Abstract:The attentional blink(AB) between two color processing tasks was investigated.In Exp.1,observers determined whether or not two sequentially displayed arrays(memory array and test array) of items were identical in color.The results showed that when the Memory-Test SOA was 220ms,the performance of change-detection was impaired because of the consumption of cognitive resource by the processing of memory items.In Exp.2 two tasks were executed sequentially,both of which were to detect whether the colors of two simultaneously presented items were identical.The results revealed that the color detection task can produce an AB effect whose magnitude and duration were comparable to those produced by letter identification task.Based upon these results,it was suggested that to achieve a feature detection task,limited cognitive resource is required.In addition,at the stage of processing wherein AB is produced,the cognitive resources consumed by feature detection task and tasks requiring identification of detail information(e.g.letter identification task) were comparable.
Neural Repetition Suppression Modulates Time Perception: Evidence From Electrophysiology and Pupillometry

Abstract:Abstract Human time perception is malleable and subject to many biases. For example, it has repeatedly been shown that stimuli that are physically intense or that are unexpected seem to last longer. Two competing hypotheses have been proposed to account for such biases: One states that these temporal illusions are the result of increased levels of arousal that speeds up neural clock dynamics, whereas the alternative “magnitude coding” account states that the magnitude of sensory responses causally modulates perceived durations. Common experimental paradigms used to study temporal biases cannot dissociate between these accounts, as arousal and sensory magnitude covary and modulate each other. Here, we present two temporal discrimination experiments where two flashing stimuli demarcated the start and end of a to-be-timed interval. These stimuli could be either in the same or a different location, which led to different sensory responses because of neural repetition suppression. Crucially, changes and repetitions were fully predictable, which allowed us to explore effects of sensory response magnitude without changes in arousal or surprise. Intervals with changing markers were perceived as lasting longer than those with repeating markers. We measured EEG (Experiment 1) and pupil size (Experiment 2) and found that temporal perception was related to changes in ERPs (P2) and pupil constriction, both of which have been related to responses in the sensory cortex. Conversely, correlates of surprise and arousal (P3 amplitude and pupil dilation) were unaffected by stimulus repetitions and changes. These results demonstrate, for the first time, that sensory magnitude affects time perception even under constant levels of arousal.

Abstract:Perceiving simultaneity is critical in integrating visual and auditory signals that give rise to a unified perception. We examined whether background color modulates people's perception of audiovisual simultaneity. Two hypotheses were proposed and examined: (1) the red-impairment hypothesis: visual processing speed deteriorates when viewing a red background because the magnocellular system is inhibited by red light; and (2) the blue-enhancement hypothesis: the detection of both visual and auditory signals is enhanced when viewing a blue background because it stimulates the blue-light sensitive intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which trigger a higher alert state. Participants were exposed to different backgrounds while performing an audiovisual simultaneity judgment (SJ) task: a flash and a beep were presented at pre-designated stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) and participants judged whether or not the two stimuli were presented simultaneously. Experiment 1 demonstrated a shift of the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) toward the visual-leading condition in the red compared to the blue background when the flash was presented in the periphery. In Experiment 2, the stimulation of ipRGCs was specifically manipulated to test the blue-enhancement hypothesis. The results showed no support for this hypothesis, perhaps due to top-down cortical modulations. Taken together, the shift of PSS toward the visual-leading condition in the red background was attributed to impaired visual processing speed with respect to auditory processing speed, caused by the inhibition of the magnocellular system under red light.

Abstract:Visual experience is painted in color. A change in hue or saturation can dramatically alter our understanding of a scene and how we feel about it. Subjectively, color does not feel like an optional dimension to be extracted only when necessary, but an automatically represented property of our entire visual field. Here, we ask whether that subjective impression is true. Using a variant of an inattentional blindness paradigm, we showed observers snapshots of colorful scenes when unbeknownst to them, an image was presented that was either desaturated or hue rotated across an overwhelming majority of the images. Although observers fixated on these images long enough to identify and describe them, a large number of observers were completely unaware of these drastic color manipulations. These findings suggest that the amount of color observers perceive "in the blink of an eye" is drastically less than personal introspection would suggest.

