Abstract:Building change detection is useful for land management, disaster assessment, illegal building identification, urban growth monitoring, and geographic information database updating. This study proposes an automatic method that applies object-based analysis to multi-temporal point cloud data to detect building changes. The aim of this building change detection method is to identify areas that have changed and to obtain from-to information. In this method, the data are first preprocessed to generate two sets of digital surface models (DSMs), digital elevation models, and normalized DSMs from registered old and new point cloud data. Thereafter, on the basis of differential DSM, candidates for changed building objects are identified from the points in the smooth areas by using a connected component analysis technique. The random sample consensus fitting algorithm is then used to distinguish the true changed buildings from trees. The changed building objects are classified as “newly built”, “taller”, “demolished” or “lower” by using rule-based analysis. Finally, a test data set consisting of many buildings of different types in an 8.5 km2 area is selected for the experiment. In the test data set, the method correctly detects 97.8% of buildings larger than 50 m2. The accuracy of the method is 91.2%. Furthermore, to decrease the workload of subsequent manual checking of the result, the confidence index for each changed object is computed on the basis of object features.

Abstract:Change detection has been increasingly studied in remote and close-range sensing in the last decades, driven by its importance in environment monitoring and database updating. Due to the development of sensing technologies, data acquisition has become more accessible and affordable and thus more data from various sensing platforms have become available. Thanks to structure-from-motion photogrammetry and lidar technologies, 3D change detection from point cloud data is drawing considerable attention in recent years. Motivated by the lack of a comprehensive review of 3D change detection in the urban environment, this paper reviews the latest developments in urban object change detection using point cloud data. In particular, four types of objects, namely building, street scene, urban tree, and construction site, are analysed in-depth. The use of different data sources for each object-of-interest and the open-source data with change labels are summarised. Then the change detection methods are thoroughly reviewed at pixel, point, voxel, segment and object levels, whose pros and cons are analysed in detail. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities brought by point cloud data and new methods, such as Siamese network deep learning, are discussed for future considerations.

Abstract:Building change detection is essential for monitoring urbanization, disaster assessment, urban planning and frequently updating the maps. 3D structure information from airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is very effective for detecting urban changes. But the 3D point cloud from airborne LiDAR(ALS) holds an enormous amount of unordered and irregularly sparse information. Handling such data is tricky and consumes large memory for processing. Most of this information is not necessary when we are looking for a particular type of urban change. In this study, we propose an automatic method that reduces the 3D point clouds into a much smaller representation without losing the necessary information required for detecting Building changes. The method utilizes the Deep Learning(DL) model U-Net for segmenting the buildings from the background. Produced segmentation maps are then processed further for detecting changes and the results are refined using morphological methods. For the change detection task, we used multi-temporal airborne LiDAR data. The data is acquired over Stockholm in the years 2017 and 2019. The changes in buildings are classified into four types: 'newly built', 'demolished', 'taller' and 'shorter'. The detected changes are visualized in one map for better interpretation.

Firstly, an image-based 3D reconstruction is applied to retrieve two point clouds and related camera poses from two aerial image sets captured at different periods. Then an RGB-D map could be generated from each 3D model, followed by a 2D-3D registration procedure to align the two reconstructed 3D point clouds together. At last, a difference depth map could be generated and from which we can use random forest classification and component connectivity analysis techniques to segment the changed building areas out. Experimental results have illustrated the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed framework.

Abstract:In this work, a novel building change detection method from bi-temporal dense-matching point clouds and aerial images is proposed to address two major problems, namely, the robust acquisition of the changed objects above ground and the automatic classification of changed objects into buildings or non-buildings. For the acquisition of changed objects above ground, the change detection problem is converted into a binary classification, in which the changed area above ground is regarded as the foreground and the other area as the background. For the gridded points of each period, the graph cuts algorithm is adopted to classify the points into foreground and background, followed by the region-growing algorithm to form candidate changed building objects. A novel structural feature that was extracted from aerial images is constructed to classify the candidate changed building objects into buildings and non-buildings. The changed building objects are further classified as "newly built", "taller", "demolished", and "lower" by combining the classification and the digital surface models of two periods. Finally, three typical areas from a large dataset are used to validate the proposed method. Numerous experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Detecting topographic changes in the urban environment has always been an important task for urban planning and monitoring. In practice, remote sensing data are often available in different modalities and at different time epochs. Change detection between multimodal data can be very challenging since the data show different characteristics. Given 3D laser scanning point clouds and 2D imagery from different epochs, this paper presents a framework to detect building and tree changes. First, the 2D and 3D data are transformed to image patches, respectively. A Siamese CNN is then employed to detect candidate changes between the two epochs. Finally, the candidate patch-based changes are grouped and verified as individual object changes. Experiments on the urban data show that 86.4\% of patch pairs can be correctly classified by the model.

