixed-base and damage resistant base-isolated moment resisting frame system. Performance-based earthquake evaluation tools are used to estimate repair costs and times for five different hazard levels considering two occupancy types critical for recovery: healthcare and school. The buildings are located in a seismic region in western North America. It is shown that using seismic isolation to enhance damage resistance results in significantly smaller repair cost, repair time, and improved resilience for the base-isolated alternative compared to a conventional fixed-base design.

Abstract:The presented research focuses on large-scale seismic testing under multi-directional ground motion of a three-story high, wood-frame residential building representing late 1960's California construction. Earthquake lateral resistance is provided by plywood shear walls around the perimeter of the building with an open front in the first story for tuck-under parking. Accordingly, the as-built structural configuration is asymmetric in plan and discontinuous in elevation with tendency to twist about a vertical axis and to form a weak story mechanism. The test results confirm this tendency. They also reveal the sensitivity of the response to multi-direction ground motion. Asymmetric damage patterns are induced by the multi-component motions in the walls oriented perpendicular to the open front for the as-built test structure, with or without finish materials. However, the observed damage remained noncritical as far as structural integrity is concerned even for ground accelerations exceeding 120% of that recorded during Northridge earthquake. This is viewed as a consequence of the better construction of the test building compared to actual construction. Investigated retrofit includes adding a welded moment resisting steel frame around of the garage opening and strengthening the diaphragm to header beam connections. The study indicates that the retrofit significantly reduced the maximum story drift in the open front. Moreover, the finish material and the retrofit greatly reduce the maximum rotation of the building about the vertical axis.