Abstract:Subjective estimates of duration are affected by emotional expectations about the future. For example, temporal intervals preceding a threatening event such as an electric shock are estimated as longer than intervals preceding a non-threatening event. However, it has not been unequivocally shown that such temporal overestimation occurs also when anticipating a similarly arousing but appealing event. In this study, we examined how anticipation of visual erotic material influenced perceived duration. Participants did a temporal bisection task, where they estimated durations of visual cues relative to previously learned short and long standard durations. The color of the to-be-timed visual cue signalled either a chance of seeing a preferred erotic picture at the end of the interval or certainty of seeing a neutral grey bar instead. The results showed that anticipating an appealing event increased the likelihood of estimating the cue duration as long as compared to the anticipation of a grey bar. Further analyses showed that this temporal overestimation effect was stronger for those who rated the anticipated erotic pictures as more sexually arousing. The results thus indicate that anticipation of appealing events has a similar dilating effect on perceived duration as does the anticipation of aversive events.
[Biochemical changes in rabbits experimentally infected by Trypanosoma evansi].

Abstract:The purpose of the present paper has been evaluating the biochemical changes in rabbits experimentally infected by Trypanosome evansi. Six male rabbits, separated in two groups, were used with the group A, the control group, being composed by non-infected animals and the group B composed by rodents infected with a T. evansi stump. The animals were maintained at room temperature and they have been analyzed during 120 days through 5 blood collections on days 1, 20, 40, 60 and 120. The biochemical changes observed in the infected rabbits were hyperproteinemia, hyperglobulinemia, increase on the urea levels, and significant decrease on ALT and albumin. The creatinine remained within the normality parameters. The rodents belonging to the group B have shown biochemical changes even after 80 days when the protozoon was not observed in the circulation anymore.

Abstract:Integrating visual and tactile information in the temporal domain is critical for active perception. To accomplish this, coordinated timing is required. Here, we study perceived duration within and across these two modalities. Specifically, we examined how duration comparisons within and across vision and touch were influenced by temporal context and presentation order using a two-interval forced choice task. We asked participants to compare the duration of two temporal intervals defined by tactile or visual events. Two constant standard durations (700 ms and 1,000 ms in ‘shorter’ sessions; 1,000 ms and 1,500 ms in ‘longer’ sessions) were compared to variable comparison durations in different sessions. In crossmodal trials, standard and comparison durations were presented in different modalities, whereas in the intramodal trials, the two durations were presented in the same modality. The standard duration was either presented first (<sc>) or followed the comparison duration (<cs>). In both crossmodal and intramodal conditions, we found that the longer standard duration was overestimated in <cs> trials and underestimated in <sc> trials whereas the estimation of shorter standard duration was unbiased. Importantly, the estimation of 1,000ms was biased when it was the longer standard duration within the shorter sessions but not when it was the shorter standard duration within the longer sessions, indicating an effect of temporal context. The effects of presentation order can be explained by a central tendency effect applied in different ways to different presentation orders. Both crossmodal and intramodal conditions showed better discrimination performance for <sc> trials than <cs> trials, supporting the Type B effect for both crossmodal and intramodal duration comparison. Moreover, these results were not dependent on whether the standard duration was defined using tactile or visual stimuli. Overall, our results indicate that duration comparison between vision and touch is dependent on presentation order and temporal context, but not modality.

Abstract:Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Ahead of Print. The perception of and reaction to objects creates bindings of (object) features and responses, also called event files. In this context, time is a so far understudied feature. We conducted four experiments to investigate whether the duration of visual stimuli is also integrated into such event files. Experiments 1, 2, and 4 used a simple colour classification task and in Experiment 3 the location of a stimulus had to be classified. In all Experiments, the presentation duration of the stimuli (coloured circles) was either short (20 ms) or long (300 ms). We expected partial repetition costs as an indicator of binding. That is, performance should be better when both colour (Experiment 3: location) and duration repeat or alternate relative to partial repetitions. Results showed no partial repetition costs in Experiments 1 and 3, indicating no integration of duration into visual event files. Experiments 2 and 4 revealed partial repetition costs. Performance was better when Colour and Duration repeated compared with a partial repetition. What distinguishes the latter two experiments from the former is that the coloured stimuli could change their presentation location. The results of all four experiments show a pattern that duration can be integrated into visual event files depending on two criteria: The experimental context holds the possibility of a location change of the target stimulus (Experiments 2 and 4) and the location itself is not response relevant (Experiment 3). The role of location changes for the integration of temporal stimulus features into visual event files is discussed.