Abstract:Change detection is a major issue for urban area monitoring. In this paper, a new three-step point-based method for detecting changes to buildings and trees using airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data is proposed. First, the airborne LiDAR data from two dates are accurately registered using the iterative closest point algorithm, and a progressive triangulated irregular network densification filtering algorithm is used to separate ground points from non-ground points. Second, an octree is generated from the non-ground points to store and index the irregularly-distributed LiDAR points. Finally, by comparing the LiDAR points from two dates and using the AutoClust algorithm, those areas of buildings and trees in the urban environment that have changed are determined effectively and efficiently. The key contributions of this approach are the development of a point-based method to effectively solve the problem of objects at different scales, and the establishment of rules to detect changes in buildings and trees to urban areas, enabling the use of the point-based method over large areas. To evaluate the proposed method, a series of experiments using aerial images are conducted. The results demonstrate that satisfactory performance can be obtained using the proposed approach.

Abstract:Due to the unprecedented technology development of sensors, platforms and algorithms for 3D data acquisition and generation, 3D spaceborne, airborne and close-range data, in the form of image based, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) based point clouds, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and 3D city models, become more accessible than ever before. Change detection (CD) or time-series data analysis in 3D has gained great attention due to its capability of providing volumetric dynamics to facilitate more applications and provide more accurate results. The state-of-the-art CD reviews aim to provide a comprehensive synthesis and to simplify the taxonomy of the traditional remote sensing CD techniques, which mainly sit within the boundary of 2D image/spectrum analysis, largely ignoring the particularities of 3D aspects of the data. The inclusion of 3D data for change detection (termed 3D CD), not only provides a source with different modality for analysis, but also transcends the border of traditional top-view 2D pixel/object-based analysis to highly detailed, oblique view or voxel-based geometric analysis. This paper reviews the recent developments and applications of 3D CD using remote sensing and close-range data, in support of both academia and industry researchers who seek for solutions in detecting and analyzing 3D dynamics of various objects of interest. We first describe the general considerations of 3D CD problems in different processing stages and identify CD types based on the information used, being the geometric comparison and geometric-spectral analysis. We then summarize relevant works and practices in urban, environment, ecology and civil applications, etc. Given the broad spectrum of applications and different types of 3D data, we discuss important issues in 3D CD methods. Finally, we present concluding remarks in algorithmic aspects of 3D CD.

Abstract:Making sense of the physical world has always been at the core of mapping. Up until recently, this has always dependent on using the human eye. Using airborne lasers, it has become possible to quickly "see" more of the world in many more dimensions. The resulting enormous point clouds serve as data sources for applications far beyond the original mapping purposes ranging from flooding protection and forestry to threat mitigation. In order to process these large quantities of data, novel methods are required. In this contribution, we develop models to automatically classify ground cover and soil types. Using the logic of machine learning, we critically review the advantages of supervised and unsupervised methods. Focusing on decision trees, we improve accuracy by including beam vector components and using a genetic algorithm. We find that our approach delivers consistently high quality classifications, surpassing classical methods.

