Abstract:Seed oils are important natural resources used in the processing and preparation of food. Histone modifications represent key epigenetic mechanisms that regulate gene expression, plant growth and development. However, histone modification events during fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis are not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that a mutation of the histone acetyltransferase GCN5 can decrease the ratio of α-linolenic acid (ALA) to linoleic acid (LA) in seed oil. Using RNA-Seq and ChIP assays, we identified FAD3, LACS2, LPP3 and PLAIIIβ as the targets of GCN5. Notably, the GCN5-dependent H3K9/14 acetylation of FAD3 determined the expression levels of FAD3 in Arabidopsis thaliana seeds, and the ratio of ALA/LA in the gcn5 mutant was rescued to the wild-type levels through the overexpression of FAD3. The results of this study indicated that GCN5 modulated FA biosynthesis by affecting the acetylation levels of FAD3. We provide evidence that histone acetylation is involved in FA biosynthesis in Arabidopsis seeds and might contribute to the optimization of the nutritional structure of edible oils through epigenetic engineering.
Attitudes, Behaviors, and Risks of Sun Protection to Prevent Skin Cancer Amongst Children, Adolescents, and Adults

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis worldwide. Many factors are involved in the development of skin cancers, but ultraviolet (UV) light exposure is the most modifiable. Our lifetime cumulative UV exposure may be a result of poor sun protection practices in childhood and adolescence. Modifying the attitudes and behaviors of children can be done in the classroom, at recreational activities, and at home. A review of the literature was conducted using Embase and PubMed to examine the relationship between attitudes and behaviors as they relate to sun protection strategies. Well-developed, standardized sun protection educational programs are needed to instruct children and adolescents. Individualized counseling from physicians or online programs is needed to help parents increase sun-safe standards for their children. Many young women utilize indoor tanning beds frequently, but many instructional programs increased their tanning bed usage. Time should be allotted at schools, sports practices, camps, and other outdoor activities for sunscreen reapplication. Many parents and children report the media is their primary source of information about sun safety. Media outlets may positively change attitudes and behaviors when reporting about sun safety. Parents and children need individualized programs or counseling to reduce ultraviolet (UV) exposure and increase sun protection. At-risk populations need tailored instruction, but few strategies have worked to decrease UV exposure.
The Environmental Protection Agency's National SunWise School Program: sun protection education in US schools (1999-2000)

Abstract:Background: Melanoma, the most fatal form of skin cancer, is rising at a rate faster than that of all preventable cancers except lung cancer in the United States. Childhood exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light increases the risk for skin cancer as an adult; thus starting positive sun protection habits early may be key to reducing incidence. Methods: We evaluated the US Environmental Protection Agency's SunWise School Program, a national, environmental education program for sun safety of children in primary and secondary schools (kindergarten through eighth grade). The program was evaluated with surveys administered to participating students. An identical 18-question, self-administered survey was completed by students (median age, 10 years) in the classroom before and immediately after the SunWise educational program. Results: Surveys were completed by students in 40 schools before (pretests; n = 1894) and after the program was presented (post-tests; n = 1815). Significant improvement was noted for the 3 knowledge variables: appropriate type of sunscreen to be used for outdoor play, highest UV Index number, and need for hats and shirts outside. Intentions to play in the shade increased from 73% to 78% (P <.001), with more modest changes in intentions to use sunscreen. Attitudes regarding healthiness of a tan also decreased significantly. Conclusions: Brief, standardized sun protection education can be efficiently interwoven into school health education and result in improvements in knowledge and positive intentions for sun protection.

Abstract:Introduction: Sun protection early in life is necessary to prevent skin cancer. Therefore, youth sun safety education is imperative. However, such programs have often failed to bring about behavioral change in youths. Objectives: We evaluated a sun safety educational program’s effectiveness in improving elementary school students’ knowledge of sun safety, confidence in their ability to explain the importance of sun protection, and their understanding of sunscreen labels. Methods: A 1.5-hour program was conducted for the fourth-grade students. 45 of the 53 students participated in the study and completed the pre- and post-surveys, a response rate of 84%. These surveys were identical, consisting of four questions rated on a Likert scale to assess changes in the students’ knowledge, confidence, and understanding regarding sun protection. Results: The students overall had a statistically significant increase in their knowledge of sun safety and sun protective measures, confidence in their ability to explain the importance of sun protection, and their understanding of sunscreen labels. Conclusions: In alignment with the current literature, this study demonstrates the importance of school-based sun safety programs and notably shows that such programs can increase youth’s understanding of sunscreen labels and confidence in explaining the importance of sun protection. It is our hope that the program will cause increased practice of sun protective behaviors among the students. Further research is needed to determine how effective such programs are in increasing the practice of sun protective behaviors in youths.