Abstract:Perception, Ahead of Print. It has been shown that the perceived duration of an object in the subsecond range is closely associated with its nontemporal perceptual properties, the mechanism under which remains unclear. Previous studies have revealed a modulatory effect of early visual feature processing on the apparent duration. Here, we further examined the relationship between perceptual confidence and subjective time by asking participants to simultaneously perform temporal and nontemporal perceptual judgments. The results revealed a significant effect on confidence levels. When participants' confidence in judging the coherent motion direction or relative dot numerosity increases, their perceived duration of the stimulus also appears longer. These results are discussed in the context of perceptual evidence accumulation and evaluation for the decision-making of perceptual properties. They suggest a profound contribution of object processing to the computation of subjective time and provide further insights into the mechanism of event timing.

Abstract:Specific emotions and colors are associated. The current study tested whether the interference of colors with affective processing occurs solely in the semantic stage or extends to a more complex stage like the lexical processing of emotional words. We performed two experiments to determine the effect of colors on affective processing. In Experiment 1, participants completed a color-emotion priming task. The priming stimulus included a color-tinted (blue, red, and gray) image of a neutral face, followed by a target stimulus of gray-scaled emotional (angry and sad) and neutral faces after 50 ms. Experiment 2 used a modified emostroop paradigm and superimposed emotion words on the center of the color-tinted emotional and neutral faces. Results showed the priming effect of red for the angry face compared to the control, but not in blue for the sad face compared to the control. However, responses to the blue-sad pair were significantly faster than the red-sad pair. In the color-emostroop task, we observed a significant interaction between color and emotion target words in the modified emostroop task. Participants detected sad targets more accurately and faster in blue than red, but only in the incongruent condition. The results indicate that the influence of color in the processing of emotional information exists at the semantic level but found no evidence supporting the lexical level effect.

Abstract:Abstract Shifting attention from one color to another color or from color to another feature dimension such as shape or orientation is imperative when searching for a certain object in a cluttered scene. Most attention models that emphasize feature-based selection implicitly assume that all shifts in feature-selective attention underlie identical temporal dynamics. Here, we recorded time courses of behavioral data and steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), an objective electrophysiological measure of neural dynamics in early visual cortex to investigate temporal dynamics when participants shifted attention from color or orientation toward color or orientation, respectively. SSVEPs were elicited by four random dot kinematograms that flickered at different frequencies. Each random dot kinematogram was composed of dashes that uniquely combined two features from the dimensions color (red or blue) and orientation (slash or backslash). Participants were cued to attend to one feature (such as color or orientation) and respond to coherent motion targets of the to-be-attended feature. We found that shifts toward color occurred earlier after the shifting cue compared with shifts toward orientation, regardless of the original feature (i.e., color or orientation). This was paralleled in SSVEP amplitude modulations as well as in the time course of behavioral data. Overall, our results suggest different neural dynamics during shifts of attention from color and orientation and the respective shifting destinations, namely, either toward color or toward orientation.

Abstract:Introduction: Human color vision exhibits significant diversity that cannot be fully explained by categorical classifications. Understanding how individuals with different color vision phenotypes perceive, recognize, and react to the same physical stimuli provides valuable insights into sensory characteristics. This study aimed to identify behavioral and neural differences between different color visions, primarily classified as typical trichromats and anomalous trichromats, in response to two chromatic stimuli, blue-green and red, during an attention-demanding oddball task. Methods: We analyzed the P3 component of event-related potentials (ERPs), associated with attention, and conducted a broad spatiotemporal exploration of neural differences. Behavioral responses were also analyzed to complement neural data. Participants included typical trichromats ( n = 13) and anomalous trichromats ( n = 5), and the chromatic stimuli were presented in an oddball paradigm. Results: Typical trichromats exhibited faster potentiation from the occipital to parietal regions in response to the more salient red stimulus, particularly in the area overlapping with the P3 component. In contrast, anomalous trichromats revealed faster potentiation to the expected more salient blue-green stimulus in the occipital to parietal regions, with no other significant neural differences between stimuli. Comparisons between the color vision types showed no significant overall neural differences. Discussion: The large variability in red-green sensitivity among anomalous trichromats, along with neural variability not fully explained by this sensitivity, likely contributed to the absence of clear neural distinctions based on color saliency. While reaction times were influenced by red-green sensitivity, neural signals showed ambiguity regarding saliency differences. These findings suggest that factors beyond red-green sensitivity influenced neural activity related to color perception and cognition in minority color vision phenotypes. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to more comprehensively explore these neural dynamics and their broader implications.