Abstract:Buildings are exposed to multiple natural hazards over their service lives. Multihazard analysis and design of building structures has become a research hotspot worldwide. For these structures, earthquake and progressive collapse are two of the most commonly encountered hazards. However, little research has been conducted to examine the effects of the seismic and progressive collapse designs on the resistance of buildings against multiple hazards. In this study, a series of six-story reinforced concrete (RC) frames are considered, and their seismic and progressive collapse designs are performed independently according to the corresponding design codes. Fragility curves are used to assess the seismic and progressive collapse resistance. The interactions between the two designs are discussed by analyzing the fragility curves and the collapse modes. Results show that the progressive collapse design of the RC frame may lead to an undesirable failure mode (i.e.,strong-beam-weak-column) under earthquakes, which indicates that a seismic redesign is necessary subsequent to the progressive collapse design. Note that sequential use of different design codes for a structure may result in material waste yet a suboptimal structural performance. Therefore, a design method by individually considering different hazards is unsuitable for the multihazard prevention and mitigation of building structures. A comprehensive and integrated design method for multihazards is thus in great need. The outcome of this study will lay a foundation for future multihazard analysis and design of building structures. Abstract:In the aftermath of earthquakes, hospital buildings are expected to remain occupiable to treat the injured. For the purpose, firstly, an appropriate structural system that ensures no or limited structural damage should be provided in such buildings; wall-frames are the recommended structural systems in hospital buildings. Secondly, it is also essential to adequately design wall-frames to help meet the preferred Occupiability seismic performance. The work presented in this paper examines the contributing factors for failure of structural elements in hospital buildings and explores structural configuration and design strategies for mitigating these failures. Nonlinear analyses studies of a typical hospital building in high seismic region in India are carried out to help provide quantitative guidelines for: (a) Structural Plan Density (SPD) of structural walls, and (b) design parameters, for achieving the preferred performance. Displacement-based limit state of structural damage adopted from traditional displacement demand estimation rules is proposed. Lateral stiffness, strength, and ductility are evaluated of study buildings, and efficacy of results obtained from nonlinear static analyses confirmed by performing nonlinear time history analyses in commercial software PERFORM 3D. Results demonstrate inadequacy of moment frame structural system in hospital buildings under strong earthquake shaking, identifies optimum overall SPD of structural walls and relative column-to-beam strength ratio of frame members, required to achieve Occupiability . A minimum 3% SPD of structural walls in Wall – Special Moment Resisting Frame (WSMRF), 4% SPD in Wall – Ordinary moment resisting frame (WOMRF) hospital buildings, and a minimum column-to-beam strength ratio (CBSR) of 2 is required in hospital buildings to attain Occupiability performance.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the design of a reinforced concrete structure for an eight-story shopping building in Singkawang City, located in a low to moderate seismic area. The study integrates relevant design considerations in response to the region's seismic conditions. Through structural analysis, the building is categorized as seismic design category B due to moderate seismic risk, leading to the selection of an ordinary moment-resisting frame system compliant with SNI 1726:2019. Emphasis is placed on the importance of using such a system to enhance ductility and prevent brittleness during earthquakes.The research emphasizes the need to design structures capable of withstanding various loads, including dead, superimposed dead, live, wind, and earthquake loads, particularly in West Kalimantan, known for its historically low to moderate seismic activity. Recent earthquake records highlight the necessity of earthquake-resistant design for safety and durability. Structural analysis confirms the building's stability against seismic forces, with a modal participation ratio meeting SNI 1726:2019 requirements, indicating robust response under seismic loads.The study also assesses inter-story drift and P-Delta effects to ensure they meet allowable limits, which is crucial for preserving structural integrity and preventing post-earthquake instability. A detailed reinforcement design following SNI 2847:2019 enhances structural strength and durability, especially when under seismic loading. The foundation design uses tailored hollow spun piles to provide sufficient bearing capacity and stability. This approach demonstrates resilience against potential seismic events in low-to-moderate seismic regions, highlighting the importance of integrating seismic design principles and ductility considerations for effective earthquake hazard mitigation.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of rapid socio-economic development in our country and the accelerated pace of urbanization, the construction industry has been provided with a vast space for vigorous development. With the increasing demands for building quality, the design of civil engineering structures faces higher challenges and standards. Designers, in the design process, must not only pursue the aesthetic effect of buildings but also pay more attention to the safety of structures. Seismic design has received widespread attention in today's society, as its effectiveness is directly related to the stability and durability of building structures, which in turn affects the personal safety of building users. Therefore, in the design process of civil engineering structures, designers must establish advanced seismic design concepts, making seismic performance one of the core elements of design. To achieve this goal, designers need to scientifically and reasonably determine the seismic grade of buildings by combining multiple factors such as the geological conditions of the project location, history of seismic activity, and building usage. Meanwhile, advanced seismic technologies and materials need to be adopted to ensure that building structures can effectively absorb and disperse seismic energy during earthquakes, thereby maximally protecting the safety of buildings and their users.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of China’s continuous promotion of green and low-carbon transformation and the development of construction industrialization, high-strength composite structural systems have significant development prospects. However, their research and application in the field of construction are insufficient. In response to this issue, the study proposes a new high-performance structural system, namely the composite frame–high-strength steel plate wall core tube resilient structural system, which includes a core tube composed of double steel plate concrete composite shear walls and replaceable energy dissipation coupling beams, as well as composite frames. The highest strength grades of the steel plate and concrete used in the composite walls of the core tube are Q550 and C100, respectively. Using a 200 m building as an example, this study designs and establishes models for this high-performance structure and a conventional reinforced concrete frame–core tube structure. Subsequently, the dynamic elastoplastic time history analysis and seismic resilience assessment of structures are conducted under design basis earthquakes (DBEs), maximum considered earthquakes (MCEs), and extremely rare earthquakes (EREs). Research has shown that, compared to conventional structures, the thickness of shear walls of new high-performance structures can be effectively reduced, which helps decrease the self-weight of the structure and improve the available space in buildings. Additionally, high-performance structures exhibit a better performance in controlling the story drift ratio, lower plastic damage and overall stiffness degradation of the structure, and better seismic performance. The seismic resilience of the high-performance structure has been significantly enhanced, especially in terms of minimizing casualties, thereby better ensuring the safety of people’s lives and property.
Contribution of C-PC to Resilience of Concrete Structures in Seismic Country Japan

Abstract:Japan is a highly seismic country and there have been frequent damages to infrastructure such as bridges and buildings due to earthquakes. Therefore, securing the resilience of infrastructure corresponding to robustness, redundancy, resourcefulness, and rapidity is strongly required. In this study, the current status and practical countermeasures for concrete structures to enhance the resilience using concrete polymer composites(C-PC) were investigated and discussed. C-PC, which have high strength, high early strength development, and high durability, are effective for repair and strengthening to sustain the current performance of structures, to minimize damage, and to quickly recover design-level performance. Practical application of C-PC for the restoration and reconstruction in Japan is also presented.

Abstract:The purpose of this research paper is to clarify the design intentions and methodology behind the experimental application of the Frame Structure by some contemporary Japanese architects through collaboration with structural engineers. The ‘Frame’ is the simplest of structure systems, but was applied to iconic structures such as the Parthenon and Le Corbusier’s Dom-Ino House, each example expressing artistic concepts and technical skills of the concerned era. One of the recent concepts seen in 21st century modern Japanese architecture is the ‘pursuit of transparency and thinness’. This is especially true of SANAA, are presentative group of architects, who – in close collaboration with structural engineers – pursue the quality of extreme thinness in columns and roofs, creatively exploring new methods of using framed structures. This paper focuses on three such projects that exploit the structural aspects of frame construction and, makes an attempt to understand the architects’ intention behind the designs. It presents an analysis of the contemporary interpretation of the traditional frame structure, used by the architects to apparently dissolve the material presence of the building and make it become part of the surroundings. These innovative attempts, made possible through collaboration between architects and structural engineers, signify one of the significant expressions of modernity in Japan.