Abstract:Introduction: Children’s skin is particularly susceptible to the carcinogenic effects of ultraviolet radiation. Young children are dependent on sun protection measures taken by parents and other caregivers. Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate parental sun protection behavior and sun protection measures at preschool at 2 points in time (2010/11 and 2018/19) in Bavaria and to test for a secular trend. Methods: Two cross-sectional surveys were carried out. For each survey, more than 4,000 parents of preschoolers completed a self-administered questionnaire about parental sun protection behavior and sun protection measures at preschool. To identify possible associations between parental sun protection behavior and sociodemographic characteristics, logistic regression analysis was carried out. Results: In the survey of 2018/19, 6 out of 8 sun protection measures are adequately applied by over two-thirds of the parents. Two out of 8 sun protection measures are adequately applied by less than one-third of the parents. Those 2 measures are aligning sun protection to actual UV index and preschoolers wearing sunglasses. The comparison of the study population of the survey of 2010/11 and of 2018/19 shows an improvement in parental sun protection behavior for 7 out of 8 sun protection measures. In both surveys more than 80% of parents state that preschool staff ensures preschoolers wearing sun hats and sunscreen outside on sunny days. Conclusion: Future campaigns should focus on the use of sunglasses and promote the UV index, as these sun protection measures are used very little.

Abstract:We report the use of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with a DNA library of chromosome 1-specific probes to confirm the karyotype, 46,XY,15+der15,t(1;15)(q32.1; q26.3), obtained by prenatal periumbilical blood sampling from a fetus who exhibited multiple abnormalities by ultrasound examination. GTG-banding of chromosomes obtained from the mother showed a normal karyotype, while the father was unavailable for study. The propositus was born at 37 weeks gestation and survived for several weeks. Cytogenetic analysis performed after the birth of the male infant with multiple anomalies verified partial trisomy 1q. This patient is compared with other partial trisomy 1q patients reported in the literature. The usefulness of FISH is demonstrated in situations where fetal abnormalities are present with de novo chromosomal rearrangements where paternal chromosomes are unavailable for study.
Parental perspective on sun protection for young children in Bavaria.

Abstract:Background: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the most important modifiable risk factor for skin cancer. Parents are responsible for sun protection of their young children and thus their knowledge and attitudes should be assessed. Methods: A survey that included 2619 children aged 3-6 years (response: 64.7%) was performed in Erlangen during 2001/2002. Parents' attitude, knowledge and behavior regarding sun protection were ascertained by using a self-administered questionnaire. Demographic and photosensitivity data of the children were recorded, along with the UV radiation-related outcomes. Results: Most parents correctly recognized the risk factors of skin cancer, except the intermittent and intensive sun exposure. Nevertheless, most parents also agreed with statements regarding sun-and tanning related beauty and well-being. The overwhelming majority of parents stressed the necessity of sun protection for their children; however, 50% of the children experienced some form of solar radiation injury during the preceding summer. Children eagerly pursued outdoor activities, especially boys compared with girls (P < 0.01). A gender difference was also apparent, with boys showing more willingness to wear hats than girls (P < 0.01). Conclusion: The relatively high level of knowledge was in contrast to a prevalent attitude of regarding sunlight as enhancing health and well-being. This may hamper UV radiation avoidance strategies. Thus, future campaigns should not only address preventive knowledge but also focus on associated attitudes to effectively modify the behavior.

Abstract:Background Sun exposure in schools can account for a large portion of childhood sun exposure before the age of 20 years, yet legislation in the United States is lacking to properly protect children. Schools serve as a foundational resource to introduce and implement sun‐safe practices in the youth population. Methods Federal and state legislation relating to the access of sunscreen, sun‐protective apparel, and shade was reviewed via the website LegiScan.com. Results At the time of publication, only 25 states have legislation in place that addresses and allows sunscreen to be used in school, given its classification as an over‐the‐counter medication. No state has implemented legislation allowing sunglasses to be worn in school, and only two states have laws explicitly allowing hats and other sun‐protective apparel at schools. In addition, the provision of shade is addressed in four states. Conclusions With a significant portion of sun exposure occurring at schools, state and federal legislation must address sun protection for students, opening the door for expanded access and additional research related to skin cancer prevention.