Abstract:This study proposed a new framework that combines pixel-level change detection and object-level recognition to detect changes of built-up land from high-spatial resolution remote sensing images. First, an adaptive differencing method was designed to detect changes at the pixel level based on both spectral and textural features. Next, the changed pixels were subjected to a set of morphological operations to improve the completeness and to generate changed objects, achieving the transition of change detection from the pixel level to the object level. The changed objects were further recognised through the difference of morphological building index in two phases to indicate changed objects on built-up land. The transformation from changed pixels to changed objects makes the proposed framework distinct with both the pixel-based and the object-based change detection methods. Compared with the pixel-based methods, the proposed framework can improve the change detection capability through the transformation and successive recognition of objects. Compared with the object-based method, the proposed framework avoids the issue of multitemporal segmentation and can generate changed objects directly from changed pixels. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the transformation from changed pixels to changed objects and the successive object-based recognition on improving the detection accuracy, which justify the application potential of the proposed change detection framework.
DC3DCD: unsupervised learning for multiclass 3D point cloud change detection

Abstract:In a constant evolving world, change detection is of prime importance to keep updated maps. To better sense areas with complex geometry (urban areas in particular), considering 3D data appears to be an interesting alternative to classical 2D images. In this context, 3D point clouds (PCs), whether obtained through LiDAR or photogrammetric techniques, provide valuable information. While recent studies showed the considerable benefit of using deep learning-based methods to detect and characterize changes into raw 3D PCs, these studies rely on large annotated training data to obtain accurate results. The collection of these annotations are tricky and time-consuming. The availability of unsupervised or weakly supervised approaches is then of prime interest. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised method, called DeepCluster 3D Change Detection (DC3DCD), to detect and categorize multiclass changes at point level. We classify our approach in the unsupervised family given the fact that we extract in a completely unsupervised way a number of clusters associated with potential changes. Let us precise that in the end of the process, the user has only to assign a label to each of these clusters to derive the final change map. Our method builds upon the DeepCluster approach, originally designed for image classification, to handle complex raw 3D PCs and perform change segmentation task. An assessment of the method on both simulated and real public dataset is provided. The proposed method allows to outperform fully-supervised traditional machine learning algorithm and to be competitive with fully-supervised deep learning networks applied on rasterization of 3D PCs with a mean of IoU over classes of change of 57.06\% and 66.69\% for the simulated and the real datasets, respectively.

Abstract:Over recent decades, 3D point clouds have been a popular data source applied in automatic change detection in a wide variety of applications. Compared with 2D images, using 3D point clouds for change detection can provide an alternative solution offering different modalities and enabling a highly detailed 3D geometric and attribute analysis. This article provides a comprehensive review of point-cloud-based 3D change detection for urban objects. Specifically, in this study, we had two primary aims: (i) to ascertain the critical techniques in change detection, as well as their strengths and weaknesses, including data registration, variance estimation, and change analysis; (ii) to contextualize the up-to-date uses of point clouds in change detection and to explore representative applications of land cover and land use monitoring, vegetation surveys, construction automation, building and indoor investigations, and traffic and transportation monitoring. A workflow following the PRISMA 2020 rules was applied for the search and selection of reviewed articles, with a brief statistical analysis of the selected articles. Additionally, we examined the limitations of current change detection technology and discussed current research gaps between state-of-the-art techniques and engineering demands. Several remaining issues, such as the reliability of datasets, uncertainty in results, and contribution of semantics in change detection, have been identified and discussed. Ultimately, this review sheds light on prospective research directions to meet the urgent needs of anticipated applications.

Analysis and Verification of Building Changes Based on Point Clouds from Different Sources and Time Periods

Abstract:Detecting changes in buildings over time is an important issue in monitoring urban areas, landscape changes, assessing natural disaster risks or updating geospatial databases. Three-dimensional (3D) information derived from dense image matching or laser data can effectively extract changes in buildings. This research proposes an automated method for detecting building changes in urban areas using archival aerial images and LiDAR data. The archival images, dating from 1970 to 1993, were subjected to a dense matching procedure to obtain point clouds. The LiDAR data came from 2006 and 2012. The proposed algorithm is based on height difference-generated nDSM. In addition, morphological filters and criteria considering area size and shape parameters were included. The study was divided into two sections: one concerned the detection of buildings from LiDAR data, an issue that is now widely known and used; the other concerned an attempt at automatic detection from archived aerial images. The automation of detection from archival data proved to be complex, so issues related to the generation of a dense point cloud from this type of data were discussed in detail. The study revealed problems of archival images related to the poor identification of ground control points (GCP), insufficient overlap between images or poor radiometric quality of the scanned material. The research showed that over the 50 years, the built-up area increased as many as three times in the analysed area. The developed method of detecting buildings calculated at a level of more than 90% in the case of the LiDAR data and 88% based on the archival data.