Abstract:Subjective time perception can change based on a stimulus's valence and expectancy. Yet, it's unclear how these two factors might interact to shape our sense of how long something lasts. Here, we conducted two experiments examining the effects of temporal and probabilistic expectancy on the perceived duration of images with varying emotional valence. In Experiment 1, we varied the temporal predictive cue with varying stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs), while in Experiment 2, we manipulated the cue-emotion probabilistic associations. Our results revealed that stimuli appearing earlier than anticipated were perceived as shorter, whereas less infrequent stimuli seemed to last longer. Additionally, negative images were perceived longer than neural ones. However, no significant interaction between expectancy and stimulus valence was observed. We interpret these using the internal clock model, suggesting that while emotional stimuli primarily impact the pacemaker's rhythm through arousal, expectation steers attention, influencing how we register time's passage.

Abstract:Biological systems must allocate limited perceptual resources to relevant elements in their environment. This often requires simultaneous selection of multiple elements from the same feature dimension (e.g. color). To establish the determinants of divided attentional selection of color, we conducted an experiment that used multicolored displays with four overlapping random dot kinematograms that differed only in hue. We manipulated (i) requirement to focus attention to a single color or divide it between two colors; (ii) distances of distractor hues from target hues in a perceptual color space. We conducted a behavioral and an electroencephalographic experiment, in which each color was tagged by a specific flicker frequency and driving its own steady-state visual evoked potential. Behavioral and neural indices of attention showed several major consistencies. Concurrent selection halved the neural signature of target enhancement observed for single targets, consistent with an approximately equal division of limited resources between two hue-selective foci. Distractors interfered with behavioral performance in a context-dependent fashion but their effects were asymmetric, indicating that perceptual distance did not adequately capture attentional distance. These asymmetries point towards an important role of higher-level mechanisms such as categorization and grouping-by-color in determining the efficiency of attentional allocation in complex, multicolored scenes.

Abstract:Abstract We investigated mechanisms of concurrent attentional selection of location and color using electrophysiological measures in human subjects. Two completely overlapping random dot kinematograms (RDKs) of two different colors were presented on either side of a central fixation cross. On each trial, participants attended one of these four RDKs, defined by its specific combination of color and location, in order to detect coherent motion targets. Sustained attentional selection while monitoring for targets was measured by means of steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) elicited by the frequency-tagged RDKs. Attentional selection of transient targets and distractors was assessed by behavioral responses and by recording event-related potentials to these stimuli. Spatial attention and attention to color had independent and largely additive effects on the amplitudes of SSVEPs elicited in early visual areas. In contrast, behavioral false alarms and feature-selective modulation of P3 amplitudes to targets and distractors were limited to the attended location. These results suggest that feature-selective attention produces an early, global facilitation of stimuli having the attended feature throughout the visual field, whereas the discrimination of target events takes place at a later stage of processing that is only applied to stimuli at the attended position.

Precision of Memory for Attended and Ignored Colors

Abstract:Selective attention can enhance some aspects of our visual world while filtering others from awareness. Given our limited cognitive resources, such filtering is essential when viewing complex scenes, but it also applies to simple scenes. Eitam, Yeshurun, and Hassan (2013) observed better performance for the attended color than the ignored color in a simple, two-colored object even though both colors were salient and the complexity of the display did not tax the capacity of visual memory. Our goal was to replicate this finding while addressing a potential task demand that could have contributed to the results. Specifically, participants might have misread the instructions and mistakenly reported the attended color when asked to report the ignored color first. Experiment 1 (n=67) replicated Eitam et al.’s (2013) finding while measuring memory precision. We found that people had worse memory for the ignored than the attended feature of a single, simple object. Experiment 2 (n=69) replicated the pattern while again addressing the potential task demand, although the effect was smaller. Experiment 3 (n=186) provided visual feedback to eliminate any remaining risk of response error and again replicated the original finding. Attended information was stored with greater precision than unattended information, even for a simple object.