Abstract:The deleterious effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation on human health are increasing, particularly due to thinning of the ozone layer. 1,2 Although all humans are at risk of skin cancer, the risk is higher among those with light skin, with prolonged exposure to the sun, and with histories of sunburn in childhood. 3 Heavy UV rays are associated with skin cancers, particularly melanoma. 4 The most important factor in terms of protection against skin cancer, irrespective of skin type, is sun protection at early ages. Exposure to the sun is particularly common in childhood, and maternal and paternal behaviors constitute a model for children. Parental behaviors in terms of protection from or avoidance of the sun are important in protecting their children against harmful rays and promoting appropriate habits at an early age. 5,6

Sun protection in Singapore's schools

Abstract:Introduction: The World Health Organisation has identified schools as key players in the global effort to reduce the rising incidence of skin cancer. Singapore lies 70 miles from the Equator, with one of the world's highest ultraviolet (UV) index scores. It is a multi-ethnic society, with many expatriates. Children in Singapore are likely to be exposed to high levels of UV radiation, and represent a variety of skin types. This study aimed to assess sun protection measures in schools, the frequency of reported sunburn in schoolchildren of different ethnic groups, the level of parental and school concern about sun exposure, the sun-protective measures currently in place, and the parental and school support for public education and "sunsmart" school programmes. Methods: Questionnaires were sent to principals and parents of primary schoolchildren in 20 local and eight international schools in January 2003. Results: The majority of children in all ethnic groups in Singapore were reported to suffer to some degree from sunburn during their first ten years. Over 50 percent of parents and head teachers predicted an increased risk of skin cancer in their children. Some protective measures were in place. But teachers and parents were concerned, and most favoured the promotion of more active measures. Conclusion: The reported incidence of sunburn among Singaporean school children is higher than expected across all ethnic groups. Given the current level of sun protective measures in place, more could be done to educate parents and schools regarding "sunsmart practice", and reducing their future risk of skin cancer and eye damage.
Prevalence of sun protection behaviors in Hispanic youth residing in a high ultraviolet light environment

Abstract:Although rates of late-stage melanoma are rising in Hispanics, particularly those living in high ultraviolet light environments, little is known about the prevalence of sun protective behaviors in Hispanic children. We analyzed baseline data including frequency of sunburn, sun protective behaviors, level of U.S. acculturation, and skin phototype from a cross-sectional survey of 2003 Hispanic elementary school children in Los Angeles, California, who participated in a skin cancer prevention intervention. Although the Hispanic children reported frequently engaging in some sun protective behaviors, they also had a high rate of sunburn (59%) that exceeded previous national estimates for non-Hispanic white children (43%). Fewer U.S.-acculturated children reported more frequent shade-seeking at home (P = .02), along with less shade-seeking at school (P = .001) and more sunscreen use at school (P = .02). The surprisingly high rate of sunburn in Hispanic children suggests that the way in which they are practicing sun protection is not preventing sunburns. Sun safety interventions should be targeted toward Hispanic youth to provide them with practical methods of effective sun protection, in addition to education on the risks of high sun exposure.