Abstract:In the design of reinforced concrete multistorey buildings, in which lateral load resistance has been assigned to structural walls, the emphasis should be on a rational strategy in the positioning of walls and the establishment of a hierarchy in the development of strengths to ensure that in the event of a very large earthquake brittle failure will not occur. The preferred mode of energy dissipation should be flexure in a predictable region. Therefore failures due to diagonal tension or compression, crushing of concrete in compression, sliding along construction joints, instability of wall elements or reinforcing bars and breakdown of anchorages should be suppressed. These aims may be achieved with the application of a deterministic design philosophy and they necessitate special detailing and dimensioning of potentially plastic regions of walls. In several areas differences exist between code provisions and practices in the United States and New Zealand.

Abstract:Earthquake-induced building collapse and progressive collapse due to accidental local failure of vertical components are the two most common failure modes of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures. Conventional design methods usually focus on the design requirements of a specific hazard but neglect the interactions between different designs. For example, the progressive collapse design of an RC frame often yields increased reinforcement and flexural strength of the beams. As a result, the seismic design principle of "strong-column-weak-beam" may be violated, which may lead to unfavorable failure modes and weaken the seismic performance. To avoid these adverse effects of the progressive collapse design on the seismic resistance of RC frames, a novel structural detailing is proposed in this study. The proposed detailing technique intends to concurrently improve the seismic and progressive collapse performances of an RC frame by changing the layout of the newly added longitudinal reinforcement against progressive collapse without introducing any additional reinforcement. A six-story RC frame is used as the prototype building for this investigation. Both cyclic and progressive collapse tests are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed structural detailing. Based on the experimental results, detailed finite element (FE) models of the RC frame with different reinforcement layouts are established. The seismic and progressive collapse resistances of different models are compared based on the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) and nonlinear dynamic alternate path (AP) methods, respectively. The results indicate that the proposed structural detailing can effectively resolve the conflict between the seismic and progressive collapse designs.

Abstract:In this paper, the full rehabilitation process of a damaged passively controlled building is reported. A hybrid retrofit plan that uses tin-rubber bearings to replace the damaged oil dampers is proposed and tested within the size requirement and cost budget. Structural Identification and nonlinear dynamic analyses have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the hybrid retrofit plan. After the rehabilitation was completed, the retrofitted building with tin-rubber isolators is proved by a recent earthquake to have a better seismic performance than the original building with oil dampers. Finally, the performance of the damping system will be discussed in this paper based on the performance-based design concepts. The performance level of the energy dissipation devices should be set accordingly based on the building performance level for the seismic rehabilitation design. The safety issues of the structural frame and retrofit procedure after the failure or degradation of the damping devices should be investigated in the future.

Abstract:An earthquake resisting elements are the components that are introduced in a structure to improve its seismic resistance and method of application of these elements are said as techniques. Though structures are designed and detailed as per code provision there remains some possibility of damage or failure in strong earthquake. Performance of buildings may be improved using earthquake resistant elements and techniques. An earthquake produces seismic waves on earth surface of earth due to releases of large energy from lithosphere which produces waves in earth surface causing disturbance in structures resulting failure of seismically weak structures. Seismic waves then travels in horizontal and vertical direction. It causes horizontal and vertical ground movement or vibration. These seismic waves cause disturbances in in buildings. The disturbance caused depends on position of building with respect to the center of disturbance called as epicenter. Intensity of these seismic waves is maximum at center and goes on reducing away from epicenter. Generally horizontal waves are of stronger than vertical so buildings are designed to horizontal seismic forces. These valves travel in any direction but from design purpose it is resolved in two orthogonal directions. Few constructional precautions may help to avoid or minimize damage in buildings. Earthquake resistance of building may be improved with proper design and construction of structures. Some earthquake resisting elements like shear wall, moment resisting frame or innovative techniques like base isolation, or energy dissipation system are used in many high rise buildings to avoid or minimize damage and hence loss of lives and properties. Shear walls are RC member generally introduced in a structure during construction in symmetrical manner. Base isolators in the form bearings are placed between sub and super structure to reduce stiffness of structures. Structures are braced with seismic dampers in energy dissipation system. Composites are used by mixing in concrete or as a warp. All these techniques are reviewed herewith with special attention on shear walls.