Building change detection using aerial images and existing 3D data

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to develop a practical system for building damage detection in dense urban areas after natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis. A novel approach is presented that allows real-time building change detection using high resolution aerial images and existing 3D building data. The developed system contains two major processing modules: inflight processing and ground processing. Inflight processing module mainly extracts feature information from images acquired by an airborne digital camera, and compresses them in order to transfer to the ground. Ground processing module is responsible to analyze building changes by comparing the feature information to the existing 3D data. The automated change detection is performed by the following steps: firstly, edge features of all buildings in the aerial images are extracted on board of an aircraft; Then, the outlines of each building, which are extracted from the 3D building data, are projected onto the images based on the interior and exterior orientation parameters of the camera, and compared to the extracted edge features of each building in the images. The Portion Hausdorff Matching is applied to calculate the similarities between the projected outlines and the extracted edge features. Finally, collapsed buildings are detected using the calculated similarities. The maximal similarity between the edge features and the projected outlines in the direction of projection can be used to detect the change in building height. This approach is verified using an airborne digital camera UltraCamD image and corresponding 3D building data of Tokyo, Japan. The heights of some buildings in the 3D building data are manually modified in order to simulate building changes. The experimental results show that among 1320 buildings used in the test, 45 buildings are successfully detected as collapsed or removed. Among them, 9 buildings are correctly detected out of 10 collapsed buildings. Also, 2885 buildings are used in another test for detecting changes in building heights. 11 of the 27 buildings known to have height changes are successfully detected. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach shows great potential for practical applications although still faces challenges from factors such as inaccurate 3D building data, occlusions due to high building density, and small changes in building height. ©2009 IEEE.
Target Classification of Similar Spatial Characteristics in Complex Urban Areas by Using Multispectral LiDAR

Abstract:With the rapid modernization, many remote-sensing sensors were developed for classifying urban land and environmental monitoring. Multispectral LiDAR, which serves as a new technology, has exhibited potential in remote-sensing monitoring due to the synchronous acquisition of three-dimension point cloud and spectral information. This study confirmed the potential of multispectral LiDAR for complex urban land cover classification through three comparative methods. Firstly, the Optech Titan LiDAR point cloud was pre-processed and ground filtered. Then, three methods were analyzed: (1) Channel 1, based on Titan data to simulate the classification of a single-band LiDAR; (2) three-channel information and the digital surface model (DSM); and (3) three-channel information and DSM combined with the calculated three normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVIs) for urban land classification. A decision tree was subsequently used in classification based on the combination of intensity information, elevation information, and spectral information. The overall classification accuracies of the point cloud using the single-channel classification and the multispectral LiDAR were 64.66% and 93.82%, respectively. The results show that multispectral LiDAR has excellent potential for classifying land use in complex urban areas due to the availability of spectral information and that the addition of elevation information to the classification process could boost classification accuracy.

Abstract:The management of large point clouds obtained by LiDAR sensors is an important topic in recent years due to the widespread use of this technology in a wide variety of applications and the increasing volume of data captured. One of the main applications of LIDAR systems is the study of the temporal evolution of the real environment. In open environments, it is important to know the evolution of erosive processes or landscape transformation. In the context of civil engineering and urban environments, it is useful for monitoring urban dynamics and growth, and changes during the construction of buildings or infrastructure facilities. The main problem with change detection (CD) methods is erroneous detection due to precision errors or the use of different capture devices at different times. This work presents a method to compare large point clouds, based on the study of the local fractal dimension of point clouds at multiple scales. Our method is robust in the presence of environmental and sensor factors that produce abnormal results with other methods. Furthermore, it is more stable than others in cases where there is no significant displacement of points but there is a local alteration of the structure of the point cloud. Furthermore, the precision can be adapted to the complexity and density of the point cloud. Finally, our solution is faster than other CD methods such as distance-based methods and can run at O(1) under some conditions, which is important when working with large datasets. All these improvements make the proposed method more suitable than the others to solve complex problems with LiDAR data, such as storage, time series data management, visualization, etc.