Abstract:Background: As exposure to UV radiation is the primary modifiable environmental risk factor associated with skin cancer, it remains the principal focus of most prevention strategies. Numerous sun protection campaigns have been implemented worldwide; however, their impact on the actual incidence and mortality rates of skin cancer seems to be limited. To create successful skin cancer prevention campaigns, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of individuals' attitudes and behaviours regarding sun protection. The aim of the current study was to determine and report on the prevalence of self-reported attitudes, knowledge and behaviours regarding two of the major sun protection recommendations-avoidance of sun exposure and use of sunscreens-in an international representative sample across five continents. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 20 countries using a web-based online survey. Findings: A total of 50,552 individuals, comprising 25,388 men (50.22%) and 25,164 women (49.78%), participated in the survey. Among them, 83.2% reported having been voluntarily exposed to the sun (for sun-basking reasons) at least once in the last 12 months, and 47.96% acknowledged being exposed to the sun between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. The primary reason for non-adherence was that these hours were the most convenient times (32.28%). Only 24.05% reported applying sunscreen every 2 h when outdoors. Forgetfulness was the primary reason as provided by 27.79% of participants. Males and older age groups were less likely to adopt sun-protective behaviours around the world. Forgetfulness and the challenges posed by time constraints seem to be the biggest barriers to proper adherence. Interpretation: These findings should prompt the collaboration with health authorities and the manufacturers to enhance adherence by setting reasonable sunscreen prices and creating formulations that make their application less burdensome.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted of 232 students in grades 4– 6 at a public primary school in Beijing, including 129 boys (55.6%) and 103 girls (44.4%). Results: The majority of the subjects (75.0%) said they had never been sunburned, and 26.3% had never been tanned. UV radiation in sunlight and severe sunburn are important risk factors for melanoma and other skin cancers. 1–5 Under normal circumstances, children receive three times as much sunlight as adults every year; most sun exposure in life occurs in childhood. 6 Compared with adults, children are more likely to participate in outdoor activities, which increases the risk of sunburn caused by added UV radiation. 7 About half of adults' cumulative UV exposure occurs before the age of 20. 8,9 Sunburn and excessive sunlight exposure in childhood increase the risk of melanoma. 10–12 One or two sunburns in childhood can increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma. 13,14 Many studies have pointed out that children can be protected from UV rays through the use of sunscreen, sunshades, wide-brimmed sunhats, long-sleeved tops and sunglasses. 15,16 Because of the strong sunlight and high incidence of skin cancer in Australia and other Western countries, many awareness-raising programs related to sun harm have been launched and geared toward teenagers, such as "SunSmart" and "Play Safe in the Sun." Since 2005, China has held a skincare day on May 25 every year, aiming to educate people about scientific skincare and sunscreen. 17 These activities help educate young people on sun exposure and reduce the incidence of sunburn and skin cancer. Educating primary school students on the correct information about sunscreen and establishing the concept of using sunscreen from an early age is the first step to preventing UV damage to the skin. In order to understand the level of knowledge and behavior of Chinese primary school students regarding sunscreen, we conducted this survey. Beijing is the capital of China, located in a temperate zone with four seasons and high temperatures in the summer. The skin types of Beijing residents are typical Chinese skin types, and types 3 and 4 accounts for the majority. These skin types tan easier than Westerners, do not get sunburned easily, and have a low incidence of tumors. 18,19 The prevalence of cutaneous melanoma in China is 0.49/100,000, ranking 24th among all malignant tumors, and at a low level in the world. Sun-Protective Behaviors of Student Spectators at Inter-school Swimming Carnivals in a Tropical Region Experiencing High Ambient Solar Ultraviolet Radiation

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common cancer in humans and Australia (particularly in Queensland) has the highest incidence globally. Sunlight is a known skin carcinogen and reflects off water, exacerbating the risk of sunburn. In 1988, the "SunSmart Program" was developed to promote sun-protection to Australian children. Within a decade, it evolved to include a voluntary national accreditation program for schools, known as the SunSmart Schools (SSS) Program. Additionally, in 2008, it became compulsory for primary schoolchildren attending Queensland government-funded schools to wear a shirt during all water-based activities, except when competing. We observed the proportion of student spectators from 41 Townsville (latitude 19.3°S) primary schools (65.9% SSS) wearing hats at inter-school swimming carnivals in 2009-2011 and 2015 and the proportion wearing a shirt. Overall, a median of 30.7% student spectators from each school wore a hat [max 46.2% (2009); min 18% (2015)] and 77.3% wore a shirt [max 95.8% (2009); min 74.5% (2015)], suggesting that hats are under-utilized. Students from non-government (private) schools were twice as likely as students from government schools to wear a hat (41 vs. 18.2% p = 0.003). Neither the hat nor the shirt-wearing behaviors of student spectators were significantly influenced by their school's size (number of students), educational advantage, sun-protection policy score, or SunSmart status, indicating that other socioeconomic factors, not assessed here, may have influenced the results. Our findings suggest that the mandatory swim-shirt policy introduced in 2008 was very effective, especially initially. However, monitoring and feedback of results to schools may be needed to maintain high levels of compliance in the longer-term. Schoolchildren attending swimming carnivals should not rely on sunscreen or shade alone to protect against direct and reflected-sunlight, and need prompting to put a hat and shirt back on immediately after a race. This responsibility could be delegated to either a parent or a student prefect, if teachers are too busy to encourage and monitor sun-safety compliance among the students in their care.
Degradation of Acid orange 3 in aqueous solution by combination of Fly ash/H 2 O 2 and ultrasound irradiation

Abstract:An efficient and convenient method for degradation of Acid orange 3 (A03) dye from aqueous solution by combination of Fly ash/H 2 O 2 and ultrasound irradiation is reported. The effects of the relevant operating conditions (pH value, dye concentration, H 2 O 2 concentration, dosage of Fly ash and different reaction system) on the degradation of A03 were also observed. The combination method was found to be effective and could yield better results than either sonolysis or Fenton-like oxidation individually. Removal of 96% was obtained under the optimum conditions (dye concentration, 100 mg/L; H 2 O 2 , 5.4 mM; Fly ash, 2.5 g/L; pH 3, ultrasonic irradiation frequency of 25 kHz, room temperature). Sun protection changes among diverse elementary schoolchildren participating in a sun safety intervention: A latent transition analysis of a randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Children are a priority population for skin cancer prevention as excessive sun exposure in childhood increases the risk of melanoma in adulthood. The complexity of sun protective behaviors has posed measurement challenges for trials testing intervention efficacy. The current study evaluated a sun safety intervention for schoolchildren using latent transition analysis (LTA) to examine patterns of sun protection behaviors over time. A three-armed randomized controlled trial was conducted between 2012 and 2016 with two intervention groups (N = 3368) and an observation-only control group (N = 342) among 4th and 5th graders from 24 public schools in Los Angeles County. Both interventions conditions were grouped and compared to controls. Five self-reported sun protective behaviors were measured at baseline and three-month follow-up: use of sunscreen, long sleeves, long pants, hats, and shade seeking. Participants comprised 3710 schoolchildren, mean age 9 years, 47% female and 69% Latino. At baseline, four patterns of sun protection behaviors were found: children who engaged in 1) all sun protective behaviors; 2) few protective behaviors; 3) protective clothing and shade only; and 4) hats only. Children in the control group were likely to remain in their baseline status or transition to a less protective status at three-month follow-up. By contrast, 30% of children in the intervention group transitioned to a more protective status at follow-up. In this RCT of a sun safety intervention, children in the intervention transitioned to more protective behaviors compared to controls. Using LTA enriches understanding of intervention efficacy by modeling the complexity of sun protection behaviors over time. Abstract:Background Reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main effective measure for preventing skin cancer. Educational campaigns targeting sun protection have been focused either on behaviour on the beach during the summer holiday alone, or during everyday outdoor activities of the children. Little is known about the comparison between these different settings. Objectives To analyse whether parents apply similar protective measures to reduce UV exposure for their young children in different outdoor environments. Methods Families (n = 2619) with children aged 3-6 years (response: 64.7%) were enrolled in a population based survey in the German city of Erlangen and its surrounding rural county. Using a self-administered standardized questionnaire parents gave information about demographic and photosensitivity data of their children, their knowledge about risk factors for skin cancer and their typical instructions given to their children when these played outside on a summer day in different outdoor environments. Results Significant discrepancies regarding the four UV protective measures (clothes, shade, sunhat, sunscreen) for children between an everyday outdoor setting and a holiday setting on the beach were observed. A high level of parental risk factor knowledge was significantly associated with a better protection for children in all four measures only on the beach. Photosensitivity and demo graphic characteristics had some impact on protective behaviour, too. Measures of sun protection were reduced with children's increasing age. Conclusions Skin cancer prevention campaigns should target the encouragement of sun protection for children also in outdoor activities of daily living, not only during a summer holiday on the beach.
Sun exposure and challenges of sun protection in adolescents and young adults: A prevalence observational study

Abstract:The present study aimed to explore the adherence to and efficiency of skin protection measures among teenagers and young adults. The present study investigated the reasons for sun exposure and the obstacles impeding sun protection. In the summer of 2023, a self-reported questionnaire was posted on the social media account of two high schools, a university, some industrial companies and among the teenage children of a dermatology clinic. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the reasons for sun exposure behavior, sun protection measures and the frequency of sunburn among individuals aged 15 to 25 year. A total of 517 young individuals completed the questionnaire. It was found that 43.5% use a hat as a means of sun protection, and only 10% try to limit their exposure to the sun. Nevertheless, 78.7% indicate the use of sun cream, 61.7% expose themselves frequently or very frequently to the sun, and 51.2% exposed themselves to the sun for tanning. Young females were statistically more prone to tan [odds ratio (OR), 2.95; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.95-4.46] P=0.03 than males. Males exposed themselves to a 3-fold greater extent during recreational activities (OR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.56-5.69) P=0,025, compared to females. On the whole, the present study demonstrates that young individuals aged 15 to 25 years are exposing themselves too frequently to the sun. A large proportion of individuals still wishes to acquire a tan. Even if the large majority of individuals uses sunscreen, the majority of these do not protect themselves correctly since they report becoming sunburnt frequently.