Abstract:Abstract. Change detection is an essential step to locate the area where an old model should be updated. With high density and accuracy, LiDAR data is often used to create a 3D city model. However, updating LiDAR data at state or nation level often takes years. Very high resolution (VHR) images with high updating rate is therefore an option for change detection. This paper provides a novel and efficient approach to derive pixel-based building change detection between past LiDAR and new VHR images. The proposed approach aims notably at reducing false alarms of changes near edges. For this purpose, LiDAR data is used to supervise the process of finding stereo pairs and derive the changes directly. This paper proposes to derive three possible heights (so three DSMs) by exploiting planar segments from LiDAR data. Near edges, the up to three possible heights are transformed into discrete disparities. A optimal disparity is selected from a reasonable and computational efficient range centered on them. If the optimal disparity is selected, but still the stereo pair found is wrong, a change has been found. A Markov random field (MRF) with built-in edge awareness from images is designed to find optimal disparity. By segmenting the pixels into plane and edge segments, the global optimization problem is split into many local ones which makes the optimization very efficient. Using an optimization and a consecutive occlusion consistency check, the changes are derived from stereo pairs having high color difference. The algorithm is tested to find changes in an urban areas in the city of Amersfoort, the Netherlands. The two different test cases show that the algorithm is indeed efficient. The optimized disparity images have sharp edges along those of images and false alarms of changes near or on edges and occlusions are largely reduced.

Abstract:Change detection using high temporal resolution remote sensing satellite data for identifying changes on the Earth’s surface is critical in urban applications, including vacant land site monitoring. Physical ground surveys, for monitoring the vacant site, are a time-consuming process. Results of analysis of satellite data for identifying changes vary, based on the image interpretation skills and satellite data resolution. The application of computer vision tools and libraries for change detection using image interpretation has shown some excellent results. It can be further enhanced by adding machine learning techniques. This study focuses on integration of binary change detection with machine learning techniques for identifying the change detection and for monitoring the vacant sites in an urban area. Edge detection technique coupled with principal component analysis and k-means clustering for generating change map successfully depicts the changes. Change detection results are further enhanced by adding feature type information derived using machine learning–based classifiers. Random forest classifiers are used to classify and identify different land use classes within the urban area: water bodies, cropland, built-up, roads, and bare land. The approach is evaluated on different areas, giving an overall accuracy of 88.2%, precision of 84.8%, and an F1 score of 81.6% for classification. The classification results are integrated with change detection results to identify changes where the bare land is transformed into built-up by identifying buildings/houses. The work will be helpful in urban planning bodies having multiple vacant land sites for monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract Creating 3D models of the static environment is an important task for the advancement of driver assistance systems and autonomous driving. In this work, a static reference map is created from a Mobile Mapping “light detection and ranging” (LiDAR) dataset. The data was obtained in 14 measurement runs from March to October 2017 in Hannover and consists in total of about 15 billion points. The point cloud data are first segmented by region growing and then processed by a random forest classification, which divides the segments into the five static classes (“facade”, “pole”, “fence”, “traffic sign”, and “vegetation”) and three dynamic classes (“vehicle”, “bicycle”, “person”) with an overall accuracy of 94%. All static objects are entered into a voxel grid, to compare different measurement epochs directly. In the next step, the classified voxels are combined with the result of a visibility analysis. Therefore, we use a ray tracing algorithm to detect traversed voxels and differentiate between empty space and occlusion. Each voxel is classified as suitable for the static reference map or not by its object class and its occupation state during different epochs. Thereby, we avoid to eliminate static voxels which were occluded in some of the measurement runs (e.g. parts of a building occluded by a tree). However, segments that are only temporarily present and connected to static objects, such as scaffolds or awnings on buildings, are not included in the reference map. Overall, the combination of the classification with the subsequent entry of the classes into a voxel grid provides good and useful results that can be updated by including new measurement data.
